6 years later...
The three best friends sat under the shade of the large tree near the stairs to the knight academy.
After one of the students went by Link began to tell the two girls how one day he would be a knight.
"I'll have my own loftwing, and everything!" He said excitedly.
Sky smiled, "Someday I want to see what's under the clouds."
"Me too!" Zelda exclaimed.
As Link started talking to Zelda about how he would stay here and be a knight, Sky became distracted.
The other two didn't notice. They didn't notice how she looked at the clouds beneath as she walked to the edge. Or the way she closed her eyes and strained to hear something in the distance. How she frowned before slowly going to sit down once again.
"We should go inside." Sky said. "I'm getting hungry."
The two agreed happily, but Sky didn't feel happy, and she didn't know why.
Year 7...
"We're getting our Loftwings today!" Zelda said, "Can you believe it?!"
It was true, the children of Skyloft were finally getting their birds.
The ceremony would be held under the statue of the goddess. There they would one by one go and stand on the circle in the center, waiting for their guardian bird.
Once all the families were around the stone in the grass, the headmaster, Zelda's father began to call the children's names.
Birds of all colors came, purple, green, blue and yellow.
Then Link's name was called.
As he stood and waited, a bright red bird came flying down and landed in front of him... a crimson Loftwing. One of the rarest of all the Loftwings.
People stood and waited, confused and amazed. They watched as the bird slowly walked forward to Link, placing it's beak against his forehead...it was his...the rare crimson bird was his.
The jealously Zelda had was obvious, yet at the same time she was happy for him.
Sky was the first to begin clapping and cheering for her brother before the others joined with her.
After stepping to the side with his bird, it was the next child's turn.
The last of the day...Sky.
"Sky." Zelda's father called.
She hurried to the center, excitement and nervousness flowing through her.
And they waited. And waited. One minute, two minutes, three, four, five...
10 minutes.
Sky looked around...people were staring...at her. Then at the sky. The back to her.
After five more minutes the headmaster dismissed the adults and children. Though they were confused by the child not receiving her bird, the proud parents went to watch their children watched their children fly their Loftwings for the very first time.
But she stayed, saying nothing.
"Some birds take longer than others." Her dad told her.
Her mother nodded, "Do you want to watch Link fly?"
"No it's alright. You can go. You and Dad."
Knowing there was no point to argue with her and they knew she was perfectly safe, they went.
She sat, and waited.
The sun had begun to set, her parents had checked on her and then again left. Only because they knew she was upset.
Sky didn't know it, but one of her parents always stayed nearby to watch her, only going when they were absolutely sure she was safe.
The sun set, sinking just like Sky's heart.
As the stars slowly became visible she turned to head home.
Before leaving the arched doorway she looked back one last time.
And there was a bird. As black as the night the feathers were, and it's beak as white as the moon with a black design across it. The edges of the wings were white with a hint of gold. Like the black design on the beak the back of the Loftwing had the same pattern spreading to it's wing tips only in white instead of black.
The bird watched carefully as she began to move towards it.
The cool beak of the creature pressed against her forehead...This was her bird.
Beginning chapters will be shorter; hopefully later chapters will be longer:) The ending about Sky's Loftwing was a bit predictable, but I wanted it to happen that way.
