Chapter Four, Power Within
Sky's P.O.V
"Sky!" I heard my mother call.
I looked behind me, turning my head away from where I last saw the bird. "Yes?"
"Oh...I'm sorry, sweetie. Maybe a Loftwing will come here tomorrow."
I shook my head, "No, I don't think so. It's ok though. How's Link?"
My mother smiled, "He and his Loftwing are a perfect pair. He controls it so well."
Unlike me.
"Maybe you can ride together sometime."
"No, that's alright."
Mother stood silently for a moment before saying, "We should head home."
I nodded.
We made our way home quickly, our house was on the smaller side of Skyloft, the side the academy wasn't on. It was underneath an arch of stone, across from Goselle and her son, who works at the bazaar, Rupin.
"Sky!" Link said as soon as I stepped in the door to our room.
"Hi." I said quietly.
"Did your Loftwing come yet? What is it like?" He questioned excitedly.
I sighed, I couldn't lie to him, but if what my bird said was true, I had to be careful. "I don't have one."
"What? Everyone does."
"Not everyone I guess." I smiled, "How is that crimson Loftwing of yours? I heard they're really rare."
Link smiled brightly, "It's really cool, you can ride with me tomorrow and-"
"No thanks."
He frowned, "Why not?"
"I don't think I'm going to play outside tomorrow. I have a book I really want to read."
"But-"
"Link, Sky, it's time to eat!" My father called.
I left the room and sat down at the table.
"Sky, I brought back some soup from the Lumpy Pumpkin, your favorite. Here are yours and Link's." He said.
My father set down two empty bowls and then handed me the bottles. I set my own down, and got up to give Link his, but it was hot, so hot my reflex was to throw it down. The glass bottle shattered everywhere.
"Sky!"
"I-I'm sorry, it was really hot. I think I burnt my hands."
"It wasn't hot at all when I handed it to you. Let me see your hands."
He took my hands, they weren't red, not even hot. They were actually quite cool.
"Why did you throw it?"
"It was hot, I really didn't mean to."
"I understand you're upset because you didn't get your Loftwing like everyone else did, but it doesn't mean you can do that just because you're jealous of your brother." He said softly.
My hands were trembling at my sides, some form of power running through me.
"I'm not jealous! It was an accident!"
"Sky..." My mother said, "Just tell the truth. It's ok."
"I don't care if everyone got their Loftwing at the ceremony. I don't care about Link's bird, it was an accident!" I said loudly as I began to grow angry.
"Go to your room, Sky." My mother said. "When you calm down you can come back and eat with us, alright sweetie?"
I blinked back the tears, the powers within me growing stronger.
"I'm not hungry." I walked to my room and closed the door and locked it.
My trembling hands had a glowing shade of red and black around them. I closed them tightly, but it didn't work. I sat on the floor and shut my eyes, praying it would go away.
I slammed my fists down on the floor when I still felt the power running through me after five minutes, sending piles of books everywhere. My eyes went wide open as I looked around me.
"Sky, what are you doing?!" My mother yelled worriedly.
I took deep breaths, "I'm sorry, I tripped."
"Be careful."
I jumped up and hurriedly moved the books back where they belonged. I quietly unlocked the door before going and pretending to be asleep.
"Link, shh." I heard my mother whisper.
"Why did she say that?" He asked, sounding hurt.
"She's just upset that she doesn't have one. I'm sure she'll be better tomorrow. I bet she didn't mean any of it." She reassured him.
I heard her walk over to me and kiss my forehead, "Goodnight, sweetie." And then she left.
Once the door shut, I heard Link whisper, "I know you aren't sleeping."
I smiled, "Yes I am."
He laughed quietly, "Why did you do that earlier?"
"Something happened. It got really hot, I was sure it was burning my hands. I-I just threw it, I really didn't mean to. And I was just angry when I said I didn't care."
"Sky-"
"I know. You don't believe me. Link, you know I would never lie to you." You already did.
"Sky, I believe you. It's ok."
I smiled.
He reached his hand out across the gap between our beds, "Best friends forever?"
I did the same and linked my pinky finger with his, "Forever." I yawned.
"Goodnight, Sky."
"Night, Link."
