A Black Butler Story

A Reaper's Daughter

Day 3 of the Promise

Chapter 5

~Next Day~

Rebecca was getting special treatment due to yesterday's injury from Grell who was doing nothing more then treating her like a princess. Maybe it was a little much for a little injury, but Grell didn't care and just wanted to make sure his little girl was alright.

He made her a big breakfast that morning followed by a bubble bath and then the whole afternoon was all about coloring. Ah yes it was quite a morning and afternoon they had and oh how time flew by. With all the fun they were having 4 o' clock soon rolled around and a knock on the door interrupted the pair.

"Now who could that be?" Grell asked himself as he went to answer the door only to then be greeted by none other then William.

"William?! Wh-what are you doing here?!"

Grell was over comes by shock when he found his boss to be standing right before him and here at his house for some unknown reason.

"William, what are here doing here?" Grell asked again.

"You have already asked me that Grell now please step aside so that I may enter." William replied.

"Oh uh yes of course." Grell said allowing William to enter his home.

"So William, couldn't stay away from me could you? Come to have a little quality adult alone time with me now?" Grell said all flirty like to the man he desired.

William sighed and denied wanting any of that from Grell.

"I didn't come over for romance Grell, I came to check up on your progress and see where you are in your work." William explained.

"After all, being your boss and less you forget the deal we made I have a right to come over and see check in from time to time."

"Oh well you have nothing to worry about William. My work is getting done and I'm handling the responsibilities off caring for a child with ease." Grell explained to him.

"I see, then you won't mind if I go to your office to see how much work you've accomplished do you?"

"Not at all go ahead. I have nothing to hide so be my guest."

"I'm glad to hear that."

So William made his way to Grell's office with Grell behind him to only come to a stop when out popped Rebecca holding a piece of paper in her hand.

"I made you something and I think it's pretty." She said happily holding up her picture of a pink kitten.

"Aw honey it's adorable~" Grell said with a big smile.

Rebecca smiled back then looked up and saw William in front of her.

"Who are you sir?" She asked so innocently.

William looked down at her then kneeled to her eye level Before speaking

"My name is William T. Spears. I am Grell's boss here on important business matters." He replied.

"Oh...is he in trouble?"

"Not at the moment."

"So he might get in trouble?"

"Most likely."

"Now hang on I don't always get into trouble!"

William stood up and motioned Grell to follow as they continued to the office. As a child Rebecca was very curious as to what was going on and followed the pair.

Once in the office, William went straight to the desk piled with stacks of paperwork standing like small buildings. He examined both piles, the complete and the incomplete very carefully. This worried Grell because he didn't know what William would say to him.

Yes he had been doing the paperwork, but he slacked a bit today because he was taking care of Rebecca so for all he knew William could look down upon him. Telling him that it's not good enough and that he's just going to take Rebecca now.

That would be to much to bear if that happened, and he'd surely die from heartbreak. Just the thought of it was taring his heart apart and he struggled to stay on his feet.

"This is it...It's all over...I'm going to lose my baby. Nnnnnnnoooooooo!"

"Grell? Grell? Grell?"

William's voice brought Grell back down to earth.

"Sutcliff I've come to the conclusion after examining the work you've gotten done I just have to sa..."

"Stop! Look I'm trying my best I really am, but I only slacked off bot day because yesterdayday Rebecca got hurt and I wanted to make her feel better. Yes I know I'll be behind, but my baby comes first. If you're going to take her away then you have to go through me And pray her from my hands!" Grell explained holding Rebecca tightly in his arms.

"I won't let you send her to an orphanage! I won't let you!"

Tears were escaping from his eyes as he held Rebecca protectively close to him.

"Sutcliff if you waited for me to finish I was a going to tell you that I'm impressed with what you have done and how far you've gotten." William said making Grell stop crying for a few seconds to look at him.

"Wh-What? Y-You mean you're not taking my baby away?"

"No Grell, as long as you continue putting hard effort into your work then she stays." William replied.

Oh what a relief to hear those words and not the other way around. Grell was so over joyed that he almost fainted. He was doing well, Rebecca was safe, and oh if Will wasn't going to use his long metal spear on him then kisses would be involved.

"Keep in mind you have a couple of dahs left before your time is up. Don't disappoint me Grell." William told him as a reminder.

Grell nodded, and with that William took leave.

Rebecca, who had been quiet the whole time finally spoke up.

"What just happened?"

Oh how innocent she was, and unaware of the situation at hand. So Grell sat down with her and told her of the agreement he made with William to not only prove he could do his job, but also to prove that he could be a great father.

He told her how if he looses her because of his ignorance then he'd never forgive himself and die of heartbreak. Rebecca meant so much to Grell, but he had to show William that in order to keep her.

Even if she was a young child, Rebecca understood what Grell was trying to tell her. He cared about her so much that he was giving it his all to have her stay with him. Unlike his usual care free self, Grell was actually working his butt of for a change all for Rebecca.

Now is that a good parent or what?

He hugged her tightly and stroked her hair while humming a little tune he once heard.

"Don't you worry, daddy will work super hard to keep you. Nobody's going to take away my baby." Grell said with confidence.

All Rebecca could do was smile and hug Grell back as a small tear escaped from her eye. Guess Grell isn't such a bad guy after all and does deserve full trust; but to stay with him, he's got to keep working his butt off. Looks like someone's going to have to try and play a part in lending a helping hand?

Well maybe not necessary, but can't blame a girl for wanting to try right? Still, there's still time to keep Will's judgment at the good state. Just have to keep putting in the hard effort and make due until then. Once done, it's time for a well deserved family vacation for a while.

"I hope you can keep me." Rebecca said looking up at Grell.

"I hope so to baby, but I'm going to have to keep busy with my work until the week of the promise is up. Once I'm done we'll do whatever you want okay?" Grell replied.

"Okay, sounds good." She replied back.

"Good, now how about you draw some more while I get back to work?" Grell suggested.

"Sounds like a good plan daddy."

"Good to he-did you just call me daddy?"

"...Yes..."

"You called me daddy? You called me daddy? You called me daddy! Oh happy day!"

Rebecca soon found herself up in the air being spun around by a very happy Grell who seemed very pleased to hear her call him daddy. Sure it's not mommy, but at least now he knows she trusts him enough to call him something other than his first name, so that's good enough for him.

A happy way to end a chapter no?
