Author's note: Okay I know I didn't explain Nami much so I'm going to give a short background on her powers. Nami is the fourth generation Iron Dragon Slayer. Her primary element is iron *obviously* and her secondary element is fire. *like how Gajeel could use shadow and Natsu could use lightning* She can also use Requip magic which explains the daggers appearing. That's it and thanks for putting up with me!

As always Fairy Tail belongs to Hiro Mashima

Chapter 21

A Promise to Keep

~~ TS 2 weeks ~~ first week of January ~~

Lucy sighed as she sat down at the bar and winced as she felt her stomach flip. She made a face as she tried to keep what little food she had eaten down, and Mira came over and sat next to her, her new baby girl, Lily, in her arms.

"Is everything alright, Lucy?" Mira asked, seeing Lucy's face.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I think I have that stomach flu that's been going around, though."

Mira frowned. "When did you start feeling sick?"

"Just this morning, though Laxus started feeling sick last night. That's why I came in with Leo today. I couldn't stand being at home with him puking every hour." She made a face as she remembered last night, him getting out of their bed every hour, finally getting to the point where Lucy went to sleep in her old bed. When she had woken up that morning Laxus was still sick, and she had started to feel sick, so she had only a piece of toast before leaving the house.

"You know, Lucy, Wendy has made some medicine that works on nausea, it might help Laxus. I know Cana and Juvia are begging her for it, it works wonders for morning sickness too."

Lucy made a face as her stomach flipped again. "Thanks Mira. I'll go get some for me and get some for Laxus, too." Lucy got up and made her way to the infirmary, looking for Wendy, only to walk in on her and Romeo in the middle of a heavy make-out session. Lucy cleared her throat loudly, and the two split apart quickly, Wendy turning red and Romeo dashing out of the room.

"Ahh... Lucy! How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to know that you two need to get a private room." Lucy grinned and waggled her eyebrows suggestively, only to clutch her stomach as it flipped once again. "Uggh... Do you have any of that nausea medicine? I think I have that stomach flu that's going around, and if you have any that I can bring over to Laxus it would be nice."

Lucy took a breath and sat in one of the chairs and watched as Wendy got the medicine ready. Soon she came over and handed Lucy a small glass of bright purple liquid, and she quickly downed the glass, making a face at the taste of sour grapes.

"Is that it?" She asked as Wendy prepared a jar of it to go.

"Yes. All your nausea should be gone for a week, but if it comes back you need to go see a healer to make sure nothing is wrong." Just as she was handing the bottle to Lucy, Nami came rushing in clutching her arm.

"Nami! What happened?" Wendy demanded to know as she rushed over to the girl.

"Training with Erza on my requip magic and one of her swords got through." Nami snorted. "She's lucky I didn't take a bite out of it."

"With that temper of your's its no surprise that you're Gajeel's daughter." Lucy laughed from her chair, earning a scowl from Nami. As she removed her hand from her arm Lucy winced at the sight, a large gash on her upper arm trailing blood down her whole arm. Wendy clicked her tongue at the girl and went to gather supplies, coming back with an arm load of bandages and some bottles. Within minutes Nami's arm was cleaned and bandaged.

"You need to be more careful when training, next time it could be serious." Wendy lectured. "You also need to let up on the training, Nami. Rest is important too, and for the last two weeks you've done nothing but train, your body is starting to wear out, your reflexes starting to dull."

"But Wendy! I need to get stronger!" Nami shouted while standing, only to sit back down as Wendy glared at her.

"You have months to get stronger, and now your body needs rest!" Nami started to protest, but was once again silenced by another glare from Wendy.

"I'm not going to listen to your excuses. You're just like your father, but even he knows when to rest. Just to make sure that you rest I'm banning you from any kind of training until your arm is healed. If I find out that you've been training before your arm is healed, that arm won't be your only injury." Wendy warned her in a menacing voice.

"But what am I supposed to do until its healed?"

"You could always run errands for the Guild, get to know the people here." Lucy suggested and saw Nami and Wendy think about it for a moment.

"That would be a good idea, Nami, and I know what your first errand can be." Wendy walked over and took the bottle back from Lucy and held it out for Nami. "You can go and take this to Laxus, and make sure that he takes all of it."

"What is it?" Nami asked as she took the bottle and looked at the purple liquid inside it.

"Nausea medicine. You know where he lives right?"

"In the woods outside of town by a lake, right?"

"Yeah." Lucy answered. "Oh, I give you, Nami, permission to enter the house."

"Why do I need permission to enter?"

"Because if I don't give it to you, you would be fried by Freed's runes. I'm a bit of a security risk around here." Lucy laughed as she stood up. "Seeing as I don't have to go back to the house, and that I'm feeling better, I'm going to see if any of the girls are up for going out. I'll see you two later. Oh, Nami. Laxus can be an ass when he's sick so be careful." With that Lucy smiled and waved goodbye as she walked out of the room.

"She really is kind to everyone, isn't she?" Nami said, watching her leave. Wendy sighed and glanced at Nami.

"It's really amazing how kind she is given all she's been through. Lucy probably had one of the hardest childhoods here, so much grief and sadness at such a young age, yet she brings the most happiness to Fairy Tail. So if you think you're the only one worried about her future, you're wrong." Wendy glanced at the girl. "What are you still doing here? Go take that to Laxus!"

"Okay, okay. I'm going." Nami grumbled at her and left.

Nami knocked on the front door loudly, hoping Laxus would answer, but with no such luck. Cautiously, remembering Lucy's words about the runes, she tried the knob, finding it unlocked, and made her way inside.

"Hello? You home, Spike Head?" Nami called out and listened for a reply. Faintly, from the floor above, she could hear the sound of someone retching, and made her way up the stairs, and towards the room where the sound was coming from. She walked in and saw an unmade bed and the door at the other end of the room open slightly.

"Is that you, Spike Head?"

"What the fuck are you doing here, Shorty?" Laxus groaned from the bathroom. Nami heard movement and a moment later Laxus slowly walked out of the bathroom, shirtless, and sat on his bed, turning to glare at Nami.

She crossed her arms and glared back. "I came to bring you some nausea medicine from Wendy, and you obviously need it. You look like shit." She dug into her jacket pocket and brought out the bottle and handed it to him, which he took and downed at once.

"Damn this stuff always taste terrible, but it works better than anything else, so thanks."

"Well, my job here is done. Later." Nami turned to leave.

"Oi, Shorty! Come back here." He called after her.

"What!?" She glared at him.

"I could actually use your help with something."

"And what would that be?"

"Well, if you wait outside while I get dressed, I'll show you."

"Fine!" Nami huffed an walked out of the room, and a minute later Laxus came out of the room dressed in a pair of dark jeans and a red t-shirt. She followed him downstairs, and he grabbed his coat and walked out the door.

A bell clinked as Laxus lead the way into one of the little shops along the canal, and Nami was nearly blinded by the sight of so many glittering jewels and metals. Damn dragon sight, walking into one little jewelry storeand it nearly blinds me.

"Wait, a jewelry shop? Why do you need help picking out jewelry, Spike Head?" Nami asked Laxus, who crossed his arms and glared at her.

"Because I've been dating Lucy for nearly three months now, and I'm no good at picking out gifts. You're one of the only people in the Guild I know that can keep a secret, you're keeping one of your own. Judging by the way you look at Lucy I can tell it's about her." Laxus said as he walked over to a display case.

Nami bit her lip. How the hell can he tell all of that just by looking at me? Sighing, she walked up next to him and looked at what was in the display case he was at.

"Rings?" She looked up and saw him blush.

"I'm not thinking about proposing or any of that crap! I'm just trying to find something that she would like!" Laxus growled and moved to another case.

"Sure... Gihi... I'll go look over here." She walked over to a case full of necklaces, the jewels glittering in the light, distracting her a bit. Faintly, she could hear Laxus talk to the shopkeeper about rings and earrings. She was looking at the necklaces, trying to think of what Lucy would like, when one caught her eye.

It looked like an old fashioned key, about two inches long, and made entirely of a clear crystal with a very faint blue hue to it. Oh wow! Lucy would love that! "Hey Spike Head! Come over here! I think I found something!" She yelled over to him, earning a glare from the shopkeeper as Laxus made his way over.

"What is it, Shorty?" Nami pointed out the necklace to him.

"I think she would love that." He leaned over to get a closer look, and nodded at the shopkeeper, who took it out of the case and put it into a small velvet box.

"Would you like me to bag these along with the others, Sir?"

"Ah, no bag, and how much for everything?" The shopkeeper told him the price, and Laxus pulled the money out of his wallet and paid the man, who handed him three velvet boxes in return. As they left the shop he slipped two of them into his coat pocket and tossed the other one to Nami, who caught it with a surprised look on her face.

"What's this for?"

"A small gift for helping me, but I also want you to make a promise to me." Laxus stopped walking and turned around and got down on eye level with Nami. From the look in his eyes she could tell he was serious.

"What kind of promise?" Nami asked cautiously.

"I want you to promise me that if anything happens to me, not that I'm saying that anything will happen to me, but if anything does, I want you to protect Lucy."

"Why would you think anything happens to you or her?"

"The way you look at us. You look at us differently than you look at anyone else in Fairy Tail. Every time you look at me its like you've seen a ghost, but with Lucy its like you're looking for a flaw, for something that isn't there. Not to mention you're always nervous, always looking over your shoulder." Laxus watched as a guilty look crossed her face, and Nami let out a long, slow sigh before giving him a small smirk.

"Damn, us dragon slayers really do know too much, don't we? Yes, something does happen, but I can't say what. My job here is to protect Lucy, but I won't be needed for a few months, but when the time comes I promise, I will protect her."

Laxus nodded and stood up. "Good, and you can open that already, just don't eat it." Nami glared at him and opened the box to find a simple black metal ring. As she looked closer at it she saw the word live etched into the metal.

Nami slipped it onto her right hand and was about to tell Laxus thanks when she was hit and knocked over by a wall of water rushing down the little street.
