Previously: Klaus turned to look at the body properly, the blood, the stillness, the smell overwhelming him. He could smell the death, the scent of decay filling his nose, the metallic taste of blood in the air. His head tingled and he shook it a few times as his vision blurred and then all of a sudden he fell to the ground, clutching his head and screaming in agony.

"Klaus, Klaus, what's going on?" Caroline was yelling.

His face felt like it was on fire, twisting in all directions and the pain was radiating down towards his back. "Caroline!" he cried out as he turned towards her, his eyes glowing yellow before he collapsed.

Chapter eight – Forever changed

Caroline looked on in horror as Klaus fell to the floor, the amber in his eyes a confirmation of what was happening to him. She had seen it with Tyler and now here was Klaus, triggering the werewolf curse that would change his life forever.

Klaus started to stir again, his body shuddering in a heap on the floor. "Klaus, you don't have long, I'm so sorry, I didn't know you had the gene. You're changing into a werewolf."

He looked up at her, his eyes in pain and disbelief. "A werewolf? Arghhh! I don't understand!"

"You will want to hunt me and one bite will be all it takes to kill a vampire. But I can't leave you to face this alone." Her words came out in a jumble, trying to impress on him how urgent the situation was.

"Stay away from me then Caroline" he gasped out before screaming again. "I don't want to hurt you!" His body was now beginning to lengthen and the sounds of bones breaking echoed through the room. She shuddered and backed away, wanting to run but also to race forward and hold him at the same time.

Her brain was ticking over, trying to work out how to stay and help him through the transformation and not become wolf bait. And then she heard a growl, coming out of his throat and she knew her time to think was almost done.

"Klaus, I'm so sorry. I have to go, I will lock you in so you're not a danger to others. I wish I could help you" she finished with a tremble in her voice.

She squeezed his hand which even now was transforming then backed towards the door, meeting his eyes before shutting the it between them. Grabbing a chair from the kitchen, she wedged it under the doorknob in an attempt to keep Klaus contained then ran to the bathroom and locked herself in.

Listening to the screams and howls coming from her bedroom, Caroline sobbed into her arms, knowing the horror Klaus was going through. Then the growls and sounds of destruction grew louder as Klaus banged against the door, trying to tear his way through it, destroying the room as he did so. Caroline just waited to see if the door would hold or if she would have to take flight in order to save herself.

What seemed like hours later Caroline raised her head wearily from her arms to the sound of silence. She had no idea if it had been only a few minutes or much longer, every noise Klaus had made was torture to listen to and seemed to go on and on. But he hadn't made it out of the room and now she needed to get to him, to know he was okay.

Removing the chair, she opened the door an inch at a time, wary of the fact it might not be over but when the door was open a few feet, she could see Klaus huddled on the floor, seemingly unconscious.

Rushing in, she sped to where he lay, his sweat soaked body twisted into a pile on the rug. Gingerly reaching her fingers to run along his arm, she felt him stir.

"Klaus, it's okay, it's Caroline, I'm here" she whispered quietly near his ear.

His eyes flickered open and she stopped dead at the sight of them. The normallyfearlesselectric blue was replaced by dark eyes that seemed lost and drew her in. His face was covered in scratches and there was blood gathered near the corner of his lips.

"Oh Klaus, what can I do?" she asked, trying to gently touch him but each stroke causing him to flinch.

"I could smell you Caroline" he gaspedout through torn lips. "Your blood and body were what I was chasing after, and not in a good way" he finished with a half smirk which straight away became laced with agony. "I wanted to destory you. I don't ever want to feel that way again. To think of destroying you..." and he stopped, shuddering.

"But you didn't Klaus, I'm safe and it's over, for now."

"What do you mean for now?" he asked, panic in his voice.

"I'm so sorry, but this will happen every full moon. I don't know how to stop it, I just know that it will get quicker each time. And hopefully easier" she finished with a grimace.

"I can't do it again Caroline. The pain love, it was excrutiating." His eyes met hers and she melted into them, the agony radiating out of them struck to her core.

She clutched him closer to herself, trying to squeeze away the fear. "I only know that I won't let you go through it alone Klaus. I will be here, helping you however I can."

Klaus nodded, beginning to try to sit up, each movement slow and disorientating. Caroline reached down, helping him stand and guiding him to the bed.

Sitting on the edge, Klaus ran his hands along his arm, feeling the pain in his body slowly dissipate. The scratches were beginning to mend too and he looked over at Caroline questioningly as she sat gently down next to him. "You're a supernatural entity Klaus, now you will heal when you are damaged."

Reaching over, she traced a scratch on his face as it mended under her touch and wiped a speck of blood off with her thumb, tempted to lick it off but knowing it was too soon. Klaus reached out and took her hand, cupping it in his own. "Thank you sweetheart, I couldn't have done that without you."

"What do you mean? I was no help at all, I ran out on you, leaving you to go through that pain alone!" Caroline was shaking and crying, the thought of the pain he endured fresh in her memory.

"I knew you were there and that helped. But I also knew I needed to attack you and I fought it Caroline. Somewhere in the back of my blood crazed mind was an image of you, so beautiful, so perfect and so I fought against myself. I could've broken through that door but I took it out on your room instead."

Caroline looked around properly for the first time. All her attention had been on Klaus but now she noticed that not much was left standing in her bedroom. "I think a few possessions instead of my life is fine to sacrafice Klaus."

"Nothing about this is fine" he mumbled, falling back against the pillow.

"I know and I know you must have so many questions" she answered.

"Soon love but not now, I have to sleep, so tired..." he replied as he drifted off, now too exhausted to finish a sentence.

Caroline sat watching him for a while, her brain ticking over before she curled up next to him. Pulling a blanket up over them both, she tucked them into their own little temporary cocoon. "What does this mean for us?" she wondered as she listened to his breathing, finally drifting off to sleep in the small hours of the morning.
