In a daze she quickly changed Sophia and pulled her to her breast. She listened to them talking to her about Daryl. She just wanted to go right then, now. Sophia, was not happy having missed out on her first thing in the morning feed, she was starving. She tried to calm herself down. She knew Daryl wasn't in a good way. Andrea had rung Merle sobbing into the phone that things were not looking good.
'Can we go?' she asked Merle, he nodded. He just pointed to Sophia telling her to sort her out first. Feed her up. Sophia was feeding then pulling off crying then moving back on. She was angry with everyone. Punching her fist against Carol's chest. The milk was pouring out. Carol Stopped her moving her to her other side to try fix the ache there knowing she might fall asleep before she fix that one.
'Soon as we can, we need to get Soph some shit, and a car seat,' he told her.
Carol nodded, tears falling quietly. She needed to give a statement to the police also. She gave a brief one to Rick while feeding Sophia. She opened the door expecting Daryl two men pushed past them Ed trailed apologizing saying he didn't know how they knew where she lived. In her statement she told Rick Ed tried to protect her, and Sophia. In the end he could only protect Sophia. All she knew was he told her he didn't know how they knew where she lived, he thought the van accident was a set up.
Carol was confused, tired and confused as hell. Why did he do that? Carol shook her head. She couldn't work it out.
Some one was holding Ed taking his statement. It seemed to fit with Carol that he took Sophia and locked himself in the bedroom then passed her to Carol when Daryl asked to see her. Technically he kept her away from the guys he was with, one he knew would do things to her that made his skin crawl. He told them he'd been thinking about climbing out the window when Daryl knocked at the door.
Ed finally told them, he knew he'd been terrible to Carol, low life scum, but he regretted ever trying to hurt Sophia. He didn't want Sophia to get hurt. He didn't know why he did it. He'd been drinking heavily the whole time, for years. In the sober reality which come about in prison, he couldn't believe he did that to his kid. Signing her over was a way of trying to fix it.
Carol couldn't deal with it, her man was in hospital, she just wanted to get to him. She didn't want to make Ed fell better, she wanted her Daryl.
Shane changed come in checking on Carol, peering at Sophia. Merle had gone out to their house to pack some stuff to go to the hospital. Carol had a couple of changes there, Sophia had a drawer of clothes. He packed for 4, he didn't pack anything for Daryl knowing if he did make it it would be some time for him to actually come home.
A police officer who Carol hadn't seen before put his head in talking to Shane. Shane nodded and spoke briefly to him nodding.
'Ed's asking about Sophia, we told her she was fine,' Shane told her, she was confused as anything, Sophia was asleep at her breast, Merle showed up with a change of clothes for her and Sophia. She quickly took a shower and changed. Merle had Sophia in the car seat ready to go when she was done. They walked out of the station. Carol didn't look left or right keeping her eyes on Merle's back, she didn't want to think she just wanted to get to Daryl.
They drove in silence both lost in their own thoughts, Carol sniffing and crying off and on the whole way there. They parked in the underground park. Carol was thankful Merle had put in Sophia's pram, he handed her a water bottle while he set it up. She put a still sleeping Sophia who wasn't sleeping that soundly she was sniffing off and on the whole time. She was still upset in her sleep. Carol knew how she felt she couldn't stop sniffing.
They come to the waiting room where Andrea was pacing, she clung onto Merle. He brought her some clothes, she was wearing some hospital scrubs because her clothes were had it. She hugged Carol, she took a look at Sophia.
'Any news?' Merle finally asked.
Andrea shook her head, 'He's lost a lot of blood, the injury isn't that bad, it nicked a vein, it come pouring out.' she told them, 'If they stop the bleeding, and can pump enough blood into him at the same time, I don't know, ... its pretty bad,... '
'How did it even happen, he was out with Sophia, I saw him,' Carol asked.
'I'm not sure, ... I think Shane said he was protecting Sophia,' Andrea stated.
Carol started crying again, she couldn't help it. She wanted to know how he was. She sat down on the couch waiting for any news. Merle went off to find food then they sat chewing listlessly waiting for news. Carol knew she had to eat.
Two hours later a tired looking surgeon come into the waiting area looking for a family member of Officer Daryl Dixon. Merle come forward, followed by Carol and Andrea.
'He's my brother, this is my wife, and Daryl's fiancee and his baby,' he gestured towards the pram, 'Just hit us with the news.'
'Well he's in recovery, he's lost his whole bodies blood supply which we have put into the range of 1 1/2 times his amount we have replaced, but his heart rate is better than it was. He's no longer bleeding, he should retain full use of his arm, we did lose him on the operating table twice, we need to play the wait and see game to see if there is any long term damage,' the surgeon pulled no punches delivering the news. 'Would any one like to come see him?'
Carol nodded, Andrea pushed her forwards, 'We will watch Soph, bring her when she wakes to see her Daddy,' Andrea told her, Carol followed him to go see Daryl with her heart in her throat.
