I know, once again it took me quite awhile to update. I had a long, and frustrating, streak of writer's block. But now I've finished the next chapter! Yay! Enjoy.

Spock was reading Theoretical Spatial Phenomena. It was after dinner and was part of an hour-and-a-half period twice a week that they all (mostly himself and Leonard) had designated for homework or reading. The point of it was because Jim had fallen back into the habit of not doing his homework and had been warned he continued this, he would be suspended, or at least 'grounded' again. Locking the door and forcing him to be quiet seemed to be helping me complete his work so far.

"I still don't get why you guys didn't wanna do anything for halloween this year." complained Jim. "You agreed to last year."

"Why do you even care?" asked Bones. "It over! Done! It's November second and you are supposed to be writing a report for command logistics.

"I am!"

"No, you are not." said Spock, looking up from his book. "You have not typed anything in the past hour."

"Sure I have. You just didn't notice." said Kirk. McCoy sighed and snatched the PADD.

"So what are you doing? Chatting with someone? Maybe that cute girl you talked to at lunch today?" Bones looked at the PADD. "The Kobayashi Maru test? What's that?" Bones sat down and started reading what was on the PADD

"James you're not planning to take that test, are you?" asked Spock.

"I signed up today, I'm taking it in two days. I'm trying to find as much information as I can in the meantime. And let me tell you, there ain't much."

"This says no one's ever passed it." Bones pointed out.

"Well, duh. There's a reason for that."

"And what would that be?"

"I haven't taken it yet."

"It is not logical to be so sure of your sucess," said Spock "The Kobayashi Maru test is...difficult."

"Spock, it's impossible, that's the point." said Kirk. "It's to see how cadets handle no-win situations."

"So why are you so sure you'll pass?" said Bones.

"I don't believe in no-win scenarios."

"No-win scenarios exists, whether you put faith in their existence or not." said Spock. Jim put down his PADD and stood up.

"Spock, it's a human thing. Can we leave it at that? Good. My forced homework time is done, so I'm going to go find Scotty."

"Why? You're not going to ride his freaking motorcycle again are you?" asked Bones.

"No! What kind of idiot do you think I am?"

"All kinds." McCoy said flatly.

"Scotty is a year ahead of all of us, he took the Kobayashi Maru test earlier this year. I'm going to see if he has any pointers. I'll be back later." and he left the room.

"That kid is nuts." said Bones.

"I do not understand how you can call James a 'kid'. You are only four months his senior." said Spock

"I can call him a kid because he acts like it sometimes. I have a test to study for, and you have some dry and obscenely long book to read so why don't be both stop talking and go back to what we were doing?" And they did just that.

"Hello, Spock." Spock turned to see Uhura walking up beside him in the hallway.

"Hello, Uhura. Was there something you wanted to discuss?"

"I have something to give you." she reached into a bag she was carrying and pulled out a PADD and handed it to him. "You're assignment for next semester."

"Why are you giving it to me?" he asked taking the PADD.

"Scotty and some of the other older students say they do this every year. Just choose a few sophomores to pass them out, and I happened to get picked.."

Spock read the PADD.

"Well?" she asked. "Wait, sorry I shouldn't pry."

"Spock!" Jim came rushing toward him, followed by Bones. "Did you get your assignment?"

"I just received it."

"I have both of yours too." said Uhura, she handed McCoy and Kirk their PADDS. "I need to keep moving. Bye, good luck on your test tomorrow, Jim."

"Thanks!"

"I'm going where I wanted!" said Bones. "New York City!"

Jim looked at his PADD. "Great, Bones. I'm glad for you."

"You're not going where you wanted, are you?" asked Bones. Jim shook his head

"Where were you hopeful you would be placed? You have been oddly silent on this affair." said Spock

"I didn't wanna get my hopes up. But, I wanted The Amazement."

"They were taking cadets?" said Bones, incredulous. "But starships never take cadets. Especially not a big one like that."

"They said that they would go over any applications for training there for non-medical students, which is probably why you didn't know. I guess I didn't make it. Instead I'm going somewhere in Ireland. See you two later." Jim walked away.

"He is disappointed." said Spock.

"Spock, if you can tell he's upset, do you really think I missed it?"

"What is the proper protocol for this situation?"

"Leave him alone." Bones shrugged. "I got what I wanted, and you don't have a clue about comforting people. We'd make things worse."

"That does make some logical sense." said Spock. "I am going to the library."

"And I have to get to English." And they both walk off in opposite directions.

"Spock! Bones!" Scotty slid onto the seat next to Spock at lunch the next day. "Did you hear?"

"Hear what?" asked Bones.

"They're saying he did it."

"Who did what?" asked Spock.

"Jim! People are saying he passed the Kobayashi Maru test."

"What!?" said Bones, a bit too loudly. "But he said it's not beatable."

"It isn't! I took it twice, failed both times."

"Cadets Spock and McCoy report to Admiral Jondin's office." sounded over the comm. Spock and Bones got up and headed for the door.

When they got there, Kirk was already sitting in across from the admiral with and empty chair on either side of him.

"Both of you, sit down." said the admiral, they did.

"Were you both aware that your roommate took the Kobayashi Maru test this morning?"

"Yes sir." they both answered.

"Kirk, why don't you give them the news?" James sat up a little straighter.

"I passed."

"So it wasn't just rumors. Congrats." said Bones.

"He won by hacking into the computer and changing the parameters of the simulation." said The Admiral.

"Oh." said McCoy.

"I wanted make sure neither of you knew about this ahead of time."

"Sir." said Spock. "When I heard James would be taking the Kobayashi Maru test, I studied what I could find as well. Including the regulation involving the test. What Kirk did was not technically against the rules."

"I know. But it wasn't technically allowed either. Which is why I wanted to know if either of you had any foreknowledge of his plan."

"No sir."

"No sir." The Admiral stood, as did the three cadets.

"You are all dismissed. And Kirk?"

"Yes sir?"

"There is a good chance you could be awarded for this rather than punished. You may go."

"YES!" yelled Jim a days later. After classes had finished the day before, they had found out The Kirk was not going to be punished, in fact he was receiving a commendation for creative thinking. Leonard had jokingly said that maybe it would cancel out all the trouble had had caused in the last two years.

"What now?" asked Bones.

"They changed my assignment!" he said. "I'm going on The Amazement!"

"Is this as a result of your results on the Kobayashi Maru test?" asked Spock.

"Yes it is! Come one you two, We are celebrating! Let's get everyone together! Uhura, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, Christine," he said, nudging Spock.

"Janice Rand." he said. She and Kirk were currently, as Leonard put it 'off again'.

"Careful, your human's showing." said Bones. "And you know what, Jim? I agree with you. Let's go have some fun."

"Let's go Spock!" said Jim, dragging his Vulcan friend up. Spock submitted himself to the fact that he would have to spend the rest of his evening with his roommates and classmates in what was sure to be a loud and crowded environment. he looked at Bones, who was busy messaging people, and James, who was smiling amazingly widely.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad.
