"I'm just saying that you're welcome to come home with me if you want." said Jim, all three boys had finished school for the day and were walking across campus back the dorms. "You don't have to spend winter break here.
"Same here, Spock." said Bones. "I don't like the idea of anyone having to stay here all year round. It may be a nice place but, you need a break sometime."
"Your offers are appreciated, but I intend to remain here." said Spock. The three cadets walked past Scotty, who was hard at work fixing one of his vehicles.
"Hey, what's that?" asked Jim.
"It's called a 'Four Wheeler'. Of course right now it only has one." said Scotty, looking up briefly. "It was an all-terrain vehicle."
"Oh great, this isn't going to be a repeat of the motorcycle incident, is it?" asked Bones.
"Don't worry, Jim isn't allowed anywhere near this thing when it's done."
"Aw, come on!" said Kirk. "I learned my lesson."
"What kind of tools are theses?" asked Spock, picking up on from Scotty's tool case.
"Period tools. This what would've been used, well almost, I modified the power tools to run on modern sources. Always use the right tools for the right job." Scotty reached his hand under the four wheeler.
"Dang it, can't reach." he stood up. "Spock, you're a Vulcan, that means you're pretty strong, right?"
"In comparison to humans, yes I am."
"Great! Help me flip this onto it's side."
"Are you sure that is wise?"
"Yeah, it's fine." It ended up taking Kirk's help as well to get the vehicle onto it's side. Scotty thanked them and all three boys started walking away.
"Why is Scotty so fascinated by old vehicles?" asked Bones. "They're outdated for a reason!"
"I think they're cool too." said Jim. "Nowadays, it's either hop on a transporter pad, or program a flight path in a shuttle. No skill, no risk. Just boring. In previous centuries, everyone drove, what about Vulcan, Spock?"
They heard a crash.
"AAH!"
"Scotty." said Kirk, all three of them rushed back to him.
The four wheeler had fallen over, and Scotty was lying on the ground, his right forearm caught underneath it. Bones kneeled down by Scotty.
"Go get help you two!" you told Spock and Kirk. "Move it!" Both boys ran toward the main building. Bones turned his attention to Scotty.
"Can you tell me what happened?"
"It-it fell." Scotty had his teeth gritted. "The wheel fell off and I tried to grab it, and my sleeve got caught on something and the whole kit and caboodle came crashing down on me."
"Okay, Can you feel your arm?"
"Yes! It hurts, a lot."
"I know, and I'm sorry but you have to fight the pain until the medics come, it'll be fine though, it'll be okay."
"I can't-" Scotty winced. "-feel my hand." Bonce could see blood soaking into the visible part of his friend's uniform.
"It hurts." said Scotty.
"I'm sorry, I wish I could help you, I can't." said Bones. "Here, breath in slowly, no through your nose, one, two three four five. Out through your mouth, one two three four five.
"What if they can't fix my hand?" asked Scotty, "maybe I can't feel it because it's too badly damaged."
"You can't feel your hand because your wrist is pressing into the ground and stopping the blood flow." said McCoy. "That's fixable."
"O-okay."
"Just keep breathing. One, two, three, four. And out. One two three four."
"Bones!" Kirk ran up to him. It was the next day in the evening. "Are you going to go see Scotty?"
"Yeah. You too?"
"Yup. And Spock's meeting me there. I think he feels guilty because he didn't stop Scotty from flipping that thing up on it's side."
"Spock doesn't feel. And if he did, I doubt guilty would be the first thing he felt."
"Vulcans do have emotions you know. They just choose to suppress them." They reached the infirmary, and Spock was standing outside. All three went in.
"Hello." said Nurse Tranyar. "Can I help you?"
"We're looking for Montgomery Scott, is he still here?" asked Jim, smiling at Nurse Tranyar. She gestured to the back.
"The doctor is just going over a few things with him and then was going to discharge him. You have to wait here though, but I'll tell him you're waiting for him.
"Thanks you very much. You're very kind" said Jim. Nurse Tranyar left.
"You know she's an Imedian, right?" asked Bones.
"A what?" asked Jim.
"And Imedian. Their outward physical appearance is nearly identical to humans, however they have only one gender."
"Which kinda makes inter-species relationships far-fetched." said Bones.
"Oh." said Kirk.
"So, how's that foot taste, Jim?"
"Shut up."
Scotty walked out with his hands clasped behind his back.
"Hi, Scotty." said Kirk. "How are you doing?"
"They fixed up arm, good as new." said Scotty. "But it was pretty bad, the bones were broken in multiple places."
"How 'bout your hand?" asked McCoy
"It's fine, like you said it would be. Still at the end of my arm." said Scotty. He sighed. "There was one issue though." he took out his right hand form behind his back. It was missing it's middle finger.
"They amputated your finger?" said Bones. "But is didn't look anywhere near that bad."
"You didn't see my hand that close up. It was practically sliced off already, and the bones were crushed. The doctor said that I was lucky, if Someone hadn't gotten me right away, or I had gotten stuck just another inch over, it could've been my whole hand." He put his hand on McCoy's shoulder. "Thanks, for yesterday."
"I'm a soon-to-be-doctor, it's my job." the bell rang.
"Dinnertime." said Kirk, let's go." all four boys headed in the direction of the dining hall
"Poor Chekov!" said Kirk that night in their room.
"It is not possible for Chekov to be poor as Earth does no a have a money-based economy." stated Spock.
"He just meant that the poor kid looked like he was gonna puke." said Leonard. "I would've too, if I hadn't known how Scotty had really lost his finger."
"You know what's freaky about all this?" said Kirk. "If we had just been walking a bit faster, or the tire had stayed on a little longer, Scotty could've lost a whole hand."
"If we had not been there, the whole situation would not have occurred." Spock said.
"Wow, you really do feel guilty." said Leonard. "Listen, Scotty seems to be taking it very well, he doesn't blame you so, don't blame you either."
"Your statement does contain a reasonable logic."
"Why, Bones, I think Spock just complemented you." said Jim.
"It a miracle." said Leonard sarcastically. "Hey Spock?"
"Yes?"
"Change your mind about winter break?"
"No."
"Okay. Goodnight."
"Goodnight." said Spock
"Goodnight, Spock, Bones." said Kirk. "Lights, off."
This chapter is dedicated to two people; DragonsRme who inspired this chapter with her story 'The Drabble Book'. And ZenaraTheDragon who wanted more Scotty. (Sorry that it ended up being about him getting hurt)
