Communique from Nyota Uhura to Christine Chapel

I'm so sorry I haven't called, I'm sure your just as busy though.

Mandarin has to on of the most beautiful languages I've heard. And the music here, it's lovely. I might start taking violin lessons, because i heard this litle boy-he couldn't have been more then five- playing this tiny little violin and goodness, it was so pretty. And if a five year old can learn to play like that why can't I?

I didn't want to tell you about Spock because I didn't know when or if you'd see each other at all. And in all honesty, we both know you shouldn't be getting your hopes up. I'm sorry-but it's true. Maybe you cna find someone else, I'm sure there has to be some guy in the city, or an ensign at the base, who'd be perfect for you. Just look.

There's a commander here, Jiox Huy, who's been offereing to teach me Denobulan, isn't that cool? It's a complex language, but I'm up to the challenge.

Goodnight.

Love,
Uhura

Bones ran up the stairs toward his apartment. he had spent another day not being allowed to work on the level he wanted to by Dr. Braith. And now the turbolift was broken, so he had to climb ten flights of stairs.

He turned around a corner and ran into someone.

"Sorry." he said. She turned around.

"Oh, it's fine! No harm done, right?" she smiled. the lady was probably four or five years older than he was he guessed. She had very short blonde hair and hazel eyes. She had what looked like leopard spots running down either side of her face, starting at her temples and continuing down until they disappeared beneath her neckline.

"You wouldn't happen to know where apartment one-zero-two-seven is?" she asked. "I think I may be a little lost."

"that floor ten, I'm on that floor too. I can show you." offered Bones. She smiled again.

"Thank you." They headed up the next stairwell. He looked at her again. She was the same height as him, but very thin. And her skin was very fair.

She is so pretty.

"I'm Leonard McCoy by the way." he said. "I assume your from off-world?"

"Yep! My name is Emony Dax. I'm from Trill."

"I've never heard of Trill."

"We're still working on entering the Federation. Which is part of Why I'm here. I'll be judging a gymnastics competition in early May, but Starfleet invited me to come and see some of Earth. So now Im here in early February, with three months of free time." She explained.

"I'm not a native either." said Bones. "I am from Earth, but not New York. I'm a Starfleet medical student here for training. And let me tell you, is it ever cold!" she laughed, he liked her laugh. They kept talking. He told her about Starfleet Academy and Spock and Jim. She talked about Trill. They only talked for maybe ten minutes. But Leonard loved every second of it.

They reached Emony's apartment.

"Thanks for showing me the way." she said to McCoy, smiling. "See you around?"

"I hope so." came out of his mouth. He felt like slapping himself Try to be cheesier, McCoy, oh wait, you can't. He told himself.

"I'd like that." she said.

"Um, well, bye." said McCoy and he walked off toward his apartment.

He kept thinking about Emony. She was really very pretty, and sweet, and she seemed fairly smart.

Cut it out! No girl, you are here to work! He reminded himself. He looked back toward her apartment. Well, just because I'm here to work doesn't mean I have to be like Spock... He smiled.

"What are you doing on the bridge, Cadet?" asked Lieutenant Commander Jade.

"I'm at the helm for the next shift, sir." he said. "From now until Oh-eight hundred hours." Jade stared at him. but finally, she turned around and sat back down. "We'll be going past an asteroid belt." she said. "watch for any wild ones."

"Yes, sir." he said, and took his spot at helm, grinning to himself. Two nights with the computer, that's all it had taken to get three shift on the bridge in the next month. Jim had been careful to choose times that the captain most likely wouldn't be on the bridge. He settled in and concentrated on avoiding asteroids

This is so worth it.

Spock walked down the hallway. a young Lieutenant and an ensign stopped him.

"Cadet, how are feeling today." he asked.

"I am healthy, and have had no difficulties in my duties." he replied.

"So you've enjoyed today?" pushed the lieutenant.

"I do not enjoy or dislike anything." said Spock.

"Right, because you don't feel emotion." said the ensign. He walked behind Spock, seeming to be beginning to walk away. Instead he shoved Spock forward. Spock did not fall, but he did trip.

"So no resentment toward my friend?" asked the Lieutenant.

"None." said Spock. "Good day, Gentlemen, he quickly walked away, but the ensign grabbed his shoulder.

"Cadet, are you worried? Isn't that emotion?" Spock chose not to answer.

"Ensign! Lieutenant!" Commander Winnar came up behind the group. "Both of you, confined to your quarters until the end of the day. Spock. walk with me." the ensign and Lieutenant mumbled 'yes sirs' and walked off.

"If you are being bullied you need to tell me." said Winnar.

"I am not bothered or hindered by it." said Spock.

"I need to know anyway. Because Starfleet doesn't need any racist trash in it's ranks. Vulcan is part of the Federation, and you deserve the same respect they'd show any humans."

"Yes, sir." said Spock.

"Did this sort of thing happen at the Academy?" asked Winnar.

"No, sir. At the Academy I spent a large portion of my time with my roommate, James Kirk. He was what you might call popular."

"So I've heard." said Winnar. "I need to go. Remember, I need to know about these incidents from now on."

"Yes, sir." Spock said again, and they parted ways.

"Hi." Christine fell into step beside him. They had taken to spending their spare time together.

"Good afternoon."

"Um, Spock? Tomorrow night I'll be going to my parents for dinner, and since I've mentioned you the last few times I've seen them, they want to meet you. So, would you come eat with us the day after tomorrow? My mom knows your vegetarian, and it's just a casual meal, nothing fancy or anything. But if you don't want to co-"

"I will." said Spock, cutting off her rambling. "At what time shall I come?"

"Eighteen Hundred hours?"

"I will be there."

"Great! I have to work another shift, talk later?"

"Most likely."

"Bye!" she left, going toward sickbay. Spock headed to his quarters. He was going to meet Christine's parents in two days. He wondered what she had told them about him. He supposed he would find out.
