Sorry to anyone who missed the last chapter-i removed the chapter that was a hiatus message so chapter 55 may not have shown up as a new chapter. anyways, Enjoy!

Bones looked around his new room. at least he'd gotten a single room this time. no annoying roommates.

He laid down on his bed, looking up at the ceiling, enjoying being able to take a moment to relax.

it was too quiet. to the point where he got up and went to search out other people. He wouldn't talk to anyone if he could help it...but he needed to at least hear other voices...Jim wasn't even here and he'd ruined being alone. great...

This was a nice school, about the same size as The Academy, but it felt so much older. Well, it was older, by a couple hundred years and it showed in a way. it felt like it had more history, more roots. and 100% human.

He walked around the quad for a while, nodding to other students. He didn't talk to anyone though. And he didn't plan to. he was here for his education. not to get a social life. Then again that was the plan when he went to The Academy too.

"Excuse me, do you know where-"

"-No i don't-i just got here. Go ask at the off-" Bones said, turning to the person who had chosen to spoke to him.

"th-the office. ask there." he said, suddenly regretting his rudeness. "I do know where that is though if you need someone to show you."

The girl standing in front of him smiled-well smirked-and nodded. "i think i can find it, but you're free to come along. Just in case." she added, flashing a white-toothed smile at him before turning away, tucking a piece of curly strawberry hair that had fallen loose back into her updo.

Bones hesitated a moment before going after her, running up alongside her to walk along with her. She smiled again.

"I'm Jocelyn Treadway."

"Bones m-Leonard. Leonard McCoy."

"Leonard. cute." she said. "so why are you here Bones? you don't look quite young enough to be a freshman."

Looks like he was going to be stuck with Bones here too.

"I transferred from Starfleet."

"Oooh, military."

"it's not just military i never would've joined if it-"

"-i know. i know. trust me. I'm not some alien hating, anti-Starfleet piece of trash." she waved him off with a hand. her accent-much like the accents of the people he grew up around-almost made him smile. but her words did not.

"Now i never said you or anyone else was."

"Heh." she rolled her eyes. "you are Starfleet, aren't you? acting like nobody hates you." they got to the front building. "i'll be off, but maybe i'll see you later, Bones." she smiled charmingly and went inside, leaving Bones waving slightly like an idiot.

"Jocelyn. Jocelyn Treadway..." he repeated so he'd remember her name before deciding to go back to his dorm.

He needed to unpack.

"these rooms are ugly, Spock." Jim said. He had enlisted the Vulcan to assist him in getting his new, one person, room set up. And the young human man had already decided he hated it.

"I do not find it aesthetically pleasing or unpleasing." he said, looking about.

"Exactly. it's dull. it's awful..." he put his hands on his hips, looking about slightly agitated.

"you know what? i don't want to spend the next year and a half living in this room." he said. "let's rent an apartment in town."

Spock raised an eyebrow. "are you sure that would be wise?"

"yes I am." he said "otherwise you'll find me sleeping in your closet most nights because i'm not sleeping in here."

"James?"

"What?"

"You share a room with your brother at home."

"Yeah, used to at least. Mom always wanted a guest room so we shared for most of-"

"-and there are no other people you personally know well in this building."

"..i guess not." Even Spock was in a different building across the way.

"I see." Spock said, clasping his hand behind his back. "fascinating."

"If you want to imply something just tell me." Kirk said, facing Spock.

"You don't have a distaste for the room so much as the location."

"well the view does suck too-"

"-that is not the reason. You feel ostracized here. Alone. And you are not fond of that feeling."

Jim shrugged. "of course i'm not fond of it. Who is?" he looked around the room. "but it really is ugly..."

"I believe it would be better for you to cease trying to justify yourself." Kirk glared at the Vulcan for a moment before sighing.

"Okay, i don't want to be in a huge old building in a stupid room by myself if i can avoid it. and i can. Let's rent an apartment-we can ask Scotty or Arex or someone to share with us."

"so you want three of us in an apartment?" Spock said. "Three together in a set of rooms to-"

"Okay i get your point." James interrupted. "Excuse me then for actually enjoying our previous room arrangement."

"i do not think replacing Leonard will give the effect you desire." Spock told him.

"...yeah...it won't." he sighed. Jim looked about the room. "you're really not interested in finding an apartment?"

"I believe we would both find it more effort than it's worth."

"yeah, you're right." Kirk said. "you often are."

"i will take that as an attempt at a compliment." James nodded.

"...let's call Bones."

"alright."

Later that evening after a short, but full conversation with Leonard, dinner, and getting class schedules gone over Spock was in his own room in the building across from Kirk's. suddenly he head something hit the window. He looked up to see what it was...

...and halfway hanging out their third-floor window directly across from him was James.

Spock immediately got up and opened the window.

"you should hang out of the window frame like that."

"SPOCK THAT'S YOUR ROOM THIS IS GREAT!"

"You don't need to yell i can heard you fine without yelling."

"Hey you can! oh man, this is Amazing!" James grinned. "i can even throw things to you.

"indeed you can...what did you throw in the first place?"

"a shoe." Jim looked down. "...you know i kind of needed that...i better go get it." and he was gone.

Spock quietly went and sat back down at his desk.

It would appear that in a way Kirk had gotten his way anyway. he was close to Spock.
