Innocence
Part 8
Jane sighed as Mary Pat politely closed the door to the private conference room. She wiped at her nose to clear away the oozing blood.
Maura cleared her throat and spoke up for the first time, "Hairline fracture of the nasal bone above the lateral nasal cartilage."
Jane had to grin. The statement was pure Maura.
"Why Doctor Isles, are you saying my nose is broken?" Jane dryly teased.
Maura looked confused.
Jane silently chuckled.
"Could you bump this out for me?"
The teacher stared at Jane.
"Jane, you understand I do not have any way to relieve the pain nor the discomfort of realigning your nasal bone."
Jane stood taller and brushed away Maura's caution with a flick of her hand.
"Please, I've played hockey and had worse injuries."
Reluctantly Maura reached up to find the best angle to close the fracture. She pressed her finger quickly but firmly against Jane's nose, only letting up when she felt the bones shift into place.
"Ow, damn woman! That hurts!" Jane turned away to put her fingers on her nose only to have them knocked away by Maura.
"Stop. Don't touch unless you want me to have to do that again."
"Okay…alright already. Bossy thing!" Jane exclaimed.
Maura took the reddish brown tissue from Jane's hand and finished clearing away most of the blood from her nose.
Afterwards they both sat at the table. Both hating what was about to happen.
"Maura, officially I am here to interview you about the charges filed against you by one of your students by the name of Nikki Vicker. It is your choice to have counsel here."
Maura looked as if she wanted to waive that right, but Jane shook her head.
"Umm…yes, I would like my lawyer to sit in."
Jane got up and went to the door and knocked; a moment later Mary Pat opened it and stuck her head in.
"Would you please notify Ms. Isles' lawyer that he is needed?"
"Will do, detective."
Jane, in the mean time, handed over the statement so Maura could read it while they waited.
Her lawyer must have been close by, because it was shortly thereafter when a well dressed man came through the door with another woman in tow.
"Detective, I strongly object to you speaking with my client without me being here!" He spoke in outrage.
"Tom, Tom…hang on. Jane…I mean Detective Rizzoli did not question me. We have just been waiting on you." Maura stated plaintively.
Tom looked between the two women.
"That's a first. Whatever you want to ask, Detective; the answer will always be my client is innocent. I want a court hearing to disprove these erroneous charges brought on by a child."
Jane looked at Maura. Then she simply stood and walked around the room.
She turned to Maura, "Did you do it, Maura? Did you try to compel Nikki Vickers to have sex with you? Under age, a little girl, your student, Nikki Vickers!?" Jane's tone demanded an answer.
"Detective, I object!"
Maura looked to Jane, tears were in her eyes.
"No Jane, I swear. I didn't." Maura wiped at the tears.
Jane's gut said Maura was telling the truth. She looked at Lawyer Tom, "Prepare your client for court."
"What? Detective, this is a witch hunt against my client. First no bail, now she is being railroaded into court before I have time to prepare my case? Surely you see the injustice?" Tom was standing in his righteous anger.
Jane said nothing, but her face told Maura everything. Jane was on her side. Maura nodded in understanding. Detective Rizzoli knocked on the door and left when it opened. She had a job to do and she couldn't do it staring at her love. The truth was there, she just had to find it.
Mezzler sat in his office on the second floor of BPD. His awards and medals were all on display for everyone to see. All of that did not matter to his mind's eye. What he prized most was lying on his desk; a bound folio of papers that read in capital letters, 'The People of Boston vs. Dr. Maura Isles'.
He felt the anger take him over. The elusive Constance Isles may have escaped his grasp years ago, but he was damn sure going to make her offspring pay, adopted or not!
His plan was working. As long as he could keep Rizzoli in line, everything would be alright.
Mean while across town, Haley Watson read text after text about what was going on with Ms. Isles. She became more distressed as the words became increasingly abusive. Haley looked back at one text she received and took a chance and decided to speak with her mother, whom was a lawyer herself.
Leaving her bedroom she went in search of her mom, Elise Watson. After she found her in the study she politely knocked on the door frame.
"Hi, sweety, what can I do for you?" Elise smiled at her daughter.
"Mom, I need to tell you something and show you a text. It's about Ms. Isles."
"Oh no, baby, not you to; does that woman have no shame?" Elise's face crumpled with empathy.
"Mom, please, just read it."
Elise pulled her daughter into a one armed hug as she took the cell phone to read the indicated text. The attorney in her was clearly shocked at the damning information the text contained.
