14 years old
It was a very sad day for the bat family as they watched the coffin descend into the ground. Three weeks ago Conner had woken up to find that Alfred was not up making breakfast like he usually would have been with Dick so he went to find him to see if he was OK. He had thought Alfred was still asleep but he wasn't waking up so Conner tried to listen for anything wrong . . . it had been then he realised there was no heart beat and he had screamed so loudly the manner shook. The family ran in to find Conner kneeling by the bed with his head on Alfred's chest sobbing his heart out. They all knew what had happened without needing to ask Clark and they all cried to. The ninety-five year old had died peacefully in his sleep dreaming of his family.
Alfred had left everything he owned to the bat family as they were the only family he had left, but they had not been the only ones to attend the funeral. In-fact every superhero in America was there to wish Alfred off along with Leslie the family doctor, Ma and Pa Kent and even Commissioner Gordon was there. Bruce had made a speech during the funeral and there had not been a dry eye in the house. Then once the coffin had hit the bottom of the grave the family made their way one by one to drop a single rose onto the coffin saying their goodbyes before watching as the dirt was slowly dropped onto the coffin sealing the deal.
Alfred had been buried next to Bruce's parents where he should be and his grave stone read. . .
Here lays Alfred Thaddeus Crane 1929-2024
A father, a grandfather, a mentor
May he rest in peace as he so deserves.
Conner had never attended a funeral until then, he wasn't the only one of course but many of his family had attended more than one in their lifetimes. Dick had attended his parent's funerals when he was young. Tim had attended his father's funeral after he was adopted by Bruce, Dick had been with them of course as had Jason. Damian had attended his grandfathers and mother's joint funeral with his family before Conner had come along. Stephanie had attended her mother's when she was three so didn't really remember it much. Cass had attended both her parents funerals when she was thirteen, Conner had not gone to that as he had been rather young. It had only been him and Terry who had never gone to a funeral until now and neither were holding up very well.
When they arrived back at the manner they had a moments silence for Alfred before they all broke away to be alone to grieve in their own way. Conner himself went to Mount. Justice to be around his friends, to try and forget to try and be normal. To not be alone.
