Chapter 15
The group were packing their supplies as quickly as they could. Glenn and Daryl had found some vehicles nearby and the group were getting ready to mobilize. Following the encounter in the woods, Rick had led Carl and Beth back home and announced to the others that the area was no longer safe. He claimed an insane man had attacked Carl and Beth, this proving the group was now at immediate risk. Well, it's half the truth thought Carl, sadly.
He'd been thinking about what Mark had said, even though he tried not to. He truly believed Ashley hadn't know what was planned but the slight niggling feeling in the back of his head kept coming back…
He was sat outside of camp alone. The group were nearly ready to move out now, and Carl realised this was probably his last moments to himself.
He sighed.
Looking up he noticed Beth emerging from the camp and watched as she walked over and sat next to him.
''You okay?'' she smiled.
''I'm fine. Are you okay?''
''I'm fine, too,'' she replied.
''I'm sorry about what happened. I would have stopped him if I could have,'' blurted Carl suddenly. ''Mark hated me from the start. When I…''
''Carl, you don't need to apologise,'' interrupted Beth. ''It's not your fault. And I don't need to know what the situation was between you and Mark. All you need to answer is this: did Ashley love you?''
Carl hesitated. ''She said she did. I believed her.''
Beth continued to look at him.
''I believe her.''
''Good. Then trust me, she wouldn't have done anything to betray you. Love is a strange thing, Carl. But love is loyal.''
Carl smiled. He felt better. He would never forget Ashley but life moved on. Who knew where they were going next? He didn't. But he had Beth beside him. And his parents. And a new baby on the way. Life was looking hopeful.
Smiling, Carl stood and gave the camp one last look.
''Don't you want to say goodbye?'' asked Beth, standing so she was next to him.
''Nah,'' replied Carl. ''I hate endings.''
