Chapter 6

Kairy's POV

I grabbed my favorite hoodie as I went to leave the house. Amy was picking me up to go to the football game that evening.

"Heading out, honey?" My mom asked.

"Where are you going?" Candace added.

"I'm going to the game, and yes I am heading out now." I answered.

"OMG I want to go! Can you drive me?" Candace whined.

"No my friend is giving me a ride." I replied.

"Candace, you failed your last math quiz. You aren't going anywhere." My mom scolded. Candace whimpered and laid her head on the kitchen counter next to her agenda.

"Have fun. Don't be home too late, now." My mom added before I went out the front door.

Amy was just pulling up to my house as I stepped out. Her white sedan screeched to a stop as I ran to get in.

"Kairy! Hi! Aren't you PUMPED?" Amy started freaking out.

"Hi and I am sort of excited, I guess. I like football." I said. Apparently that was the wrong response, because Amy gave me the most annoyed look.

"Kairy, come on! This is going to be SO fun. I promise you." She said as I sat in the passenger seat. She sped away from my house and towards the school.

"I do like football though." I reiterated. And that was true. I wasn't sure if Amy understood that.

"I get that," she began, "there's just always a lot of interesting stuff that goes on!" She ended with a little squeal. I tried not to visibly cringe.

"Okay, okay. Well I'll try to get a little more hyped." I said.

We eventually made it to the school and the parking lot was already more than half full. I saw the bus in the corner from the rival school and began to get a little more interested.

We walked out back and Amy began her squealing as we approached the crowd around the field. I tugged at my shorts and tried to distract myself. Amy was talking to people I did not know. I felt like she knew every person on the face of the planet.

"Kairy! I am so glad you are here. Come sit with us!" I heard someone call. I turned to see Marine up on the bleachers we were next to. I smiled and stepped up.

"Thanks! Who else is here?" I asked her. She just motioned for me to follow her and we ended up at a spot on the top row of bleachers half way down with Silver and Blaze. I greeted them and took a seat.

Blaze offered me some of the pizza she and Silver had picked up, "The food here is surprisingly decent, but also pretty expensive. Feel free to have some."

"It's okay, I'll get something later. I ate some food before I left." I replied, looking around. The field was big, green and both teams were already on it warming up. I noticed Knuckles from our team, but I could not recognize anybody else from where we were seated. Bleachers lined both long sides of the football field and both sets were pretty full. Everyone seemed pretty pumped for the first home game of the season.

Amy eventually came over to sit on the other side of me as the game started. She was followed closely behind by Cosmo.

"Ugh look at that tramp." Amy said under her breath at one point, and I followed her gaze to the cheerleaders for our team. I could see that Rouge was one of them.

"You talking about Rouge?" I inquired. Amy shook her head, "No, Sally."

That name was unfamiliar to me.

"Care to elaborate…?" I asked.

Amy looked down, "Well, she's the brown squirrel over there on the cheer squad. We've always disliked each other, but at least I don't interfere with any guys she likes. She clearly has something for Sonic and it irks me to no end. She knows I like him!" She finished, exasperated. I mentally processed what she had said and decided I needed to be the 'consoling, understanding, girly friend'.

"There, there. Don't worry about it – you are more fun than anyone else I know!" I forced the biggest smile I could muster.

Amy's eyes crinkled, "Kairy, you are too funny." She started giggling.

"You really don't get who I am talking about and you suck at comforting. It's awesome!" Amy started laughing. Cosmo joined her. I smiled with relief. These girls got me.

Suddenly the crowd simmered down, and I turned my gaze back to the field to see the teams making their way out for kick-off. The other team had the ball first, and I began to get excited as the game officially began.

After a few minutes of focusing on the game, which at that point was 7-0 us about halfway through the first quarter (in simpler terms, we were doing well really early), I decided to get a snack. Making my way down to the snack shack, I passed Sonic and some of his friends standing near the edge of the field close to our team's bench.

"Hey Kairy! How are you liking the game?" He smiled.

"Hey! I am enjoying this quite a bit – I've always been a big football fan. How about yourself?" I asked purposefully. He answered exactly the way I had hoped he wouldn't.

"Oh, the game's great, but check out the sidelines. Smoke show or what?!" He eyed the cheerleaders on both sides.

"Okay, now I need to find a decent sized trash can to puke in, thanks." I dismissed myself.

"Hey, hey, hey I'm just playin' around. Where are you sitting?" Sonic called back to me. I turned around and pointed over to Blaze, Silver and Amy. I carefully watched as Sonic's eyes diverted back to Tails when he saw Amy sitting up on the bleachers.

"Oh, okay. I think we might stay down here to be closer to the field. Better view. Hope you enjoy the game!" He sweat dropped. Not that I was some sort of mind reader, but I was close to certain that he knew that I knew what he had been thinking. I gave him a look but then turned around again and went to the snack shack.

I grabbed some candy and made my way back into the bleachers. But, of course, such a journey could not be made without some sort of interruption. I was thrown off balance as some guy was shoved into me.

"Um, sorry-" I began until I realized it was Silver. I quickly assessed the situation and took in that Sonic had apparently shoved Silver, who had subsequently bumped into me. Naturally I felt the absolute need to know why an event such as pushing poor Silv had taken place.

"Fuck. Off." Sonic hissed through his teeth, and Silver's ears flattened in a scared manner and he briskly left towards the cars. My eyebrows were way past the top of my forehead at that point. Sonic paid no mind to my presence and turned back to the game. Tails caught my eye contact and signaled for me to just leave the area. I trusted his judgment, so I did.

I turned and made my way back up to an oblivious Blaze, Amy and Marine.

Knuckles POV

I knelt down in position as I waited for the quarterback to make his call to the other team. Being on the varsity football team for the third year in a row was great, and being a starting defensive lineman on the opening home game was even better.

"Hut hut!" The away team's QB called and I rushed forward to push the running back in front of me out of the way of the ball's throw. The first pass was incomplete.

I breathed in and smiled, looking over to the sidelines where I saw Sonic standing. He was with Tails and a few others, cheering us on. I then looked over to the bleachers. I saw Kairy with a few other friends, all also watching the game intently. My eyes then slowly drifted towards the one place they should not have: the cheer squad.

I saw her right in the middle. I knew that she was one of the "flyers", or one of the girls that got thrown in the air for flips and stuff. She was really good at it.

But she was also such a dumb whore. And I still had not found out who took her virginity.

But I also did not care. Why would I care who she slept around with? Her problem, not mine.

But I really did care. I cared way too freaking much for my own good.

I could lie to myself all day long, but I really wished that she was the way she used to be. Back then I would have been "cool" enough for her. Maybe. At the very least, it would not have been weird to still play fight and argue 24/7. But now it was, and it was heartbreaking.

Well, for me at least. She didn't give a shit.

Suddenly I realized that everyone was screaming and I was just knelt in my go position and hadn't moved at the snap. The whole play went awry and our rivals made a touchdown. I could hear the cheerleaders hesitantly screeching our team name over and over, and I cringed as I heard coach call me off the field. I was in trouble. All because of stupid Rouge.

Kairy's POV

The next evening I rang on the doorbell to a small ranch-style house and was greeted by a large green crocodile. He introduced himself as Vector, and I figured out soon after that he was Espio and Charmy's adopted parent. He was a nice guy, pretty tall, and very in to music. Turned out that he also worked for the local police department as some sort of detective guy. All very interesting to me.

He directed me towards an open door just off the foyer and I followed the stairs through it into the basement. Espio was down there with Charmy, Nicole and Shard. He smiled and invited me to come sit on the floor with them. The basement was small but finished, and the carpet on the floor was soft. The room we were in was like a living room of sorts, with a couch, a small table and a television. It was very homey.

"Hey Kairy! Glad you could come! Once everyone gets here we can order pizza." Espio cheerily greeted.

"Awesome! Thanks again for inviting me – this is a lot less stressful than last night." I joked.

But it was not entirely a joke. The game was okay, but I didn't understand why Amy liked all the drama. Around halftime, Knuckles had been caught standing completely unfocused in the middle of the field and caused for a touchdown for the rival team. He was subsequently benched for the remainder of the game, and even though the home team won, he left immediately and refused to talk to any of us. Silver never came back after his tussle with Sonic, and Blaze was very concerned. The cheerleaders were also extra bitchy at the end of the game. I could hear them yelling at each other and the football players in friendly ways and also angry ways. As we were leaving, Blaze was quiet and she and Marine left as soon as they could and Amy was in shambles the whole ride back to my house because Sonic had not interacted with her in the slightest. It was depressing to listen to her. Once back in the safe haven of the walls of my house, I almost immediately found my way to my bed and crashed. Far too much activity for one night and far too much activity to try and comprehend the next morning.

Espio laughed at my humor. Charmy started buzzing around as more voices came from upstairs.

"Cream is here! We are gonna go for a walk outside I think!" He said excitedly. I knew he and the rabbit were pretty close.

"Okay. The rest of us will be here. Have fun!" Espio said. It was nice seeing the brotherly interaction between the two. And although they were only a year apart, Espio seemed so much older and wiser by comparison. Charmy was a hyper little guy.

I sat down and stretched out my legs as the bee flew away, "So what's new with you guys?"

"Not much here – I did not attend the game, therefore I am oblivious to any sort of drama." Espio shrugged.

"Same here. I am not really a sporty person." Nicole said. Shard nodded in agreement.

It was my first time really interacting with Nicole in a smaller setting, and my first time meeting Shard. The more I talked to Nicole, the more I liked her. She was a very pretty girl, being a brown lynx with black points and long black hair that she usually kept in a loose side braid. She now wore a purple blouse with black leggings and white sneakers, and her green eyes shone as she talked. Shard was definitely mostly mecha than hedgehog. He was black with yellow tips here and there, and his robotic eyes shone green as well. His left hand was a stub, which could have been the cause of some sort of amputation, and the fingers on his right hand seemed sharp, although his face came off softer than the rest of him. He seemed like a pretty good guy, though.

"So Shard I don't think we've ever actually met, but I am Kairy." I introduced myself, and he shook my left hand with his right.

"Likewise. Glad to finally get the opportunity! So how was the game last night?" He questioned.

I half laughed and half sighed. Where did I begin?

"Well I hung out with Amy, Blaze, Marine and Silver for the most part, and we won the game. But Sonic and Silver got into some sort of fight and Knuckles screwed up big time before half time, and those were the main events." I gave the reader's digest version to keep it as simple as possible.

"Oh I'm not surprised by the Sonic thing. Sometimes his ego gets in the way of his good-friend side and he can be a real tool bag." Shard shook his head.

"Actually Blaze just texted me to inform me that she can't make it. I would only assume that means Silver and Marine are following suit." Espio informed.

Just then footsteps were heard and Tikal descended down the stairs towards us.

"Hey there! Glad you made it!" Nicole greeted her best friend. Tikal gave everyone a hug and sat down. Her wrapped and beaded locks jingled as she moved.

"Alright now I'll order pizza. What's everyone like?" Espio asked. The vote came down to one cheese and one veggie. I didn't realize that both Tikal and Espio were vegetarians.

The rest of the night continued on smoothly. I really enjoyed this crowd. Every one of them had so many redeeming qualities and we had fun doing more than just talking about the latest drama. We ended up watching an old cartoon movie towards the end of the evening, and all of us were laughing and having such a great time. I was so relaxed and happy with these awesome people.

"Alright guys I think I am going to have to head out. I am getting a bit tired, and need to charge up. But I'll see you all bright and early Monday morning, of course." Shard said to us as the movie ended.

Nicole stretched, "I think I'll have to follow suit. Thanks for an awesome time, Espio!"

I also began getting up, "Same here. Thanks again, I had a great time!" I thanked Espio a ton. I was so grateful for such a relaxing night.

The three of us worked our way up the stairs, and Tikal stayed behind with Espio. I knew the two of them were pretty close.

I followed Shard and Nicole out and got into my car. I waved to them standing by Nicole's car as I drove off. As my car rolled forward, I looked back and I saw Shard place a little peck on Nicole's cheek as she got into her car. So sweet! I wondered if they had something going on.

Once I was home I texted Blaze. She didn't respond, so I decided to drop it. I figured she was with Silver and that they were fine, but as a good friend I always wanted to make sure everything was okay.

I would have to just wait until the morning to find out.
