Chapter 8 - Thanksgiving
Meryl took a nap after she fed Wyatt breakfast, before he went outside to work, waking up again at lunch to feed him again and eat something herself before she also went outside to do some work in the barn. Penny woke up a short time later, after a very hard sleep due to her exhaustion from crying for so long to her mother, until she couldn't cry anymore. She knew it was late so she quickly washed up and went down to the kitchen to find a note, from her mother, that she would find sandwiches in the refrigerator and coffee, ready to perk, in the pot. Penny knew where her mother was, taking care of the horses, so she quickly ate something, drank a cup of coffee, then took two travel mugs to the barn to join her.
Meryl turned to the barn door, to see her daughter walk in, "So finally woke up." Meryl tried to act normal, with Penny because she knew that was probably what her daughter needed right now.
Penny gave her mother nod, "Yeah…..want some coffee?"
Meryl nodded back, then took a travel mug from Penny, "Thanks, Honey." It was cool inside the barn, so the hot coffee felt good as it filled Meryl's belly with warmth.
They both stood there a couple of minutes, just sipping their coffee, before Penny spoke again, "You want some help?"
Meryl gave her a small smile. "Sure Sweetie, could you do the stalls?"
Penny nodded, then placed her mug on a bench, to get a shovel and start to clean the stall. When Penny was a teenager she would shun such work, but that morning it felt good to be doing something where she didn't have to think and could just work. She worked hard, again welcoming the strain on her muscles, from the tiring work, and it actually felt good to have her mother nearby, her mere presence comforting to Penny as she helped her take care of the horses.
Meryl was happily surprised when her and Penny finished up everything in just over an hour, she had expected to be out there much longer, but Penny had been a huge help. Her daughter's working so hard at something she never enjoyed doing, was not lost on Meryl and as they put their tools away she watched Penny to try a get a feeling for how she was doing. "Sweetie, how are you feeling today, are you doing okay?"
Penny stopped in her tracks, she then took a big intake of air into her lungs. "Not really."
"Do you want to talk some more about it?" Meryl cautiously asked, and she saw her daughter nod her head slowly. "Come on lets get cleaned up and get some coffee, then we can talk." Penny just nodded again, then followed her mom to the house.
It was about a half hour later that both women were sitting at the kitchen table, after showers and putting on clean clothes, with filled coffee cups in front of them. Penny was really quiet and Meryl knew she wanted to talk, it was just that Meryl would have to get her started. As Meryl looked at her daughter and noticed her hands around the coffee cup, she knew just what to say to start her talking. "You're still wearing your engagement ring."
Penny pulled her hand up and looked at it, Meryl could see the extreme sadness in her eyes. "I don't want to take it off."
"Sweetie, why?" Meryl verbally nudged her to talk more.
A couple tears started to fall down her cheeks, "Because if I take it off…." the tears seemed to increase as they fell down her face. "….it will be really over." Penny now sniffled, trying hard not to break down and sob.
"Did Leonard want the ring back?" Meryl asked as gently as she could.
Penny shook her head, "He said it was mine, only mine and he would never take it back."
Meryl cocked her head, something suddenly coming into her mind. "Honey, did Leonard say you two were through, did he actually say the engagement was off and that he didn't want to see you anymore?"
Again Penny shook her head. "He said the trust was gone between us and he needed time away to think, so he needed to go to England by himself, so he could think."
Meryl just nodded, "So he didn't actually tell you that you both were through."
Penny sniffled, "Mom, he said we had a problem, and it was his fault because he loved me too much." Penny sniffled more. "I hurt him again, I'm always hurting him…..he would never do something like that to me…..I am such a horrible person…he is always proving does love me more than I love him." Penny's last words were barely understandable as she finally broke down crying.
Meryl scooted her chair next to her daughter and pulled Penny into her arms as she cried, trying to think of anything to help her. "Honey, he told you he still loves you, so I really think he is probably thinking as much about you as you are him. Truly loving someone is not something anyone takes lightly, so give him time and just see what happens."
Penny's crying turned to sniffles again, "Do you think he might take me back?" Desperate hope was so evident in her daughter's question, it made Meryl's heart hurt.
Meryl didn't want to lie to her daughter, "I don't know Sweetie, but I do think he hasn't given up on you yet."

It was late Sunday night and Leonard laid in bed, not able to sleep, just like the night before. Ever since his arrived in England, the weekends were always the worse for him, a time when he would think about the life in Pasadena he missed and like every weekend before, the source of his inability to sleep, his feelings towards Penny. He honestly didn't know what to do, his mind telling him to move on, its over, while his heart not wanting to let her go, telling him that he would never be happy without his soul mate.
Even though he didn't have an eidetic memory, he could still picture that day, her falling to her knees in front of him, holding him and telling him she loved him. What made it all worse for him, was her insistence she loved him unconditionally, too, that she wanted to marry him and spend her life with him, and his broken heart wanted so much to believe her. He knew he loved Penny, he would always love her and no matter how mad or hurt he got about what had happened that night with Sheldon, he still couldn't stop loving her. So, like many a night before, he laid there wondering how he could go on without her.
There was one big problem though he was still having trouble with, she was also the third girl to cheat on him and his rationale mind kept telling him he was pathetic, that if he went back to her he deserved to be hurt, again. He still remembered the relationship he had with the French professor, years before, even though they never spoke of marriage, she did tell him she loved him, while at the same time, he found out later, she was sleeping with her trainer at the gym. It hit him hard, she was his first true relationship and the first woman he exchanged "I Love You's", so when he found out about her cheating, it made him feel small, insignificant and helpless on top of being heartbroken. Then of course there was Priya, who also confessed her love for him, and at the time he actually thought about possibly marrying her, her cheating on him making him wonder if anyone really could ever love him. Now Penny, the girl he was suppose to marry, her cheating hurting him so much worse than the other two combined, he believed she was his soul mate, but how could his soul mate do that to him. Leonard pulled the pillow over his head and moaned in frustration, he couldn't figure what he should do and he knew because of that he wouldn't get much sleep that night.

Penny got up early and helped her mother Monday and Tuesday, with her chores in the morning, getting everything done so she could go riding in the afternoon. Both days she rode to the same place, a hill that was the highest point on her parents farm, to sit under the trees on top and think. Her mothers words about Leonard not being through with her yet, kept running through her mind and she couldn't help but derive some hope from those few simple words as she replayed them in her mind. She missed him so badly, but she could wait, wait as long as he needed, if only he would come back to her, as she still couldn't imagine her life without him.
It would have been simple if that was all that was on her mind, but a thought kept coming back to her, with her new found hope. If Leonard came back to her, it would be her last chance, she could never hurt him again and more importantly she never wanted to hurt him again. Penny sat on the hill, thinking back about her life with Leonard, how much he meant to her and how she wanted that life to continue forever. The girls told her once that she had to put in as much in their relationship as she took out, and as she thought of them together, she found herself serious lacking. It made her shiver as she realized Leonard was the reason their relationship worked, she was hardly trying at all, and that flicker of hope seemed to move away as Penny wondered why he would even want her back.
Penny began to sniffle, and as her emotions started to take over again, she got mad, not at Leonard, not at the world or anything else, but herself, she hated herself. And with that anger, she began mumbling, "What is wrong with me." over and over as she sat, until those words seemed to be ripped from her very soul and she jumped up, "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME!" she screamed from the top of her hill. However, there was no one to answer her question, her horse being the only thing alive to be scared by her words, as it galloped in fear for a quarter mile before it stopped and looked back at her. Penny though, didn't need an answer to her question, she knew the answer as soon as the words left her mouth, she needed to change, she needed to prove to Leonard she was the woman he deserved. Penny slowly walked down to her horse, she was tired and just wanted to lay on her bed and think, she knew what she needed to do, so it was time now to do something about it.

The day before Thanksgiving Penny spent the whole day with her mother, first doing the chores, then after getting cleaned up, helping her shop for the rest of the items they would need for Thanksgiving dinner the next day. Since her and her siblings moved out, her mother swapped doing Thanksgiving with her sister and tomorrow was her turn, so there would be several relatives at their house tomorrow, not something Penny was pleased about, but something she had to accept. However, even with all that, Penny wanted to help her mother, not only for something to keep her busy, but to also learn about cooking. Penny wanted to learn how to cook, she wanted to show Leonard that she wanted to be a wife to him, and she thought maybe being able to cook would help prove it. Penny saw it as the beginning of her change, it would be doing something positive for them, and besides she wasn't good at doing nothing while waiting for things to get better. So Penny spent Wednesday evening preparing things with her mother, watching and trying to remember all her mother was doing, and as an unexpected surprise gaining more respect for her mother watching all she did for her family.
Consequently Thanksgiving morning found Penny again in the kitchen, it actually made Meryl's heart soar to have her daughter there helping her and she enjoyed Penny's presence so much, it didn't even seem like work to get dinner ready. It was the first time one of her kids had been there to help her, and she wouldn't be honest with herself if she didn't admit she dreamed of the day it would happen. Although Penny's whole trip was to get comfort from being home and being with them, Meryl felt her and her daughter were bonding in ways they never had before, and she had been feeling closer to Penny each day. So it was when they where both taking a short break, drinking some coffee together in short moment of comforting silence, that they both heard Wyatt opening the front door to greet some of their relatives who had arrived.
Meryl's sister, Margaret arrived early with her husband, her plan to help her sister with dinner, like Meryl had done with her the Thanksgiving before. So it was with that intention that she immediately went to the kitchen after giving Wyatt a short Sister-in-Law hug. However, no sooner that Margaret entered the kitchen, she quickly recognized Penny sitting with Meryl, and it surprised her to see her niece already there. "Well Sis, I'm here, what do you need me to do." She then looked at her niece. "Honey why aren't you out there with your man?"
Meryl saw Penny stiffen up. "Marge, Penny has been helping me with dinner, so we got it. Why don't you take it easy today, visit for a little while."
"You sure Sweetie, I don't know what I'll do if I can't help a little." Margaret answered
"Maybe you could finish setting the table." Meryl now wanted to get her sister out of the kitchen, Penny was now tense, when she wasn't before.
"Okay, I can do that." Margaret then looked at Penny, "Penny honey, where is your fiancé?" Margaret asked again, making Penny look directly at her mother with pleading eyes.
"Marge, Leonard is not here, he is in England right now working with Dr Hawking on some important research." Meryl quickly told her.
"Dr…..who? He left you for Thanksgiving." Margaret again directed at Penny.
"Come on Marge you know who Dr Hawking is, they made that movie about him, he is one of the greatest scientists in the world, he invented time or something like that. This is a great honor for Leonard, Penny knows how important something like this is for Leonard and wouldn't let something like an old Thanksgiving, in Nebraska, prevent him from going."
"Couldn't he come back on Thanksgiving break?" Margaret didn't seem to want to let this go, Meryl thought.
"Marge, they don't celebrate Thanksgiving in England, so they don't take a break, it is just a normal week for them." Meryl told her sister
"Really, they don't celebrate Thanksgiving, well who would have thought. Well Sweetie, don't let him ditch you on any more holidays, no matter how important, next time just go with him." Penny looked up at her aunt and just nodded.
Margaret quickly started to get items for the table as Penny and Meryl stood up after that, to go back to work, and as her aunt left the room to the dinning room Penny looked at her mother. "Thanks mom."
Meryl smiled at her daughter, "This is family business honey, we don't need some gossipy relatives involved." Penny just nodded and got back to work.

It was about 2 PM when everyone sat down to Thanksgiving dinner, after Meryl and Margaret dragged their husbands from the football game. Penny was helping serve, with her mother, when she got a shock, Christie, (the whore of Omaha) came into the dinning room and sat down, next to her male cousin, Tommy. Penny stood there dumbfounded, while Christie took her seat and gave Penny a smile. "Hey Penny."
Penny looked at her mom in confusion, who quickly tried to explain. "Sweetie, you probably didn't hear, Christie and you cousin Tommy got married 6 months ago."
"I thought you were living in California." Penny asked the bimbo, still confused.
Christie gave Penny that annoying smile again, "Oh I left about two years ago and Tommy and I got together soon after I got back. Right Honey." Penny almost gagged as her cousin and Christie kissed, remembering that Leonard told her that after Howard had his fling with Christie, he bragged she gave the best fellatio in the world.
"So Penny, Tommy tells me you're engaged, where is he?" Christie now asked, making Penny tense up again.
"He is in England, working with that scientist guy they made a movie about." Margaret told her daughter-in-law, repeating what she was told before by Meryl.
Wyatt looked at Meryl, confused at what was happening, then noticed her shake her head slowly, letting him know to keep his mouth shut. Meryl then looked at Christie, "Yes Dr Hofstadter is working with Dr Hawking on some import research in England, it is a great honor for him."
Christie's eyes lit up, a now sly smile forming on her lips. "Wasn't he one of Howard's entourage? Are you engaged to one of those nerds?" Christie always thought Penny thought she was better than her, so she jumped on the chance to embarrass her, while she held Tommy's hand so all could see, because Tommy was quite buff and a real catch for her.
Meryl watched as Penny's face changed, she knew her daughter was angry. "Leonard was not one of Howard's entourage, is that what he lied to you about while you screwed his brains out, so he would buy things for you?" Penny then took a calming breath, "Leonard is a PHD in Experimental Physics and Dr Hawking, probably the smartest genius in the world, and he welcomes Leonard's opinion and help." Penny then put the bowl he was holding down and left the dinning room, going directly to her room.
Meryl looked at Margaret then at Christie, "Was that really called for? Do your really think bad mouthing the man, my daughter loves, is a good thing to do on Thanksgiving, when he is not here and she is missing him?"
Margaret looked sternly at Christie, who now didn't like all the eyes on her. "Christie that was not a very nice thing to do to family, you go right up there and apologize." Margaret's mad mother-in-law look had Christie now sinking back into the chair trying to look small, so everyone would stop looking at her.
Meryl stood up and put a hand on her sister's shoulder, "No, I'll check on her, Christie did enough damage for today." Meryl then glared at Christie who shrunk down in her seat even further.
Everyone was quiet as Meryl left to find Penny and after she left the room, Tommy looked at Christie, "Who the hell is Howard?" obviously a little upset.
The rest of the day was subdued for everyone, dinner going by without much talking, Tommy mad at Christie and Penny never returning, everyone else not knowing what to say. While everyone was eating desert, Meryl took Penny up some food and sat with her for a short time to comfort her and get her too eat. Later, Margaret helped Meryl clean up, while everyone else watched football in the living room, trying to ignore the yelling from the yard as Tommy made Christie tell him everything about Howard.
It was a little earlier that night, than usual, when the relatives decided to leave, Margaret hugging Meryl one last time while her family waited in the car. "I'm sorry Sis, I don't know why Tommy married that girl, I sort of knew she was no good and the rumors about her must have been somewhat true."
Meryl nodded, "Just keep her away from Penny, okay." Margaret nodded and hugged her sister again, then Meryl watched as Margaret went to the car, waved and then drove off.
Meryl felt Wyatt come up behind her and wrap his arms around her from behind. "Well that was fun." she said as she leaned back against him.
Wyatt nodded, "How is Penny."
"She is not okay. She really loves that man, Honey, I have never seen her like this before, she seems sort of lost, now that he is not with her. She has always been so strong, so it is hard seeing her now so weak and vulnerable and to be honest it is difficult to deal with…and it makes it really hard to try to help her." Meryl sighed. Wyatt kissed the back of Meryl's head and just held her a little tighter, to comfort her.

Penny sat on her bed, her laptop open and in her lap as she reread the email for about the tenth time. She had been working on it for over three hours and she forgot how many times she erased it and started over till she got to where she was now. This had been the longest time since they got back together that they had ever been completely apart with no communication at all, and it was the longest time they hadn't communicated, even as friends, to back when she couldn't even remember. She missed him so much, that she convinced herself that she could send him an email, and her mother's words, 'he hasn't given up on you yet' was giving her the courage to go through with it. It was just so hard to write the right words, when they were engaged she could send him anything and he would like it, and he too could make her happy with anything he sent. However now, she didn't know where their relationship was and what was safe to send him while he determined if that relationship would continue. Anyway, there was nothing more she could do, there was no other words she felt safe to say, so with a little trepidation she hit send.

Howard sighed as the night drew to an end at the Rostenkowski house, another awkward Thanksgiving at his in-laws house finally done. Even though Thanksgiving was a little bit of mess last year, he still missed his friends and would have rather spent the day miserable with them than with Bernadette's family. The only thing that made anything feel better was when his wife came over and plopped down beside him, she looked just a wore out as him, as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"About ready to leave?" she whispered
"I have been for hours now." Howard confessed.
"Okay." Bernadette dragged Howard up, to say goodbye to her parents and then lead him outside to their car.
As Howard started the engine, he looked at his beautiful blonde spouse, "Honey, No matter what happens with our friends, I want Thanksgiving with them next year, instead of this."
"Sorry Howie, I thought my father would change, but after today, I think I have given up hope. So yeah, next year with our friends. It just will be funny without Leonard and maybe Penny." she sighed.
"Yeah, I didn't think they would break up like that, Leonard is devastated." Howard sighed too.
"HE IS!" Bernadette's voice was several octaves higher than normal.
Howard looked at her. "Yeah, he has asked about her in his email last week and you know how he was when she dumped him the first time, what makes you think this time would be any different."
"He has? Did he say Penny dumped him?" his wife asked
Howard looked at her and could tell she was hiding something, "Why? What happened."
Bernadette's eyes went wide, "Nothing."
Now Howard knew something was up, "Honey, Leonard is my friend, what happened."
Bernadette just looked at him. "Bernie?" he pushed.
"Okay fine. But you can't say anything to Raj and you especially can't bring this up with Sheldon. You have to promise." She insisted.
"Okay." Howard replied reluctantly.
Bernadette took a deep breath, "Penny got drunk and slept with Sheldon."
Howard's eyes got huge. "Your freaking kidding me!"
Bernadette shook her head, "Leonard found them in bed."
"Sheldon…..you are telling me Penny had sex with Sheldon…..and Leonard caught them?" Howard said in disbelief.
Bernadette just nodded.
"Does Amy know?" Howard was still trying to process what she told him.
"She was with them." with that statement Howard shut the car off and just looked at her.
"What the frak! Sheldon had a threesome with Penny and Amy!" Howard now stared at his wife in complete disbelief.
"Yeah, but they were all drunk, so you better not say anything." Bernadette scolded him.
Howard sat there a couple minutes just trying to process what Bernadette told him, slowly shaking his head after a while, then looking back her. "Do you about anything that happened after he found them?"
Bernadette nodded, "He packed and left the apartment, then a couple days later he met Penny and told her he was going to England, so I guess you can say he left her."
Howard slowly nodded, "Good for Leonard."
"Howie how can you say that?" Bernadette responded, surprising him.
"What do you mean, Penny is obviously the cheater in this." Howard defended himself.
"But it is Penny and Leonard." Bernadette came back with.
"Bernie, if you found me in bed with Raj and some girl, and we had sex, who's fault would it be?" Howard said while looking at her.
Bernadette just stared at him, then feebly said, "But Penny is my friend and she is your friend, too."
"Yeah and Leonard is my friend too and your friend also, so where does that leave us?" Howard asked her.
Bernadette looked down at her hands, "I don't know."
Howard just nodded, then restarted the car to drive home.

With Leonard, Penny, Howard and Bernadette not available, Raj decided to cook Thanksgiving dinner for him and Emily, however, with so much food he decided to invite the fourth couple of their group to join them. Amy and Sheldon were about back to normal now, so Amy had no trouble convincing Sheldon that social convention dictated that they accept Raj's invitation. In addition, her reminding Sheldon that they would not have to deal with leftovers, finally making him agree to come, because he hated the concept of leftovers, it reminded him of pre-used food and who ate used food.
The evening actually went pretty well, the guys getting into a new video game while Emily and Amy talked about some medieval literature and knitting, Amy actually amazed how much her and Emily had in common. The only bump in the evening was when Raj mentioned he missed having everyone together, which Emily quickly answered that they were still having fun so it really wasn't so bad. Amy knew Emily didn't mind Penny not being there and she thought Raj understood too, especially as he quickly dropped the subject immediately after Emily's comment. Sheldon even seemed to have fun, staying longer at Raj's place that he originally agreed too when Amy convinced him originally to go. So it was even later that night, then they had planned, when they finally left to go home.
"That was nice wasn't it?" Amy asked Sheldon as they walked to her car.
"It wasn't unpleasant." Sheldon responded in away he felt didn't make it seem like he had been wrong when he told Amy, before they came, that he wasn't going to enjoy himself.
"Come on Sheldon, the food was good and you had two helpings. Also, you loved that new video game Raj had, I saw you smile several times after you beat him." Amy responded.
Sheldon sighed, "Okay, I had fun, you happy now." he answered with a huff.
Amy smiled, "Yes." as they got inside the car, Amy driving with that same smile on her face the whole trip back to Sheldon's apartment.
Amy pulled up to the apartment building front door to drop Sheldon off, but instead of giving her a quick kiss then running out to the apartment front door, he just turned and looked at her. "Amy would you like to come up for a few minutes?"
His words surprised Amy, "It is getting late Sheldon and I need sufficient sleep if I am to get up for work tomorrow."
Sheldon sighed, "Amy you work at Cal Tech now and the day after Thanksgiving is an optional work day for staff, so you can go in anytime tomorrow….or not at all."
Amy didn't understand what Sheldon was getting at, "Sheldon, I don't like staying out really late at night by myself and if I come up for a little while it will be past midnight when I go home."
Sheldon had been thinking about this all week, it had been several weeks after Leonard left now, and he had tried to get a roommate to replace him, because Sheldon found he now didn't like living alone. None of the people that applied were even remotely acceptable and as Sheldon put a list together on the qualities he wanted in a roommate, one person came immediately to mind. However, he didn't know if he could live with his girlfriend, so before he even thought about asking her, he needed to run a test and see if it was even possible. "You can spend the night, if it gets too late. Leonard's room has a bed with fresh sheets." Sheldon was so relieved once the words left his mouth, he had been agonizing over them all week.
Amy sat there staring at him, her mouth slightly open, words to reply seeming to escape her mind. She didn't even know if she heard him right, did he just ask her to sleep over? She didn't know how long she just looked at him, but she figured it must have been a while because the next words she heard were, "Amy are you alright." Sheldon asked confused.
Amy blinked, "Umm….Yes, I think so." Amy then swallowed, "Sheldon did you just ask me to spend the night?"
"Well, I asked you to come up for a little while and so if it gets too late, I don't want to have to go home too late." Sheldon explained in Sheldon Speak, which Amy understood and knew he was saying 'Yes'.
Amy hoped he couldn't hear her beating heart because it sounded like it was going to explode in her chest. "Okay." She responded, then almost fainted when she saw the small smile form on his lips, he wanted this, he really wanted this.
"I have something you could wear and I always keep a spare toothbrush, so you should be fine." Sheldon told her, the enthusiasm evident in his voice.
Amy swallowed again. "Please don't take this wrong, but I have an emergency sleepover bag in the trunk. You never know, when having a girls night with Penny, if you will need to sleep over at a moments notice."
Sheldon nodded and smiled. "Very well prepared Amy Farrah Fowler, I must say you continue to impress me."
"Thank you Dr Cooper." Amy said, teasing him and almost swooning at the smile he gave her and the twinkle in his eye.
Amy parked the car, and Sheldon lead her to his apartment carrying her overnight bag. The evening was the most romantic Amy ever had in her life, Sheldon actually let her lean against him while they watched a movie and they were in their pajamas. Just the thought that Amy didn't have to leave that night made her barely able to control the happiness she felt being there with her boyfriend. The goodnight kiss they shared, before they went to their bedrooms, was felt by every nerve in Amy's body and as she snuggled in Leonard's old bed, she felt a new sense of security knowing her boyfriend was only down the short hall from where she laid. A/N: I wanted to bring all the characters in on this chapter, to let the reader know where everyone was concerning Leonard and Penny. Also, I feel that the gang is all so close, that there would be no hate about what happened, when the others found out, but there would be actually sadness and sympathy.
