ME NO OWN FAIRY TAIL

Why?

"Why did you join that guild?"

Silence greeted Erza's question as Natsu gazed at her blankly, averting his eyes to the window beside him after a few seconds. The clock on the wall ticked behind the Fairy Tail members as they waited to hear Natsu's answer, their impatience growing thin by each tick the second hand made.

"I have my personal reasons." Natsu breathed. "And they're not worth mentioning." he said as he turned back to them, his face set and emotionless, eyes dull and dark. Erza clenched her jaw, clearly not happy with the answer she had received as she tried to calm her breathing.

"Enlighten me about these reasons, will you?" she asked harshly, Lucy and Gray looking at her with fear slightly in their eyes, but happy that the tone wasn't directed towards them. Natsu blinked a few times at Erza, the air around the scarlet haired girl growing tense as her anger rose.

"I was lost after my father abandoned me; I was trying to look for him everywhere. One of the guild members found me in the midst of a fight with a village man and recruited me once he saw my magic. I knew nothing about assassination at the time, or what it meant but I grew up in the guild and learned nothing but to kill without hesitation if ordered." he explained, his voice a little darker than what it had been before.

"Why don't you just run?" Erza asked, her jaw relaxing when she got the answer she wanted. Natsu's eyes darkened and narrowed, looking down at his lap.

"Would a mother run if her child is in danger and would a man run from his true love?" Natsu asked them, earning curious looks from the four.

"What do you mean?" Master asked slowly, not understanding. Natsu looked up once more, his eyes blank like they were before.

"Would you run from your only friend?" he asked them, ignoring the Master.

"No…" Lucy started, trailing off. "But I would run with that friend, I wouldn't leave them behind. Never." she said truthfully, Erza and Gray nodding in agreement. Natsu turned his blank stare to her.

"What if that friend was held in the person you dislike the most and they would kill that friend if you ran." he asked her, Lucy's and Erza's eyes widening.

"Y-you're not saying that you're being held there against your will because they'll kill your friend?!"
Erza stammered in surprise. Natsu averted his gaze to her, tilting his head just slightly.

"I said nothing of the like, you just jumped to conclusions." he replied, Erza's surprise turning into anger.

"Don't give me a roundabout answer! I asked you a question and you should answer it!" she shouted, banging her fist on the end of the bed. The edge of Natsu's lip turned up slightly in a smirk, only for the pink haired boy to fight against it.

"But who's to say I also didn't give you the answers you wished for?" he asked her, a low growl coming from Erza.

"Tell me! Are they or are they not keeping you there by the life of your friend?" she demanded in a shout. A ghost of a smile appeared on Natsu's lips as his bangs hid his eyes and he turned over, covering his head with the white crisp blankets, soft snores instantly coming from him. Erza growled in anger as she glared at the lump in the bed sheets and whirled around, stomping out of the infirmary only to be followed by Lucy and Gray. The Master was the last one left in the room with the boy as he stared at the lump with something akin to sadness in his eyes.

"I know you're faking." he commented though the snores did not cease. "All you need to do is ask for our help and we will save you and your friend from that guild, no matter the lives you had killed in the past. We don't ignore a plea for help." the Master told him, standing there a few moments before he turned around and exited the room, closing the door behind him softly.

The sheets slipped off Natsu's head, uncovering his face as the snores stopped once the door was closed. He shifted a little to get in a more comfortable position to look out of the window which the sunset began to shine through. His mind was plagued with thoughts of the earlier conversation he had with the Fairy Tail members, guilt weighing him down as his eyes fluttered to a close. A name was breathed from his lips before he fell into a restless slumber just as the sun set.

"Happy..."
