Chapter 20

Time Frame — Night of May 9th, 1986

3rd Person POV—

~Allen~

"Alright, this is what I've decided," Kanda declared, "To hell with all this prophecy shit! If the idiot rabbit really wants me to decide how we're going into this, fine, but don't go trying to tear me a new a one just because some so-called prophesy contradicts what I want to do. If we're doing this my way, Fate can go fuck itself over!"

Allen attempted to refrain from face-palming. And failed.

Currently, all the Exorcists were gathered—and slightly squished—around a table, upon which lied a hand-drawn map of where their final confrontation against the Noah would take place. Lavi's deduction of Alma being 'The Guide' had actually been quite easy to prove, as Alma was beginning to get glimpses of where it was that they'd need to go, and furthermore, his Innocence powered hand had acted of its own accord, drawing up a map when the idea was brought up; most of the landscape was barren, one side obstructed with mountains, with a bordering forest edging around on the other side. Unfortunately, Allen was seriously doubting the idea of Kanda be the so-called 'Strategist', and was wondering if Lavi had been in his right state of mind when thinking up the idea.

The redhead held his hands up in a placating gesture. Which contrasted sharply with the large, teasing grin on his face. "Calm down, Yuu, no need to get so worked up!"

Knowing Bookman is alive certainly lifted his spirits, Allen thought dryly.

"Che," Kanda grunted with a scowl, before turning back to the map. "Alright, let's start out with you rabbit." Pointing to a rock outcropping the jutted off one of the mountains, he said, "This is where I'm stationing you. The Noah are enough of a pain to deal with, without the added hell Akuma will bring, so I'm putting you in charge of taking care of them. Akuma usually fly in hordes, so I expect you to use your elemental abilities to eradicate them in large numbers."

"Aww, thank you, Yuu! Your trust in my abilities is very flattering," Lavi gushed, fluttering his single eye in a ridiculous manner.

Kanda's eye twitched. "Also, I'm saddling you with the two brats," he said blandly.

Lavi blanched. "Eh?! Why me?!"

"Hey!" Timothy called out indignantly, head barely surpassing the table.

"That's not very nice," Mei-Ling grumbled under her breath, and Allen patted them both on the head with a resigned sigh.

"Because," Kanda stressed, "Those brats will hardly stand a chance against Noah members, and the rest of us will be too busy to keep an eye on them. The only thing they've managed to learn at this point is how to fight Akuma, so they'll be your backup. They'll take care of any stray Akuma that manage to get past you."

"That's very considerate of you, Kanda," Lenalee beamed, relieved to know that the two, young children would be kept away from the real danger.

Daisya snickered, a sly grin spreading. "Who knew Kanda had a heart?"

"You guys, don't be so mean!" Alma was quick to jump to his defense, "Yuu isn't so bad."

"As much as I appreciate the boost in confidence," Kanda bit out, giving them all the stink eye, "Can we move on?"

"Yeah!" General Socaro butted in with a growl, "I want to know who the rest of us are going to fight! How many of these damn Noah are there, anyway?! They're like fucking cockroaches; no matter how many we kill, they keep coming back for more!"

They all sweatdropped in response to the clueless general, and Allen was the one who deemed it to answer, "Um, there are thirteen Noah, General Socaro…"

"Well, technically there are only eight at this point," Lavi piped up.

"The hell? Only eight? I know the beansprout killed the dumbass duo, and I got rid of the big one, but who killed another two?" Kanda demanded, and the Exorcists exchanged curious glances, wondering who it could be, and then looked towards Lavi, when none of them stepped up. But Lavi had faltered, once he noticed Allen's pained expression out of the corner of his eye.

"I-it was Allen!" They all glanced in surprise towards the normally quiet Mei-Ling. At their curious gazes, Mei-Ling flushed, but elaborated nonetheless, "It was during the attack at Headquarters; we ran into a pair of Noah, and Allen killed them in order to protect Timothy and I…"

"Y-yeah!" Timothy was quick to agree, "Allen was protecting us!"

"Huh. Right, well, whatever," Kanda shrugged it off, "Just makes it easier for us."

"Do we know any of the abilities of the remaining Noah?" Suman suddenly spoke up with an uneasy frown. "It would certainly make it easier to choose opponents if we can take their abilities into account."

Kanda let out a frustrated sigh, and that's when Allen suddenly realized the weight they must have loaded on him; expecting him to make all these decisions; decisions that could cost them their lives. It certainly wasn't fair to do so based on some prophecy, and Allen opened his mouth, attempting to convey this, but Kanda's expression had abruptly hardened. Much more determined, Kanda swiveled his head back towards Lavi and said, "Rabbit, despite your idiotic personality, you're still a Bookman. What information do you have on the Noah?"

The redhead frowned for once, seeming conflicted, before exhaling heavily. "Gramps is so going to kill me," he grumbled underneath his breath, before turning back to Kanda, "It's not much; the only records we have on the Noah are each representation of Noah, their name, and their basic ability. That's it; no weaknesses or even level of power. Even when the Bookman Clan last sided with the Noah to record their side of the war, they were unwilling to reveal much of anything. Personalities don't matter much at this point because the memories of Noah have already reincarnated into new humans. Well, except for one that is."

"Who?"

"Road Kamelot; 9th Apostle; Noah of Dreams," Lavi listed off clinically.

"Whoa, wait a minute," Gwen (an Exorcist that Allen still remained unfamiliar with) piped up, "Why would only one of them remain un-reincarnated?"

Lavi seemed to have a mental debate with himself, before admitting, "Because excluding her and the Earl, they were all massacred by one of their own, almost 35 years ago."

A shocked silence permeated the room, before Lenalee shakily broke it, "W-what? Which one of them was the traitor?"

"An anomaly," Lavi replied thoughtfully, "The Fourteenth."

"Damn! What the hell!" Socaro's voice practically boomed, "What happened to "thirteen"?!"

Lavi sighed heavily, a hand running absentmindedly through his auburn locks, further messing up the wild spikes. "That's what was thought. But then he showed up out of nowhere, in the previous set of reincarnations. Not even the Millenium Earl himself understood it, but he accepted it without question, and it cost him greatly. I know Gramps knows more about it, but the full set of records is sealed off to me, since I'm only his apprentice."

"He may be a Noah," Daisya eventually mused, "But we share a common goal; maybe if we can find the guy, we could form a temporary alliance."

But Lavi shook his head. "Impossible. He was killed off by the Earl. Considering it was his first appearance, he might've only been a onetime deal." Pausing, he then added, "It's probably for the best though…" This undoubtedly piqued everyone's interest, and Lavi's eye briefly made contact with Allen's own moonlit orbs, as if recalling something. "Just something I came across, but it appears that the Fourteenth grew hungry for power; the reason he massacred the Noah was not to rid the world of their evil, but to become the new Millenium Earl himself."

Allen blinked, recalling the meeting they'd once had with Road, long ago, when she had revealed Neah's true motives. The reminder only served to cement Allen's own goal of ridding himself of the Noah.

"Of course he turns out to be a complete whack job," Daisya scoffed.

"Back to the point," Kanda steered them back, "What Noah are we dealing with, rabbit?"

"Wait, first," Lavi began, "Let's figure out who we're not dealing with. What Noah have been killed so far?"

"The Noah of Bonds; Jasdero and Devitto," Allen recalled, eyes dimming when remembering how easily he'd given into his rage; into the Noah.

"Right," Lavi mentally crossed them off, "The 10th and 11th Apostles."

"Hell if I remember his name, but I killed the Noah of Wrath," Kanda inputted.

Lavi nodded, "The 8th Apostle."

"Ah, I believe the Noah Allen fought against called themselves Mercym and Lulubell," Mei-Ling said.

"Huh," Lavi titlted his head thoughtfully, "I recognize the name Mercym; it's the name of the Noah of Pity, the 7th Apostle. But Lulubell doesn't ring any bells…"

Allen racked his brain for anything that might seem useful, before recalling a tidbit from the previous timeline. "Um, I think she's a shape shifter…"

Kanda scoffed. "You killed the Noah, and you don't even remember how she fought…?"

The young general's expression soured. "No one was asking you, Mr. Kitchen Knife!" At least Tyki was useful for something

Before the argument could further escalate though, Lavi's expression brightened with recognition. "Ah, I see! I believe that would be the Noah of Lust! The 12th Apostle… Alright, let's go back to the beginning. Obviously, the Earl is reserved for our little shortstack here—"

"It's Allen!"

"—and even if you all think that these prophecies are a load of rubbish, Lenalee should probably still be there as backup," Lavi decided, and said Chinese girl quickly nodded in agreement with a determined expression. Lavi continued, "On to the next Apostle; the Noah of Judgment. Don't have many details on him, other than the fact that he's an excellent swordsman…"

"I'll take him," Kanda was quick to decided, and nobody objected.

"Right, just head for the guy with sword, then. Next up is the Noah of Pleasure—"

"Tyki," Allen grimaced, "That's going to be bit tricky. He can pass through anything; excluding Innocence, of course. We'd need someone with a long-range weapon." They swiftly glanced at one another, before all gazes finally landed on Marie. Despite being sightless, Marie seemed to understand the implication, and nodded in acceptance. Frowning thoughtfully, Allen added, "I don't know if that'll be enough though. He's quite slippery. We certainly outnumber them, so maybe tag-teaming some of the Noah would be a good idea…"

Kanda nodded stiffly in agreement—as if the very action itself were painful—and decided, "Suman, you've worked with Marie plenty of times before, so you might be the best choice. Marie will work to confine the Noah, and you'll administer the killing blow."

Suman nodded grimly. "Understood."

"Alright," Lavi resumed, lips pursed as he rummaged through his memories and said, "I believe the next is Noah of Desires; he uses a very effective technique called Body Manipulation. I don't know how it works, but it seems he can physically control others at will."

"I don't really think there's any of us that can specifically fight against that," Alma pointed out, "Tag-teaming him as well would probably be our best option. I volunteer."

"And I'll back him up," Daisya stepped up.

"Um, one problem you two," the female Exorcist known as Tina spoke up, "We've never come across this Noah before. The Noah Kanda's fighting against can be recognized by his sword, and Tyki Mikk has already been sighted, so we know who he is, but how can you confront this Noah without a clue as to which one he is? You might take on the wrong opponent."

Everyone frowned, becoming frustrated, but Lavi held up a quick finger. "Wait!" Rapidly running over all the information in his head, Lavi finally said, "I think there's a way to identify the other Noah. If so, then it'll only be a quick process of elimination, but both of you will have to pay careful attention to the other descriptions." Once they nodded in understanding, Lavi carried on, "Okay, the next on the list is the Noah of Wisdom. He can be recognized by the extra eyes on his forehead; this is known as his Demon Eye, which allows him to read his opponent's thoughts…"

They all grimaced at this, but Gwen ultimately spoke up, "I'd probably be the best candidate, what with my Innocence weapon."

"She won't be able to do it alone though," Tina objected, "So I'll partner up with her."

"Alright," Kanda consented, before nodding towards Lavi. "Who's next?"

"Noah of Corrosion," Lavi wrinkled his nose in distaste, "Parasitic Tongue; injects volatile parasites into the victim. Definitely can't miss it."

"I'll take him on," Krory spoke up for the first time, a wicked smirk curling at his lips, showcasing the set of razor-sharp teeth. There were no objections.

"The next one, we all know too well. Road, Noah of Dreams," Lavi continued, "She's not a combat type, though. Enjoys playing mind-games, and will probably leave a victim brain dead before torturing them."

"It seems to me," Lenalee began with a thoughtful frown, "That Road would most likely stick close to the Earl, if we take the massacre into account. And if that turns out to be the case, I would most likely have to confront her, just to keep each other from interfering with Allen and the Earl's fight."

Allen frowned. "Lenalee, are you positive you can handle it? Road is quite vicious, and if you're not mentally prepared to handle it, she'll drive you insane."

"I'll have to handle it," Lenalee forced through gritted teeth. She chewed on her lip, and then added as an afterthought, "And besides, there's only one other Noah left, and I'm sure General Socaro would want to have a much more violent confrontation."

"Hell yeah!" Socaro thundered, slamming his fist onto the table in approval. Fortunately, he didn't add enough force to puncture through the wood. "So who am I up against?"

"Ah, the Noah of Ability," Lavi replied, "He's the mastermind behind the technology the Noah use such as the Ark and the Skulls. He's a magician, so he'll definitely have a lot tricks up his sleeves. If you overwhelm him with brute force, you might have a chance at winning, but you should tread with caution."

"Yeah, yeah! I'll kick his ass!" General Socaro cackled, before turning to Kanda, "So how are we going into this? I say we just attack straight away!"

Kanda scowled. "Then it's a good thing you don't get a say! Alright, rabbit, you and the brats will remain hidden until all the Noah are engaged in battle; we don't need one of them sneaking off beforehand because they sensed you. I need you focused on the Akuma, and getting a Noah involved will just get messy."

"General Socaro did bring up a good point though," Alma piped up, "How are we going into this?"

Kanda narrowed his eyes in thought. "I don't think there's any getting around it," he eventually admitted, "Hiding and playing games will only become redundant at this point; we'll have to—"

He was interrupted by a terrified squeak from Mei-Ling. Wide eyes glued to her sword, the small Chinese girl exclaimed, "The Noah! They're gathering already! It's time!"

Time Frame — Night of May 10th, 1986

~Lavi~

The Bookman Junior took a deep breath; even up high, he could feel the rising tension. It was smothering; Innocence crackling with power as the first stages of the battle began to play out. And in the distance, a massive, black cloud buzzed with energy as it drew nearer, vibrating with bloodlust.

"Looks like our little friends have arrived," Lavi shouted over his shoulder, towards Mei-Ling and Timothy. "Get ready for a storm!" Above him, elemental seals lit into existence, whirling around him, and with a mad grin, the redhead leaped, slamming his hammer into one of them as he called out, "Heaven Stamp: Violent Thunder, Whirling Skies!"

The effect was instant. The winds hollowed, bellowing against drifting clouds and accumulating them into opaque masses, lightning sparking to life and tearing the skies apart, thunder booming and crashing; raging and reverberating across the barren landscape. Bitter gusts ripped at their clothing, biting at their faces and stinging their eyes, but Lavi could only smile in satisfaction, as the Innocence-charged storm collided against the throngs of Akuma, purging them by the masses. But it wouldn't be enough.

Confident that the storm would continue to rage on, Lavi called upon his elemental seals once again and clashed his hammer against a combination of two, shouting, "Combo Stamp: Terrible Lightning of Heaven!"

With a mighty roar, a blazing, colossal snake raged to life, the fiery being crackling, as lightning flashed and flickered its inverted limbs into a jagged current that coiled around the flaming beast; it hissed, twisting in agitation and then springing forth, rampaging amongst the screeching Akuma, as it devoured them in heaps.

"Damn it! They're growing closer!" Lavi shouted, as the surviving Akuma began to descend above them. "Prepare to hold them back!"

Timothy and Mei-Ling exchanged nervous glances, but nonetheless, followed the redhead's instructions, readying their Innocence as the maddened Akuma flooded before them.

~Allen~

The skies rumbled overhead, and in the distance, Allen could see the bright flashes of lightning and fire alike, as Lavi set to work against the Akuma. It was a small comfort. Around him, the clashing of Dark Matter against Innocence resonated in a roaring ocean of power that charged the air itself with an electrifying ambiance. Beside him, Lenalee stood, both of them facing the mad grin of the Millenium Earl himself, Road perched on his shoulder with a wicked grin.

And in the back of his mind, Allen could hear the rattling chains the Fourteenth fought against. With an irritated growl, Allen clamped down on them, momentarily quieting the Noah.

"Allen Walker~!" the Earl hummed with an eerie chuckle, Road jumping down to his side as he casually swung his sword—an inverted version of Allen's own—as if they were not enveloped in a raging battle of Exorcist versus Noah.

"Earl," Allen bit out, readying his Sword of Exorcism.

"I knew it~!" the Maker suddenly exclaimed with a loud, piercing cackle. "I should have killed you that night~! You've ruined everything… I should have killed you… but, you hold my precious Neah within you~. Why don't you give in, Allen Walker~? Give in, and join me~!"

"Allen," Lenalee whispered in a wary tone beside him, "What is he talking about?"

"He's completely and utterly lost it," Allen replied blandly, and then shouted to the Earl, "Your issues with Neah have nothing to do with me, Earl! Now, will you fight?"

The Maker tilted his head, and if possible, his maniac grin spread, burnt gold eyes narrowing. "You don't seem to understand, boy—"

"And don't think you can just throw your life away in this war, Allen. You, Neah; that's Millenie's prize, and he'll stop at nothing to get to you."

"No!" Allen cut him off, recalling Road's words. "I understand perfectly. You're sick, twisted, and positively mad, Earl! You've cost me a great deal, and I don't think I can ever forget the hell this war has put me through. Which is why, I am ending this!" With a shout, Allen charged, swinging his broadsword forth, clashing against the Millenium Earl's own sword with a vibrating clang the momentarily shook him. But he pushed forward with all his might, meeting the massive grin of the devil himself, eyes narrowed with determination.

As if he were a mere pest, the Earl chuckled, and leaning closer, he whispered without unlocking his grin, "Are you sure you want to do this, Neah~? You once killed our precious family, and I could easily return the favor~."

Not understanding the meaning behind his words, Allen simply snarled, "I. Am. Not. Neah!" He then forcefully veered his sword, the metal screeching as the sharp edges were chaffed, vehemently shoving away the Earl and causing him to skid back. But the Maker merely laughed with glee, bounding to the side, wicked eyes set on a different target altogether.

Lenalee! Allen realized with horror. But the upgrade in her Innocence had made an incredible difference, and she was quick enough to evade the Earl's attack. "I see you've all grown powerful~," the Maker mused, not at all deterred by his failed attack.

"Your fight is with me!" Allen bellowed, lunging once again, swords crashing with metallic screeches as they fought, Lenalee jumping in and blocking and fatal hits. Their teamwork momentarily caused him to stagger, but he then returned with just as much force

"Who can I hurt then, to get revenge~?" the Earl continued to muse, before abruptly disengaging and taking and clutching Road in a chokehold.

Shocked, Allen stumbled to a sudden halt, eyes wide and brow furrowed in confusion. "… You would hurt one of your own?"

"M-Millenie?" Road gasped, hands grasping at the single one that clasped her, face crumpled with horror at his traitorous actions.

"Don't think I don't know!" he growled, voice unexpectedly losing its tilting note, crazed eyes narrowed dangerously. "Neah, I could understand, but you, Road?!" he demanded, throttling her, neck on the verge of snapping. "You dare think you could betray me!"

"No—" her cry was cut off by another vicious shake.

"Watch, Exorcist," he gazed back towards the stupefied Allen, "What happens when those you care about go against me." With a prompt slash of his sword, he tore her body apart, releasing her with a sickening squelch and allowing her to bleed out. Her agonized screams echoed eerily around them.

"Lenalee," Allen said carefully, body trembling with surmounting rage, vision turning a hazy red.

"Y-yes?" she stammered, astonished at the unfolding events.

"Take care of Road for me."

Allen exploded.

There was no time to think. No time to feel. Only to act.

Allowing the all-consuming anger within him to overtake, Allen flashed forward, blood rushing and pumping loudly, swelling in his veins as if ready to explode, heart speeding and hammering furiously. With a deafening cry, Allen thrust his broadsword forward, unrelenting in his assaults, lunging left and right in an attempt to overwhelm his opponent.

Dimly, Allen noticed the Noah trying to take advantage of his rage. But this was his revenge, and Allen wasn't having any of it.

Across the reflection that the Earl's lenses offered, Allen was able to briefly note the flash of gold that flickered across his irises.

"N-Neah?!" the Maker choked.

It was the opening Allen needed. With a mighty cry, he lunged forth.

~Alma~

"Daisya! Where are you going?!" Alma demanded desperately, squirming underneath the taut strings he'd unfortunately been captured in, by the Noah known as Sheryl Kamelot.

"Allen. I need to…" Daisya mumbled dazedly, stumbling away. His Innocence—upgraded now to a secondary level, in which thorny spike were able to protrude from them—was tightly clenched in his hands, the grazes it caused hardly seeming to faze him.

"Ah, but I can't have you running off now," the Noah of Desires chuckled darkly, his other hand moving forward, fingers wiggling as if ready to enrapture Daisya as well. But the Noah unexpectedly lurched forward with a gasp, releasing Alma as he abruptly collapsed, ash skin paling to an olive tone. And by then, Daisya was long gone.

"… What the hell is going on?!"

~Mei-Ling~

Mei-Ling shrieked.

"Hey! Hey! What's the matter?!" Lavi raced over and shook the trembling girl, but she could only shake her head, eyes distant and glazed over with fear as her sword slipped between her fingers, clattering onto the ground. "Did you see something?" Lavi demanded desperately, attempting to shake her back to reality.

Suddenly coming to her senses, Mei-Ling wrenched away and blurted in panic, "Allen! He's going to be—"

~Allen~

Detachedly, Allen gazed down at the corpse of the Millenium Earl. Certainly, his sword was meant to exorcise, not kill; but the human body the Earl had inhabited was only a hallow shell of what it once was. The body had been used beyond what a normal human was meant to live, and so slowly, the corpse crumbled to pieces, before gradually fading to dust. Allen leaned heavily against his sword, eyes clenched, relieved tears leaking through as the weight of the world was finally lifted off of his shoulders. And then, a pained cry seized his attention.

"Road!" Allen croaked, stumbling towards the pair of girls. "Lenalee, how is she?" he demanded, crouching beside her, moonlit eyes roving over Road's crumpled body, fresh, crimson blood flowing and staining everything around her, including Lenalee.

Lenalee bit her lip, and then pressed her lips into a thin line, eyes narrowed. "Not good," she admitted, "I think the power of the Earl himself prevented her from being able to heal herself. I tried to contain the blood flow, but the gash is too large. At this point, I think it was only her Noah keeping her alive, but now that that's gone…"

"Gone?!"

Glancing at him, Lenalee elaborated quietly, "Y-you killed him, Allen. The Millenium Earl; the 1st Apostle. And with him, you exorcised every Noah as well…"

"I killed her…" Allen choked out, unable to stare at Road any longer, head turned, eyes gritted closed as more tears spilled. And in the depths of his mind, he could feel the Noah still there; fighting for control. Allen choked on a cynical laugh. Of course. Of course, Neah had to be the oddity. The one that didn't conform to the Noah rules; still alive; still pestering Allen with his very existence.

Lenalee clenched his hand. "No," she whispered, "You saved her humanity."

"A-Allen…" Both their heads swiveled to the now human girl, shocked as she slowly, but painfully, blinked open her violet eyes. Allen rapidly shifted closer, gently cradling her broken body in his arms, eyes filled with regret.

"Road, I-I'm sorry—"

A bitter laugh bubbled from her lips, blood gurgling at the back of her throat before spilling from her mouth. "I-it's all your fault…" Road whispered, voice rasping, eyes dimming. "He went mad because of you…" she continued, voice barely audible, eyes slowly shifting over to meet Allen's, the accusation that lay in their murky depths like a sledgehammer to his chest. Heart constricting, Allen could only try to breath past the aching in his chest and the lump in his throat, allowing Road to continue her final words, "All of you… Cross, Mana, Neah…" Her lips trembled, and tears welled up, cascading down the sides of her cheeks, and despite choking on her own blood, she managed to say lastly, in a strangled voice, "I curse you… I-I curse you, Allen Walker…"

Allen could only remain frozen as she became limp, her words smothering him with an ache so deep, that tears could do it no justice. He simply became numb, eyes glazed over as old wounds began to fester, hatred consuming him and burying him under something so potent and vile, he could feel himself suffocating beneath it.

"Allen."

Dimly, Allen glanced up, the panic in the familiar voice stirring something within him.

"Daisya?" Lenalee called wearily, and it was then that Allen realized that she had her arms around him. "Is… is something the matter?"

But Daisya only stumbled forward, an expression of panic overwhelming his features, as if he were unable to control his own actions. "I'm—" he seemed to choke on the word alone, knuckles whitened from the taut grip that remained on the enlarged bell that was his Innocence, spikes protruding from it and gleaming ominously. Lenalee's shriek pierced the night, as Daisya suddenly thrust it forward. "—sorry!"

Allen gasped, the Innocence protruding from his chest, the Noah genes within him screaming with agony. Slumping over, onto Road's corpse, Allen could manage no words, as the life within him seeped away, to leave behind yet another casualty.

A/N: Um, I thought Neah dying along with the rest of the Noah memories was kind of anti-climatic, so… Ahhh! *wails* I can't believe I killed Allen! *dies from the shock*
