Chapter 28: St. Mungo's
When Lily opened her eyes, she was meant with darkness. As her eyes adjusted, she saw that she was still in St. Mungo's. Her head ached, but other than that she felt fine. James lay in the bed across from hers, sleeping soundly. The curtains around Sirius' bed were drawn shut and Karen's bed was empty.
She sighed. She had had a lot of time to think about everything that had happened over the past few weeks. She didn't know if it was wise for her to stay at James' house, but she certainly didn't want to move back into her flat. Now that place was full of bad memories.
She looked over at James again. His handsome face looked so innocent when he was sleeping. His hair was as messy as ever, probably more so after that shower. The side of his cheek was scratched a bit, probably from something Bellatrix did while she was incoherent. Her eyes drifted farther down. The top two bottoms on his shirt were undone, leaving just enough for a woman to fantasize about. Of course, Lily didn't have to fantasize. She'd already seen his sculpted chest and the anatomy just below that.
Lily shook her head. She shouldn't be thinking about that. Especially when she was in a hospital bed almost too weak to walk. She sighed and turned over. Wet dreams would have to wait until the morning. Right now, she needed some well deserved sleep.
"Do you think we should wake her?" a famine voice asked quietly.
"Shh, she needs her rest," another answered.
"Why don't you both shut your mouths? I'm trying to sleep," a male voice called.
"Shut up, Sirius!" the first voice hissed.
Lily opened her eyes ever so slightly. She saw Alice glaring at Sirius. Her hair was shorter than the last time Lily had seen it, now reaching her chin and flaring out at the ends. It was a good look for her. Her brown eyes boring a hole in the back of Sirius' head. Dorcas sat on a chair at the end of Lily's bed. She flipped her long brown hair over her shoulder and rolled her eyes. Frank stood next to Alice smiling. His black hair shown, making it look darker with his pale complexion.
"I think she's awake!" Dorcas shouted, her eyes lighting up.
"Oh, Lily!" Alice exclaimed. She ran over and hugged her. "I know I just saw you like twelve hours ago, but when you were gone it really scared me and oh. . . ."
Alice started sobbing while she held onto Lily. Lily patted her back and gave her a squeeze. She had missed this. After a moment or two, Dorcas came over and removed Alice from Lily.
"How are you feeling?" she inquired.
"A little light-headed, but other than that I'm fine," Lily reassured her.
"That's good," Dorcas said. "Are you hungry?"
"A little."
"What do you want?"
"Honestly, I don't care."
Alright, I'll get something for you."
Dorcas stood and left the room.
"So what did I miss?" Lily asked Alice as she sat up.
"Not much, although Remus went over to Dorcas' one night," Alice informed her.
"Really?!" Lily squealed. "Oh my gosh! I have to ask her about this!"
Suddenly a pillow hit her head.
"Ok, Remus went over to Dorcas', they probably slept together, get over it!" Sirius growled, peeking out from his hangings, "I am trying to sleep."
"Oh you'll get over it," Alice told him, sticking her tongue out at him.
"How do you live with her?" Sirius asked Frank.
"You get used to not having any privacy," Frank said. "At all."
Sirius rolled his eyes and poked his head back into his hangings.
"I'm back!" Dorcas called cheerfully. "I got you an omelet if that's ok."
"That sounds great," Lily replied.
Dorcas sat the food on her lap and gave her a fork.
"What about me?" James yawned from the bed across them. He was stretching when Alice threw her arms around him hugging him tightly.
"Alice. . . . .I can't breath," James breathed out.
"Sorry," Alice apologized releasing him.
"So what did I miss?" he asked. "Besides you not bringing me breakfast."
"Sirius threw a pillow at Lily," Dorcas told him.
"Git," James mumbled.
"I heard that!" Sirius called.
"Shut it!" James called back playfully. "So did you catch anyone when you found us?"
"One," Alice said. "The others got away before we could stop them."
"That's unfortunate," James sighed. "Do you need names?"
"The Healers said not to bother you, but names would be nice," Frank told him.
"Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa Black, Bellatrix Black, Rodolphus Lestrange, and Rabastan Lestrange," James recalled. "I can't remember anyone else."
"I'll have them checked out," Frank told them. "You were at the Malfoy Manner so that incriminates them."
"That's something," Lily mumbled.
"Oh, I forgot to give you this," Dorcas said suddenly.
She pulled out a wrinkled piece of parchment and Lily took it. It was from St. Mungo's. It stated that she was excused from her training for the next week to recover. Lily stared down at it. She didn't want to think about would happen when she left St. Mungo's. She really didn't want to go back to her apartment.
Someone talking pulled her from her thoughts.
"What does it say?"
"It says that I have a week to recover before I go back into the Healer Training Program," Lily told Dorcas.
The sound of footsteps made everyone turn around. Remus smiled at them.
"Hey, guys," he greeted. "I came to see how you were doing."
Lily looked at Dorcas. She had turned back to Lily as soon as she saw Remus enter the room. It wasn't like Dorcas to ignore someone. She was usually the friendliest person in the room. She was had always liked Remus, but that never made her shy around him. Lily watched as she played with the wrinkles in her skirt, wondering what happened while she was away.
"Hey there, Moony!" James called. "They're trying to kill me!"
Remus rolled his eyes. "I'm sure they aren't trying to kill you."
"But I'm starving," James whined.
"I'll go get you something," Dorcas told him, jumping up. She hurried out of the room and past Remus with her head hung down.
"Thank you!" James yelled after her.
Remus came over gave Lily a hug. "How are you?"
"Fine, thanks," Lily replied.
"I'm your best friend and all I get is 'they aren't trying to kill you'?" James complained.
"Really, James?" Alice sighed.
Before James could answer, Karen appeared from behind Sirius' drawn curtains. She was unaware of all the people watching her as she stretched. She rubbed her eyes and started back to her bed across the room.
"Did you sleep well?" Alice asked loudly.
Karen jumped and turned to face her. She smirked. "Very."
Frank snorted.
"If you're going to start talking about shagging then I'm leaving."
"Not while I'm in the room they're not," James huffed. "That's my best mate."
"You slept with him for seven years," Karen teasted. James' mouth fell open.
"I did not!" James proclaimed. "Sirius and I are best mates, and my interest remains solely in girls."
"Keep telling yourself that!" Sirius called from behind his curtains.
"Shut up, you dickhead!" James shouted. He huffed and crossed his arms while everyone laughed.
Dorcas came back holding a tray of steaming bacon, eggs, and a glass of orange juice.
"Thanks," James said. "At least someone cares about me."
Dorcas rolled her eyes.
"Where did you get that?" Karen asked.
"You want some don't you?" Dorcas predicted.
"Yes," Karen replied.
"I'll be right back," Dorcas said. "Sirius, do you want anything?"
"Sure, why not," Sirius pulled the curtains away from his bed. "Beautiful morning."
"Do you have to sleep all morning?" Alice asked.
"Do you have a problem?" Sirius asked. He patted the spot next to him and Karen came to sit with him.
Alice just rolled her eyes. "Do you ever get sick of him?"
"Sometimes I go into the bathroom to plan out a way to kill him, other than that no," Karen said thoughtfully.
"Did you hear that, Prongs?" Sirius faked hurt. "If I go missing, now you know who to blame."
"I'll remember that," James replied airily.
"There wasn't much a line this time," Dorcas told them as she reappeared in the doorway. She had one tray with two plates of eggs, bacon, and sausage. "Here you are."
"Thanks," Karen said while Sirius started to eat his food.
"I love you, too, Sirius," Dorcas rolled her eyes and sat down.
"S-sorry, I-I'm late," Peter panted as he leaned against the doorway.
"Wormtail!" Sirius shouted through his food.
"That was disgusting," Karen wiped a piece of food off her cheek.
"Sorry," Sirius mumbled through his mouthful.
"So what happened exactly?" Peter inquired.
After Frank and Alice finished telling Peter what happened, a Healer came in.
"Good, everyone's up," she said smiling. "I brought you your clothes. You can go anytime you're ready."
Lily sighed as she drew the curtains around her bed. Dorcas passed her her clothes through the curtains.
After she finished dressing, she slipped out of the curtains. She saw that James was done as well. He seemed deep in thought so Lily didn't say anything.
"Would you two hurry up?" Frank called.
"Just a second," Karen answered.
"Where are you going, Lily?" Dorcas asked.
Karen and Sirius had come out by now and were watching her.
"I was thinking I would got back to my flat," she told them.
"No!" James suddenly shouted. "I mean. . .you could stay at my house until they get it checked out. Make sure it's safe."
Lily nodded. "Okay."
She was relieved when James said that. She didn't want to go back to that flat. She was afraid. Very afraid.
