Chapter 33: Work and Milkshakes

Lily woke up early that morning. She dressed her lime green uniform and crept out of her room and into the kitchen. After she made herself a sandwich for lunch she Apparated to St. Mungo's. It felt good to be back to work. She wasn't cooped up in the house anymore.

"Hello, Mrs. McCarthy," Lily greeted her boss.

Mrs. McCarthy was a small old lady. She had her gray hair tied up in a bun on top of her head. Her gray eyes reminded Lily of Sirius. She peeked up from behind her glasses, which sat on the bridge of her nose, making her cheekbones seem higher than they really were. She came out from behind the counter and led Lily to the first floor, the Creature-Induced Injuries floor.

"You'll be training here today," Mrs. McCarthy explained. "Healer Barge!"

A young blonde haired lady walked over to Mrs. McCarthy and Lily. She had beautiful blue eyes and a stunning completion.

"Yes, Mrs. McCarthy?"

"You'll be training with Lily today," Mrs. McCarthy told her.

"Of course," Healer Barge smiled at Lily.

"I'll leave you two to it then," Mrs. McCarthy turned and walked out of the room.

"Are you ready to start?" Healer Barge inquired.

"Whenever you are, Healer Barge," Lily replied.

"I'll have none of that Healer Barge stuff, it's Marcie," the young girl told her.

"Ok, Marcie," Lily smiled.

"You'll be working with Tim Winkle today," Marcie told her. "Here he is."

Lily turned and saw a young boy lying on a bed. He had blonde hair and he looked pale. He held his arm to his chest and looked like he was trying not to weep. The thing that attracted Lily to him were his eyes. They were hazel.

"You can take care of him and I'll stand back make and make sure everything goes well," Marcie whispered.

Lily nodded. She walked and sat down gently next to the little boy.

"Hi," she said.

"Hello," the boy muttered.

"So what happened to you?" Lily asked politely.

"I. . . .I got bit by a hippogriff," he explained sadly.

"That's not fun. How about we get you fixed up?"

Tim nodded mutely, holding out his arm. Lily pulled the fabric up and looked at the wound. She almost vomited. She never liked looking at wounds, but she loved healing people so she sucked it up. Pulling out the wand, she healed the break in the skin.

"There all better," Lily smiled brightly.

"Oh thank you, Miss!" Tim exclaimed.

"It's no trouble," Lily replied. "Your mum's probably waiting for you outside the ward. You want me to come with you?"

"No thanks," Tim said hopping up. "Thanks again!"

Lily smiled as he ran outside into the arms of a waiting woman.

"You did well," Marcie told her. "I think you're going to do just fine here."

The rest of Lily's day hadn't gone so well. She had to deal with an old man and his wife. The wife kept on complaining that she wasn't doing her job right. Lily had almost lost her patience a couple of times. The man however kept insisting that he didn't need and healing and all he wanted to do was go home. Another man kept hitting on her and would not shut up. She almost slapped him a couple of times.

As Lily came out of the bathroom, she walked to the front of the hospital. She was finally off of work for the day. When she reached the front of St. Mungo's, she got the surprise of her life. There stood Marcie talking to James, who was leaning against the wall. Marcie flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder smiling brightly.

Lily narrowed her eyes and moved forward.

"Hi, Lily," James greeted as soon as he saw her.

"Hi, what are you doing here?" she asked.

"I was just talking to Marcie," James explained. "She was just telling me about how good you were doing."

"Yeah, James here said he came to pick you up," Marcie told her.

"You did?" Lily asked surprised.

"Yep, you ready to go?" James asked.

"Yeah," Lily replied stunned. James had come to pick her up? Why? She had made it clear to him that she wasn't going to get together with him anytime soon.

"The Floo is the other way," Lily told him as he headed for the front door.

"I know, we're going to Apparate," James explained.

"Why? James, are you ok?"

"Yeah, fine," James muttered looking around once they were outside. He turned on the spot taking Lily with him.

"James?" Lily inquired when they reached Potter Manner.

"Sorry, about that. We found that out that a group of Death Eaters may have been stopped in Diagon Alley," James explained.

"They tell you that kind of stuff?" Lily asked astonished.

"Not exactly," James glanced away from Lily.

"You eavesdropped didn't you?" Lily guessed.

James just smirked at her. "Come on, Evans."

Lily rolled her eyes and followed her.

"Do you want a milkshake?" James called over his shoulder walking into the kitchen.

"You going to ask Ginkgo to make them?" Lily teased.

"I make some of the best milkshakes, thank you very much," James shot back.

Lily made her way into the kitchen. "Where are Sirius and Karen? Flat shopping?"

"Yep," James replied as he blended the ice cream and milk.

"Here," James handed her the milkshake. "Hope you like chocolate."

"Thanks," Lily smiled. She took a slip. "Not bad."

"Told ya."

Lily rolled her eyes as James smirked. She got an idea. "You know, this would look better on you."

James looked stunned from a moment. Lily flipped her milkshake out on top of his head and burst out laughing.

"You're going to pay for that, Evans," James whispered darkly.

Lily screamed as he lunged for her. She ran around the counter before James could catch. He quickly followed. Because he legs were so long, James easily caught her. She screamed as his arm wrapped around her waist. Her back bumping against his chest.

"What are you going to do with me?" Lily asked, looking up at him.

"Hmmm, how about this?" He picked his milkshake up and dumped it on top of her head, just as she had to him.

Lily felt like it was the first time she had a good laugh. It had been a while. Here she was covered in chocolate milkshake, in James Potter's arms, laughing her head off. It felt right. Somehow it all felt right.

"Ahem," voice interrupted from the doorway.

Lily and James both turned around to see Sirius leaning against the door frame. "Having fun?"

They both looked at the floor.

"In case you're interested, Karen and I found a place," Sirius told them. "We came back to get our things."

"Right, er. . .I'll help you, mate," James offered.

"No thanks, not until you take a shower," Sirius instructed.

"I better go get this washed off," Lily told both boys. They just nodded.

Lily moved past Sirius and up the stairs feeling better than she had in a long time.
