A/N Dialogue heavy chapter ahead.
Lo slowly chewed her food. She made a loud sound when she swallowed before picking up another piece with her fork and putting it into her mouth.
Drez let out another cough. "Hello. Still here."
Yet another long silence.
"Erm, Lo?" Jennie asked, giving her a light tap.
"I'm thinking." Lo replied, putting her cutlery down and drumming a steady beat on the table with her finger tips.
"But, what's your name?"
"Drez."
"Drez, is here, and he seems to know you, or else he wouldn't be here."
"That's why I'm thinking." Lo half whined.
What were the odds. It made sense that he'd come. The noble was getting married and defying tradition by marrying a commoner. It would be a sign of of good faith. It would make sense for the dwarven ambassador to come as well. Nordberg bought a lot of metal for making weapons. It would be securing a trade agreement. Drez walking into the same place as she was. It was a sign that what ever higher power there was really didn't like her.
"I'm done thinking." Lo finished.
"And?" Jennie asked, tilting her head.
"I've got nothing." She replied, dropping her head.
"So, what's new?" Drez asked, trying to fill the space.
"Erm, not much." Lo said, beginning to stroke her chim. An aura of awkwardness permeated the conversation.
"I see you changed your hair, suits you."
"Thanks." Lo said, twirling a strand idly. "I have no idea how this is going to end." She admitted.
"I think John 'll see me, come over, then see you."
Lo let out a sigh. "Please tell me Tristen's not here as well?"
Drez shook his head. "Went to the library, boy's always had a head for words."
"Well, I suppose it has to be used for something considering he thinks with another part." She chuckled to herself.
"What other part?" Jennie asked, before Kira leaned over and whispered. "Oh."
Lo leant back again. "So, what should the topic of awkward small talk be?"
"How about how you met, and who he is?" Drake asked, raising an eyebrow slightly
"How much do they know about your past?" Drez asked, tilting his head in a way that was emphasised by his beard. He'd been doing some calculations in his own head on his odds of they survival. They ranged from none, to slightly less depending on if there was a patch of ice outside that he could slip on.
"Very little." Kira smirked, resting her hand on her chin. "Almost like she's hiding something."
Lo shot the other woman a venomous look.
"I think I hit a nerve." Kira chuckled.
"It's a long story." Lo said nervously. "You don't need to know."
Drake stopped looking at Lo and instead was staring at a coin, glancing up every now and then with a look of disbelief on his face. "Holy shit."
"What?" Marian asked, happy that the conversation had finally shifted.
"When you said John, you didn't mean." Drake paused before holding up the coin again, making Lo gulp and shrink into her chair again. "You actually did."
"What are you on about?" The wolf-girl demanded, gave him a playful punch to the shoulder.
"It's the bloody prince. She knew the prince." He answered, pointing to John who had started walking towards them, carrying a pair of mugs.
"So Drez, who are our new friends?" He asked, handing the dwarf his drink before taking a sip of his own.
"Not sure. Lo 'asn't told me their names yet?"
Lo swore people were taking turns to freeze up, as John totally stopped moving. She let out a little cough. "Hi."
John was still transfixed, his mind attempting to do what Lo's had done not moments before. "Err, hello."
"Can someone please tell me what's going on?" Marian demanded, punching the table.
Lo took a breath and bit her lip before speaking. "John, this is Drake, Kira, Seb, Marian and Jennie, they're all children of the abominations. Everyone, this is John, my former fiance."
There was a mixture of people saying what, err, um, and swearing.
Jennie slowly put her hand up. "Does that make you a princess?"
"Not that I'm aware of." Lo replied with a slight smirk, while John scratched the back of his neck and gave a short look to Drez.
Jennie still hadn't lowered her hand. "How did, 'this', happen?"
"Yeah." Marian interrupted. "Is this some bullshit fairest in the land sort of deal?"
"No, it's more, last living elf sort of deal." Lo replied, becoming slightly more glum, she tried to avoid thinking of it that way.
"Not exactly." John spoke.
"Okay. Last one that people know of." Lo thought she corrected herself,
"Not exactly." He repeated.
"Pardon?" Lo replied, feeling rather shocked.
"We found other elves, or they found us." John said rapidly.
"This sounds like fun." Kira chuckled again, resulting in Drake giving her a sharp look that made her giggle even more.
Lo's eyes lit up slightly. "What are they like?"
"Enigmatic, condescending, they mostly keep to them selves." John replied slowly.
"Seb, would you try to find them a pair of chairs?" Lo asked, seeming much more interested. Lo avoided thinking about elves, other elves. She was one after all, despite not being raised by them, and the only one she'd met was her mother. Who tried to kill her, for no clear reason. Now she realised why she didn't think about it.
Seb gave nod. He was the ideal person for finding things, and quickly returned with the seats, with the two guests sitting down.
"Before this conversation goes on, I assume we're going to avoid the giant, evil elephant in the dark tower?" Drez asked.
"Can it be called a tower if it's underground?" Jennie asked.
"Yes, we are avoiding it, and it probably can be called that Jen." Lo replied.
"Can I at least have a proper drink?" Drez added.
"Seb?" Lo inquired.
"Fine." He sighed, standing up and heading to the bar.
"Two seconds." Lo said with a smile and leant over to Kira. "Can I speak to you outside?"
She gave a nod before the pair stood up and went outside. "What do you want?" She asked quickly.
"There's something I need you to do for me." Lo began to sigh, but started to count to ten instead.
"Ooo, the former future queen wants me to do her bidding. How may I serve you, your highness?" She jested, giving a mock bow.
"Drez mentioned that Tristen is in the college's library, I'd like you to keep an eye on him."
"And you think I'm most suited to this task why?" Kira asked, tilting her head and giving a smirk.
"Tristan's an asshole who thinks with his, you know what."
"Sword? If he were a boat he'd lead with his mast? His little solider?" Kira said in a sing-song voice.
"Yes, and you'll probably keep his attention." Lo stammered awkwardly.
"And why would that be?" Kira teased again.
"I, imagine that some men might find you, not unattractive." Lo stammered awkwardly.
"And from this I get?" Kira asked.
Four, five, six. Okay better. "In my research, I may have found a source of easy magic for you to 'drink' I could get you a regular supply?" The crystal that came from Anders's arm was actually very close to the liquid in the wasteland. His power was literally converting his arm to solid magic, and the sample she'd been given was doing the same to the air around it.
"Oh, an infinite supply of magic, for distracting someone who can't keep it in their trousers. Normally I do it for fun, but this deal works much better." She chuckled, causing Lo to put a palm to her face.
"The college is the massive tower, it should be open and the library composes most of the western wing. He's got black hair, tanned skin."
"Oh no." Kira said in an innocent voice. "I wandered off from my family and I feel oh so vulnerable, if only someone would help me?"
Eight, nine, ten. "Like that, only less stupid. Actually, he might fall for that." Lo considered.
"See you back at the tower then." Kira replied, giving a slight wave before turning around and leaving. Lo headed back inside with a sigh. Damn it.
Drez sat chuckling to himself, while everyone else looked slightly confused. "You have to be a dwarf to get it." He muttered, upon realising that no one else was laughing.
"So, what did I miss?" She asked, before taking her previous seat.
"Not much." Drake replied. "Just some weird joke."
"That is a good joke, you just need to know more about dwarven culture."
"Why don't you educate me then." Drake replied, grabbing Drez's drink from him and finishing off the mug. "I heard thar dwarves were better at holding their drink then anyone else."
"Is that a challenge?" Drez asked.
"What do you think?"
"Anyway." Lo began, as Seb was ordered to get more drinks by the competitors. "Can you give me any more details on them?"
"Err, anything you want to know in particular?" John asked.
"Have you talked to any of them?" She asked.
"I think I'm gonna find someone else to talk to." Marian huffed, dragging Jennie off by the hand, making Lo feel slightly awkward.
The elf let out, was about to let out to sigh before stopping herself. "Carry on."
"As I said, they keep to themselves, but I've talked to a pair of them, a warrior named Mirah, and their leader, Oberon."
"The hero?" Lo asked, becoming even more interested.
"No, it's just a name, or that's what Mirah said. Though he is their leader.'
"And what's he like?' She placed her hand on her chin.
"Intense. I don't think I've seen him not working."
"It makes sense, his pe, our people aren't exactly in the best situation."
"He was actually interested in meeting you." John replied, giving a light smile. He had to tell her, her just had to find a way to do it, naturally, in a way that wasn't shouting it out.
"It makes sense, he'd want to ask me what the people were like." This could have been the ideal moment, if Lo hadn't carried on talking. "And the other one, Mirah, what's she like."
"A tad more relaxed, but she doesn't exactly like humans. When we were traveling to the wasteland." John spoke, before Lo interrupted him
"Wait. Why did you go to the." She froze mid-sentence, her mind suddenly licking in and making her sit up in her chair. "You sent me there, why would you try to rescue me?" She could feel herself forcing anger into her voice.
John took a deep breath. "It wasn't me, and it wasn't my father. We'd been given a plant that made us more aggressive. I was going there to rescue you. Tristen came as well as Mirah and a paladin."
Lo gave a slight frown and folded her arms. "Drez, is this true?"
"Aye lass, it is true." Drez murmured, lifting what was his thirteenth mug and downing it with one go. By now Drake's head was flat against the table, with this being a victory drink. Lo suddenly began to feel incredibly awkward, Gnarl had not mentioned anything about them, although he did have something to gain, her staying as Overlord. "I think I'll be off now."
"When we arrived, Tristen found you, but the minions took you away before we could rescue you."
And that just cemented Lo's theory. "I'm sorry, for what I just said." She apologised.
"It's okay." John replied, smiling slightly. Screw it, now or never. "I need to tell you something, or bring you to someone to tell you something."
"What?" Lo asked, tilting her head at his sudden outburst.
John took a deep breath. "Do you have any idea who your parents are?"
Lo also took a deep breath. "No." She lied. "I don't like to think about it."
"The elven leader, is an acting regent, and there's no other known heir." John carried on, the awkwardness in his tone incredibly clear.
"And?" Lo asked, feeling concerned, though she could already see where this was going.
"He has red hair, and grey eyes."
"And this is the point where you tell me you he thinks I'm the heir." Lo whined, beginning to count to ten, though John sighed instead.
"Sounds about right."
Lo stopped for a long time. This could be useful. Having a group of allies inside the castle could be useful. NO, that's not why you're here, John has been nice to you and not berated you for joining the Overlord, and is avoiding even mentioning what is going on so you can have a nice evening, show him some courtesy. "I'd like you to arrange a meeting with him." She announced. "Tell him to go to the north-western wind of the college, there's a balcony overlooking the sea. That is where I shall meet him."
"I'll see you there." John replied, as the pair stood up.
"Till then." She said, giving his hand a light squeeze before parting ways.
A/N Thanks for reading. Just informing people that I have a story on fiction press, so if they want to check that out they can (, there's link to my FP profile on my profile page), and I've finished my exams now so chapters should be going up more quickly.
