Ghosts
His heart was racing, his breath got stuck in his throat, goosebumps embellished his arms and he was pretty sure that if he had hair, it would stand up straight in his neck. He heard some distant sounds and he knew something was about to happen. His muscles tensed, and he subconsciously tried to blend in more with his environment. At that moment there was a large scream and his own girly scream followed soon, clutching the pillow in front of his chest.
"Dude, this movie is intense," he breathed, swallowing hard. An excited smile crept up his face, but fell as soon as the movie music swell out.
Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder, and another girly scream followed. Quickly he turned around, ready for anything.
"Relax, Mikey. It's just me!" Don held his hands up defensively. Mike breathed out hard and then threw his pillow at his brother. "Don't do that!"
"Sorry, bro," Don said smiling, giving back the pillow. "But I heard you scream."
Mike sniggered a little embarrassed. "Heh, sorry. I guess I was in the middle of the movie."
Both of them whipped their heads up when they heard rapid footsteps coming into the living room. "Everything alri-" Quickly Leo's voice trailed off, and he was visibly relaxing when he saw that everything was alright. His head shot to the tv and a smile came across his face. "Ah, Mikey's watching scary movies again?"
"Yeah, and a good one too!" Mike said excitedly. Leo shook his head. "Great, but I won't be the one come running when you have nightmares tonight."
"Pfft." Mike waved the comment away. "Getting scared every once in a while is pretty healthy. You should try it."
Leo frowned. "Don't worry. I get scared every now and than. But getting scared because of a fictional B-rated ghost-movie?" He saw Mike nod and scoffed. "I'll never be scared of a movie, because it's impossible this could happen. These things aren't even real." He motioned at the tv, where the main character was now trying to hide behind a shower curtain from some sort of poltergeist.
"Dude," Mike began and he shifted so he sat up a little straighter. "This movie is based on a true story!"
"Yeah, right. More likely based on a story some person with way too much fantasy once told. Don't believe everything you read, Mikey."
"But it could totally happen! Remember this movie where -"
"Mikey… It's a movie, not a legalized documentary. It's not real," Leo cut him off.
"But -"
"Not real."
Mike opened his mouth to say something.
"Not real, bro," Leo said softly. He gave a smile and watched Mikey who got an unsatisfied pout on his face. He turned his head when he heard Don chuckle softly.
"What? You're siding with him?" Mike said, crossing his arms. Don brought his hand up to his face. "Well, I'm divided." Both of his brothers looked up to him expectantly, while Don rubbed his chin. "First of all, there is absolutely no scientific proof for any ghost-related topics…"
Mike felt his oldest brother smirking in his direction, which he chose to igore.
"...But on the other hand we had our own weird personal experiences. We've fought aliens, battled robots, a guy who could mind-control rats, spiritual mystics and so on. So I guess there is a good possibility for ghosts and poltergeists to exist," finished Don matter-of-factly. This time it was Mikey's turn to smirk as he looked at Leo, who was watching Don doubtfully. Then he shrugged. "Fair enough." He gave a crooked smile. "Believe what you want, but ghosts… I don't buy it."
"Believe what you want, but ghosts could be real," Mike shot back while Leo turned around. "Whatever, Mikey. Just show me a ghost and I might believe you," he said as he walked away the same direction he came from. "Don't get nightmares."
"Well… You don't get nightmares!" Mikey called, realising too late how lame it was. He waited a couple of seconds before leaning back in the cushions with an annoyed sigh, followed by a sulky pout. Don noticed it. "Relax, Mikey. You know Leo wants to see things first before believing it. He learned that the hard way," he tried to make his brother feel better.
"Yeah, I know. But now I missed the best part of the movie!" Mike whined while waving his hands dramatically at the screen.
"Although I kinda agree with you on ghost subjects, I don't think this movie has so called 'best parts'," he said jokingly while looking doubtfully at the movie. When he didn't get a response he turned his head to Mikey, whose attention was fully directed at the tv again. Don chuckled and started to walk away too. "Have fun, Mikey," he greeted, knowing his brother wouldn't hear him.
