Comfort

Shifting a bit he couldn't keep back an agonising moan and he laid his head deeper into his soft pillows. He wished one of his brothers would come over to comfort him, but he had understood in his half-awake state they had to take off for a little while. Leo had put his hand on his shoulder telling him they would be back soon. Don didn't even remember if he answered or not - he just knew he felt kinda unhappy when Leo had walked away. After that he probably blacked out, because he hadn't heard the lair's door close.

Suddenly he felt a soft hand on his forehead and he let out a content sigh. That felt so good. Curiously he opened his eyes a bit to see where the sensation came from. Through the explosions behind his eyes he noticed a reddish blob.

"Hey Donnie, are you awake?" a familiar voice asked. Don squinted his eyes, trying to figure out who the voice belonged to. He heard some shifting next to him and another hand landed on his chest. "Don?"

Finally his brain caught up to his senses and he opened his eyes again, a little further this time. "Ape - ril?" he croaked. Quickly he swallowed because of the pain it gave his throat. Realising his mistake too late, he started to cough. He felt the harsh, dry hacks well up in his chest, exiting his mouth with eruptions of pain. Immediately he felt himself being lift up a bit and a comforting hand patted gently on his shell. "Easy, Donnie. Small breaths. You're gonna be okay."

After a long twenty seconds the cough subdued and exhausted Don sank back into the pillows. Panting hard he let his head fall to the side, meeting April's worried eyes for the first time. He wanted to open his mouth to thank her, but she shushed him by putting a hand on his chest again. "Don't talk too much, honey. It will only irritate your throat." She gave him a small smile when he didn't argue. For a little while she sat with him, seeing his pained face. She gave a small sigh as she gently rubbed his good shoulder. "Where does it hurts the most, Donnie?"

Taking a few seconds to process the question, Don opened his eyes, but shut them real quickly when his head seem to burst. "... m'head," he breathed. With a worried face April shushed him again and got up from her crouched position. "Don't move, Donnie. I'll be right back." Giving his cheek a gentle stroke, she left. Don groaned softly as the hand left his face. He liked the touch. It didn't relieve the pain in his head, but it gave him comfort nevertheless. Trying to get comfortable, he tried to use all of his lessons in meditation to clear his head, hoping to fall asleep again. Suddenly he heard some movement next to him and something damp and really cold touched his radiating forehead. He lightly gasped out of surprise, but then sighed contently.

"Sorry, sweety. I didn't mean to startle you," April said softly as she ran the wet cloth gently over his head and face. "I hope this will help a little."

Don swallowed hard and opened his eyes a bit. "T'anks, 'Pril," he slurred as he moved his head to look at her. She gave him a warm smile. "What did I just told you? Don't talk," she scolded him kindly. Don managed to get a small grin on his face. "S'rry." Immediately he closed his eyes tightly when a sharp pain shot through his skull.

"Oh, Donnie," April sighed sympathetically. She knew Don wasn't the one who gave in fast to any kind of sickness, and it hurt her to see her friend like this. "I'm so sorry."

When Don didn't gave a response, she sighed. She wished she could do more, but nothing they had in the lair worked well against this type of infection. Don had to fight through it himself. All she could do was to make his pain bearable. She sighed again and run her hand over his radiating forehead. "Are you hungry, Donnie?" She waited a few seconds and right when she wanted to repeat the question, Don gave a negative grunt. She gave a compassionate smile, despite the situation. "Something to drink than?"

Now Don opened his eyes a bit and he gave a small nod.

"That's good," April said relieved and she rose to her feet. "Come on, you need to sit up a little straighter, otherwise we'll make a mess."

Again Don gave a grunt, but tried to help April as good as he could when she helped him into a sitting position. The moment Don was sitting up straight, his light-headedness struck down full force and he almost collapsed where he sat. Luckily April caught him and she held him tight against her as to protect him from any harm. "It's okay, Donnie. Just take it slow," she comforted him gently as she laid her cheek against the top of his head. "Just tell me when you're ready."

For a full minute they sat, while April talked softly to him. When Donnie started to move a bit, she let out a grateful breath and she reached for the glass of water on the side table. "Come, I'll help you."

With much effort Don managed to lift his head and let April put the glass on his lips, not trying to think about the baby treatment he got which he hated. After a few sips he was spent and slowly he tried to sink back into the pillows. Quickly April put down the glass and supported him where she could. "That's it, hon."

The moment Don's head hit the soft pillow, he let out a satisfied breath. "T'nks," he mumbled, right before falling into a deep and restless slumber.

With a sigh Leo sat down in the armchair Splinter mostly used. He leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees and started to rub his temples. It was an extremely long night and he was exhausted. The moment they had stopped the Purple Dragons from shipping a big load of weapons to the other side of the world, they went home immediately to check up on their sick brother. Leo had hoped Don would feel a little better, but when they got to the lair, Don even looked worse in his opinion, although his temperature didn't raise or anything. April had told him Don managed to drink something and after that he had fallen asleep, which was hours ago. Leo knew the genius needed his rest, but seeing the hurt and uneasy look on his brother's face, he wished Don would wake up so he could comfort him or give him some strong painkillers to relieve his pain.

"You're okay?"

Leo looked up to his youngest brother, who sat cross-legged on the floor against the couch Don was on, eying him closely. Leo gave a slight grin to mask his uneasiness. "Yeah, just tired."

Mikey gave a chuckle, although not really convinced. "I can imagine. It's been a shell of a night." To put a little more strength behind his words, he stretched his back. "If you want to you can go to sleep. I'll watch Donnie."

Immediately Leo shook his head. "No, I'll stay. I've said I'll be there when he wakes up, so that's what I do," he said, looking at his sleeping brother again.

"Aw, that's sweet. You're a softie, you know that," Mikey answered jokingly before laying his head back lazily on the covers Don was buried under.

"Who is?" a new voice asked. Leo looked up, seeing Raph coming from the kitchen with an icepack on his elbow. Mikey just gave a grin and pointed to his brother. "Our leader-bro, of course."

"Heh, I should've known."

Leo gave him a nod, ignoring the comment. "How's your arm doing?"

Raph shrugged nonchalantly. "I can't stretch it, but 't will be fine."

Leo wanted to stand up to check up on him, but Raph was faster and pushed him roughly back in his seat. "Sit," he demanded, before sitting down himself on the other, somewhat smaller couch. Slightly amused and actually rather grateful, Leo let it go and leaned back in his chair, enjoying the silence that followed. Rather quickly his eyes fell shut and he allowed himself a little bit of rest, making sure not to fall asleep.

Suddenly he heard some movement and he opened his eyes, only to see Don twisting and turning on the couch, sweating heavily. He saw Mike was already scrambling to his feet to check up on their sick brother, who softly started to murmur incoherently.

"Donnie?" Mikey asked kind of lost, not quite sure what to do. Almost immediately Leo was next to him and noticed the fear in Mikey's voice. "Relax, Mike. He's just having a nightmare," he reassured him as he laid his hands on Don's good shoulder, shaking him gently. "Donnie... Wake up, bro."

When his brother didn't react, he shook him harder. "Donnie!"

It took a full minute until Don finally started to calm down and his body to relax in Leo's hold. Relieved Leo breathed out and ran his hand over Don's hot cheek. "Hey buddy, are you awake?"

A small moan escaped Don as he struggled to open his eyes. After some very long seconds two amber eyes opened, visibly confused and shaken up. "Le-o? M'ke? But y'were…I jus'- Where's Raph?" he slurred hoarsely as his eyes darted around the room in panic, not really knowing what was going on.

"It's okay, Donnie," Leo tried to comfort him, knowing it had to be a hell of a nightmare. Ever since his fever had gone up, Don was plagued by nightmares and silently Leo cursed this damn infection. "We're here." Although he kept his eyes on a very anxious Don, he felt Raph walking towards the couch to join them, much to his relieve. The moment Raph entered Don's line of sight, the fear in his eyes faded away and slowly he started to relax.

"Calm down, bro. We're all 'ere," Raph said quickly with a reassuring half-grin as soon as Don's eyes were fixed on him.

"Yeah, and were not going anywhere," Mikey chimed in with one of his trademark smiles, even though a bit forced because he was worried. Satisfied Don gave a small nod as his eyes fell shut again. Quickly Leo shook his shoulder again to get his attention. "Donnie? Can I get you anything? Water? Something to eat? Painkillers?"

With a negative grunt Don moved his head to the side, since a full shake was too much effort. "Nuh."

"But you've gotta -"

"I'm f'ne," Don mumbled back and he made himself comfortable again on the pillows. "Jus' stay 'ere." He breathed out tiredly. "Pl'se."

"Course, bro. Jus' take it easy," Raph answered, right before Don's breathing evened out and he had fallen asleep again. For some time it was quiet.

"Man, I really hope he'll feel better soon," Mikey broke the awkward silence, his eyes still on Don. Leo gave a reluctant nod. "Don't worry. He will."

"Well, duh. It's Donnie we're talkin' 'bout. In a week he's up an' runnin'," Raph added before turning back to the couch he was on. "Fer now he jus' has ta sleep it off."

"Indeed," Leo smiled. "Let's just give him everything he needs."

Not having much to say after that the other two brothers also went back to their spot and sat down, waiting patiently as they all watched over their brother and each other.

"Yo, Don!" Raph called as he walked into the lab with his typical heavy footsteps. Slightly startled Don looked up from his project and smiled when his brother came in. "Hey, bro," he greeted, still a bit hoarse.

"How're ya doin'?" Raph asked casually as he put down his hands on the desk Don was working on, leaning forward. Giving it a thought, Don shrugged. "I'm fine actually. The headache is almost gone now, I can move my shoulder without too much pain and I can finally work a bit," he listed with a smile. "So all in all I can't complain."

Raph eyed him closely, but accepted the explanation. "Glad yer feelin' betta. But jus' take it slow, bro." Just four days ago Don's was still sleeping the days away, accompanied by a very persistent fever. Yesterday was the first day Don was up for a longer period, although he wasn't feeling the greatest. Today seemed like a whole new start.

"I will, don't worry," Don said and he took his screwdriver again. Right before he wanted to loosen a screw on his project, Raph took the whole mechanical do-hickey out of his hands.

"Hey! What's the deal?" Don exclaimed hoarsely, getting a slight betrayed expression on his face.

"It's time fer a break, genius. Lunch is almost ready."

Don reached for his project. "Just start without me. I'll be right there."

"Donnie," Raph started threateningly, moving the device out of his brother's reach. Looking up to his big brother, Don gave a pout. "Oh come on! Just a few minutes. I'm almost finished."

Raph crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Don. "Move yer shell before I make ya."

"But -"

"Now, Don. Or I'll break yer toy-thingy."

Don let his shoulders slump as a sign he gave up. "You're mean."

"I know. Now move it, Brainiac," Raph said with a grin as he watched Don walk towards the door. Carefully he put back Don's project on the desk and followed his brother.

In the doorway Don stopped and looked at Raph with a slight embarrassed expression. "I didn't mean that. I know you just care."

Giving his younger brother a playful rub over the head, Raph grinned. "We all do. And ya betta remember that." Avoiding some touchy-feeling conversation, Raph walked past him, leading the way to the kitchen. Watching his brother's back, Don gave a nod. "I will. Always," he said quietly, feeling blessed he had brothers who always cared.
