Disclaimer:You know
10. Tone
So the tone of the story is kind of how the sentences...feel, and the style of the sentences. Okay, okay, tones are not a real thing, I just made it up, but it sounds professional. It's there, I just simply gave it a name. I have no idea how to describe it, so I made a short list(as always) of the top "Tones" I see.
1. The Formal Tone
The formal tone, the old tone, the fancy tone, whatever. It characteristically has no contractions whatsoever and has abnormally long words that come with a good vocabulary. Unfortunately, in using the fancy vocab, authors often misspell or misuse them, so be careful and don't write a long word that you don't understand just for a fancier sounding story.
Formal tones kind of sound like, "Annabeth was not allowed to go to the ball. Not now, not ever, according to her horrid stepmother. All she wanted was to once again rest her eyes upon the face of the beloved prince Percy."
Something fancy and formal. Be careful when you use this though. Just because the story is about princesses does not mean it has to sound formal. Only their speech does, not the whole story. Also, don't use it too much in action fanfictions. Usually you would use this speech in an angsty/deep/sad/touching/romantic story.
2. The Talking-to-you tone
Its the tone I'm using right now, simply. Point of view tone. Portrays the character's inner thoughts and real personality. Uses the words "I" and "me".
3. The You're-Talking- to-me tone
These are the stories that feature "you" as an OC. The "You walk through the border to Camp, greeted by your friends" Features "You" and "Your"
4. The normal tone
This tone is generally third person, stating facts and commentary as well as what they did, etc. Just...normal.
What NOT to do
1. OMG CAPS LOCK ALL LETTERS IT GETS REALLY ANNOYING
2. tlk in txting language like omgs
3. Use abbreviations(did I say that before?)
4. No slang or street talk or whatever like, "yo, dude percy just did this"
5. Unless the character is saying those
Oh, and lastly, make sure that the tone of the story stays constant throughout the entire story.
I know, I know. Chapters are shorter and shorter. I'm sorry guys, I'm out of ideas. Comment some ideas or just feedback and maybe, just maybe, I'll write a few new chapters. And don't forget, I'm always available if you want me to read a fanfic of yours and help/edit!
