76: Beeps and Waves
(few moments earlier)
Ryder sat alone in the room. A full week and four days. Why was it taking her so long to wake up? Doesn't she hear him? Finn? The doctors? He sang to her, played music, told her fun stories, kissed her cheeks and her warm lips a few times and nothing worked. Why wasn't she waking up?
"Please Marley. You have to wake up. Now." Ryder pleaded. "Please, you're scaring me."
Visiting hours were over in an hour. Ryder would have to leave for the night, again, and wait back at the apartment where the rest of the New York gang was and Finn. Summer was coming to an end and Ryder would have to go back to Lima soon, leaving Marley alone here in the coma.
If they kept her alive in the coma, that is.
"Please wake up. Please. You have to wake up now Marley. I'm scared." Ryder's voice shook. "There's a high, high chance of you being placed on life support and if you're on that list for a long, long time than there's a chance that they'll pull the plug on you. Marley please wake up now. Please."
Nothing.
"Marley Jane Rose, wake up now please. I'm not angry with you about smoking bad things or drugs or drinking a lot. Or the wild sex you had with random people, Lark told me that." Ryder said as he held her hand in his own. "I'm not mad at that the most. I know that you thought we were broken up for good. I know that Bree managed to sneak into my room when I was sleeping and took those pictures and did a lot of other hacking things on my phone—she's a smart hacker. And from those you were convinced even more that we were broken up. But I never saw us broken up Marley. We were never broken up, in my own mind, and I know deeply inside that you know the same thing. That we are meant to be together, no matter what. And when you wake up and you still decided that you don't want to be with me; and go on to be with whomever you want to that's fine. Because I'll always love you Marley, no matter what."
Ryder leaned in and kissed her cheek one more time. The second he pressed her cheek, her heart monitor—that kept a rhythm since they hooked her up—the pulse wave changed/beeped differently for a minute. Ryder pulled back and looked at it, though it went back to how is has been for the past week and four days. He looked back at her. "Marley, can you hear me?" Ryder leaned in again and kissed her cheek. Nothing. He tried it again, kissing her cheek.
Then again.
Then again.
And a final time, but on her lips this time.
Nothing changed. Ryder was confused. Was she not just hearing him a moment again? How was he not hearing her? Didn't she just hear him?
Another beep. Ryder looked. Another beep. The beeping on the machine was changing and the heart monitor waves on the screen showed the rhythm of her heart beats changing. Another beep...then another...and another...and another. Maybe she was waking up.
No, nothing. Just louder beeping and her heart waves/beats going faster—Oh shit.
"No!" Ryder yelled. He knew where this was going...where she was going. "No! Marley!" He began to shake her a bit roughly. "Marley! Marley! No! Back away from the light! Don't go to the light!"
BEEP!...BEEP!...BEEP!
"Damn it Marley!" Ryder yelled, shaking her a bit more roughly. "Marley Jane Rose! Stay the fuck away from that fucking light! Fuck the warmth it gives you!"
BEEP...BEEP...BEEP...BEEP
"Marley Rose! Get away from that fucking light! Wake up!"
BEEP..BEEP..BEEP..BEEP...BEEP..BEEP
"Marley!"
BEEP..BEEP..BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
"No!" Ryder yelled, looking at her heart line and it started to go flat just as the beeping went flat. He looked at her rapidly. "Stay with me!"
Ryder leaned in and pressed his lips onto Marley's lips, deeply and passionately than ever before.
Happy Passover and Happy Easter!
