Here's Chapter 4 already! It's a short one, but I'm having fun with this story again. Once again, I don't own any of the characters in the story, I'm just using them for my own enjoyment. No profit is had, darn it. Thanks!

Chapter 4-Help from Old Friends

With no other way to help Shawn, Carlton decided to call in help from the mutant end of things. One moment he was escorting the Winchesters home again, and the next he was appearing in the office of Charles Xavier, interrupting one of his advanced physics classes. Several of the kids jumped back at his arrival, but Professor X held up a hand. "He isn't a threat, children. He's just rude to teleport in without calling first." The bald man chastised lightly. Carlton smiled sheepishly. "I apologize for the intrusion, Professor. I was hoping you could help me with one of your former students."

"I am aware of Mr. Spencer's situation, Detective. We'll resume class tomorrow, children. For homework tonight…"

The kids groaned collectively, like any bored students, and he silenced them with a raised hand. "Your homework is to research the link between the supernatural beliefs of the world and their possible correlation to the mutant world you live in. You may be surprised how similar they are." He hinted. Carlton shifted uncomfortably, knowing they'd seen the flames when he arrived. If he stuck around much longer, he was going to be helping with homework. The students left the class and Professor X gestured to a seat, which Carlton took. "Again, I apologize for the intrusion, but I'm worried about Shawn. His powers are erratic. Angry. I can't fathom where all the anger is coming from."

Professor X's brow wrinkled. "Can't you, Detective Lassiter? Did you not consider that your strengthening bond might be the source of his anger? He is linked to you on a metaphysical level, and you have a lot of anger in your soul. Your father committed the first murder in the Christian faith. He did it to save his brother's soul, but that act helped him become Lucifer's first knight. All of his progeny have the fury of Cain in them."

"I use it to fight evil." Carlton argued.

"Yes, and that is commendable. But you also slay demons every chance you get, to keep them for overrunning the planet. You have a violent soul, and he is going to continue to tap into it. You have to teach him how to focus that anger into his growing powers, or his nuclear core will go critical."

Carlton ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Why are his powers growing? He's a grown man! Puberty is over."

Xavier spread his hands. "We are mutations by our very nature, Detective. We evolve continually. There are things I can do now that I couldn't when I was Mr. Spencer's age. If I wanted to, I could control every human or mutant mind on this planet at once. I have, in fact, and I regret it. Help Mr. Spencer so he doesn't have things he regrets." He paused a moment, his eyes going distant, and then said, "It may be prudent to lead the senior Mr. Spencer and Mr. Guster to believe that you are also a mutant. Vampires are quite enough for them to deal with, I should think."

Carlton leaned back in his seat tiredly. "That is the plan. But how am I supposed to teach Shawn to control his anger when I kill to control it?"

"That isn't controlling, Detective Lassiter. That's feeding the flame. You have lived as your father's son, forgetting the lessons your mother taught you. Kindness. Generosity of heart. Gratitude. Turning the other cheek, to put it biblically."

"You want me to kill my enemies with kindness?" Carlton scoffed.

"Why are they your enemies?" Professor X retorted. "You are the product of a union between a demon and a human, and you chose your side early in life. You could have gone the other way. Even if you are killing the demons your father creates, you are still honoring your father by killing. Try honoring your mother for once, and see how that works out."

Carlton shook his head. "I've been killing demons for more than a century, Professor Xavier. That isn't a habit I can easily quit, or that will let me quit. I have made a reputation for myself as my uncle's avenger."

"Why?"

Carlton blinked at him. "My father killed my uncle to satisfy Lucifer's petty deal. I cannot truly believe that he was innately evil. Lucifer had his ear from the beginning, dripping poison into it, turning my uncle dark. I swore to make Lucifer pay by thwarting him at every turn. He does not have an army because I have slain his armies. I am fighting for the side of good. For the side of heaven, even if my soul is damned."

Professor X contemplated this for a few moments and then said gently, "Could you not add souls to heaven's roster without the bloodshed? Save children who are going down the wrong path? Teach forgiveness instead of revenge? In that way, you are also taking souls from Lucifer."

Carlton breathed a long, heavy sigh. "For Shawn's sake, I can try."

"That is all we can ever do." Professor X agreed sagely, piloting his wheelchair around thei desk. The door opened behind them and a blue furred man in glasses with feline features appeared. "You called, Professor?" He asked, glancing curiously at the guest. The professor nodded. "I believe our former student Shawn Spencer is going through some unexpected changes with his mutation, and needs your medical expertise. Will you accompany us to Santa Barbara for an exam? I see you already have your kit."

"You did ask me to bring it." Hank McCoy said jovially. "I'm happy to help. How are we getting there? The X-Jet is being upgraded."

Carlton offered a hand. "I will take you. Detective Carlton Lassiter." He introduced himself, reaching down to grip the professor's shoulder as Hank took his hand. "Dr. Henry McCoy. Hank." He replied, and then the flames swept them away.
