Chapter Thirty-Nine:

"He has Stage II AIDS related Lymphoma," Mark said as he sat on the bench in the hall with Robin.

"Okay, so we need to fight that. It can be treated," she took his hand and squeezed it.

Mark nodded and wiped his face.

"I know, but he's my little boy and he doesn't deserve this," he took a deep breath and exhaled. "I need to go back in there, but he's going to know it's bad. I have to calm down."

Robin nodded.

"How about I go sit with him for a little while so you can get some air? I won't leave him until you come back."

He looked at her and she moved to hug him.

"I'm so sorry, but you can't lose hope. I think we can fight this."

Mark hugged her and nodded, walking away while Robin went into the room.

Patrick looked at Sabrina and shook his head.

"What are you still doing here?"

"Excuse me? I thought you were upset and I was trying to help you."

"No, I mean in the hospital. You don't work here anymore, do you?"

"Actually, I was rehired. I work in pediatrics now and I have been picking up extra hours in the AIDS wing. I thought you and I could talk about the Nurses ball again."

"That's not happening. You need to stay away from me and you better stay away from Aaron and Mark."

Sabrina sighed.

"I don't want to cause any trouble. I was upset because of Gabriel, but I've learned that I need to move forward with my life in order to heal. I hope we can be friends," she touched his arm and he felt repulsed. It made him incredibly happy.

"No!" he grinned. "I can't be friendly with you. I can't overlook how horrible you were to Robin and how you hurt Emma by taking your anger out on her."

Sabrina was confused.

"Why are you so happy about this?"

He grabbed his lab coat and smiled.

"Because the old Patrick would have reacted differently. He would have gone with you and done something stupid that meant nothing. But I've changed. I know what I want, and it isn't you. It isn't Sam. It's Robin. It's always been Robin," he said and walked out.

Robin sat down and smiled at Aaron. She took his hand and he opened his eyes.

"Hi Dr. Robin," he said softly.

"Hey Aaron. How are you doing?"

"I'm okay, just tired. Where did my dad go?"

"He went to get a drink and a bite to eat. I told him I would keep you company until he came back. It won't be long. Is it okay I'm here?"

Aaron smiled.

"Sure. You're like me, so I'm glad you're here. I have some questions I hoped maybe you could answer."

Robin nodded.

"If I can answer, I will."

"Is it going to hurt when I die?"

"What? You aren't going to die, Aaron. We are going to fix you up and you'll be okay."

"I don't think so. Daddy is really worried and I am having trouble seeing things really well. I know what that means and I know there is something wrong with my brain. I think I'm going to die."

Robin felt her eyes fill with tears and she sighed.

"I know you're scared and that's okay. What you need to remember is that fears aren't reality. The things we make up in our minds are always worse than the reality. You can choose to give into that fear, or you can fight it. I think you can fight it."

"But I don't know how. I don't know of a doctor that can fix what's wrong. Daddy thought there would be one here but he hasn't found one."

Robin smiled.

"I know of one. I know the best brain doctor there is and if anyone can help you, he can. He also hates to lose."

Mark walked in and smiled at how animated Aaron was with Robin.

"Hi dad! Dr. Robin knows a doctor that might help us. You don't have to be so sad anymore."

Robin stood up and smiled at him.

"I'm going to talk to Patrick. I want him to look at the scans and see what he thinks. Is that okay?"

Mark shrugged.

"If he can help my son, I'd owe him the world."

Robin nodded.

"I'll talk to him and I know he will come by and see you."

She waved goodbye and walked out.

Robin called Patrick's phone and left a message that she wanted to talk to him. She told him she was headed to his office and she he would be open to helping. She knew he would but she didn't know if there was anything he could do.

She stopped when she saw Sabrina coming out of Patrick's office and she sighed. She had no energy for a fight.

"Excuse me, is Patrick inside?"

Sabrina turned to look at her.

"Lost him again? Already?"

Robin ignored her attempt at bait.

"It's important. Excuse me," she said and walked past her to the door, knocking on it.

"He's not there. He was tired after we had a quickie and he was going home."

Robin grinned as she looked at her.

"Nice try. First of all, I don't care who Patrick sleeps with, but I do know it wasn't you because he has standards. You hurt Emma and that is a game changer. Go take your delusions somewhere else."

Sabrina turned and saw someone she knew would make a difference.

"Robin, have you met the chief of staff?"

Robin turned around and froze.

Dr Obrecht stared at her and Robin began to panic.

"How did you get here? How did you get away from her?" Obrecht said.

"No, please," Robin said and turned to run.

Obrecht was already on the phone, no doubt calling Helena. Sabrina smirked and made her way to pediatrics.

Robin rushed to the stairwell and tried it, but the door was locked. She was panicking and turned to run when she felt arms around her.

"NO!" she screamed and saw it was Jason.

"Robin? Hey, it's okay," he said and she fell into his arms.

"Helena. She is coming for me. Obrecht called her and she's going to get to me. I need to go."

Jason held her and he felt his own heart race at the idea Helena was around. He looked around and moved Robin to the corner of the hall and to a bench.

"It's okay," he said. "We're going to end this."

"No, you don't understand. That woman tortured me for years. She gave me shock treatments that almost killed me. If she is here and working, then she has control over everyone. We aren't safe, Jason."

"She's working here?"

Robin was trying to calm herself down and she looked at him.

"She's the chief of staff."

Jason couldn't believe it.

"There's no way she's the chief."

"When I was back for a few weeks before I left to help you, she was appointed chief. I remember being so furious and Patrick wanted to quit but she held his contract over his head. I refused to work one second under that psycho. I was so messed up, you know? I don't think I even remembered it all until I just saw her," she wiped her eyes and looked at Jason.

"I wonder what else I don't remember?"

Jason sat down and held her hand.

"I'm going to fix this. I promise, I will figure out a way to get rid of her."

Robin was about to respond when suddenly they were overcome by three men. One smashed Jason over the back of the head and knocked him out and the other held something over Robin's mouth until she passed out.

XXXX

Patrick knocked on the door and waited. He knocked over and over and finally Sam opened.

"What is your problem? I was coming?"

Patrick walked in and stared at her.

"Robin is missing. She was supposed to meet me at my office and she never showed. Is Jason here?"

"What? Why would Jason know where she was?" Sam crossed her arms and Patrick sighed.

"She was here earlier. What did you tell her?"

Sam walked to her door and opened it.

"Get out. I am not here to be your punching bag when Robin pisses you off. I can also tell you that if Jason was with her, she's fine."

Patrick rolled his eyes.

"Because Jason is the amazing protector? Because the thug who she lost years of her life for is better than the man who loved her more than anything?"

Sam closed her door and laughed.

"Loved her more than anything? Really? The man who tried to get me into bed the minute you decided to divorce her because your feelings were hurt? How about when you conveniently kept the fact from me that she left to save my husband? Were you thinking of the woman you loved more than life itself then? Shit, Patrick, a year ago you were at the alter with a different woman who wasn't Robin or me. Don't stand here and pontificate about how amazing you are and how deeply you loved Robin. You are the thug. You are the player. Now get out of my house."

Patrick was stunned and ashamed. He went to respond when both of their phones went off.

"We have Robin and Jason. We'll be in touch."

Patrick and Sam looked at each other and both felt the same sense of despair.

Who were they dealing with?
