Chapter Fifty-Nine:
Robin was cold and tired and scared. Every noise she heard through the night was a potential threat and her scissors didn't seem like an adequate weapon.
Patrick hadn't been awake, but his breathing was steady and his vitals seemed okay, as much as she could tell.
The light came into the cabin and Robin knew she had to get help. The trouble was that she didn't know what dangers were out there.
There was another noise and she saw Patrick move a little.
"Patrick?" she moved to stroke his cheek.
His brown eyes blinked and looked at her.
"Did we make it through the night?" he smiled.
She chuckled.
"We sure did. I'm going to get us out of here really soon."
"How?" he tried to move a little and sucked in his breath.
She helped him and sighed.
"I'm still working on that one."
They both heard a noise that sounded like footsteps and she grabbed her scissors, shielding him.
"Robin, don't move," he said and held her free hand. "Don't do anything stupid."
She ignored him and went to the door.
"Robin! No!" he cried out when she went outside.
Patrick began to panic and he tried to move, but his body was on fire. He felt like a complete failure and when the doors opened, he froze.
"Patrick?" Sam ran in and looked at him, taking his hand.
"Sam? Where is Robin? How are you here?"
Robin walked in with Anna and Mac and Jason and Robin felt a sting when she saw Sam with Patrick.
"We are going to get you out of here," Sam said and Patrick moved away from her.
"Robin? I need you," he said.
Robin walked over and Sam moved away.
"They found us, so we're going to be okay. I was just trying to figure out where we can go that's safe. Obrecht has people everywhere and she is out there, too."
"I'm worried about you. You haven't slept or eaten and you look like you're going to fall over."
She smiled and Anna walked over.
"We are going to head to Mercy for a scan and for them to administer whatever treatment you need. We will then set you both up in a safe house for the time being. Liz still has Emma, but Mac will get her and keep her for now."
"Mercy? Is that safe?" Robin asked.
"I have a doctor from GH coming over to help and we can trust the people I have there. Nobody will know where the safe house it. Your father and I have used it many times."
Jason looked at Robin and he sighed.
"You need to be checked out, too. Are you getting dizzy?"
Patrick looked at her and wondered if he missed anything.
"I'm fine. All of you can stop worrying. Can we please go?"
Anna and Mac nodded and Jason and Mac put Patrick onto a stretcher and took him out to the van. Sam went to help Robin, but she shrugged her off. She just wanted some space.
"Please let me know what I can do to help you," Anna said as she picked up Robin's bag.
Robin smiled a tiny smile and nodded.
"Thank you for finding us."
Anna smiled and they walked out.

Almost four hours later, Patrick and Robin were waiting to leave Mercy. Patrick had a few broken ribs and a concussion, a sprained wrist and torn ligaments in his knee. He had stitches in his ankles from where the wire had cut into him and although sore, everything should heal.
Robin had blood work taken and she got her meds filled before they were ready to go. She was sitting in a chair while Patrick sat on the side of the bed. Both wore scrubs. They hadn't said much of anything and Patrick was worried about her.
"I don't know why you can't tell us where you're going," Jason said as he and Sam walked in. "It's not like I would ever betray you."
Robin wiped her eyes and nodded.
"I know that, but after all that's happened, I think it's time for us to head our separate ways. You and Sam are rebuilding your lives and I don't want to interfere any more."
Patrick smiled at Robin and Sam walked to him, touching his arm.
"What about me? You don't trust me to help?"
Robin stood up and wobbled, but Jason held onto her.
"I'm okay. Excuse me," she said and walked out. She didn't have it in her to listen to Patrick and Sam talk. She just had nothing left.
Patrick moved Sam away so he could see Robin.
"Is she okay? I know she needs rest and this has been awful for her. Can you please ask her to come back?"
"Patrick?" Sam said, but he ignored her.
Jason walked to her and sighed.
"Robin is right. Let's leave them alone."
Sam looked at Patrick and could see he only had eyes for Robin. He was desperate to see her.
She nodded and they walked out.
About an hour later, Anna drove them to the safe house. It was a beautiful log cabin in the middle of a thick forest. It was impossible to know there was anything built in the mess of trees, but once they pulled up, it was stunning.
Mac greeted them at the door and came out to help Patrick walk in. Anna grabbed their bags and Robin walked inside. She looked around and smiled at how there was food and clothes set up and a nice fire in the fireplace. Mac put her favorite things in a basket by the couch.
"Thank you," she said when he walked over to her.
He kissed her forehead and smiled.
"I will do anything for you. Always remember that."
She hugged him and nodded.
Patrick lay back in the bed in the room and Anna walked to Robin.
"Can I help you into your bed?"
Robin couldn't do it and Patrick watched her, knowing her struggle.
"No. I'm going to take a shower first. We're okay for now."
Anna nodded and looked at Mac.
"Okay. We will be in touch on the burner phone. Don't answer the door or do anything without instruction. We have people scouring the area for Obrecht, but until she is found, we need to be extra careful."
"Okay," Robin said. "Maybe Emma can come by tomorrow? I don't want her to be scared."
Mac smiled at her.
"We have a big sleepover planned, so no worries about that. I promised her we would watch Frozen and Cinderella and then Tangled. She is going to show me all of the reasons why Disney needs to write stronger female characters."
Patrick and Robin laughed and Mac sighed.
"As long as she's happy."
They said goodbye and Robin locked the door behind them.
"Robin? Can you come talk to me?" he asked her.
"Are you okay? I would really like to take a shower and rest."
"I'm fine. I'm worried about you."
"I'm okay. I'll be out soon," she said and walked into the bathroom.
Patrick lay back and sighed.
She wasn't okay. Not by a long shot.

Patrick woke up and looked around, taking a minute to remember where he was. He felt much better after a nap and some meds, but he realized he didn't see Robin.
"Robin?" he called out and sat up, thankful he was feeling stronger. His broken ribs were causing a lot of discomfort, but he didn't let it stop him.
He looked to the floor and saw her lying there, asleep by the fire. She was wearing a pair of shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt and he could see more scars on her legs that he knew weren't there before. She started to whimper and he knew she was dreaming.
He grabbed the cane from the side of the bed and slowly stood up. He sucked in the pain as he slowly limped to the blanket and sat down gently near her.
He took a minute to breathe and settle the pain before he reached to touch her.
She sat up quickly and he smiled.
"It's okay. You were dreaming."
She smoothed her hair back and shook her head.
"You should be in bed. Let me help you back up."
He reached to take her hand and she felt her chin quiver.
"Talk to me, please. What's running through your mind?"
She sighed and shrugged.
"I'm just struggling with a few things."
He smiled and waited.
"Such as?"
"Seeing you so hurt. Being back in that room. Seeing Sam hold your hand."
She didn't mean to say the last part out loud, but now that she had, she looked at him.
"Robin, I love you. There is no other woman in my heart; there never has been."
"I know. I'm just a little insecure," she tucked her legs under her. "Patrick, I am a very self sufficient woman, we both know that."
He chuckled and nodded with her.
"But when it comes to you and love, I feel like I won't survive being hurt again. I can't love you half way and I don't want you to be with me if you don't believe in us. I will be okay with us co parenting Emma and I will learn to deal with having you in my life as my friend. What I can't handle is if you decide to let me go again. I'm not strong enough. I know I act like I am, but I'm not."
His tears fell as he watched her, so vulnerable and open with him. This was a side to her he adored and he knew he was so lucky she shared it with him.
"Can you come closer so I can hold you?"
She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hands.
"I mean, I come with a lot of baggage," she said as she moved a little closer. "I'm HIV positive and that's huge. You haven't had to worry about that in a while and I don't know if you want to have to take precautions again. I'm also really opinionated and I don't plan on stopping that."
She moved a little closer and continued.
"Plus, I act all brave and strong in front of most people," she sniffed. "But I'm not. I know I helped you get free, but while you were lying there now in bed after my shower, I wanted nothing more than to lie with you, in your arms, but I couldn't get into the bed. I mean, how pathetic, you know? I couldn't get in the bed with the man I love and I don't know that I'll ever get over that."
He moved a little to meet her and gently pulled her to him. She curled up between his legs and rested her head gently against his chest.
"Let me tell you what I know," he said as he rubbed her back. "You are worth it all."
She looked up at him with a question in her eyes.
"You are worth it all," he continued. "Being with you is the greatest blessing in the world, and if I had to take a million precautions to love you, I would be grateful there was away to love you. Your opinions are what challenge me to be a better doctor, father and man. I adore your strength, but your sensitivity and vulnerability are my favorite. When you show me your heart, it's the most beautiful blessing."
She sniffed and he smiled.
"You are going to be okay. We are going to work through everything that happened and in doing that; the bed will stop being an issue. I believe that. It might take some time, but lucky for us, we have more of that than ever before."
She smiled and he sat up more, moving so she looked at him.
"What I need you to know is that your fears and hesitations about me are not on you, but me. I owe you a lifetime of trust and I intend to prove it to you. I am going to work at regaining your trust and I will make up for all of the loneliness and sadness of the past few years. I am going to make it my mission in life to bring happiness to yours. I just need you to give me a chance. I want another chance."
She reached to his bruised face and her tears spilled over her cheeks.
"Are you sure you don't want anyone else?"
He knew she was truly struggling with this and he had nobody but himself to blame.
"I don't want anyone but you. I don't want anyone but you," he said again and she moved to softly kiss him.
"I'm so sorry you were hurt," he said softly.
"I know," she smiled. "I just want us all to be safe. I'm scared and I don't want to be scared any more."
"I know, but we are together in a safe place and our daughter is safe and all we have to worry about is enjoying this time together."
She lay against him again and smiled.
"You make it sound like a vacation. You are broken and bruised and I'm a mess and we are in a safe house because people want us dead."
"Stop being so romantic," he said and they both laughed.
"I'm just so tired," she said.
"Look, I know it's bad, but I think this is the beginning of something so much better. The bumps and bruises will heal. We will heal. We are going to be okay."
She let out a big sigh.
"Promise?"
He kissed the top of her head.
"I promise. Now try and sleep."
She closed her eyes and he held her, vowing to do all he could to be the man she deserved.
