Well, this took a lot longer than I expected. This chapter will be Owen's gym battle with Ramos, and he's in for one hell of a challenge! Given the Pokemon he's using, this is going to be one of the tougher gym battles Owen will have in Kalos. Now let's get started! Also, thank you for all the reviews last chapter!

Blaze Falcon: Yeah, Larenz is going to be way stronger than Nando (who I actually liked), and the reason for Chespin battling Tyrunt was because Frogadier's going to be getting a lot more attention within the next few chapters while Tyrunt hasn't gotten much since Owen's first gym battle against Korrina

Guest: Don't worry, I planned on having the masquerade party being brought up ever since I wrote it, and it does suck that Brooklyn lost, but at least she's got another tough rival

Defender31415: He really is a jerk, but you'll find out why later in the story. And thanks!

Elodus: Thank you! I never think I do a good job of writing the contests, so it's good to hear you think otherwise :)

midnightrebellion86: That's a really interesting idea that I may end up using, but I think I have an idea that will really help strengthen their relationship (it'll probably happen some time around next arc)

MCMXCV: It seems like everyone was really pulling for Brooklyn even though some/most of you hated her a year ago, haha. And thanks for the feedback about the battle

Guardianboy: Thank you for the compliment! I really appreciate the support and I'll make sure to keep putting out chapters at the highest quality possible :)

FlameStriker123: Haha, Brooklyn's really going to have to train if she wants to have any chance of competing with Larenz, and I'm glad you like Chespin! Personally, he's probably one of my favorites on this team, then again, I love all of them because I wouldn't have Owen catch any Pokemon I hate, lol

With Frogadier and Charizard by his side and Brooklyn, Daniel, Cindy, Eddy, and Olivia following him, Owen walked up to the gigantic tree that towered over Coumarine City. Inside was the gym he was so eager to challenge, and the automatic doors opened as the teen approached the entrance. As he stepped inside, Owen gaped at the incredible gym, which looked exactly like a jungle. The large group of trainers slowly weaved their way through hundreds of vines and bushes before reaching a spiraling staircase that looked incredibly unstable.

"Are we supposed to go up here?" Owen asked the others, hoping someone would know the answer.

"No clue, but let's go!" Daniel exclaimed, taking the lead and flying up the stairs effortlessly. The others followed after slowly with Owen staying at the back. Brooklyn was standing just in front of him as they continued walking up, and the girl looked back to see a determined look on the teen's face.

"I'm guessing you're feeling pretty confident," she told Owen.

"You know it. We're going to give this everything we've got," the Kantonian replied with a smile. "By the way, you were awesome at your contest." He smiled again after complimenting Brooklyn, and the girl beamed in response.

"Thanks, that means a lot," she replied. Owen nodded and they eventually reached the top of the stairs, which led to a large room. The battlefield was covered in grass while trees were hanging over, and several exotic plants covered random portions of the ground. There were also vines hanging from the trees, which made the battlefield seem darker. Once Owen stepped onto the battlefield, an old man walked out of another room, which looked to be a hollowed out area of a tree.

"Ah, I see you've decided to challenge me, Owen. I've been looking forward to this since we met yesterday," Ramos told Owen as the teen stepped into the trainer box. "Just give me a moment, I need to give a badge to the boy that just challenged me." Ramos disappeared back into the hollowed out room he had appeared from, and he walked back out with a familiar looking trainer.

"Larenz?" Owen asked in disbelief as his rival walked over towards the bench, which was concrete stairs that looked like stadium seating. Owen watched as Larenz sat down in the back row of concrete by himself with a smug look on his face, and he flashed Owen his fourth badge.

"Oh? You two know each other?" Ramos inquired.

"Yeah, we battled a couple months back," Larenz replied quickly as a referee walked into the referee box.

"This will be a three versus three gym battle between Ramos and Owen where only the challenger may substitute Pokemon! Furthermore, once all Pokemon on one side are unable to battle, the battle will be over! Ramos, choose your first Pokemon!"

"Jumpluff, begin the battle!" Ramos yelled as he released his first Pokemon. A Jumpluff flew out of the Pokeball and continued to fly around the room before settling on one of the trees near Ramos.

"I wonder, who's Owen going to pick?" Cindy asked as she looked around at the abundance of trainers sitting near her.

"Well, if he wants the best type advantage, he'll choose Butterfree. Then again, this is Owen we're talking about, so anything's fair game," Eddy told Cindy.

"Gastly, let's go!" Owen shouted while launching his first Pokeball forward. Gastly materialized from the light that poured out of the Pokeball, and she looked around before staring at Jumpluff and Ramos. Frogadier and Charizard both looked at Owen cautiously, as they could tell Gastly clearly wasn't comfortable with battling even though she wanted to participate.

"This battle will be between Jumpluff and Gastly! Begin!"

"Gastly, use Night Shade!" Owen ordered. Gastly's eyes flashed white before a vertical line of purple energy zipped through the air and towards Jumpluff, who simply hopped off the branch he was sitting on. The blue ball with spores for wings then glided across the battlefield before Ramos called out an attack for his first Pokemon.

"Jumpluff, use Fairy Wind!" The grass and flying type quickly began to flap its spores rapidly, creating a gust of pink wind that turned into a tornado. The strange attack was too quick for Owen to counter, resulting in Gastly being caught in the middle of the super effective move.

"Break free with Sucker Punch!" Gastly attempted to destroy the painful attack, but she was unable to use Sucker Punch, which perplexed her, Owen, Frogadier, Charizard, and the spectators.

"Why didn't Gastly use Sucker Punch?" Olivia asked in confusion.

"Sucker Punch only works when an attack from the opponent is called before. Because Owen had the first move, the turn reset. If he had the second move, then Gastly would've been able to use it," Daniel explained before Eddy could, making the eight year old cross his arms and pout.

"Now use Acrobatics, Jumpluff!" Ramos yelled. Jumpluff hopped on the nearest branch, which was above Owen, and he jumped down and began to whack Gastly with his spores. The ghost type let out a pained cry as Jumpluff continued attacking, but the Fairy Wind died down, allowing her to float away from Jumpluff.

"Gastly, use Confuse Ray!"

"End this with Fairy Wind!" Before Gastly could even try to use her status inflicting move on Jumpluff, the grass type created another gust of pink air. Gastly's eyes shot wide open and she tried to get away from the wind by flying over to Ramos' side of the battlefield, but the attack continued to follow her.

"Gastly, return!" Owen called as he zapped the frightened Pokemon into her Pokeball before she could be hit by the super effective attack. The teen let out a sigh of relief as he looked at Gastly's Pokeball and then over at his two starters.

"Pathetic," Larenz muttered as Owen placed Gastly's Pokeball back on his belt, acting as if nothing had happened.

"That Jumpluff is really strong," Brooklyn remarked. "I mean, Gastly didn't have a chance!"

"That's because Gastly's weak," Larenz spat under his breath, though no one heard him.

"Should I send out Butterfree? No, I can't use her this early, and Hawlucha's battle style doesn't translate well against Jumpluff," Owen thought to himself. The teen looked around at the battlefield while trying to think of who he should choose, and a lightbulb went off in his head.

"Chespin, I choose you!" The bench gasped as Owen's second Pokemon broke out of his Pokeball while Larenz shook his head at Owen's stupidity. Chespin looked around at the battlefield just like Gastly had done, but he grinned because he was comfortable with the terrain."

"That's a strange pick, though we'll find out if it was the right one soon," Ramos told Owen from across the room.

"This battle will be between Jumpluff and Chespin! Begin!"

"Jumpluff, use Acrobatics!" Ramos commanded, trying to deal massive damage with the super effective attack. Jumpluff took to the air once again and flew towards Chespin before descending at a furious pace, but Owen and his Pokemon were more than ready to counter.

"Dodge it and use Vine Whip to swing from the tree branches!" Owen shouted. Chespin nodded and fired two vines from his neck straight up, and they wrapped around the branches above. Chespin then pulled himself up as quickly as possible, and Jumpluff missed his attack.

"Redirect Chespin with Fairy Wind!" Ramos ordered, seeing that Chespin was swinging from branch to branch with his vines. Jumpluff whipped his arms together and caused a powerful wind, which hurt Chespin while also making him lose his balance.

"Hide behind the tree and use Needle Arm!" Chespin did as he was told and pulled himself up before camping out behind a tree. Jumpluff suddenly stopped his attack and began to search for Chespin, who blended in perfectly with the surroundings. Once Jumpluff was close enough Chespin leaped out from behind the tree and his arm extended while glowing white. In the blink of an eye Chespin slammed his arm over Jumpluff's head, sending the flying type straight into the ground.

"Jumpluff, hold on!"

"Keep it up, Chespin! Use Mega Drain and take Jumpluff out of the air!" Owen demanded as Jumpluff began to fly again. Chespin nodded and the spikes on his head began to glow dark green before he fired dozens of spikes at his fully evolved opponent. Jumpluff attempted to get away from the attack but was overwhelmed by the amount of arrows, and he was crushed by the attack. Chespin, meanwhile, hopped towards the branch closest to Jumpluff and continued attacking while also restoring his health.

"Get away from Chespin, Jumpluff!"

"Not on our watch! Grab Jumpluff and slam him against the ground!" Jumpluff sprung up as Chespin's Mega Drain attack ceased, and he tried flying away from the tiny grass type, but Chespin wasn't going to let that happen. The brown Pokemon fired two vines out of his neck and wrapped them around Jumpluff's arms and pulled the flying type towards him. Chespin then grinned at his opponent and hopped off the branch before spinning like a wheel and he hurled Jumpluff into the ground, making a cloud of dust shoot up and cover the battlefield. Once the dust settled, everyone saw Chespin standing over Jumpluff victoriously while Ramos' Pokemon was unconscious.

"Jumpluff is unable to battle! Ramos, choose your next Pokemon!"

"Thank you for your efforts, Jumpluff," the old man told his Pokemon while withdrawing it back inside its Pokeball. "That was a gutsy choice in sending out your Chespin, but it paid off. I like your style," Ramos complimented with a youthful grin while bowing to Owen and Chespin. "But I'm not going to let you win! Weepinbell, go!"

"That's not good," Olivia remarked as the grass and poison type appeared in front of Ramos. "Weepinbell's poison moves will do a lot of damage to Chespin if they hit."

"So? Chespin was weak to Jumpluff's flying attacks and he still won. Owen and Chespin have this," Cindy proclaimed, making Larenz shake his head in disgust.

"This battle will be between Weepinbell and Chespin! Begin!"

"Weepinbell, use Razor Leaf!" Ramos commanded aggressively. Weepinbell whipped its arms - which, ironically, were leaves - and fired dozens of leaves towards Chespin, who was waiting for Owen's counterattack.

"Use Vine Whip to stop all the leaves!" Owen countered confidently, not knowing he was falling fright into Ramos' trap. Chespin released two vines from his neck and began to slap every leaf headed towards him, and Weepinbell disappeared while the smaller grass type was preoccupied with the Razor Leaf attack. Once the leaves stopped coming in, Chespin and Owen looked around at the dimly lit room and couldn't find Weepinbell, who was hiding behind one of the bushes near Chespin.

"Use Vine Whip to pull Chespin in and then bite his head!" Ramos yelled. Owen, Chespin, Frogadier, Charizard, and everyone watching gasped when two vines wrapped around Chespin's body and yanked him towards the bush Weepinbell was hiding behind. The grass and poison type then leaped forward and bit Chespin's head as hard as he could, making the tiny Pokemon cry out in pain.

"Use Mega Drain to get Weepinbell off!"

"Acid!" Before Chespin could attack, Weepinbell released the Acid attack in a nanosecond. Chespin dropped to the ground when the super effective attack hit his head, and he started to scream bloody murder. Weepinbell, meanwhile, continued to use Acid. Owen watched as his Pokemon continued to writhe in pain until an idea popped in his head, though he wasn't sure if it would work.

"Chespin, use Rollout and slam into a tree!" the fifteen year old cried. Chespin snapped out of his screaming and began to spin like a wheel as he started to fly over towards the closest tree. Due to Chespin spinning, Weepinbell had a difficult time trying to release his grip on Chespin and took a decent amount of damage, but he somehow managed to let go of Chespin just as they were about to crash. Chespin, however, didn't realize that Weepinbell had let go, and he slammed into the tree as hard as he could, dealing a massive amount of damage to the tiny grass type.

"Weepinbell, end this with Acid!" Ramos shouted as Chespin was laying on his back, unable to move due to exhaustion. Owen could only watch as the powerful grass type was drenched in the purple toxins, and he fainted instantly.

"Chespin is unable to battle! Owen, choose your next Pokemon!"

"You were awesome, Chespin, take a long rest." Owen said to Chespin as he was withdrawn to his Pokeball.

"Oh my god, that was awful," Brooklyn commented as her hands covered her mouth.

"Who's he going to use now? Gastly clearly can't keep up with Ramos' Pokemon, so Owen really needs to hit a home run with this pick," Daniel opined. Larenz looked down at the teen his age and, for once, nodded in agreement. At least they weren't all idiots.

"Gastly, you're up again!" Owen shouted, shocking everyone. The ghost and poison type floated out of her Pokeball and looked around at her surroundings, remembering that she was in the gym battle. "Gastly, make sure you take a deep breath and have fun. There's no pressure," Owen advised the weak Pokemon. Gastly nodded and smiled when she saw Frogadier and Charizard cheering for her.

"This battle will be between Weepinbell and Gastly! Begin!"

"Razor Leaf, Weepinbell!"

"Use Sucker Punch, Gastly!" As Weepinbell wound his arms back to fire dozens of leaves towards Gastly, the ghost fired a bullet of energy towards the grass type and it hit Weepinbell hard, sending the plant flying into the bushes near Ramos. The elderly man stared at Gastly in awe as the Pokemon had just unleashed such a ridiculous amount of power after only hearing encouraging words, making the man wonder how strong Gastly truly was.

"Weepinbell, use the bushes to your advantage! Grab Gastly with Vine Whip and pull her close to you!" Just like he had done against Chespin, Weepinbell shot two vines out of nowhere and they wrapped around Gastly before yanking her towards the grass type. Little did Ramos know, Gastly had the perfect counterattack.

"Hit 'em with Lick!" Owen yelled. Gastly quickly licked Weepinbell's face, making the grass type's vines fall to the ground, as he was paralyzed.

"Wh-what!? Weepinbell, get out of there!"

"Now hit Weepinbell with a max power Night Shade!" Gastly's eyes flashed with light for a split second before a vertical wave of purple energy slashed Weepinbell and launched him across the battlefield.

"Weepinbell, use Razor Leaf!" Weepinbell attempted to fire a flurry of leaves at Gastly, but the paralysis took over and kept him from moving a muscle, giving Owen and Gastly the perfect chance to attack.

"Gastly, use Night Shade again!" Because Weepinbell was unable to move, Gastly floated towards her opponent and charged up her Night Shade attack at pointblank range. Then, she fired the wicked attack and it sent Weepinbell flying past Ramos and off the battlefield, where he was laying facedown.

"Weepinbell is unable to battle! Ramos, choose your last Pokemon!"

"Yeah! Way to go, Gastly!" Eddy roared in excitement as the ghost celebrated her victory with Frogadier while Charizard gave her a thumbs up.

"What just happened? How did Gastly get so strong during that battle?" Olivia asked.

"I guess it was Owen telling her to relax. That's the only thing I can think of," Daniel replied.

"While I give you credit for taking out my first two Pokemon, I guarantee you won't defeat my last," Ramos told Owen with a grin.

"We'll see about that," Owen shot back with a grin of his own.

"Gogoat, take the field!" After Ramos withdrew Weepinbell, the biggest Gogoat Owen had ever seen slammed on the field. Gastly turned to see her opponent and was more than ready to take on the huge grass type, but Owen didn't want her to battle.

"Gastly, come back. Hawlucha, I choose you!" Owen called as Gastly was zapped back into her Pokeball. He then released Hawlucha from his, and the bipedal eagle stared at his opponent with no fear.

"Nice choice," Cindy commented, thinking about the type advantage Owen had with Hawlucha. "Hawlucha's faster than Gogoat and should be able to use the trees to his advantage, too."

"This battle will be between Gogoat and Hawlucha! Begin!"

"Gogoat, use Take Down!" Ramos shouted. Without hesitation, Gogoat trudged across the grassy battlefield while a thick white light flew off his back. Due to Gogoat's speed - or lack thereof - Owen and Hawlucha were provided ample time to evade the attack.

"Dodge and jump on the branches overhead!" Owen instructed. Hawlucha nodded and sprung up before grabbing the branch that was above him. He then effortlessly swung himself on top of it and waited patiently for Owen's next command. The teen thought he had much more time than he actually did because Gogoat actually had a special attack, which Owen didn't think he did.

"Now use Energy Ball, Gogoat!" The normal and grass type created and fired a free ball from his mouth towards Hawlucha, and the fighting type was hit hard. In fact, Hawlucha nearly fell off the tree branch, but was able to recover with fancy footwork, impressing Ramos and everyone watching, with the exception of Larenz.

"Shake it off and come right back with Flying Press!" Hawlucha hopped off the branch and was coated in a thin sliver of light before he crashed on Gogoat, who collapsed under the pressure Hawlucha created. "Now grab on to Gogoat's horns!" Owen barked as Gogoat got up and attempted to shake Hawlucha off. The fighting and flying type snatched a hold of his opponent's horns with lighting quick reflexes, and Gogoat began to run around angrily in an attempt to rid himself of Hawlucha.

"Gogoat, use Vine Whip to grab Hawlucha and throw him off your back!" Calmly, Gogoat released two vines from his neck and grabbed Hawlucha before throwing him towards Owen, and then he ran back to Ramos. As Hawlucha rose to his feet, Owen noticed an opening to attack, prompting him to give Hawlucha an order.

"Strike with Aerial Ace, Hawlucha!" The eagle didn't wait a second to launch himself into the air before flying towards Gogoat at a breakneck pace while white streaks of light flew off his beak. While that happened, Ramos smirked slyly, knowing that Owen had just fallen into his trap. The old man glances at the vines hanging in-between the trees, and so did Gogoat.

"Gogoat, use Vine Whip and tangle Hawlucha up in the vines!" Gogoat did as he was told, and he grabbed Hawlucha with one of his vines while he used the vines from the trees to tie him up.

"Hawlucha!" Owen screamed, realizing his Pokemon was stuck once Hawlucha couldn't break out of the vines.

"This isn't good," Eddy muttered.

"Finish this with Solarbeam!" Gogoat nodded and stuck his head straight in the air while tiny bits of light began to form in front of his mouth. As the attack continued to build, Hawlucha fought furiously to break out of the vines, but was unable to do so, giving Gogoat an easy target. The goat fired the powerful grass type attack and it exploded on contact with Hawlucha. The fighting and flying type flew across the battlefield and slammed into Owen, who caught his Pokemon.

"Hawlucha is unable to battle! Owen, choose your last Pokemon!" the referee shouted, seeing Hawlucha's limp body.

"Great job, Hawlucha, you wore Gogoat down just like I wanted," Owen told the fainted Pokemon, noticing Gogoat panting.

"Gastly, it's all up to you!" For the third time Gastly floated out of her Pokeball and occupied Owen's half of the battlefield. Surprisingly, she was grinning confidently, which eased Owen's nerves. "Gastly, stay away from the middle of the field. Gogoat's going to try to trap you with the vines."

"Stly," the ghost replied without looking at her trainer.

"This battle will be between Gogoat and Gastly! Begin!"

"Gogoat, use Energy Ball!" Ramos commanded, hoping he could end the battle with a potential critical hit. Owen wouldn't let that happen, though. On top of that, Gastly's confidence had rose exponentially, and she wasn't ready to lose.

"Land a Sucker Punch before they can attack!" Owen countered. In the blink of an eye Gastly released a bullet of energy that slammed into Gogoat and pushed the bulky Pokemon backwards. Ramos cursed under his breath as he had fallen for the same trick twice, but he wouldn't be fooled a third time.

"Damn, that was quick. Gogoat, use Energy Ball on the ground and hide while the smoke covers you!" Gogoat hurriedly fired an Energy Ball straight into the ground and a cloud of smoke covered Ramos' half of the battlefield, allowing Gogoat to find a hiding place in the thick grass. Once the smoke settled, Owen and Gastly looked around for Gogoat, but the were unable to find the normal and grass type. "Throw Gastly into the vines with Vine Whip!" Ramos shouted. As soon as he did, Gastly was grabbed by two vines and then thrown into the vines between the trees in the middle of the battlefield before she was tangled in them.

"Gastly, no!" Owen shouted before cursing under his breath.

"You put up quite the fight, Owen, but this is where the battle ends. Gogoat, fire!" Gogoat nodded and slammed his hooves on the ground before unleashing a devastating Solarbeam that exploded when it hit Gastly, and the ghost type cried out in pain as smoke covered the battlefield. After moments of waiting, the smoke dissipated and revealed Gastly laying on the ground face down.

"Gastly, please, you have to get up!" Owen begged his final Pokemon as the referee walked over and stuck his arms in the air to signal the end of the battle. As he did so, Gastly was covered in a bright light, and her body began to change shape. The circular Pokemon soon became much more convex looking, and there were two large, floating hands close to its body.

"Haunter, the Gas Pokemon. If you get the feeling of being watched in darkness when nobody is around, Haunter is there. New moves learned: Shadow Punch, Payback."

Owen looked up from his Pokedex and stared at the Pokemon floating in front of him, and he could barely recognize it. Haunter looked so much more confident than when she was a Gastly, and she turned to give Owen a reassuring nod, making him grin.

"Haunter, hit Gogoat with Payback!" Owen shouted, wasting no time in attacking. Haunter snickered before winding back and launching her right fist forward. The purple hand turned completely black before it collided with Gogoat's face, nearly knocking the bulky Pokemon over.

"Well, this changes things," Ramos joked to himself before focusing on the battle. "Gogoat, use Razor Leaf!"

"Use Shadow Punch to block the leaves and then use Confuse Ray!" Haunter flew through the air as Gogoat fired leaves at her, and she launched both of her fists into the wave of leaves, destroying all of them. Then, she grabbed Gogoat's horns and stared into his eyes before hitting him with an orange ring of energy. Gogoat suddenly began to teeter back and forth as if he had suddenly lost his balance, which made the crowd cheer.

"Gogoat, use Vine Whip!" Ramos shouted desperately. Despite being confused, Gogoat successfully slapped Haunter with his vines, though it wasn't enough to knock the ghost type out.

"Perfect. Haunter, Payback!" Haunter snickered after hearing her trainer's command, and she wound back before striking Gogoat in the face with her black fist. The normal and grass type was knocked unconscious immediately, and the referee threw his arms in the air.

"Gogoat is unable to battle! That means Owen is the winner!"

"Alright! We did it!" Owen cheered before hugging Frogadier and Charizard. Once he pulled away from his two starters, Owen was grabbed by Haunter, and the ghost type nearly squeezed the life out of him.

"That was a well deserved win, young man," Ramos told Owen as he handed him a small piece of metal. "That's the Plant Badge. You earned it."

"Thank you, Ramos. Come on, guys. Let's go!" Owen exclaimed as he put away his fourth badge and walked over to his friends.

"Hold on a second," Larenz ordered, making everyone stop where they were. "Owen, I challenge you to a full battle!"

Ooh, Larenz with the dramatic line of the chapter. So, Owen beat Ramos thanks to the combined efforts of Chespin, Hawlucha, and Haunter, and now he'll be battling Larenz! With four badges down, we're nearing the halfway point of the story (assuming I do all of the fillers, there should be at least forty more chapters), but Owen's team hasn't even taken it's full shape yet. And what's up with Team Grim? Oh well, I guess you'll find out soon enough :P Till next time, peace out.

1) MVP of the battle?

2) Will Owen win? Or Larenz?

3) Who should sit out for Owen's battle? (Aside from Charizard)

Next Chapter: "Crouching Rival, Hidden Meganium": Owen and Larenz square off in their second battle as they both aim to destroy each other. With a drastically improved team, will Larenz defeat Owen?
