Disclaimer: Sadly I did not write Teen Wolf.
I'm so sorry this took so long to get up! My computer broke. To make up for my lapse in time I made this chapter really long, so get comfortable. I hope you guys like it! Sorry it's so long!
Derek and Avery aren't best friends or anything within that realm but for some unknown reason she cares about him. Well maybe not completely unknown; it's probably because he's the only one who's actually helping her achieve her revenge. She needs him… or needed him is more like it. Now she's stuck behind a door with Scott and Stiles at the school while Derek is dead outside.
"Lock it! Lock it!" Scott shouts.
"We don't have a key!" Stiles shouts back
"What the hell was that?!" Avery says sucking in deep breaths that refuse to reach her lungs. "We need to go see if Derek's ok! Why did you stop me Stiles?!" She asks pulling on the doors to keep them closed with the boys.
"Because it would have killed you too, Avery!" Stiles responds looking insulted that she would want otherwise.
"Guys, can we argue about this later and focus on the giant alpha outside trying to kill us?!" Scott asks, acting as Avery and Stiles' usual mediator. "Grab something to lock it!" Scott says.
"Like what?!" Avery and Stiles shout back at the same time.
"I don't know. Think!" Scott says, noticeably panicking. Stiles gets his stupid idea face on and stands up to look out the window. Avery does the same thing and suddenly understands Stiles plan is to run out into the Alpha infested grounds to get the bolt cutter on the floor.
"No." Scott says as he realizes the plan Avery did. "Stiles don't!"
"Stiles won't have to." Avery says before she pushes the door open and runs for the tool.
"Avery!" She hears Stiles call out form behind her but keeps moving.
Just as she grabs the tools she hears Stiles and Scott banging on the door. She turns to see them pointing at Stiles car or rather the alpha standing in front of it. Its big and furry and kind of looks like a wolf with red eyes but less fur. She turns around quickly and sprints to the double doors. As she's going through the door she grabs the long chain wrapped around the door handles then hands the bolt cutters off to Stiles and he places them on the door handles.
"Where is it?" Scott asks as he and Stiles look out the window.
"Wasn't it just behind me?" Avery asks pacing back and forth. The boys back away from the door and stop next to her.
"That won't hold, will it?" Scott asks suddenly.
"Against a giant wolf thing? Hmm let me think about that for a moment… No." Avery responds sassier then she meant to.
Suddenly a howl comes from outside. They all share a look then sprint in the same direction down the hall. Scott takes the lead and turns into a classroom with Avery and Stiles not far behind.
"Get the desk," Scott says quickly. They couldn't have pushed it more then an inch when Stiles stops them.
"Stop, stop. The doors not going to keep it out."
"I know." Scott replies.
"It's your boss." Stiles says slightly out of breath.
"What?" Scott asks confused.
"Deaton, the alpha your—your boss." Stiles clarifies for Scott and Avery.
"No." Avery and Scott say at the same time.
"Yes. Murdering, psycho werewolf." Stiles continues.
"It can't be." Scott shoots back in retaliation bringing his hands down onto the desk.
"Come on. He disappears and ten seconds later that thing shows up and tosses Derek twenty feet through the air." Stiles shrugs and Avery does have to admit that he has a point.
"Its not him."
"He killed Derek."
"Derek's not dead. He can't be dead." Scott says in denial.
"Scott, he was coughing up blood and thrown through the air! Of course he's dead! He's dead and we're next unless we find a way out!" Avery says running her hands down her curly hair.
"What do we do?!"
"We get to my jeep. We get out of here. You seriously think about quitting your job. Good?" Stiles says and the other two nod in agreement then run over to the windows to assess the situation. Scott starts pawing at the frame, trying to slide it open. Stiles gestures to the window and sighs. "They don't open. The schools climate control."
"Problem with the get away car." Avery says pointing to Stiles jeep, which has a huge dent in the hood.
"What the hell happened?!" Stiles whispers harshly once he sees his car.
Just as he says that the battery to his car comes flying through the window giving an explanation to his question.
"I'm so glad I didn't bring my car." Avery gives a sigh of relief causing Stiles to shoot her a dirty look. "We have to get out of here."
"We can't. What if he's right outside?" Scott asks back.
"He obviously already is, and he knows we're in here. It'll be better to keep moving." Avery tries to reason with them.
"Fine lets go," Scott agrees.
"After you," Avery gestures for Scott to go first.
"Come on this way." Scott begins to walk down the hall but Stiles stops him.
"No, no, no. We have to go somewhere without windows." Stiles offers up.
"How about the locker room?" Scott questions as his expression mimics Stiles idea face. Stiles agrees quickly and the boys lead the way to locker room.
"Call your dad." Scott says as the three of them walk into the locker room.
"And tell him what?"
"Anything, that there's a gas leak, a fire anything," Scott says with a shrug. "If that thing sees a parking lot full of cop cars it will take off." Avery decides to keep quiet as the boys discuss the topic. Sometimes it's best to let best friends argue.
"What if it doesn't? What if it turns completely terminator and takes out every cop insight? Including my dad."
"They have guns."
"And Derek had to be shot with a wolfs bane laced bullet to even slow him down. Remember that?" Stiles shoots down Scott's plan fast.
"Then we have to… then we have to find a way out and just run for it."
"There's nothing around the school for at least a mile."
"What about Derek's car?" Scott suggests.
"That could work. We go outside, we get the keys off his body, and then we take his car." Stile sums up the plan.
"What? We can't do that." Avery finally speaks shaking her head. "We can't just take his keys from his dead body."
"Why? It's not like he's using them." Stiles replies back.
"Stil-," she starts to say but Scott interrupts her.
"Avery, we'll take Derek with us. We won't leave him behind." He says looking into her eyes.
"Promise?" She says holding up her pinky finger.
"Yeah, yeah. I promise." He says and wraps his pinky around hers slowly.
"Fine." She says and drops her hand to her side. The three of them start to make their way to the door, but just as Stiles reaches for the doorknob Scott stops him.
"What?" Stiles asks looking at Scott.
"I think I heard something," he replies back stiffly.
"What exactly did you hear?" Avery asks Scott from behind them.
"Quiet." Scott shushes, when no ones talking anymore Avery can hear it too, footsteps.
"Hide," Scott says suddenly.
Stiles immediately jumps into a locker, Scott hesitates for a moment and jumps into a locker opposite of Stiles. Avery stands there for a couple of seconds hoping that a different hiding spot will reveal itself before she's forced to go into a sweaty locker. Sadly nothing comes to mind before Stiles grabs her arm and pulls her into the locker with him. The chain from the doors is still in her hands and it makes a clatter noise as she closes the locker door behind her. She's right it does smell bad, like a dirty sweat sock that's been dipped in water and left to mold.
All of a sudden Avery notices how close she is to Stiles and the smell doesn't matter. She immediately tightens up and her palms start to sweat in their usual spaz way. She tries to seem casual and not pay attention to him but he's staring down at her so intently with those big brown eyes that she's forced to look up. When she finally gives in and glances up her stomach twists into knots. He's so close she's afraid he can hear her heart pounding in her chest. His eyes just pour into hers and her breath catches in her throat when she feels his hands brush against her arms. She can't take it. She really wants to kiss him. But they're friends. She can't suddenly be having the urge to kiss her best friend. That would make things weird. Plus she has Jake. Jake is… okay. Stiles starts brush a piece of hair out of her face and she starts to lose focus. Jake who?
Suddenly Avery hears a scream and Scott jumps out of the locker. Stiles stumbles out of their locker leaving Avery frozen in place. She gets out a little more graceful than the boys and releases the breath she didn't know she had been holding in. She silently thanks the universe when she comes face to face with the janitor. He did ruin the moment between her and Stiles but she realizes it would have been awful for her first kiss to be with her best friend. Talk about a friendship killer. She knows all too well that it would have ended with them never talking again and her heart being broken while she cries into a pint of rocky road ice cream.
"What are you trying to do? Kill me?" The Janitor asks holding a hand over his heart. "All three of you get out." He says realizing the three teenagers at school in the middle of the night.
"Just listen to us for a second, please." Avery asks pleading to take sanctuary in the boys locker room.
"Get the hell out of here right now." He shoots back shoving the three of them out the door quiet violently
"Just give us a second to explain." Stiles says as Avery gets pushed through the door.
"Just shut up and go!"
Right as he finishes his sentence he gets pulled back into the locker and the door shuts. A couple of seconds later his body slams against the door and blood splatters across the window. Avery reaches for the handle and tries to pull it open but it won't budge. Stiles realizes that it's useless and pulls on Avery's arm. She knows he's right—there's nothing she can do but she can't help feeling a little guilty as she starts to run down the hall alongside Stiles and Scott.
The three of them run down the hallway with Avery in front. She decides to turn the corner to get to the side exit instead of continuing onward. It takes her a minute to realize the boys didn't follow her and instead decided to go straight to the other exit. A second later she hears the breaking of glass and something heavy hitting the floor. She doesn't hesitate to turn around and run back down the hall. She follows the sound of growling and sees Scott and Stiles cornered at the end of the hall with the alpha edging towards them.
"I must be crazy." She whispers to herself before running forward and swinging the chain in her hands out and around the alpha's leg, like she's seen in the movies.
Surprisingly it works and she yanks on the chain as hard as she can, causing the alpha to trip. It regains its balance quickly though and turns to her. What little excitement she had from the cool leg thing is definitely vanishes as she stares into the alphas red eyes. It charges her and she whips the chain downward. The second the chain connects with the alphas face she turns to run yelling for the boys to follow her. She hears their footsteps behind her and Scott passes her in seconds using his werewolf speed. He opens a door to a stairwell and they each take them two at a time. Sadly the stairs lead to some creepy basement place with rusted lockers and poor lighting. Exactly the place one would expect a murder to take place.
"I'm not dying at school," Avery whispers to the boys. "I'm supposed to die at the ripe old age of one hundred in my sleep next to the love of my life. I'm supposed to have The Notebook death." She finishes and glances at Stiles who gives her a funny look. "Come on. You can't tell me you've never seen The Notebook. It has Ryan Gosling in it." Scott taps her arm and shakes his head letting her know it's not the time. "Right… sorry."
Just then a low growl sounds throughout the room, signaling the alpha just entered. Scott signals for Avery and Stiles to run, and they do. They don't make it very far though before Stiles stops them.
"Alright, we have to do something." He commands.
"Like what exactly?" Avery asks looking at him expectantly.
"I don't know. Kill it, hurt it, put mental anguish on it. Something." Stiles says then glances into the medium sized room filled with a row of lockers, some tools and a couple ladders.
Of course Avery has no idea what Stiles plan is when he takes out his keys but she doesn't try to stop him. Stiles jingles his keys around then throws them into the attached room. As the alpha rounds the corner Stiles shields Avery by wrapping his arms around her and pushing them into the darkness. Scott stumbles back with them and the alpha runs into the room. Stiles jumps off Avery and throws himself into the door and closes it.
"The desk. Come on, the desk!" Stiles yells to Scott and Avery. Together they push the desk in front of the door making it impossible to open and the alpha definitely tries. The three of them look at each other with big smiles on their faces. They might not die tonight after all.
"Come on get across." Stiles beckons Scott and Avery over.
"You first." Avery says nudging Scott.
"Why me?" Scott asks back turning to her.
"Because I'm a girl and incase you guys have forgotten I'm in heels and skinny jeans." Scott and Avery look down at her outfit. All though very cute the over sized beige sweater, jegings that look like skinny jeans, and lace up black ankle boots, toped with the black bowler hat don't make for a very good running for her life outfit.
"Fine." Scott says and scoots over the desk. It takes Avery a bit longer to slid across due to her outfit but she makes it soon enough.
"What are you doing?" Scott asks making Avery turn around and see Stiles leaning in over the desk.
"I just want to get a look at it." Stiles replies back
"Are you crazy?!" Scott asks back.
"Look it's trapped ok? It's not going to get out." Stiles says then gets onto the desk and looks in through the window. "Yeah that's right we got you-" Stiles says starting to instigate the alpha.
"Shut up" Avery and Scott say together.
"No. I'm not scared of this thing." Just as he says it though a giant paw/hand thing hits the small-wired window and drags across causing Stiles to jump down off the desk and take a few steps back. "I'm not scared of you! Ok? Because you're in there and we're out here!" He shouts back and Avery brings a hand to her forehead accepting death.
"You're not going any-" But before Stiles could finish his sentence there's a crash in the ceiling and the panels start to weigh down and break apart.
"He's in the ceiling!" Avery says and punches Stiles in the arm before turning on her heels and running off.
"Wait do you hear that?" Scott says suddenly stopping the other two.
"What?" Avery asks straining her ears to hear something.
"It sounds like a phone ringing." Scott says back. Instinctively Avery whips out her phone and sees she has a bunch of missed calls form Lydia, Allison, Jake, and even Jackson, all reminding her about their group date tonight. But her phone's on silent so it can't be hers that Scott is hearing.
"Not mine." She declares back.
"No, I know that ring… It's Allison's phone." Scott says a look of panic crosses over his face and Avery has one too. The last place she wants her best friend to be right now would be an alpha infested school basically doomed to die. "Avery, give me your phone." Avery hands it over without protesting. While Scott calls Allison, Stiles turns to Avery.
"Hey. I just wanted to say thanks for that badass chain thing you did back there." He says rubbing the back of his neck and rolling back onto his heels. Avery has to admit that she loves when he does that.
"Oh… you're welcome." She says back slowly. "It's about time all that movie watching paid off." She chuckles humorlessly.
"Right, movies, yeah." He laughs back awkwardly as well and Avery dies a little inside. She had no idea why this conversation got all weird but she mentally blames Stiles for just being himself.
"Come on we have to meet Allison in the lobby." Scott tosses Avery her phone and they take off running yet again. Scott leads the way and when he bursts through the doors he immediately starts talking to Allison.
"Why did you come? What are you doing here?" He asks walking up to her.
"Because you asked me to." She says with a confused look on her face.
"I asked you to?" He looks just as confused as Allison does.
"Why do I get the feeling you didn't send this message?" Allison asks holding up her phone.
"Because I didn't." Scott says back.
"Did you drive here?" Stiles asks interrupting the puzzled couple.
"Jackson and Jake did," Allison replies back.
"Jackson's here?!" Scott says obviously not happy about the information.
"And Lydia. What's going on? Who sent this text?" Allison asks finally having enough with all the weirdness. "Avery, what are you doing here?" She says at last acknowledging Avery's presence. Luckily Allison's phone starts to ring saving Avery from a last minute excuse. "Where are you?" Allison asks and less then a second later Lydia Jackson and Jake all burst through the door.
"Avery?" Almost all three of them say at exactly the same time.
"Wow. You guys sound like a doo wop group." Avery says trying to lighten the mood. Only Stiles and her smile though making for a very poor conversation easer.
"Whatever. Can we go now?" Lydia says brushing past Jackson and Jake. Avery's about to say yes when the ceiling starts to creak and bend.
"Run!" Scott shouts and none of them hesitate to follow suit.
Avery risks a look back and sees the alpha fall to the floor from the ceiling. Suddenly Avery gets a very powerful burst of speed from all the adrenaline pumping through her veins. They burst through a set of double doors and the boy's set to work immediately on barricading them in while everyone else starts to talk.
"Scott, we can't be here." Stiles says.
"What was that thing? Scott what was that?" Allison asks pacing back and forth.
"Why did it come from the ceiling?" Lydia asks just as freaked out as Allison.
"Just help me! Stack the chairs over there!" Scott shouts back.
"Guys! Can you just wait a second?! You guys listen to me! Guys?! Stiles talking!" Stiles says trying to get everyone's attention. Out of everyone in that room Avery wanted to hear what Stiles had to say most so she intervened.
"HEY! Stiles has something to say! So if you could stop building your little fort and pay attention for five seconds that would be great… thanks." She shouts over all the noise getting her some pretty dirty looks from the group to which she responds with a shrug.
"Ok nice work! Really beautiful job everyone! Now what should we do about the twenty foot wall of windows?!" He turns to the windows and gestures wildly. Avery's grateful that what he had to say was good because she would look like a bitch if it weren't.
"Can someone please explain to me what's going on? Because I'm freaking out here and I'd like to know why. Scott?" Allison asks turning to Scott. He just paces away over to a table and looks like he's about to have a panic attack. Everyone in the group turns to Avery and Stiles.
"Somebody killed the janitor." Stiles finally gives up as an explanation.
"What?" Is all Lydia can get out.
"Yeah the janitor is dead." Stiles confirms once more.
"What is he talking about? Is this a joke?" Allison asks mostly to Scott.
"Who killed him?" Jackson finally speaks up.
"No this was supposed to be over since the mountain lion was killed." Lydia looks scared and small as the words leave her lips.
"Don't you get it? There was no mountain lion." Jackson shoots back at Lydia, getting Avery a little mad.
"Who was it? What does he want? What's happening? Scot?!" Allison yells.
"I, I, I don't know but if we go out there he's going to kill us." Scott stammers out.
"Us? He's going to kill us?" Lydia looks so scared it throws Avery off. She's so used to Lydia being the collected and controlled one that this shocks her.
"Who? Who is it?!" Allison insists.
"Its Derek. It's Derek Hale." Scott says after a moment.
Avery and Stiles share a look of shock. Right as Avery is about to rebute the horrible accusations made against Derek a hand claps over her mouth and spins her around. She turns to see Stiles giving her the 'don't say a word' look. To which she gives the 'this is wrong' look. He responds with the 'yes but it's what Scott wants so just go with it' look and she gives the 'fine but I don't want anything to do with this' eye roll. He removes his hand from her mouth slowly like he doesn't want to spook her into biting him or something.
"You're lucky. The last person who did that to me got a good licking." She says before turning back around to join the conversation.
"…It's been Derek the whole time." Avery assumes she missed part of the conversation due to her silent one with Stiles but she can basically imagine how it goes. Everyone asks if Scott's sure it's Derek to which he replies yes then he continues on and blames Derek for all the murders that took place in Beacon Hills so far. "He's in here with us and if we don't get out now then he's going to kill us too." Scott goes on.
"Call the cops." Jake says turning to Stiles.
"No," Stiles says with a shrug.
"What do you mean no?" Jackson asks.
"I mean no. Do you want to hear it in Spanish? No" Stiles repeats making Avery smiles to herself. "Look Derek attacked three people we don't know what he's armed with."
"Your dad is armed with an entire sheriffs department, call him" Jackson insists.
"I'm calling." Lydia announces and dials the number.
Of course it doesn't work though. Apparently somebody tipped off the police station saying that some kids at the high school will be prank calling them tonight. Lydia hangs up the phone quickly.
"They said that if I called again then they would arrest me."
"Then call again." Allison says bringing her hand to her mouth.
"They won't trace your cell and they'd send a car to your house before they send one here."Stiles offers up.
"Why is Derek doing this? Why is he killing anyone?" Allison asks continuing her freak out. Avery glances to Scott since it was his idea in the first place to blame an innocent dead person.
"Why is everyone looking at me?" Scott asks taken back.
"Is he the one who sent her the text?" Lydia asks in an accusing tone
"No, I don't know." Scott shoots back too loud to seem guiltless.
"Ok, why don't we ease back on the throttle a little, uh?" Stiles adds in pulling Scott off to the side.
"What are we going to do?" Jake says finally contributing to the conversation.
"New plan. Stiles calls his useless dad and tells him to send someone with a gun and decent aim. Are we good with that?" Jackson says suddenly aggressive and walking slowly over to Stiles.
"He's right. Tell him the truth if you have to. Just call him."
"I'm not watching my dad get eaten alive." Stiles says simply in a whisper only Scott and Avery can hear. Avery understands why he won't call his dad; if it was her, she'd do the same
"Give me the phone." Jackson lunges for it but instead handing it over like Avery thought Stiles would, he punches Jackson in the face. Allison shouts Jackson's name and runs over to him to make sure he's ok, while Lydia stands frozen in place. Avery on the other is a little distracted since Jake thinks that invitation for a fight is extended to him. Jake starts towards Stiles but Avery cuts in and pushes against his chest to try and get him to stop.
"Jake, stop. Let it go." Avery says desperately trying to keep Stiles face intact… at least his brown eyes. Instead of listening to her though he just shoves her out of the way and she hits the floor hard.
"Jake, I'm fine. Let it go man." Jackson says and just like that Jake stops like an obedient attack dog.
No one but Stiles noticed Avery's fall since they were all focused on Jackson. Stiles hurries over to help her up though, which is more than enough for her.
"Thanks." They both say at the same time.
"That was pretty bad ass Stilinski." She says with a smile while rubbing the shoulder she fell on.
"Are you ok, Avery?" He asks looking deep into her eyes to make sure she won't lie.
"I'm fine Stiles. It's just a bruise. Honestly it's my fault for thinking I could stop him," She shrugs.
"Ok…" He responds back hesitantly before whipping out his phone and calling his dad. He gets his voicemail but leaves a message saying we need help at the school.
There's a bang at the barricaded door and all of the teenagers turn in unison to look at the door.
"The kitchen the door leads to the stairwell." Stiles says calmly.
"Which only goes up." Scott retorts.
"Better then here. Lets go!" Avery shouts and takes off sprinting.
They run up the stairs each as fast as they can go then sprint down the hall ending up in an empty chemistry class.
"We can't stay in here. That door isn't going to keep that thing out." Avery whispers to Stiles and Scott as everyone else starts to freak out.
"What about that door? We can get to the roof and go down the fire escape." Scott sums up.
"That's a deadbolt." Stiles says quickly shooting down that idea.
"The janitor has keys."
"You mean his dead body has it."
"I could get them. I can find him by scent, by blood. Come back here and we could get out." Scott replies back with the whole group now paying attention to the conversation.
"Scott you can't do that. You don't even have a weapon." Avery tries to reason with him even though she can tell it's hopeless.
"I have this." He says picking up a one of those pointer finger sticks.
"What are you going to do? Poke him death." Avery replies back shaking her head.
"There's got to be a better weapon."
"There is." Lydia says gesturing to the cabinet full of chemicals.
"What are we going to do throw acid on him."
"No, like a fire bomb. In there is everything we need to make a self igniting Molotov cocktail." Lydia says something that doesn't quiet mean anything to Avery other then 'I'm a genius and can help save the day.'
"A what?" Jake asks thoroughly confused.
"A Molotov cocktail." She sounds out it again but Avery doesn't catch it the second time either.
"What's that?" Jake asks continuing to question her.
"What? I read it somewhere." She says as everyone gives her suspicious looks. She peeks at Avery with a pleading glance. She knows that Avery is probably the only person here who knows her secret about being a genius and is the only person who's annoying enough to distract people.
"Does it matter what it is? As long as it keeps Scott safe on his little suicide mission lets let the lady work. I seriously doubt any of us could understand what it is anyways." Avery snaps out harsher then she meant to.
"Right… Well we don't have a key for that either." Stiles says slowly. Avery walks over to the glass casing and puts her elbow through it, finally letting her anger blow over. She knows she gets angry easily, she gets that from her dad, and that absolutely terrifies her. Her anger petrifies her more then any other part of she herself.
As Lydia gets to work Allison and Scott talk while Avery stands off to the side and tries not to get in the way. Jake walks toward Avery with an angry look on his face.
"What was that all about?" He asks looking down at her with a scowl on his face.
"What do you mean?" Avery shoots back still a little frustrated about him pushing her to the floor.
"That stuff about me not being able to understand her even if she explains it."
"God Jake, it's not that big of a deal."
"Why are you always such a bitch? You're the one who made me come here in the first place."
"I didn't make you come. In fact the doors right there. Feel free to go out into the killer infested hallway. Now if you'll excuse me I have to talk to Scott before he kills himself." She glares back at him and for a second he looks furious enough to punch. Of course he doesn't though and she walks off right before Scott walks through the door.
"Wait up, Sparky. I want to come with." She says to Scott right as he's about to reach for the doorknob with one hand while holding the chemical mixture in the other.
"You can't come with me."
"Why not? I can't just sit here and do nothing while my friends life's are at stake."
"Avery if you came with me and something happened to you. Allison would hate me. Stiles would never talk to me again. Lydia would make my life a living hell and Jackson and Jake would murder me. And if Derek is somehow alive I'm pretty sure he'd kill me too. And on top of all that I wouldn't be able to live with myself. It'd be better for your health and mine if you just stay." He says back placing a hand on her shoulder.
"But-" She tries to get out but he speaks before she can.
"Avery, stay. Please." Scott looks deep into her eyes.
"I thought puppies are supposed to obey commands not give them." She mumbles.
"So you'll stay?" He replies with a small smile.
"Fine. I'll stay." She rolls her eyes then raps Scott in a quick hug. "Be safe. I can't handle another death right now." She pulls away quickly then pats him on the shoulder before walking over to the wall and taking a seat on the floor. They all watch Scott leave and after a minute Stiles joins her on the floor.
"You asked him to go with didn't you?" Stiles says with a sideward glance toward her.
"How'd you know?" She asks back bringing the hands down from her face that she doesn't remember putting there.
"It's just who you are. You can't help it." He shrugs.
"What do you mean?"
"You have to help people. You're just a good person like that." He smiles without looking at her and she glances at him quickly.
"I'm really not. I'm just…" she starts to second guess herself, "scared." She croaks out finally.
"Not of the alpha though, if you were scared you wouldn't be willing to go back out there and take on an alpha. So what are you scared of?" She hates how right he is.
She's not afraid of the situation but being useless in the situation. Suddenly being human just isn't enough. At least not the type of human she is. She already lost her sister and wasn't able to do anything about it, then her dad, now Derek. If she loses anyone else tonight she just might break. Especially if she makes it out of this completely unharmed. It's like someone just decided to release a plague on everyone but her so she can just sit back and watch the people who mean the most to her die and do nothing about it.
"Nothing. I'm not afraid of anything. I'm fine Stiles. Really." She jumps up off the floor and walks away before he can call her bluff. She sits in one of the desks at the back of class and stares down at her hands. Someone takes the seat next to her and she turns to see Jake.
"Hey," He says simply. She mumbles something about not being in the mood. "I just wanted to apologize for what I said… and for pushing you earlier. I was just so mad I didn't know what came over." She glances at him and sees the sadness in his eyes. Maybe she should give Jake a second chance. He's sturdy and normal. She could use some normal.
"It's fine. I was mad too... I'm sorry for what I said." She says back. He grins back at her and her stomach flutters as he takes her hand.
"We'll get through this. And when we do I'm going to take you out on a really nice date tomorrow." He says smoothly.
"I'd like that a lot." She replies back with a small smile. Just then Jackson keels over as rumbling noise sounds through the school.
"I have to check on Jackson." Jake says squeezing her hand tightly then gets up and goes to Jackson. Stiles takes the newly open seat next to her and for some reason looks frustrated.
"What's wrong?" She asks slowly.
"Avery, that guy just threw you to the floor and called you a bitch. Why are you even talking to him?" He huffs then leans back in his chair and runs a hand threw his hair.
"He apologized for all of that." She responds back quietly.
"Yeah, a year later. And he shouldn't have done any of that in the first place."
"I was the one who got in the way and I started the argument. I egged him on. It was my fault. Plus he's making it up to me." She argues back.
"I… You can't… Whatever." He shakes his head then opens his mouth again like he's going to say something but closes it obviously thinking it's not worth his time. Avery suddenly feels small.
"I… I want you to know that back in locker I…" She wants to tell him that that moment didn't mean everything was different now or that things have to be weird or change but she couldn't finish. "I wanted to thank you for pulling me in when I froze."
"Oh, no problem. Anytime." He hesitates for a moment but nods then gets up and walks off.
She moans before placing her head down on the desk. She just wants to go home. She wants to eat a ton of ice cream then fall go to bed feeling really guilty about eating all that ice cream. And then feel even worse the next day when she steps on the scale. Is that too much to ask?
Avery places her arms under her head and tries to calm down while everyone else is still freaking out. She needs to breath. In. Out. In. Out. It was working fine until Derek crosses her mind and her breath picks up. She has an ache in her heart and a single tear falls down her face. She whips it quietly and reminds herself that they weren't really friends. Even though it doesn't help much the police sirens outside sure do. Avery jumps to her feet and runs to the window.
She jumps up and down to giddy to stand still. Next thing she knows she's being wrapped up in a hug by Stiles and she doesn't hesitate for a second to hug back. She reaches up on her tiptoes and whispers in his ear.
"Thanks for calling. I don't know if I could have done that." She says then pulls out of the hug and rolls back down onto the balls of her feet.
"I couldn't let anything happen to you… Or anyone else I mean, as in the group. I didn't want anyone to get hurt or die or-" He starts to ramble on making Avery smile.
"Stiles, thanks, whatever the reason, thanks." She says and he nods back rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. The paramedics are checking out the group of teenagers a couple of minutes later in front of the school.
"I don't need a blanket, I'm not cold." Avery says trying to shrug off the scratchy material the semi cute paramedic draped on her.
"You're in shock. Keep it the blanket on or we'll have to take you down to the hospital and sedate you." He shoots back obviously not up for Avery's banter.
"You know what? Suddenly I'm very cold. Thanks." She is in no mood to take a trip down to the hospital so she shoots him a big sarcastic smile gets up and walks away over to the Sheriff, Stiles, and Scott.
"—All we found was this hat in the basement." She walks up just in time to see the Sheriff holding her bowler hat.
"Oh! That's mine!" She says and rips it out of his hands like it's the most important thing in the world. Stiles shoots her a funny look and she shrugs. "I got it on sale."
"Ok…" Sheriff responds back unsure of what to do with that girly bit of information. "Well as I was saying, we're going to keep looking for Derek Hale and the missing janitor. Stiles, Scott, Avery, wait for one of the police officers to take you home. I don't want to hear about any of you getting into any more trouble." The sheriff looks at each of them individually.
"Yeah sure." Scott says then runs off. Avery looks over to where he goes and sees his target is Allison. Avery just shakes her head. She knows that Allison needs time away from all of them to just breath. Especially Scott.
"Uh Sheriff, is it ok if Jake gives me a ride home? I don't want my parents freaking out about the cop car." Avery asks turning to the Sheriff just as he's about to walk away. He turns back to her and looks a little surprised. He glances between Stiles and Avery and nods slowly while still looking at Stiles. She peeks at Stiles out of the corner of her eye and sees he's blushing slightly, out of anger or bashfulness she wasn't sure.
"Ok well I'll see you around Stiles." She says handing him her paramedic blanket after the Sheriff walks off. She pats him on the shoulder and is about to go when he takes hold of her hand. She's caught off guard and stops in her tracks.
"I just… I wanted to make sure you're alright." Stiles stumbles out as though he wanted to ask a different question but thinks better of it.
"I'm fine Stiles. Are you ok?" She asks leaning a little closer to him as though he was about to tell her a secret.
"Yeah! I'm fine." He says way too happy.
"Avery! Are you coming or not?!" Jake yells from his car.
"Oh I should go." She says and he lets go of her hand. She hates that feeling of his warm hand leaving hers, she's not sure why but she really does hate it. Just as she's driving off in Jake's car she looks over her shoulder and sees Scott and Stiles in a particularly scary conversation that Avery finds herself wishing she was apart off.
