Disclaimer: Sadly I did not write Teen Wolf.
Sorry for not writing in a while! I hope you guys like it!
Avery has always loved fairytales (she blames Disney). The idea of someone falling head over heels for another person and just knowing in a single moment that they were meant to be has always mesmerized. They would share true loves first kiss and all the bad things in the world would melt away. That's all she wants, true love.
Preferably that true love would be prince charming with a beautiful white horse charging into battle to save her… but she'll settle for nice car for now.
Sadly fairytales belong in books not in life. Or even if they do show up in some lucky persons life it sure wouldn't be hers. She knows it deep down too, but she just wants something special. Something that could last forever… is that too much to ask for?
"So are we actually going to talk or…" Derek begins to ask.
"What the hell were you thinking? 'If you help me find him, I'll help you kill him.'" She mimics him in a deep voice.
"I don't talk like that." He shoots back quickly.
"Scott is not a killer. He can't just kill an alpha." She says as she pulls up to Derek house and turns off her car engine.
"But you can? You're a killer?" Derek throws back.
"I would become one… for Quinn." She tenses up saying her sisters name out loud. "What is it with full moons? Do all werewolves turn into complete assholes or is it just you and Scott?" She huffs bringing her hands down on the wheel.
"What did he do to get you so angry?" He asks not really invested in the conversation.
"It's more like what he said." She waits but he doesn't respond or get out so she continues. "He brought up my dad—said that I wasn't worth being loved. Oh, and he kissed Lydia. Lydia! Stiles has been in love with her forever and he just goes and kisses her. Then he has the audacity to make fun of me because I've never kissed anyone." She laughs humorlessly.
"You've never kissed anyone?" He asks sounding genuinely surprised.
"No, I haven't. Why is that so hard to believe? It's not like I'm some Victoria Secret model. I'm average on a good day, but now Jake is cheating on me because I won't kiss him. Is it really such a horrible thing that I want my first kiss to be with someone I actually like? Someone who cares about me, and would do anything for me?" She sits there for a moment embarrassed by the silence she receives.
She finally gets up enough courage to look over at Derek and is surprised to see that he's already looking at her. It suddenly becomes very quiet and everything is still. Then he unexpectedly reaches out with one hand, cups the back of her neck, and closes the gap between them. Avery barely gets the chance to close her eyes before Derek's lips land on hers. When he pulls away from her, her eyes are wide in shock. She leans back in her seat, unsure how to react.
"Wait, that's not how that was supposed to go." Avery stumbles out causing Derek to raise a curious eyebrow. "That's not fair; I didn't even know what was going on. I would have…" Her sentence tatters off as an idea grows in her head.
"It's not like you know what you're doing anywa-" Derek begins to say but is stopped short when Avery grabs him and pulls him into another kiss. But unlike the last one, this one was more passionate; it was deep and warmed her entire body. She pulls away slowly and sees its Derek's turn to be surprised.
"For the record, I'm only accepting the second one as my first kiss." She states as she nods her head lightly. Derek turns his head to face her and narrows his eyes. Avery meets his gaze and lowers her voice to a soft whisper. "Okay?"
"Okay." Derek agrees quietly.
"And I would really appreciate it if you could—" Avery starts as she looks out the car window.
"Don't worry. I don't have any reason to tell Stiles." Derek sighs as he grabs the door handle and pulls on it lightly to pop it open.
"Thanks," Avery says.
"No problem," Derek responds. He steps out of the car with one foot but Avery grabs his arm before he can leave.
"And uh can we just skip the 'what did it mean' talk." Avery swallows as her eyes flicker up to meet his. "I know it was just a favor."
"You couldn't hold onto the hope that you'd find your knight in shining armor forever. Sometimes you just have to settle for an ordinary awkward first kiss like the rest of the world." Derek shrugs.
"And sometimes you settle for a hot twenty year old werewolf." Avery mimics his shrug with a smile pulling up the corners of her mouth. Derek throws her one of his renowned dirty looks causing Avery to laugh. "I'm joking… calm down."
"Goodnight," Derek mumbles.
"Night," Avery replies and Derek shuts the car door behind him. She clenches her teeth, tightening her jaw as she watches Derek disappear into his house.
It takes her a moment to get her mind in focus but once she does she starts her car once more and drives home. Her mind starts to reel as she drives. Her biggest worry is Stiles, she doesn't want this to be a repeat of Scott and Lydia for him but she refuses to lie to him too. She decides there to tell him the truth, the only decision is when. The next time she sees him she'll tell him.
The only problem with that brilliant idea is that the next time she sees Stiles it's with Scott and they're speeding down the road in Derek's Camaro. She's not ashamed of what happened so she has no problem acting like her normal annoying self in the back seat while Scott drives.
"You might want to drive a little faster." Stiles says tapping his leg. He peeks over his shoulder and looks out the back window to make sure Kate Argent is still following them.
"Yeah, this snails pace wouldn't have been a problem if you would've let me drive." Avery says with a sigh.
"If we would have let you drive you would have gotten us killed." Stiles replies with a smile dancing across his face.
"My dear man I take great offence to that. My driving lies completely within the necessary laws… except when necessary," Avery responds.
"Are you kidding me? You speed on a daily bases," Stiles laughs.
"I see the speed limit signs as more of suggestions. Plus it looks like we could use some speeding right now." Avery says gesturing out the back window to the car following them at matched speed.
"Faster?" Scott asks finally annoyed with the ongoing conversation around him.
"Yes!" Avery and Stiles say together.
After the night of the full moon Scott came to Avery and basically begged for forgiveness. They still have obvious tension since it's hard for Avery to forgive people but when it comes down to it, they're friends.
"Ok, Scott, I don't think you're grasping the whole idea of the car chase here." Stiles says as Aunty Argent speeds up behind them.
"If I go any faster I'll kill us," Scott replies tightening the wheel with and iron grip.
"Better then them killing us!" Avery adds in lightly tapping Scotts arm to make him go faster.
"Fine!" Scott replies and slams his foot onto the gas pedal.
"That's what I'm talking about!" Avery says her face breaking out into a huge grin. She peeks over her shoulder and sees that they loose their tail that was following close behind them.
Stiles checks the police radio that he stole from his dad to see where Derek is. Apparently Derek's run from the police led him to the iron ward where their now headed to. They screech up next to Derek who crouched behind a big construction machine. Stiles flings the door open and urges for Derek to run into the car. Bullets fly into the floor around him as he jumps into the car. Stiles gets into the back seat with Avery making for an awkwardly tight fit.
"What part of laying low don't you understand?" Scott asks obviously frustrated with Derek.
"Damn it! I almost had him" Derek doesn't bother to respond to Scotts comment and rather moves on with the conversation.
"Who?" Avery questions further.
"The Alpha?" Stiles adds on to Avery's comment, completing her thought.
"Yeah! He was right in front of me when the freaking police showed up!" Derek shouts over the sound of the engine with frustration.
"Wow, hey, they're just doing their job." Stiles says in defense for his dad.
"Yeah, thanks to someone who decided to make the most wanted fugitive in the entire state." Derek says mostly to Scott.
"Hey, don't hold grudges—they cause wrinkles." Avery adds, making Derek shoot her a dirty look and Stiles smile.
"How did you find the alpha anyways?" Stiles asks leaning forward. Derek
"Can you try to trust us for at least like half a second?" Scott says bringing his hands down on the steering wheel gently out of irritation.
"Yeah… all of us." Stiles adds but retreats after Derek's throws out another famous deathly stare. "Or just them, I'll be back here."
"Look, the last time I talked to my sister she was close to figuring something out. She found two things, the first was a guy named Harris-"
"Our chemistry teacher?" Stiles interrupts as he leans forward temporarily to try and join the conversation.
"Why him?" Scott questions further.
"I don't know yet," Derek continues.
"What's the second thing your sister found out?" Avery asks.
"Some kind of symbol," Derek pulls out a piece of paper with a drawing of Allison's necklace on it. "Do know what this is?" Derek asks obviously noticing Avery and Scott's reaction.
"Yeah—it's Allison's necklace." Avery finally gets out after a moment of silence. "Look as exciting as this nights been I really have to get home and to work on my homework," Avery adds.
"Ok, we'll stop at your house first then." Scott says delicately as though he might shatter their friendship with the soft breeze.
The boys drop her off at her house less then twenty minutes later and that concludes her excitement for the night. She spends the few remaining hours of consciousness on homework and picking out her cloths for tomorrow. When she can't fight her eyes from slowly drooping down anymore she gets ready for bed and falls asleep with a heavy mind.
The next morning she wakes on time and gets dress quickly enough and grabs some breakfast out the door. As she drives to school her hands begin to shake. She has to try and save her relationship with Jake. Lydia would be happy and if Lydia's happy maybe she'll be happy after a while too—hopefully.
She pulls into the parking lot and sees Jake waiting by his car for her, just like she asked him to do the night before. She pulls into the spot one away from his car so they have a parking space sized gap between them. She gets out of the car and stumbles on her shoes as she makes her way around the car. Lucky for her Jake is too busy looking down at his phone to notice her ungraceful moment.
"Hey," She says rubbing her moist hands on her white dress. She digs her nails into her palms out of nervousness and sucks in a breath.
"Hey." He responds not bothering to look away from his phone. "What did you want to talk about?"
"I didn't really want to talk." She replies beginning to lose her patience. His eyes finally whip up and meet hers. She takes this as a good time to go for it… she reaches up on her tiptoes and her lips meet his.
She feels nothing.
Maybe she's just a bad judge since this is only her second kiss but honestly she thought she would feel something. She even felt a warmth flow through her when she kissed Derek and she has absolutely no romantic feelings for him whatsoever.
She kisses Jake only a moment longer before pulling away. Her eyes flutter open and she can see a smile spread across his face. She throws on a fake smile that she hopes is believable. She has to try for Lydia.
"That was a nice surprise." He says smiling down at her.
"Thanks…" Silence drags on between them and Avery has a sudden urge to fill in the blank. "So I was thinking that after the game tonight we could go out or something?"
"Oh… um I actually have to study with Paige at her house tonight, but maybe tomorrow." He says and glances at the phone in his hand awkwardly, and for some reason that pushes Avery over the edge.
"Seriously? You're still going to cheat on me with her?" Avery crosses her arms and lets out a humorless laugh. "I thought it was me! I thought it was because I wouldn't kiss you that you started hooking up with her!"
"Avery this is crazy, I'm not—" he begins to say but she cuts him off before he can continue his lie.
"Don't you dare lie to my face. The only reason I'm here is for Lydia. I thought I could make something work and then maybe she would get off my back but I see now your just a selfish jerk; a conceded, narcissistic ass, who's a waste of my time. I hope you burn in—" But this time it's his turn to cut her off but not with words, rather a blow to the face right on her left cheek bone.
Avery stumbles back holding her face in her hands. Everything falls into place. It's just like her mom when she was with her dad. Her dad would be a jerk then make it up to her and repeat the cycle all over again and that's exactly what's been going on here. She fell for it just like her mom did and now she's standing in the parking lot of her school with a swelling cheek… and she's pissed.
"Oh my god Avery I'm so sorry! I didn't mean—" He starts but of course she doesn't wait for him to finish. She walks up to him and drives her knee into his groin then elbows him in the face when he bends down.
"If you ever touch me or any other girl like that again I'll do the world a favor and make you infertile." Avery whispers in his ear then shoves his shoulders back making him fall to the floor.
She has nowhere to go so she jumps back in her car and takes off. This is her first time ditching school and she doesn't know where to go. She ends up at the store and gets the biggest tub of vanilla they have, then she drives to the pizza store and picks up a large pizza with enough fries to feed five people on the side… this day is a junk food day.
When she gets home she runs up to her room changes out of her dress and into some comfy jeans and a baggy old shirt, dumps a bunch of candy and chocolate syrup in the vanilla ice cream and tears away at the food. She's probably about a quarter of the way through when her phone starts ringing and she sees it's Stiles.
"Hello?" Stiles asks sounding extremely annoyed.
"Stiles what's wrong? And what's with the sassy tone?" Avery's asks not in the mood for any more drama.
"Where have you been all day? I saw you in the parking lot this morning… kissing Jake… but then you disappeared for the rest of the day." Avery can hear his hurt tone as Stiles huffs out the last part like it tastes bad in his mouth. Avery laughs humorlessly.
Of course he would see me kiss Jake but not the part where he punched me in the face, she thinks to herself shaking her head.
"Let me guess you walked away before the whole hitting me in the face part right?" Avery shoots back a little too harsh.
"Wait what?" Stiles sounds genuinely surprised and hurt and a million other things.
"Yeah, Jake told me he was still going to see Paige and I said he was an ass then he hit me and I left. Now I'm home eating ice cream and junk food."
"I didn't know." He says finally breaking the on going silence.
"I figured. So, what did you want?" Avery replies quickly, wanting this conversation to be over already.
"I, uh, I had an idea and I was wondering if you could meet me at my house and help?" He sounds sad and a bit confused.
"Fine… I'll be there in five minutes." Avery hangs up the phone before Stiles has the chance to respond.
Avery throws on a sweatshirt and some shoes then jumps in her car and heads off. She doesn't have any cover up for her bruised face so she makes a mental note to stop by the store to pick some up. She arrives at Stiles house and can see he's waiting for her by his car. His eyes widen as he sees the swollen bruise blossoming on her cheek.
"I'm going to kill him." Stiles says pulling her into a much needed hug.
"It's ok. He looks worse then I do, believe me." She responds with a shrug after they pull apart.
"I do... I'm sorry he was you're first kiss." Stiles says after a moment without looking at her.
"He wasn't." Avery closes her eyes and peeks through when the sentence finally leaves her lips. "Derek was… it didn't mean anything and he was just doing me a favor."
"Derek?" He backs away form her and brings his hands down on his legs. "Derek?!"
"Better then Jake, right?" Avery states wrapping her arms around herself.
"Seriously Avery? Derek?!"
"Yes, Stiles, Derek! He's my friend and he understood my problem and fixed it for me." She says beginning to gain her temper back.
"What problem?"
"I couldn't keep waiting for prince charming! You—he wasn't going to be kissing me anytime soon so Derek did." She digs her nails into the palm of her hand and can't believe she basically said she wanted Stiles to be her first kiss, hopefully he didn't notice.
"Wait, did you say I wasn't—" He begins to say with hopeful eyes but Avery cuts him off.
"Stiles, can we talk about this later? My face needs ice and cover up fast." She waves her hands through the conversation making the last of it disappear.
"Sure." He says looking slightly defeated. "I can help with the ice but the makeup thing is on you." He leads the way into the house and laughs slightly at his own joke making Avery smile.
"That's fine, I'll stop by the store after this and pick some up."
"Sounds good. Here's the ice. Come on we can go to my room and get to work." He passes her the bag he just filled with crushed ice then runs up the steps with her close behind.
When they get upstairs they head straight to the computer where they hear Stiles dad shout to him.
"Hey Stiles!" The Sheriff calls from downstairs.
"Yo da—da—Derek?" Stiles sentences takes a left turn that Avery did not see coming. She looks at Stiles and follows his gaze to see Derek standing in the corner. Stiles runs to the door leaving Avery and Derek alone.
Their gaze holds and they have a complete silent conversation while Stiles talks to his dad out in the hallway.
What are you doing here? She asks silently with wide eyes bringing her hands up.
What happened to your cheek? He responds narrowing his eyes and gesturing to her face.
Nothing, She conveys with a shake of her head. To which he responds with a menacing step forward. Fine, I'll tell you later. She gives in finally gesturing for him to back down.
"Stiles are you ok?" Avery hears the Sheriff say just behind the slightly closed door, catching the end of their conversation.
"Yeah dad I'm fine." Stiles responds in a not so cool tone.
"Is someone in there with you?" She can tell the Sheriff is about to walk in the room and investigate so she runs to the door and flings it open just enough to see her and the seemingly empty room.
"Hey Sheriff, what's up?" She huffs out slightly out of breath from the jump for the door.
"Hey Avery… what happened to your face?" He asks suspiciously.
"Wow, I mean I didn't get that much sleep but I thought I looked fine today… Oh you mean my nose? I would blame my dad for that if anything, I have his nose. See I thought it might be too big but it's hard to tell. My profile makes my nose look huge but head on it looks fine. It's all about the angles you know." She shrugs at the end and adds a big smile.
"I meant the bruise on your cheek." The Sheriff responds with a series face.
"Oh, well you see that is a side affect of texting and walking. I ran straight into a pole without even looking. Honestly I'm starting to understand the law against texting and driving… then again it could just be me. I tend to let my mind wander… like the other day I was writing an essay about pollution and ended up talking about cheeseburgers." Avery silently curses herself for her rambling.
"Cheeseburgers... right. I don't have to worry about you two right?" The Sheriff questions as he did once before.
"No," Stiles responds a bit too quickly.
Ow! Wait why did that hurt so much? I shouldn't care that Stiles said no because that was the correct answer right? Unless it wasn't the right answer for me. Maybe I do secretly like Stiles… who am I kidding of course I like Stiles, I've always liked Stiles. It's those damn brown eyes… They ruin everyone else in the world for me. Avery thinks to herself taking a quick glance at the big brown eyes that are already staring at her.
"Well I have to go but I'll see you two at the game." Stiles' dad gives Avery a quick wave then turn and walks away.
"Why the quick response?" Avery asks before she could stop herself.
"What do you mean?" Stiles responds knowing exactly what she's talking about. She finds herself growing angry with her feelings towards Stiles and it shows in her tone.
"Nothing, lets just get this over with." Avery states brushing past Stiles with her heart racing.
She can't help it anymore… she knows that she wants Stiles and it's killing her. But she can't think about that now. She has to push her feelings down yet again and tackle the problem in front of her. So she charges into the room with Derek inside and gets ready for another adventure.
