If he had known that death would come like a whisper, he might have embraced it earlier. But it was different experience, seeing his body while he was not in it. It was a different experience watching your dearest friend cry over your lifeless body and the only sort of comfort you could offer them was…well wasn't enough.
Merlin watched the scene with a morbid sense of curiosity. On one hand, he felt immeasurable guilt for leaving his young prince alone, but on the other hand, Arthur was alive and that was all that matter. Even if he'd only just managed to show his prince his deepest darkest secret, and leave him without an explanation. Merlin watched over Arthur, because it was his destiny to watch over the prat for all of eternity, dead or alive, Merlin knew his spirit wouldn't leave Arthur.
He would never see Avalon. As long as Arthur had breath in his body, Merlin would stay at his side. Never speaking, never truly hearing, never sleeping or eating, always following the prat wherever he went; he'd finally become Arthur's shadow.
