Katniss's POV

"Jessica," I feel someone lightly shake me.

"Mm," I groan and snuggle towards the direction where the warmth is at.

"Jessica," The person repeats, except its somehow closer and deeper.

"Hey, wake up," I hear Peeta's voice. It's really close to my ear.

My eyes snap open and I see that I'm lying on top of a strong body.

"I'm so sorry!" I get up and try to get away from him. My foot gets caught in the sheet, causing me to fall on the floor.

"Are you okay?!" Peeta yells in horror.

"I'm fine," I get up just as his hands touch my arms.

"Are you sure-" He begins.

"Yeah, Yeah, I'm fine," I scurry to the room I stay at.

I shut the door behind me before I run to the bathroom and close the door.

I fell asleep on the couch and must've moved in my sleep.

That was the most comfortable sleep I've had. The last time I felt that way was when my family was alive.

But this is all wrong. I fell asleep on Peeta. I wonder what he thinks of all this.

Does he think that I tried to have my way with him? That is the last thing I intended to happen.

"Jessica," I hear Peeta's muffled voice.

Slowly, I open the bathroom door and take small steps towards the window.

"I- Uh- just wanted to make sure you're alright," He says.

"I'm fine," I assure him.

"Okay, well, I- um- I'm going to make breakfast," He says." I'll call you when it's done."

"Okay," I say.

...

We've been eating in silence for five minutes and it's really awkward.

"Peeta, I'm really sorry that I was laying on you, I fell asleep and-" I begin.

"It's okay," He assures me.

"But-" I begin.

"It's okay, you didn't do anything wrong, we just fell asleep," He says.

"I just- I didn't want to give you the impression that- that I- that I forced myself on you- and-" I begin but he coughs on his egg.

"What?" He looks at me in shock.

"I- Just- um-" I turn red.

"Jessica, I've known you for three weeks and I know that you wouldn't do that," He says with a light chuckle.

"Um- well-" I stutter. If only the floor can just swallow me whole.

He chuckles and says," It's okay, it's past us."

"I'm also sorry about- the erm- the way-" I turn extremely red.

"About what?" He raises a brow.

"The way... The way I just kissed you on the cheek," I manage to speak." I'm really sorry about that, I don't know what got into me. It will never happen again."

"It's...It's okay," He says in a type of tone that I can't put a word to.

...

"Is there anything you want to do today?" He asks as I pass him wet dishes, so he can dry." I'm always taking you places and we never do what you want to."

"I don't really mind," I say.

"Come on, just name something and we'll do it," He says as I hand him the last plate.

"I- I don't really know," I say." Lets just do something you want."

"Nice try but it's your turn," He chuckles and puts the plate away.

"Peeta, I don't really know," I say and turn off the water.

I turn towards him and see that he's deep in thought.

"What is something you like to do?" He asks.

"I don't- I don't know," I shrug my shoulders.

"There has to be one thing you enjoy," He encourages.

"Well..." I try to think of a lie." I like...admiring shoes."

"Admiring shoes?" He raises a brow.

"I don't- I just don't know, okay!" I let my frustration get the best of me." I haven't done any of this in years! I've literally forgotten what I liked because of that!"

"Hey, calm down," He places his hands on my shoulders.

"I'm sorry," I reply in a soft tone." I shouldn't have yelled."

"It's fine to let it out here and there," He gives me a sad smile.

"I don't know what I want to do," I say.

"Why don't we go out for a walk and we'll progress from there?" He suggests.

"Okay," I agree.

...

"There's, also, a dress store down the block if your into shopping," He points out to a shop, not far from where we are, that's packed with women.

"Um...No..." I trail off.

A woman punches another woman in the face and takes a blue dress from her. I look closer and realize it's Johanna.

"Johanna!" I hear Peeta call.

Johanna looks up and puts up a finger. She takes out something from her purse and hands it to a woman who seems to be an employee.

As we approach her, I see that she has a beautiful blue dress that shines with every movement.

"Hey Peeta, Jessica," Johanna says as her eyes dart from Peeta to me." Did you finally have the balls to make a move on-"

"Johanna, um, that's a lovely dress," Peeta compliments with red cheeks.

"What are you talking about?" I ask her.

"Oh," Johanna says with a small smirk." You'll find out soon, I hope."

I look over at Peeta and see that he's sending some type of glare to Johanna as the red I his cheeks, worsens.

"Well, I have a hot date tonight, I'll see you love birds later," She walks away.

"We're not- We're not in a relationship!" I call after her.

"Whatever makes you two sleep at night," She laughs.

I turn to Peeta and he mumbles," Just ignore her."

"Okay," I decide to drop it. I guess it's just Johanna being herself.

We walk in silence as we continue to walk through town.

As we approach a bar, with a bunch of drunks leaning on the building, I inch closer towards Peeta.

"Hey, it's okay, they're nice guys," He says.

"They're drunk," I say.

The last time I was at a bar, was two years ago when Gale didn't come home for two days so I went out looking for him. His boss told me that he was last seen at the bar so I went there. I ended up being sexually harassed by a bunch of men, but at the end I found Gale passed out on a pool table.

"Peeta, How are you, boy?" I hear a slurred voice.

"I'm doing fine, Haymitch," Peeta says in a polite tone.

Haymitch has greasy hair that reaches his shoulders. He is probably as tall as Peeta in height, he has blue eyes, and reeks of bad odor.

"Who is this?" I hear another man asks. He has dark hair, green eyes, and he's probably about six foot two.

"Oh, this is Jessica; she's a friend," Peeta smiles.

"Hmph," Haymitch says." Same thing you said about-"

"Haymitch," Peeta glares at him.

"Just saying boy," He chuckles.

"Take care of this one," The man with dark hair puts his arm around Peeta.

"Umm..." I begin to trail off.

"He's always burning himself with one of them ovens of his," He says and drinks from his liquor.

"Oh?" I raise my brows.

"They're called accidents," Peeta says." Haymitch, chaff, it was nice to see both of you but Jessica and I have to go."

"Date?" Haymitch asks.

"No, we're just hanging out," I speak up.

Chaff laughs and throws an arm around me. I push all of my flashbacks away and try not to vomit of the smell of his breath.

"Chaff, I think that's-" Peeta begins.

"I like you, don't break his-" Chaff begins.

"We should get going," Peeta gets Chaff off me." I'll see you both around. Stop by the bakery once in a while so we know you're alive."

Haymitch laughs and says," Boy, this drunk is going to be around for a long time."

"Bye Haymitch, Chaff," I wave.

"Sweetheart," Haymitch raises his flask towards us and drinks.

"It's-" I begin.

"I know what it is but I'm calling you sweetheart," He says.

...

I take a drink of my tea and look out the window.

"I'm sorry about them, they're-" Peeta begins.

"It's okay," I say.

"- and Chaff, I know he made you uncomfortable and-" He begins.

"Peeta, it's fine," I give him a small smile.

"I just- I don't want you to feel uncomfortable-" He starts again.

"I wasn't," I say.

"Really?" He raises his brows.

"Yeah," I nod and take another drink of my tea.

I glance out the window and see a family having a picnic in the park.

My lips twitch into a smile when I see the two little girls being chased by their dad. It reminds me of Prim, Dad, Mom, and I. Before they died, we'd constantly have picnics in the meadow.

"Do you want to have a picnic?" I hear Peeta ask.

I glance over at him and say," What?"

"A picnic? Do you want to have one?" He asks.

"No, I just got lost in thought," I lie and focus on my tea.

"Are you sure? I'm known to throw the best picnics on earth," He smiles.

"Is that so?" I ask.

"My niece says I am," He cracks a grin and shrugs his shoulders.

I laugh and say," Okay, let's have a picnic."

...

After waiting for nearly ten minutes for Peeta in his truck, Peeta comes out his house with a blanket and a large picnic basket.

He places it in the backseat and says," I just need to make a quick stop at the bakery to pick up a few things."

He gets in the truck seconds later and starts it.

The whole way to the bakery, Peeta makes small talk about a big order he received the other day since I still refuse to talk about myself.

Peeta parks the truck in front of the bakery and says," I'll be back real fast! The keys are in the ignition so you can turn on the air conditioner if it gets too hot, if you want to listen to music you-"

"Peeta," I laugh." I'm fine."

"Okay, I'll be back," He tells me before he takes off in a sprint.

My laughter fades into small giggles until it's reduced to silence. I'm left with a small smile playing across my lips.

"Jessica, is that you?" I hear a female voice.

I look around and see Annie approaching the truck.

"It is you!" She races towards the passenger's window." How are you?"

"Fine," I say.

"I am so sorry about Glimmer, she can have her moments," Annie shoots me a sorrowful look.

"It's okay," My smile falters slightly.

The thought then sinks in. Glimmer thinks I have something going on with Peeta. Going to the picnic certainly won't help what she thinks.

"Are you okay?" She asks with her eye brows raised.

"Uh, yeah, I just, spaced out," I say.

Maybe it's not a very good idea to go on the picnic with Peeta. I don't want to give him trouble with Glimmer because of me.

"I'm back," Peeta rushes towards the truck with a bottle of...Wine?" Oh, hi Annie."

"Hi, Peeta," Annie smiles." Where are you both headed to?"

"Jessica and I are going to have a picnic at the park," He gets in the truck and places the wine in the basket.

Annie smiles and says," Have fun."

"We will," He chuckles." What are you doing? Finnick isn't here today."

"I was just about to go buy some groceries, I'm kind of running low," Annie says.

"Do you need a ride?" He asks.

"Oh, no, I'm fine," Annie smiles." I like to walk."

"Okay, have a good day Anne," He waves.

"Bye Jessica," Annie waves.

"Bye," I give her a small smile and wave.

...

"Is there something bothering you?" Peeta asks.

"No," I shake my head and help Peeta lay the blanket on the grass.

"Jessica, you can tell me anything," He says and looks me in the eye.

"I'm fine," I shoot him a smile.

"If you say so..." He trails off and grab the picnic basket.

...

I hear heels clicking, causing me to sit up and look back.

"Okay, that's the fifth time, what's going on," Peeta frowns.

"Nothing important," I say.

"Please," He pleads.

I scowl and say," I just... I don't want Glimmer to see me here with you. She's just going to give you a hard time and she's going to keep thinking I'm trying things on you!"

He stays silent for a moment but says," I could care less what Glimmer thinks. The only important thing is that we know what's real and what isn't."

"I guess your right," I mumble.

"Let's not think about Glimmer, we came out here to have fun," He gives me a joyful smile as he hands me a plate filled with food.

...

"Tell me something about you, you don't really talk about your interests," He says.

"I just don't like to," I take a small sip of my wine.

"Okay, then tell me something you don't like," He drinks wine.

Gale. The fact that my family is gone. How I was raped several times. Abuse. Nightmares. The list goes on.

"Hot sauce," I say.

"I can agree with you on that," He nods his head in agreement.

...

It's night time as Peeta starts to load the blanket and basket by the truck.

"Want to go for a walk?" He asks.

"At night? Isn't it dangerous?" I ask.

"You'll be fine, you're with me," He says.

"Okay," I say.

...

"- that's when Finnick dragged me to Florida. That's where I got this," He shows me a scar on his arm. I can barely make out the outline of a word." The crab was having a bad day."

I chuckle and shake my head.

"Peeta, who's...who were Haymitch and Chaff talking about?" I ask.

"Oh.." He says with a hint of anger in his voice." You were going to find out sooner or later. They were talking about my ex-girlfriend, Megan, of two years in a half. One day, I decided I was going to propose to her so I took her out for dinner. Right before I could pop the question, she told me that she was breaking up with me. I asked her why and she told me because I wasn't good enough."

"Peeta-" I begin.

It must have been terrible. With an abusive mother, making you feel hopeless, I'm sure it must've reminded him of her when Megan called their relationship off. I feel nothing but anger towards this woman that broke his heart.

"I'm over it," He says.

I shouldn't have even asked. Here I am, asking him personal questions when I don't even tell him about myself.

"Ask me something personal," I mumble as we continue to walk.

He stops which causes me to do the same.

"If this is about what just happened, I-" He begins.

It's only fair. He told me something personal so now I should reciprocate.

"Just do it," I say.

He furrows his eye brows and shakes his head.

"No, I'm not going to make you feel uncomfortable," He says.

"When I was younger, I loved archery. I still do but I completely forgot why I did." I say and continue to blurt out random facts about myself, to make up for what I did." I'm not into the latest fashion. I like dandelions, they remind me of Pr- someone close to me. When I was twenty one, I tried to kill myself-"

"-Okay, stop-" He begins.

"- by taking a full bottle of unprescribed medication. I passed out and woke up days later in the same spot." I say with no shame in my voice.

Around that time, I was still depressed about my family's death and I just couldn't take the abuse from Gale. I tried to end my life but failed.

When Gale found me, he didn't take me to the hospital because he didn't care. He just left me there to die.

Peeta looks at me with different emotions. Unexpectedly, he wraps his arms around me and I do the same.

There's no need to say sorry for this because I know that it wont do us any good.

...

"Thanks for the picnic, Peeta, it was fun," I give him a small smile.

"Thank you for suggesting a wonderful idea," He says in a cheerful tone.

"Your niece certainly wasn't joking around when she talks about your picnics," I chuckle.

"No she doesn't," He laughs.

"I should go to bed," the smile stays on my face." Goodnight."

"Goodnight," He says and watches me in a curious way.

As I head to my room, I can't help but think how something changed between us.

My room? My room?!

The smile instantly disappears once I close the door.

No, I can't think that way and I can't think about this being my room because I can't stay here!

My eyes widen at the thought of my actions.

I'm getting attached to him.

No, I can't let that happen. Then when it's time to go, It'll get harder to leave. I'll just keep my distance for a while and... and... I'll think of something.
