Secrets Are Meant To Be Found Out:

UCLA Medical Center:

The Fields showed up at UCLA Med Center around the same time that Charlie & Co plus Allen Eppes. They were only waiting about ten minutes before the ambulance with David and Devan arrived and behind the ambulance was Don and the rest of the team. Lt. Walker had driven behind Don after finding out that the accident had involved two of his agents. Don and the rest of the team along with Lt. Walker walked in behind the stretcher that held Devan. David was following closely behind the stretcher that one paramedic and the firefighter that had jumped in while leaving the scene were pushing. David was holding a bandage to his forehead. Devan's parents stood up from the chairs they had been sitting in as the stretcher was wheeled passed. Mrs. Fields put a hand to her mouth and turned away. They would have to call her siblings later on and get them to the hospital.

David walked into the ER with the paramedics and was pushed onto a bed opposite of Devan as she was transferred from the stretcher to a gurney. They cleared her neck and took her off the backboard as well as removed the C-Spine Collar. Once done with those tasks, they took blood and took portable x-rays of her head, neck, back, abdomen and chest just to make sure she was actually okay. Once done with that, they moved her to her own room. David's head was stitched up and he was allowed to go out to the waiting room while the doctors transferred Devan to her room. This was something nobody expected. They told David that they wouldn't know anything till after all the tests came back as well as the x-rays.

The Waiting Room:

Nearly three hours later, after David had exited the ER to sit with everyone else, a doctor walked out to talk to everyone.

"I'm looking for anyone out here for Devan Fields."

"We're here for her. I'm Agent Don Eppes, her boss. This is her mom and dad."

"Mr. and Mrs. Fields, I'm Dr. Kalinda; I worked on your daughter."

"How is she?"

"Other than the laceration on her head from the accident, she seems to be in good health, though when we looked at her chest x-ray, we noticed something strange about her heart. Are you aware that your daughter has a heart condition?"

"Yes, she was born with it. Her birth mother was a drug addict and she was born a crack baby. We were told that when we adopted her she would have some medical problems concerning her heart. She sleeps with a breathing apparatus during the night so she doesn't stop breathing in the middle of the night. But what does this have to do with the accident?"

"Your daughter came in with barely a pulse. The only way to keep her alive was to continue to perform CPR on her while breathing for her. I'm sorry, but we had to intubate her to help her breathe. Did your daughter have any wishes concerning her medical status?"

"She wouldn't sign a DNR. She didn't want us to have to make the hard decision of taking her off life support if it ever came down to that. She's been on the transplant list since she was about four years old. But when she became an agent, her medical problems seemed to disappear. It was as if the problems didn't exist anymore, not saying they didn't or anything, it was just that there were fewer and fewer hospital stays after she became an agent."

"That's what I was afraid of. I'm sorry, but her medical problems didn't just up and disappear. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but her heart has become increasingly weak. I've talked with the cardiologist that has been treating her since she was a child and she also agreed with my plan. I want to get your daughter moved from her position on the transplant list to the top, make it a priority to get a new heart as soon as possible."

"Well, if that can happen, then albeit."

"Alright, I'll have a nurse escort you to her room, but she is still unconscious. And until a new heart is found for her, she'll need to stay hospitalized. She can do work from her room, but I as well as her main doctor want to keep her on a ventilator to make sure she breathes through the night."

"I understand. I mean, we understand. Is she awake at all?"

"No, she's still unconscious. The laceration caused her a concussion so she'll be out of it for a while. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have another patient I need to attend to. I'll get that nurse for you."

Dr. Kalinda walked out of the waiting room. They watched her stop at the nurse's station and tell them that the group she had just been talking to needed to be taken to Agent Fields room immediately. One of the nurses nodded and stood up walking over to the group.

"If you'll please follow me, I can take you to your friend's room now."

"Thank you."

Devan's Room:

Mr. and Mrs. Fields walked in first and went straight to their daughter's bed. Mrs. Fields held her hand and kissed her on the forehead. Mr. Fields just held his daughter's hand and remembered the last time she had been in the hospital for anything serious enough to warrant being intubated. She had been in high school and her brother had caught her as she had hit the ground without a pulse. Her whole school had been made aware of her condition after that incident and had made sure to get her to take it easy. He hated seeing his daughter in the hospital especially since this time it had to do with some idiot that didn't think he needed to stop at his red light.

Don and the team moved into the room a few minutes later. They weren't expecting Devan to look so pale and weak. David had mentioned to Don that Devan had looked tired on the way back to the office as well as before they went to interview their victim's husband and even during the interview. He'd also said that the victim's husband and Devan were really close and that they had even hugged and planned a lunch before they'd left his house. It was something that needed to be discussed further with Devan when she was feeling better. But they still had a case to work so they knew better than to stay long. And as expected, Allen Eppes said he'd stay as long as she was in the hospital, though he would have to go home every now and then to change his clothes and shower and eat.

Coming To Terms:

When Devan woke the next morning, she was groggy and she couldn't speak. When she opened her eyes and noticed the tube, she understood that she was in the hospital. Looking around the room she saw her parents and Mr. Eppes lounging in the chairs in the room, nodding off every now and then and then snapping their heads back awake. It was also about this time that Dr. Kalinda walked in. When she saw Devan's eyes open she made a point to say hello.

"Well hello there Ms. Fields. It is so good to see those pretty green eyes of yours open."

"She's awake?" Mr. Fields asked before he saw his daughter's eyes open.

"Yes she's awake. Mr. Eppes, would you mind calling your son for me, they'll want to know that she is awake. In the meantime, why don't we get something set up for you so that you can communicate with the rest of us?"

"Thumbs up," Devan's answer.

"Alright, we'll get a computer in here so that you can communicate unless you want to use your own laptop then that shouldn't be a problem. Now, I need to shoo everyone out of the room as I have some tests I need to run. You can come back in when the tests are complete."

"Just let us know how she's doing in the meantime. And Devan, your mother has called your siblings. They'll be here by tomorrow afternoon."

"Rolls eyes, thumb sideways," Devan's sarcastic answer.

"You've mastered the art of how to talk while on a ventilator. At least your parents know what you are saying."

"She also knows sign language. She learned it just in case she was unable to talk for long periods of times, if say she was on a ventilator for long periods of time."

"I see, well I guess we'll just have to have an interpreter on hand for you at all times when you are not on your laptop. I'll assume Agent Eppes is bringing the laptop from the office." The last statement directed at Mr. Eppes and he relayed the information to Don reminding him not to forget the power cord either.

"You've assumed right, doctor. He'll bring it along with her purse and bag she'd had at the office from yesterday. He seems to think it's a good idea that she stay on the case so they'll be in and out a lot until the case is solved."

"That's fine with me, I'll let the staff and security know what's going on so they won't be alarmed by the Agents comings and goings."
