That Mischievous Grin

Chapter Fourteen

By LoveMeNever

Jaime waited on tables at the diner, so far everything was working out well for her, everyone else though... not so much. Ruby managed to get herself 'fired' because of a fight she had with Granny. Emma is now the Sheriff but she's handling a missing persons case, Kathryn Nolan had officially gone missing, Mary Margaret was the prime suspect too. Which surprised everyone including Jaime.

As for David, he was going totally crazy. Mr. Gold was his usual cryptic self but he hadn't brought up the favor that Jaime owes him yet.

Regina, however, was the only one who was semi-happy. Making her much better company than the rest of Storybrooke. Unfortunately, Jaime hadn't had the chance to see the mayor since a few days ago when she had her mental breakdown in front of her.

Not a very good last impression. She wanted to remedy that and quickly, she couldn't have Regina thinking of her as a weak minded mess.

"Ms. Foster would you stop daydreaming and get back to work?" Mrs. Lucas snapped at her.

Jaime smirked and bit back a smart-ass remark. Probably not good to sass her boss, no? "Yes, ma'am."

Mrs. Lucas rolled her eyes at the tone and small salute the brunette gave her. Honestly, with Ruby and Jaime both, she was going to have a heart attack one of these days.

Speaking of Ruby, she walked awkwardly into the diner and sat at the bar covering her face from her grandmother, who had just retreated into the kitchen. Jaime smirked, "Look what the cat dragged in. Heya, Rubes."

"Hey." Was all the answer Jaime got.

She rolled her eyes, "What are you doing?"

"When is your shift over?"

"I seem to remember having this conversation with you not to long ago. Although the roles were reversed, I was the one depressed over a job and you were giving me a drink." Jaime's eyebrow twitched in amusement. and she set a glass of orange juice in front of her. Ruby just scoffed, quite adorably, Jaime noted.

"Look I'm super bored and with Mary Margaret in jail I have no one else to talk too. It's bad enough I'm coming to you of all people."

Jaime feigned hurt, "Excuse me but I'm extremely open to listen to your bitching." Ruby smacked playfully at her arm making her laugh. "I'm serious, it's the most fun I'm going to get these days." She added just for good measure.

"Are you implying my problems are amusing to you?"

"I think everyone's problems are amusing its not just you, hun." Jaime pretended to think deeply by furrowing her eyebrow and placing a finger on her chin. "Although... your definitely in my top five."

Ruby's head hit the counter top in exasperation.

"Oi, I just cleaned that!" Jaime proceeded to wipe the counter once again when Ruby lifted her head to smirk at her. "Seven."

"What?"

Jaime rolled her eyes. "You asked when my shift was over. It's over at seven. Can I ask what you'll be getting us into?"

The taller of the two smiled innocently and batted her eyelashes. "Oh... nothing." Jaime didn't buy that for a second, she narrowed her purple eyes and pursed her lips.

"Fair enough. As long as it's not illegal! Granny already brought my pay down for being late yesterday so any more screw ups and I'll be doing this job for free."

Ruby grinned, "Great! Come to the docks when you leave here, okay?" she downed the rest of her orange juice and almost skipped out the door with a sway in her hips that Jaime took notice to. Which also made her distracted from the fact Ruby left nothing to pay for her drink.

"Jaime, get back to work!" Granny hissed while watching Jaime stare at something outside the diner.

She did as told and started to immediately take orders and deliver food and clean. She kept wondering what Ruby had in store for tonight at the docks of all places. What fun were the docks?

A hand ran threw her hair, a soft kiss placed on her lips with a certain grin, another hand ventured to the small of her back, and Regina's heart skipped when she felt a light nip at her lower lip. She sighed, happily, when warm lips left hers then trailed down her jaw and neck. She began to feel the warm body pressed against her inch away but she held the body firmly in place. Not wanting to feel the cold of the winter's night air.

The pair laid in the queen's bed, Regina on the bottom and her lover on top of her. When their eyes met, Regina smiled uncharacteristically, the purple eyes sparkled with fascination and adoration. Only one other person had looked at Regina like that, the painful memory of Daniel was pushed far out of mind when Cheshire started kissing her again.

This time with more passion as if sensing where Regina's mind had wondered. That was the one thing she didn't understand, Cheshire always knew when a thought was bothering Regina.

With the distraction Regina felt her stomach flutter as her own hands traveled up and down Cheshire's sides. Her usual mini-skirt was pushed up only slightly but Regina wanted more. More skin on skin contact with the woman. Just as they both were sensing what direction this would be heading in Cheshire stopped what she was doing, her eyes met Regina's, and out of nowhere she said, "You abandoned me... why did you leave me?"

Regina's heart dropped at the hurt expression on the woman's face. She tried to grab at Cheshire's hand but suddenly the bed underneath her disappeared, she fell through darkness, above her was Cheshire's outstretched hand. The darkness slowly closed around her.

She woke with a start, bolting upright on the couch in her office, she must have dozed off for a few moments. Paperwork was on the little table in front of the couch and she held a pin loosely between her fingers.

It had been three days since Regina last saw Jaime and she was starting to miss her but her mayor duties seemed to be never ending. She didn't know what was worse- not knowing that Jaime was in Storybrooke or knowing that she was and didn't remember their time together in the past. Either way, Regina was miserable. Everything was going according to plan though, so she didn't understand it.

Mary Margaret was being accused of the kidnapping and murder of Katherine, which made everyone turn against the little snow princess. Of course, no one trusted Regina any more than usual, but she was okay with that, she didn't need the trust of the town. She only wanted the trust of one person, Jaime. Their relationship was definitely no where close to that.

Lately, Regina noticed any time she passed the diner, Jaime seemed less... enthusiastic. Normally, the woman was overeager about everything and delving into sticky situations. Seeing her with a job, serving people, was quite humorous but also sad. The old Jaime would never work a job like this, she'd be miserable in the little confined space of a tavern. Regina remembered a time when the cat woman was sick, the physician ordered her to stay inside and take it easy, that did not bode well. Chess would complain all day long about how boring it was to stay inside and all she wanted was to let her 'wild' side run free. Regina caught her sneaking out more than once.

She smiled fondly at the memories. They tended to brighten her rough days. Then, of course, she would get depressed again knowing that Cheshire may not ever remember any of these wonderful memories they had of each other.

Regina's phone buzzed lightly on the arm of the couch, she picked it up and read the caller ID. Strangely, it was the principal of Henry's school. She clicked the phone on. "Yes, Mr. Little, how can I help you?"

"Mayor Mills, please forgive me for taking up your time but I just wanted to inform you Henry was not in school today." Mr. Little said a little hesitantly.

Regina gritted her teeth. She knew she dropped Henry off at school today to make sure he went. Did Emma have something to do with this? Regina's hand balled into a fist unconsciously. "Thank you for calling me, I have to go." She clicked the phone off without a response from the principle.

Immediately, she called the sheriff's office. The only reason Henry would skip school would to be with Emma. The thought made her blood boil. Not to her surprise, there was no one at the office. The one place Regina knew the pair went almost daily was the diner. She would check there first.

As she arrived at the diner a thought struck her, was Jaime working? She peered in through the glass trying to get a look inside. Her thought was confirmed when she saw the familiar face of Jaime. Regina had to suppress a smirk at the scowl on her face while Granny scolded her over something.

"Is something wrong?" Regina asked as she walked into the diner quickly scanning the area for Henry or Emma. She saw neither of them to her disappointment.

Jaime flashed a smile at her but it quickly faded. "Oh, um, no not at all." Granny's firm stare told her not to say anything out of line.

Regina could only imagine the thoughts roaming around in Jaime's brain. Probably something along the lines of complaining about being treated like a child or a delinquent. "Have either of you seen Sheriff Swan by any chance?" She sat on a stool in front of the pair that were behind the counter.

"I think she came in earlier? Why do you ask?" Replied Granny, Regina had really wanted Jaime to respond.

"Mayor business." Regina said sharply. She needn't explain herself to an old nosy woman. "Jaime, was Henry with her?"

Apparently, more like thankfully Regina thought, Granny seemed to realize she was not welcome in this conversation so she left muttering about cooking more pancakes or something of equal importance. Jaime visibly relaxed once she was out of sight. Regina smiled sadly while the waitress was not looking. Why did this have to be like this for Cheshire?

"I don't think he was. Shouldn't he be in school right about now anyways?" Jaime glanced over at the clock on the wall and gasped lightly. "Damn! It's already almost four?!"

"Yes. School should have been let out a few minutes ago but I received a call from the principal informing me Henry was not there today." Already Regina was fuming again, she tried to keep the anger out of her voice but she noticed Jaime looking at her with slight concern.

Jaime put a finger to her chin in thought. "Sorry, but I've got nothing on Henry. However I did see Emma like an hour ago. Maybe she has something to do with it?"

"I don't doubt that."

"Anything I can do to help?"

"What? You're working." Regina was flattered Jaime was willing to help but she did not have the best track record when it came to work.

Jaime's cheeks turned a shade of pink, Regina almost thought she imagined, but it was definitely there. "Oh! Uh, duh. Right. Well... I'll be on lookout duty then?"

Regina smirked, she did quite enjoy seeing the woman flustered and embarrassed. The tables were finally turned it seemed. Cheshire always was the flirty, joking around type while Regina was always to unsure of how to act around her.

It was interesting to see the roles reversed.

"Perhaps dinner when your shift is over would suffice as a reward?" Regina smiled sweetly.

Jaime was surprised to say the least. Regina guessed she was not expecting the offer. The waitress kept opening her mouth and then closing it again. Then she cleared her throat, "That sounds lovely." she said finally after regaining her composure.

"Excellent." Regina turned to leave.

"Wait! My shift is over at seven is that to early?"

"Of course not. I'll be excepting you." The door closed after Regina who was grinning ear to ear feeling very satisfied with herself. Now she just hoped Jaime wouldn't get herself into trouble between now and then.
