Chapter 9: The Next Day
We go to school together and yes we know each other.
Hermione read the message over and over again while talking to herself. I know this person. She was going over the list of possible guys that could've written the message. With every boy she could think of she could think of reasons why it couldn't be him. It can't be any of the Slytherins because, well they're fucking Slytherins and I'm a Griffindor. It has to be someone from the other houses. I know it can't be Harry because he likes Gin.
She continued her debate until Ginny walked into the room. "What's wrong, Hermione? It looks like you were in deep thought before I walked in," Ginny pointed out.
Hermione shook her head of her thoughts and looked at Ginny. She had on denim shorts and a tank top, with her bright blue bikini strings exposed near her neck. Her hair was put in a ponytail.
"Remember that diary that I got yesterday," Hermione asked. Ginny nodded and urged her to continue. "When you went to the bathroom I opened the diary and this letter fell out." She handed the letter to Ginny and watched her as she read the letter. Her eyebrows went from furrowed in thought to raising them in question.
"Merlin's beard, 'Mione. This person has a way with words. Did you write to him?" Ginny's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Yes, but I'm not sure if I should continue writing to this person. I mean, he claims that we know each other, but I don't think I should trust an anonymous person," Hermione reasoned, shaking her head.
Ginny's demeanor faltered. "Aren't you just a little curious as to who this person is?"
"I am, but—" Ginny's voice cut off Hermione's reasoning.
"If this poor, shy bloke is giving you the time of day, then maybe he's worth knowing. Hermione, this boy really likes you," Ginny noted.
"I know that, Gin. It's just that I'm afraid of getting hurt. Don't you remember what happened last year with Ron."
Ginny sat down on the bed next to Hermione and put her hand on her best friend's hand. "I'm pretty sure that won't happen. If this bloke really knows you then he knows how skilled you are with a wand and he doesn't want to get caught on the wrong side of it. You should talk to him, but start off slow," Ginny smiled.
Hermione paused and debated whether she should continue writing to him or not. Ginny's face radiated with animation as she waited for a response. Hermione looked at Ginny's expression and tried to say no. She tried to resist the redhead's facial expression, but failed. It was then that she decided, "Oh alright. I'll write to him. I swear you can get me to do anything, even if you're not using those puppy dog eyes. That face you made may as well have been one."
Ginny squealed and gave Hermione a hug. "Yay, 'Mione's got a secret admirer!"
Hermione giggled as she embraced her friend, "But it won't be a secret for long. I'm going to make him reveal his identity after a while."
Hermione's cousin entered the guest room with his arms folded across his chest. His biceps looked bigger as he did this, much to Ginny's delight. "Hey, what's this about a secret admirer," Devon yelled. Hermione looked up, worried that her cousin was angry, but instead he looked amused. "Well aren't you going to tell your cousin what's going on?"
Hermione and Ginny exchanged glances at each other. Ginny nodded in encouragement. Hermione began by gently lifting the locket around her neck with two fingers. "I got this package yesterday from an anonymous source and inside was a diary with a locket that opens it. I opened it and this letter fell out," she explained, while holding her locket then handing the letter to her cousin.
Devon looked down at the locket in her fingers and raised an eyebrow. After Hermione handed him the letter he unfolded it and began reading it. His face slowly fell with every word he read. "Hermione, can I please kick this guy's ass," he growled, clenching his teeth.
"I don't even know who this guy is. What makes you think you can find him and beat him up," Hermione reasoned. "Look, Devon, I can handle this on my own. I appreciate that you're just trying to protect me, but I'm not a little girl anymore."
"I know, 'Mione. It's just that I love you very much," he walked over to his cousin and hugged her. He giggled, "I remember when you used to think boys were stupid and served no purpose in life except to make girls better."
Ginny snickered, "She still does."
"Pretty much," Hermione stated. "I'm going to go and get ready." She let go of her cousin and grabbed her bathing suit and her cover up to go change in the bathroom. In the bathroom, she washed her face, brushed her long, brunette hair, brushed her teeth, and put on her bathing suit and cover up. She put her hair in a think bun on top of her hair and walked out of the bathroom.
"Guys, are you ready," she yelled.
"I have to pack the cooler and find my board and then we're good to go," Devon replied.
Hermione grabbed her beach bag and her towel and headed out the room. The witch stopped in her tracks and looked at the diary on the nightstand. Running towards the nightstand, she took the diary and a self-inking quill and shoved it inside her beach bag. I'll just take it so I can get answers from the bloke, she thought. Next, she felt around her neck for the locket. When she felt the locket around her neck she exited the room to meet up with Ginny and Devon.
"Let's get going guys!"
Ginny carried the cooler with the ice cold drinks in one hand and her beach bag in the other while Devon carried his surfboard. They walked out the sliding glass door and onto the soft, white sands of the beach. Hermione smiled as she looked around and noticed that there were no people at the beach. When they found a good spot in the middle of the beach, Hermione set a towel down on the sand and Ginny placed the cooler next to it. On the other sde of the cooler, Ginny laid a towel out on the sand and put her bag on top of it. The girls began taking their cover ups, folded them neatly, and placed them in their bags. "I can't wait to get a tan going; I'm sick of being too pale," Hermione groaned.
"Me too. Can you hand me the suntan lotion," Ginny asked. Hermione nodded, and handed her the lotion. Ginny applied the lotion and lathered it on her fair skin.
From a distance Devon watched as the beautiful redhead applied suntan lotion on herself. Hermione looked around for her cousin and frown when she found him making a lewd face as he watched Ginny rub lotion on. When Devon noticed Hermione giving him a disapproving look he looked away and pretended to be looking at the waves. He strolled towards the girls and told them, "I'm going to hit the waves for a while."
The girls nodded, put on a pair of sunglasses, and laid down on the towels. "I didn't know the sun could feel this nice. I wish the sun would come out more back home," Ginny sighed.
"Mhm," Hermione responded. She sighed in content, relaxed under the sun's rays. She reached into her bag, pulled out portable speakers, and plugged it into her iPod. Soon sounds of the Beach Boys drifted through the salty sea air.
Well she got her daddy's car
And she cruised through the hamburger stand now
Seems she forgot all about the library
Like she told her old man now
And with the radio blasting
Goes cruising just as fast as she can now
And she'll have fun, fun, fun
'Til her daddy takes the T-Bird away
(Fun, fun, fun 'til her daddy takes the T-Bird away)
Well the girls can't stand her
'Cause she walks looks and drives like an ace now
(You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace)
She makes the Indy 500 look like the Roman chariot race now
(You look like an ace now, you look like an ace)
A lotta guys try to catch her
But she leads them on a wild goose chase now
(You drive like an ace now, you drive like an ace)
And she'll have fun, fun, fun
'Til her daddy takes the T-Bird away
(Fun, fun, fun 'til her daddy takes the T-Bird away)
Well you knew all along
That your dad was gettin' wise to you now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
And since he took your set of keys
You've been thinking that your fun is all through now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
But you can come along with me
'Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
And we'll have fun, fun, fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away
(Fun, fun, fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away
(Fun, fun, fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
(Fun, fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
After the song ended and the next song began playing, Ginny stood up. "I'm going into the water. Want to come with me," she offered.
"In a few minutes," Hermione responded, smiling at her best friend. She watched as Ginny ran into the water, flinging sand upward with every step she took. As soon as Ginny was waist deep in the water, Hermione took out the diary and quill. She unlocked the diary and opened it. She read the last message, thinking about what she should write. For about thirty seconds, she thought about what to write until she came up with something.
This has given me a lot to think about. For once I don't know what to say.
"I don't know who this person is, but they manage to leave me speechless," Hermione said out loud. Slowly, the message appeared on the page.
The great Hermione Granger is speechless? I never thought I'd live to see the day.
The witch could not hold back the small smile that spread across her face. She began thinking of what to write, but her thoughts were interrupted when Ginny yelled, "Hermione get in the water, it's too nice to just sit there!"
"I'm going in right now." Shortly, she took off her cover up, revealing her black bikini. Not long after she but the diary back in her bag and took off towards the water. Hermione dipped a toe into water and squealed at how cold it was. Slowly, she entered the water, moving further in as she became acclimated to the temperature. Eventually, she was waist deep in the water next to her best friend. "Wow, Ginny all those years of playing quidditch with your brothers paid off," she commented, scanning Ginny's toned stomach and arms.
"Well if you have Ron and the twins as siblings, the games can get really competitive. What about you, have you been working out," she asked as poked Hermione's stomach.
"Not really. I mean yes, but not a lot." At the beginning of summer Hermione lost the baby fat on her face and got her curves. She no longer had the bushy hair that made it easy for her friends to spot her from a distance.
Ginny gestured to Hermione, moving her finger up and down. "Come to think of it, you changed a bit, but you look hot," she grinned mischievously.
Hermione burst out laughing, "Um thank you?"
As the hours passed the girls splashed in the water and tanned as they watched Devon caught waves. Afterwards the girls packed up and walked back to the house so Devon could go to work. The girls took showers and got ready to go shopping in Waikiki. Within an hour, they girls finished getting ready.
The three drove on the streets of Hawaii. "Where do you work Devon," Ginny asked.
"I work at Hilton Village Hotel. I teach surfing lessons to the tourists. It's awesome because I get paid to surf," he responded. After a while they arrived in Downtown Wakiki. "I'm going to drop you guys off at the front of the Moana Surfrider Hotel. Meet me back here at 3:50, yeah?"
The girls nodded their heads and hopped out of Devon's car. They waved as he drove away and walked along the sidewalk. "Where should we go first," Ginny asked.
"Let's go to wizarding part of the town," Hermione suggested. Ginny threw an astonished expression at Hermione. "The muggle tourists are really annoying," she commented.
Ginny understood and nodded. They strolled to the international market place found a large tree in the middle of the area. This tree was special because it looked like it had two waterfalls coming out of it and its water trinkled down a few rocks into a pond with coy fish. Surrounding the fish were large, grey rocks. Hermione walked up to one and tapped it in an intricate rhythm, making it glow a slight blue color. Ginny watched as a coy fish made its way to them and wondered what would happen next. The fish popped its mouth out of the water and it whispered, "Password?"
"Pars aquarum," she whispered. The fish used its tail to splash water at the witches.
Ginny shrieked as the water hit her face. She rubbed it out of her face and asked, "What the bloody hell was that all about?"
"The fish splashed us with water that makes us invisible to the muggles so they can't see us as we enter the Hawaiian wizarding world."
As soon as Hermione finished explaining, the vines next to the International Marketplace sign climbed up the rocks, allowing the waters to part. The girls took long strides onto the dry path of the pond and watched as the rocks in front of them vanished. As the girls walked through the path, the noticed that the street was almost exactly like the one back in Diagon Alley, but this one had buildings that were made of wood, bamboo, and the shades were made of grass and leaves.
"It's beautiful here," Ginny exclaimed with a look of awe in her eyes.
Hermione grinned. "Well let's start shopping!"
The girls walked into the store, taking in the strong, but sweet aroma. Smells like bamboo. They shopped and treated themselves to sushi until Devon came back.
"Hey, guys. How would you like to come to a bonfire with me and my friends?"
The girls both shouted, "yes," at the same time. On the way home, the group listened to the radio in silence.
Twenty minutes after arriving home, the group strolled to the beach next to the house. From a distance the sun was beginning to set and a small fire was flickering in the warm, Hawaiian breeze. With every step they took music gradually became louder. It looked like there were at least fifteen people. Some held drinks in their hands, while others were eating or socializing with others. As they walked to the fire, one of Devon's friends greeted them.
"Hey, bro. Who are these beautiful wahines," a blond boy with green eyes asked, pointing to Hermione and Ginny.
"This is my cousin, Hermione, and her friend, Ginny."
"It's nice to meet you guys. My name is Ryan," he said, shaking their hands. "Won't you guys come and sit with us around the fire?"
They walked to the fire, grabbed long twigs, and impaled an uncooked hot dog with them. Next they began roasting the weenies and had many amiable conversations.
After a while Hermione and Ginny met more of Devon's friends. Ginny went to dance with a group of people as Hermione and her cousin sat on a rock, watching from a distance.
"So what made you want to come and visit," he asked, facing Hermione.
Hermione's face fell and broke her eye contact with her cousin and fixed her gaze on the rock she was sitting on. "Well it all started when I came home from my concert," she began. "I came home five minutes before my curfew, and my father-"
Devon's voice cut her off, "say no more, baby cousin. I understand. Ever since he started drinking, the family just cut of all ties with him." He rolled his eyes and urged her to continue.
Hermione shared her story, telling him about how her father threw a bottle at her and how she left her home in a fit of rage. Sometime during the story, Hermione started sobbing silently, laying her head on her cousin's shoulders. He hugged her, "Think of it this way, now you won't ever have to see him again. You did the right thing. No father should treat his only daughter in that way."
The brunette wiped the last of her tears wasted over family problems, and enveloped her cousin in a hug. "Thank you for understanding."
"You're my cousin. I would do anything to help you out," he smiled. "Now let's go interact with people, we look awkward just standing here like a couple of squares."
Devon led Hermione to his friends, and they began dancing in one big clump. As the night went on, people started consuming more and more alcohol, resulting in drunken make-out sessions. The couples started wandering off from the group, either going home or an empty part of the beach. Being the sensible girl that she was, Hermione told Devon and Ginny that she was going to back to the house. She walked to the house and got ready for bed once she was in the guest room. An urge suddenly took place within her as she looked at the diary sticking out from her bag. Leaping off of the bed, she took the diary and used her locket to unlock it. She quickly scribbled, I sorry to keep you waiting. I was busy today.
After a few minutes, a new message appeared, I don't mind. For you I'd wait for an eternity.
Without realizing it, Hermione felt her cheeks grow warm. In the midst of blushing, her eyelids grew heavy. She struggled to stay awake and wait for Ginny and Devon, but to no avail. Her head hit the pillow and fell asleep.
A thud woke up the sleeping witch. She looked over at the digital clock. 1:22. Then she peeked at the bed next to hers to find an empty bed. Where's Ginny? Quietly, she slipped out of bed, padded out of the room, and entered the dark hallway. She could hear a pair of muffled voices.
"Are you sure about this," came a male voice.
"Hell yes," replied a female.
They sounded drunk, judging by the sounds of their voices. Hermione rounded the corner from the hallway and into the living room. She muttered a disillusionment charm for herself to stay hidden. The faces belonging to the voices were masked by the darkness, making it harder for Hermione to see who they were. Hermione backed away as the pair moved next to her. As they did this, sounds of wet, sloppy kisses echoed in the hallway. Hermione's face changed to a disgusted expression. She watched as the pair entered Devon's room when she realized that her cousin had brought a girl home. Thinking it was one of his drunken friends, she turned and went to her room. She did a double take when she heard a familiar voice. Hermione looked and recognized the flash of red hair. "Oh, Devon," the redhead moaned as he left a trail of kisses along her neck.
