Chapter 6

Several Months Earlier

Eli couldn't take this anymore. She just needed something, anything, from her life outside of the prison walls. Word from Dean, a sign from Cas, she didn't care. She just wanted a trace of her old life.

But, of course, she knew that she wouldn't get any of that. So she'd lay on her bed, reading some novel for the rest of the foreseeable future because that's all she could do.

She spent a lot of time wondering what Dean was doing. She assumed that he was with Lisa, living some normal life. Happy as she was for him, she wished that they would be out on the road, together. That's all that Eli really needed. Someone who would stick with her. Someone that understood.

So when a guard came to her cell saying, "There's a visitor for you," she hoped the best.

Being escorted to the visiting area was the longest walk she had taken in a while. She could hardly believe that it was happening. Dean had come to talk to her. Maybe to get her out. That only meant that he would want to get back out on the road, right? She felt bad about being this selfish. If Dean was here, it probably hadn't worked out with Lisa. Dean was probably heartbroken. But that could be dealt with. They had always gotten through it before. This wouldn't be much different.

But when she stared through the glass separating her and her visitor, she couldn't believe her eyes. It wasn't Dean sitting there behind the glass, but Sam.

As she made her way over to the seat provided for her and the guard exited the room to wait outside, questions whirled through her mind. How was he here? How did he escape hell? Why wasn't Dean with him? Why weren't her brothers together, like always?

She spoke hesitantly. "Sam..?"

Sam cracked a smile, looking at her, "Hey, Eli. How are you?"

"Crappy." she answered honestly, smiling widely, "How are you here?"

"I got out of hell. I didn't know where to start looking for you or Dean, but when I read a news story that said you went to prison, I got my first lead." he explained.

"This is crazy. I was going insane in here. So no word from Dean?"

"No. All of his old numbers don't work anymore, so I can't contact him." he didn't seem upset or frustrated by the fact at all. He seemed quite calm. This struck Elizabeth as strange, but she shook it off.

"Well, get me out of here and we'll go find him." Eli was extremely excited to get out of there. It had been way too long since she'd had the small comforts of her old life, like a cheeseburger or a soft-ish bed.

"That isn't going to happen." Sam's smile changed, looking less joyful and more pitying.

"What do you mean?" Eli looked at him, thoroughly confused.

"You see, I didn't come to get you out of prison, little sister. I came to tell you that I am alive. Nothing more." Sam stood up.

"What?! Why would you leave me here?!" Eli's voice sounded frantic. She couldn't stay here. She just couldn't. Not if her brother was out there hunting.

"Because I have no good reason to get you out. I mean, what's in it for me?" he started to walk away.

"Sam? Sam!" she yelled after him. He didn't spare even a glance as he left.

Eli was pulled from the room and taken back to her cell, screaming for her brother the entire way. She didn't understand. How could he do this? How could Sam do this?

What was happening?
