Nikki POV

I groaned as I rolled over in bed, feeling blindly for my phone on my night stand. The ringing was getting too annoying to ignore.

"Hello?" I asked groggily.

"Nix, where you still sleeping?" I heard a voice chide me over the phone. I sat straight up in bed. "It's almost noon in Pennsylvania sweetie, you should have been up for hours!"

"Uh…I had a long night." I said weakly. It was ridiculous. I was twenty-frickin'-two and Olivia's 'mom voice' still scared me shitless.

Olivia, my foster mom, just laughed. "Oh relax Nix dear." She laughed softly.

"I'm sorry I haven't called in a while." I said, falling back onto the mountain of fluffy pillows.

"Oh it's ok sweetie," Olivia laughed softly. "You're 22, you're allowed to go have fun and forget to call home now and then."

"Yeah, well, doesn't mean I don't feel bad about it." I mumbled, looking at the detailing on my ceiling. Olivia just laughed again. I could picture her gently shaking her head, making her short, smartly-bobbed curls swish.

"I'm sorry for waking you up, Nixxie, but I have to tell you that a certain sergeant is going to be coming home in a few days, for a whole month."

I was speechless for a second. "He's coming home?" I asked.

"Next Friday." Olivia confirmed.

I was speechless. Chris was like my best friend, and he'd been in and out of a war zone for four years. "I'm on my way now." I said, swinging my legs out of bed and tossing my covers back.

"I'll set up your room for you." Olivia said, I could hear the smile in her voice.

"See you soon!" I said, already pulling my duffle bag out from under my bed.

"Ok. I love you, Nixxie." Olivia said softly. I stopped, and flipped my hair over my shoulder before I answered.

"Love you too." I said quietly.
