Chapter 6: Stings and Swings
Normal POV
"Okay Natsu, are you ready?"
Currently, the two teens were peering over a corner observing their target: Lisanna. Even though Lucy couldn't see, she thought it would be cool because it was done in a lot of movies she had seen when she was little.
"Ready for what?" Natsu whispered, utterly confused.
"Natsu you dummy! You're supposed to give Lisanna your present." She harshly explained.
At that moment she felt a pang in her heart.
Why was saying that hard?
"Oh yeah! I'll be right back, so just stand here and wait okay?"
"Okay."
It was 10 minutes later and Natsu had not yet returned, so Lucy just decided to find her way to class…
Alone.
Now, she knew it was a bad idea, but come on, she really had no choice. Considering Natsu was probably frolicking in a meadow with Lisanna somewhere, she had to occupy herself.
"Lucy?"
"Sting?" Lucy tilted her head in the direction of his voice.
"What're you doing wandering through the halls without anyone helping you?"
"You know…I have no idea." She was utterly stumped, and before she found him, she had already run into several people on accident.
"You have no idea?!" Sting couldn't believe her.
Why in the hell would she just walk aimlessly through the halls?
He couldn't fathom her logic.
The blonde laughed, "Yeah, I don't think things through very well, do I?"
"You really don't…Where do you need to go?" Sting questioned.
"Um, right now, I need to get to Ms. Evergreen's class." She tapped her chin and then snapped her fingers, "I have a better idea Stingy-bee!"
"Don't call me that."
"You don't like it?" She gave a small pout to his general direction.
His eyes widened, "No no no! It's great, it's cool!"
"Anywho, how about," Lucy cupped her hand around her mouth, "we ditch and go hang out?"
"What?! Lucy are you insane?!"
"Probably. Come on it'll be fun!" She grabbed his arm and moved her hand so it was holding on to his wrist. "Let's go!" She started forward.
He yanked her back, "Lucy, we can't ditch, where would we even go?"
She grinned, "I know the perfect place."
Sting sighed in defeat, "Alright. Just tell me where to head I guess."
"Okay, but first, you have to carry me." The blonde girl smiled mischievously.
"Really Lucy?" Sting bent his knees and grabbed the blonde's thighs while she wrapped her outstretched arms around his neck.
"Go forth my noble bee!"
"Lucy, pipe down, you're drawing attention to us." The teenage boy adjusted her on his back. He walked through one of the side doors in the school and they walked quietly through the trees that surrounded the school.
"Stop when you see a rusty swing set." Lucy pinched his cheek. Somehow, even though she was happy, she knew it wasn't the same as what she felt when she had hung out with Natsu the past few days.
She felt herself being lifted and she sat on something cold, after moving her hands around, she latched onto the chains on the swing. "Thanks Sting."
"No problem, it's really quiet here. It's actually pretty nice." Sting looked around at the old park, and it was surprisingly close to the school, yet he had never taken notice of it until now.
"Yeah, I used to come here all the time when I was little, but then I stopped coming."
"Why?"
"Oh well, I was around 3 to 4 when I came here, and my parents, well, let's just say they aren't here anymore."
"Wow, I never knew, I'm so sorry." He looked over to her sadly as he swung on the seat next to her.
"It's cool, I was just a small kid when they died, and now I live with my amazing godmother, so it's all good." She closed her glossy eyes and leaned her head back before breathing in deeply.
Lucy heard shuffling and felt hands rest upon hers, "I'll push you."
She smiled softly, "Okay."
Sting gently pushed her back, and for the next few minutes, they were welcomed by a peaceful silence. She was grateful that Sting didn't stress her to say more, and she felt like she was flying as she was pushed on the swing.
Before the blonde knew it, she started laughing and smiling. Sting stood back and watched her swing by herself. "Thanks Lucy, I'm having fun."
"No, thanks for agreeing to this Sting, I just really wanted to get away today." She swung back and forth and felt the wind pulse around her as hair blew in her face.
"You're really cool, you know that, Lucy?"
"You aren't so bad yourself Stingy-bee." Lucy stopped her legs and she gradually came to a stop. Her feet touched the ground beneath her while she breathed out.
"Before I met you, I wasn't really open to being friends with other people. I always had my brother Rogue, and amazingly, I even have girls fawning over me at school, but when I met you, I realized how different you were and I felt like I could easily grow to like you." He glanced at her as she looked down.
"As a friend of course!" He clarified.
"That's really nice of you to say Sting, thank you." A soft smile graced her features as she set her hands in her lap.
"No problem, if anything, you're the one to thank."
For the next 10 minutes, they sat in a comfortable silence with only the creaking sounds from the swings to accompany it.
"We should head back now." Sting broke the silence.
"Oh yeah, school is probably over by now. Evergreen was my last class."
"I'll walk you back to the school. It's probably only been a few minutes since they got out."
"Okie dokie Stingy-bee." She grabbed his hand and stood. As they walked back, they told each other lame jokes and laughed.
The school came into view and Sting saw Natsu running towards the pair.
"Lucy! Where have you been?!" Natsu put a hand on her shoulder.
"Sting and I were hanging out. Don't get your panties in a twist, Natsu." She shook his hand off her shoulder.
"I have big news to tell you!" Natsu leaned back and meanwhile, Lucy had let go of Sting's hand.
"Lisanna and I are dating now thanks to you!"
For some reason, she was glad, but for another she wasn't.
It was weird, she still didn't quite like Natsu, but yet she did?
Thank God she let go of Sting's hand or else he would be wondering why her palms were sweating.
To be honest, she didn't know herself.
The only thing she was aware of was the distinct cracking sound. She even tilted her head thinking the sound was really there.
Then she laid her hand on her chest and realized it had been her heart. "That's great Natsu." She mustered up the best smile she could as her hand fell to her side.
Why am I feeling this way?
I've only known Natsu for a little bit…
I don't even know what the hell he looks like!
So why…
Why does my heart hurt so much?
