AN~ In-fic chronologically, this comes after "Tattoo." But it works on its own. I completely revamped it, though.
Chicly: Why should it have been Sabrina? Sabrina's already done this. She's over it. Also, as of the oneshot last chapter, she's sixteen.
When Daphne decides she wants to dye her hair, she doesn't tell anyone except Puck. Her surrogate older brother is a bit confused by the idea, but he grins when she tells him she wants it to look like she didn't plan it, because she knows her parents won't go for the idea- she's only twelve, after all, and she's got gorgeous black hair already. She knows this. But she wants a change.
So one night while they're all visiting Granny like they try to do every month or so- even Jake and Puck take time out of their trips to come home the last weekend of every month- Daphne sleeps on the side of the bed that's usually Sabrina's. Sabrina shrugs, but rolls with it- it's not the weirdest thing Daphne's done, especially lately.
Daphne's made sure the blinds are down, and the room is dark enough that this just might work. She's excited, so excited she has a hard time getting to sleep. She squirms and waits.
Eventually, finally, Sabrina falls asleep. But Daphne's still kept waiting.
Daphne herself is just starting to drift off in spite of herself when the door creaks open.
She has to bite down on her hand to keep from squealing. She pulls the palm back out of her mouth, though- she's been trying to stop that.
"Go to sleep, Marshmallow," Puck whispers. "We want this to look real."
"I can't," Daphne hisses back. "I'm too excited."
Puck pulls out a small pouch and says, "I figured. Lie down."
Daphne lies back and closes her eyes with a smile.
The next thing she knows, it's morning. The sun is streaming all over her face, and Sabrina's watching her with wide eyes, nervously. Daphne doesn't respond to her sister's worried look at first. Instead, she watches the planes drifting on the ceiling and feels peaceful.
"Daphne?" Sabrina says, and she sounds very guilty.
Guilt's not something Daphne's been expecting. She looks at her sister, a question in her eyes.
"I think maybe you got a prank meant for me," Sabrina says.
Oh. That explains the guilt. Looking back, Daphne should have expected it. Sabrina's been taking other people's blame on herself again, and it makes sense that she'd apologize for her sort-of-boyfriend's antics, even if they have nothing to do with her. Daphne hopes her sister gets over this soon- it's getting old.
"What do you mean?" Daphne asks, giving her sister the look of confusion she's been practicing in the mirror for weeks.
Sabrina gestures to the mirror and says, "Look for yourself."
Daphne gets up and goes to the mirror, pinching her lips together to keep from breaking out in a grin. She hasn't told Puck what color to use because she think it's make the surprise easier to fake, but she's told him not to use brown, blonde, or red. There's enough of that in the family already.
When she sees her reflection, she stops, staring. Puck hasn't picked one color- he's used all of them. Her hair is a mess of every color imaginable. On her head is a veritable rainbow.
A grin slowly slides its way onto Daphne's cheeks.
"You're not upset?" Sabrina asks.
Daphne shakes her head. "It's awesome!"
Sabrina rolls her eyes with a small smile. "I should have known you'd like it."
Daphne keeps staring at herself while her sister walks down to breakfast. Her smile is still getting bigger. Because now, at long last, Daphne's gotten what she wanted: she looks like herself. Not her sister, or her mother, or her father. By having Puck dye her hair, Daphne's given herself more identity.
