Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

And then it went to voicemail.

May never let the phone go to voicemail when he called her. She usually picked up on the second ring. It had been that way since the moment they had met and exchanged numbers. Even when she had been married to Andrew, she had always picked up the phone to make sure he was okay.

Coulson felt a sense of dread creep over him as all the worst case scenarios came crashing over him at a speed of a million miles per hour. She could be kidnapped! Brainwashed! Or worse, she could be dead. Letting her go off at such a dangerous time in their lives was one of his less brilliant ideas. He should have suggested she stay in the in safety of Hub, told her to go when Hydra was less of a threat and not intent of wiping them out anymore.

He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to concentrate on slowing down his heartbeat. Reminding himself even if he had suggested that she stay close to home, chances were she wouldn't have listened. May was her own person and they had stopped listening to each other a long time ago. She wouldn't have appreciated his advice, she would have left anyways.

She would have told him that she could take care of herself.

Which clearly wasn't true since she was probably lying dead on the beach somewhere or she was being held under duress because she wouldn't reveal the location of her team because even though things were still tense between them, she would rather die than rat out any her family.

Coulson didn't think for a second that he could be overreacting and that she probably wasn't by his phone because she was on vacation. He had just taken it for granted that sometimes she wouldn't be there for him. It was a concept that he wasn't used to, so of course he imagined the worst case scenario.

And his Melinda wasn't there to calm his fears. She was usually the voice of reason when he was being irrational. They balanced each other out very well. If he lost her. . . he didn't know what he was going to do.

He wouldn't be the same without her. It didn't cross his panicked mind that maybe she had felt the same way after she had found out that he had died.

He was just starting to plan how he was going to tell the team that something had happened to May when his phone rang and it was the ringtone he had picked especially for May. He stopped running through his speech and picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Coulson, did you call me?"

"May! You're okay!"

"Of course I'm okay!" May answered and Coulson could imagine her rolling her eyes at him. "I'm on vacation, Phil."

"I know. . . I was just calling to see if you were okay," Coulson answered. "It's been a while."

"You were panicking, weren't you? When I didn't pick up the phone?"

"Me? Panicking? No!"

"Well, I'm okay. Nothing to worry about, Hydra didn't get me and I didn't decide to run away and marry Andrew again. I'll be back soon. Stop worrying, okay?"

"I won't worry," Coulson lied, crossing his fingers so it would be the truth.

"Good. I'll see you soon," May said. "Talk to you later, Coulson."

"I'll talk to you later, May," Coulson replied.

Author's Note:

Not gonna lie, this story wasn't the easiest to write. Things have been crazy around my house lately and the spoilers are killing me! My Phil & Mel mojo has been AWOL. So, I am sorry for this and if it didn't fit the prompt very well. I won't blame anybody if they didn't like it. And I'll try harder the next time, I promise. I think I'll go back and watch some of the best Philinda episodes to get rekindle my love for them.

Until Next Time!

Love,
