"He hates me."
"He doesn't hate you child, he hates himself."
"But deep down, he knows what I did. He doesn't trust me."
"I didn't trust you. I wanted to have you locked in the fridge for eternity."
"But you didn't." Said Natasha with a small smile. "Even after everything I've done."
"If you had met me in my younger days as you've had before, things would have been very different."
"But I met you at just the right time." Said Natasha with a smile as she wrapped her hands around the hands of an aged Peggy Carter.
"It's still all so confusing. Time travel!" Exclaimed Peggy as she remembered the first time she met Natasha Romanoff. Officially.
"What do you want Nick, you know I'm happily retired and that's why you carry the burden of being director."
"Yes I know Margaret. It's just we caught the Black Widow and I'd like you to get a read on her."
"Well I suppose it'd be hard to get a good read on someone with only you know." Said Peggy making a face and pointing at her eye.
"Funny. Real Funny." Muttered Nick as he shook his head.
"Well where is this famous black widow?" Right outside if you're willing to meet her.
"Well don't just stand there unless you mean to tell me you're the infamous black widow in which we'll really have to have a discussion about, well a lot of disturbing topics.
Fury only shook his head as he walked back out to find Natasha leaning casually on a wall.
"She'll see you now," muttered Fury looking extremely peeved.
"Are you alright?" Asked Natasha quizzically.
"I'm Fine!"
"Okay." Said Natasha awkwardly as she stepped into the office and immediately froze.
"You." They both said softly as shock was evident in both their eyes.
The older woman was quickly able to compose herself which Natasha following suit immediately.
"Well have a seat, tell me about yourself." Said the older woman as she motioned towards a chair in front of her desk.
"My Name is Natalia Alianova Romanova, or as I'm more infamously known as The Black Widow. My parents died before I even turned 3 and I entered the KGB not long after which eventually led to the red room where I was trained to Lie, Seduce, and Kill any who opposed the KGB." Said Natasha as she paused to look at the old woman.
"Go on." She simply said with a blank look in her eyes. Her expression stoic as ever refusing to show any signs of rage or sadness which Natasha was full on expecting.
"I've killed men, children, woman all for the sake of completing the mission and I became the best at it. Only the best survive. I never felt remorse as they were enemies and they must be destroyed to keep the peace. I killed Steve Rogers. I was sent back in time, I comforted him. I befriended him. I kissed him. And I put a bullet in his head."
"For the mission?" Asked the old woman
"For the mission." Repeated Natasha quietly
"So what's changed?"
"I. I. felt things I've never felt in years. Things I didn't know I could feel. When I shot him… It hurt. I destroyed something so innocent and I didn't even need a reason. It all happened so fast, and even now. I still feel it. " Whispered Natasha as she looked down, finally breaking eye contact with the old woman.
"Steve always did have an infuriating ability to make people want to do better." Chuckled the old lady.
"I don't blame you, child. You've gone through so much and you will go through so much more. You will be brave Natalia, you will be everything you thought you couldn't be." Said the woman gently as she reached her hand out and wiped the single tear that was falling out behind the curtain of red hair.
"Thank you." Mumbled Natasha.
"Now, go tell Nick to piss off and we'll have some tea together. I believe we have much to catch up on," Mused Peggy with a smile.
"He's losing it Margaret, that look in his eyes. I've seen it in my reflection for so long." Muttered Natasha as she looked over at her mentor.
"Oh he's always been so dramatic." Mused Peggy as she seemed lost in thought, her mind cherishing the ability to remember clearly for once.
"You should have seen him, tearing logs with his bare hands. It was quite impressive." Mused Natasha
"Steven's strength isn't from the serum. His strength is his will and uncanny ability to do the right thing. You know better than anyone that these days the right thing can be quite tricky to define." Said Peggy looking over at Natasha while gripping her hands softly.
"You're going to have to do for him what I once did for you. Guide him. Lead him. Be patient with him. "
"Patience isn't really my strong suit," Mused Natasha with a smile.
The voices were everywhere and all around him he could see visions of the past standing before him. Blaming him. Mocking him. He should have stayed frozen. He did what he thought was right and now everything just seemed so wrong.
"Open up Rogers!" Yelled Natasha as she slammed on the door to no reply.
"Damn it." Muttered Natasha as she pulled out her phone and wired it to the hidden panel next to the door, instantly unlocking it.
"Ste…" Natasha couldn't finish her sentence, as she looked the shell of a man that was sitting on the floor mumbling to himself over and over.
"Steve." Natasha whispered again gently as she crouched down to his level and placed a comforting on his shoulder causing him to jerk back.
"Go away, I don't need you here." muttered Steve as he stood up to lean against the walls of the cabin.
"You need to snap out of it Steve, what you're seeing isn't real." Said Natasha softly.
"What is real anymore?" Muttered Steve with a blank stare
"This moment. Today. You and I. The people you're seeing, the places. It's different now. " Said Natasha
"I don't want it to change." Muttered Steve who seemed to be reaching out at something
"Change is inevitable. Regimes fall everyday."
"Put me back in the ice," Whispered Steve.
"You know we can't do that." Said Natasha as she stood ever so still, ever so calm.
"You don't need me. I'm a man out of time. Put me back in the ice." Said Steve
"No."
"WHY!" Shouted Steve in frustration as he slammed his fist through the wall obliterating the wood and causing a loud ringing to be heard across the cabin as well as various alarms to go off.
Natasha quickly disabled them and walked over slowly to Steve, she looked over at the dent he made into the vibranium-laced wall. With a gentle smile she reached out slowly towards Steve's face as cupped it in her hands.
"Because Steve. We need you." Said Natasha simply as she slammed her fist into his head knocking him out cold.
"I need you." Whispered Natasha as she got up and headed outside.
When Steve awoke everything seemed to be much clearer and less groggy, although his face still felt a little sore. He looked around the Cabin as he noticed the dent he made in the wall, running his hands over it before noticing a note stuck in the dent.
"There's smores outside."- :)
Steve gave a light chuckle as he walked outside to see red by the lake with a warm fire and various bags of food, sitting on a log looking out towards the moonlit lake.
"I never knew Captain America was so dramatic," Mused Natasha without even turning to look over at the approaching figure.
"Yeah well I used to be quite the famous actor back in the day." Retorted Steve causing Natasha to smile, one, which Steve did not see.
"Thank you by the way, that punch really cleared my head." Said Steve as he sat down next to her and reached for a stick.
"I was always a fan of physical therapy." Said Natasha with a smirk
"I was really about to lose it, everyone is gone, and everything is so different. It just feels like I left everyone behind when they needed me, I could have done more." Said Steve as he looked into the fire.
"Let me ask you, the people you care about. Did they believe in you, did they respect you?" Asked Natasha as she turned to look at him.
Steve simply stared at him as he felt like he was having an all too familiar conversation.
"They don't blame you, and if they cared they would have allowed you the dignity of your choices. You did everything you could have done in that moment, saved millions. " Said Natasha as she placed a reassuring hand on Steve's shoulder.
"I guess you're right." Said Steve with a smile as he looked out towards the lake.
"I'm always right." Said Natasha as she finally allowed Steve to see her smile for the first time.
"Thank you, Natasha." Said Steve with a nod.
"And here," said Natasha as she handed him a notepad and a pen.
"You can write down things that will help you catch up on what you missed out on."
"It's blank." Said Steve confused.
"That's why I'm here, so first off is Star Wars." Said Natasha excitedly as she made Steve write it down before giving him a brief synopsis but not spoiling anything as she told him she'd only give him topics and he'd have to experience it himself.
After giving him various topics, Steve decided that he wanted to see what this "Star Wars" was so an excited Natasha led him back into the cabin where she turned on a the television, pressed some buttons and suddenly the long yellow text was flowing and he was entranced by the advanced story.
"They really advanced movies, how did they make all this happen?" Asked Steve who was still awestruck by the moving pictures with colors on the small but large screen.
"Romanoff?" Steve felt a weight on his shoulder looked to see a mass of red hair slumped on his arm.
With a smile he reached his other hand over to cover her with the blanket and continued watching the epic adventures in a galaxy far far away.
