Chapter 6: Teaming Up

Ranger Headquarters was a newer building than the building that housed DPD. The first thing Lucy noticed was the elevator didn't shake when it passed the first floor and when it reached the second floor, the doors actually opened all of the way without having to nudge them with a firm hand.

Stepping off the elevator, she and Darryl followed Walker through the double doors that led into the offices of Company B. The large windows allowed plenty of light into the room. It was bustling with people talking on the phone, talking to one another or typing on computers. It was definitely brighter than the bullpen at DPD and the air conditioner seemed to be in working order since it didn't feel like a sauna.

"Everyone, I would like you to meet Detectives Silver and Sun," Walker introduced as he pointed to each in turn.

"Hi, I'm Gage," the light brown haired Ranger said with a wide, welcoming grin as he shook her hand and then Sun's.

"Sydney Cooke. Nice to meet you," greeted the dark haired and dark-eyed Ranger who stood about a foot shorter than her partner. She sensed the strength of the Ranger and it wasn't because of her firm handshake.

"I'm Trivette," the African-American Ranger said as he stood up and shook hands with Darryl and turned to shake hands with Lucy.

"I remember you. Glad to have a name to go with your face," Lucy said.

"Let me guess. You are here to dig deeper into the bank case because of some gut feeling," said Trivette.

Lucy nodded her head. "I don't believe that the hostage takers were the only ones involved or that it's over."

"So, the closed case isn't closed?" Gage asked with a frown.

"No," she replied shaking her head. "It is unfinished."

"Do you have an idea of who may be involved?" Sydney asked.

"Yes. Her name is Anna Welles. She works at the bank."

"Ok. So, if these guys had an inside woman, why weren't they able to take the money and get out?" Gage asked.

"That is what has been bothering me."

"There are a lot of unanswered questions here," Walker said.

"I really don't see the questions that you are talking about but if you have a feeling on this case, and then we should investigate," said Trivette as he grabbed his coffee cup and took a sip.

"We need to talk to Welles. I don't believe she will speak to me. Maybe someone who she doesn't know, someone she feels comfortable with will help her open up."

"Well, I am the right man for it," Gage said with a grin as he leaned back in his chair and brought his hands to the back of his head.

"Actually I was thinking it would be better if Darryl spoke to her."

"What? Why?" Gage asked his grin vanishing from his face as he glanced at Detective Sun.

She pointed to Darryl's left hand. "He won't hit on her like you would, Ranger Gage."

Sydney laughed and when Gage turned to look at her, smiled sweetly at him.

"I think Sydney should go with Detective Sun. Having a woman along with him would be even less threatening," Walker said.

"All right. What are the rest of us going to do?" Trivette asked as he leaned against his desk.

"We are going to look at every single person that was there that day and see if anything jumps out at us."

"Didn't you already do that?" Gage asked.

"Yes, but I may have missed something."

While Walker, Trivette, Gage and Silver split up the names of the people they were looking into, Darryl and Sydney headed out the door. Darryl looked at the address that his partner had scribbled onto a piece of paper. "I hope Ana decides to talk to us."

"She'll talk to us," Sydney replied as she pushed the button for the elevator.

"If she wouldn't talk to my partner, I doubt we can get her to talk." He allowed Sydney to enter the elevator first and then followed her inside.

She hit the button for the basement garage and then turned with a confident smile on her lips. "You haven't seen me interrogate anyone."

He nodded and put the scrap of paper in his pocket. He had only known Ranger Cooke for about ten minutes, but could already tell that he wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of her.

He pushed the button for the doorbell that was on the left side of a bright, yellow door and could hear the chiming inside. After a few moments, he rang it again and looked at Sydney with a frown when no one answered.

There was a red Ford Taurus sitting in the driveway and he knew Ana lived alone according to Lucy's research into the woman's life.

He frowned at the white house with shutters that matched the color of the door. It was a typical, boring square shaped house that the owner had tried to make more interesting with hanging flower pots and a strange lawn ornament in the front yard that looked like a gnome that had its DNA mixed with some type of a reptile.

"Bad feeling?"

"Bad feeling," Sydney said in agreement with a nod as she reached for her weapon.

"We don't have a warrant to go in."

"Let's go around back."

He led the way around the house and into the neatly mowed small backyard where there were several more strange gnomes. He glanced in the closest window, which revealed a white, U-shaped kitchen with a tiny island at its center.

Sydney had gone past the door and leaned toward that window to peak in. "Sun, I've got a body in the living room."

"Okay," Darryl said as he ran to the door with Sydney right behind him. He was thinking about kicking the door in but he tried the handle first. The door was unlocked. He opened the door and went in first, cleared the kitchen. He followed Sydney into the living room.

He leaned down and checked her neck for a pulse. He knew that with the blood surrounding a head wound was from a bullet to the back of the head that she couldn't be alive but it was his duty to make sure.

"That's Ana Welles," Sydney said after they returned to the living room after clearing the rest of the house.

"Now, we have nothing to go on."

"Your partner was right. She was involved."

"She was half right; because someone killed Welles so there has to be someone else involved."

"I'll call the team," Sydney said as she pulled out her cell phone.

Darryl pulled out his phone. "I'll get forensics here to start working the scene."

The Rangers and Detectives gathered at Ranger Headquarters with more questions than anything else did. The research on the others involved in the bank robbery didn't provide any useful leads so all they had to go on was the murder of Ana Welles.

"The preliminary information from the forensics team is that there was no forced entry, so it is possible that she knew her killer,' Darryl said.

Sydney leaned against her desk and addressed the group. "The coroner says that a gun shot wound to the back of the head is the cause of death. He says not too assume that is the only information that he will have since autopsies tend to hold some surprises sometimes."

"This means that someone else is involved. Do you have any idea who that could be, Lucy?" Walker asked turning his head towards her.

"No," she replied shaking head as she slightly bit her lower lip.

"Looks like we need to see if the murder is connected to the attempted bank robbery," Trivette said as he went behind his desk and sat down, his hands flying over the keyboard.

Lucy had no doubt that the murder and the bank situation were connected and she only had to find something that would help piece this case together. She felt she could depend on the Rangers, which was strange because it normally took a long time that to happen. She decided to take it as a positive sign.
