Chapter 8: Tingle

As Darryl followed his partner toward the offices of the Rangers of Company B, he wondered about his partner's silence during the car ride even after they had obtained coffee from the coffee house that she had introduced him to yesterday. It was difficult for him to read her face since she had kept it impassive since he had picked her up early that morning until they walked into the Ranger's headquarters.

When they walked in, Gage and Sydney were standing next to Gage's desk. It seemed they had interrupted a heated discussion since Sydney elbowed Gage in the stomach before she turned to the two arrivals. "Good morning."

"Morning," Gage said after he coughed.

"Morning," Darryl greeted and wasn't surprised that his partner just nodded her head.

Gage raised his eyebrows questioningly at Darryl but he shrugged in shoulders in response.

"Anything new about Welles?" he asked and wasn't surprised when Gage and Sydney both said no. He was about to ask about where Walker and Trivette was when they walked into the office followed by a woman with shoulder length, curly blonde hair framed perfectly around her face.

"This is my wife Alex. She's also the Assistant District Attorney."

"I'm Detective Darryl Sun and this is my partner Lucy Silver," he said as he shook Alex's hand.

"Nice to meet you," she replied as she turned to Lucy and held out her hand.

"Same here," Lucy said as she shook the accepted hand.

"Alex, I think we should continue our discussion later. I believe Detective Silver may have something on the case we are working on," Walker said.

"All right, but we are meeting for lunch," she said as she kissed Walker before she said a few things to Sydney and Gage before she left the room.

The Rangers gathered around in a semicircle around Lucy and Darryl.

"I think we need to look beyond the bank," Lucy said. "We need to look at the businesses above the bank."

"I looked into the businesses of the bank, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary," said Trivette.

"What makes you think one of those was the real target?" Walker asked.

"During the hostage situation, the leader went into the bank offices and was gone for awhile."

"There isn't a set of stairs or an elevator from anywhere inside the bank to the businesses upstairs," Sydney pointed out.

"We are definitely missing something," Darryl replied with a frown, knowing that his partner had a way of finding the right path to go down to solve the case.

"If it wasn't about stealing the bank and was really about the offices upstairs, why did they go into the bank?" Sydney asked.

"What if it wasn't about stealing money from the bank or something from the offices upstairs? Maybe they wanted access to the bank's computer systems?" Gage suggested.

"I already had that checked out. The computer system at the bank wasn't accessed during that time." She shook her head. "It has to do with something with the businesses above the bank. There is a financial planning office and an accounting office owned by Kurt Kingly. I looked into it last night but I don't have the computer skills to dig really deep," she said looking at Trivette.

"Well, I'll take a look into is businesses and see what I can find," Trivette said with a smile as he walked around to his desk and sat down.

"Well, I know that he is linked to several new projects downtown and just outside the city," Gage said as he went to his own desk and sat down, his fingers flying over the keyboard.

"Let's find out where Kingly is," Sydney said as she picked up the phone on her desk.

"While you guys are doing that, Darryl and I are going to the bank and the offices."

Lucy walked into the bank and saw that there were several new tellers. Darryl held the door open for a woman before he followed her inside.

"So, do you think the manager will allow you to search the place without a warrant," Darryl asked as he stood beside her.

She turned her head and looked at him with her darkened eyes.

"Right. Never mind."

One of the tellers walked up to them with a broad smile on her face. "Good afternoon. I'm Wanda. How may I be of service to you today?"

"I would like to see the manager, please," Lucy said.

The woman's eyes studied them closely. Her eyes lingered on Darryl before she answered. "You will have to wait. He's with someone."

Lucy nodded as the woman turned around and went to help another customer.

The bank manager named Frank Green came out of his office and after speaking to Wanda, he walked briskly up to Lucy and Darryl. "Good afternoon, Detective Silver."

"Hello, Mr. Green. This is my partner, Detective Sun," she introduced while the two men shook hands.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Detective Sun. May I suggest we go into my office?"

She nodded her head and they followed the bank manager into his office. The office was neat and orderly, with several artificial plants strategically placed where it didn't look overdone.

"Please take a seat," he said as he motioned to the two chairs before him.

They remained standing. "Is it all right if we take a look around?" Lucy asked.

Mr. Green's smile faded and he ran a hand through his peppered hair. "Detective, I know that you were involved in the situation that occurred and that has been resolved."

"There is more to the case than I can say, Mr. Green."

She locked eyes with the bank manager and kept those walnut brown eyes that matched the color of his desk. She held on until he turned away.

"Very well but I must ask you not to disturb my customers."

"Of course, we are going to be here in the offices."

His mouth opened but then he closed it and nodded his head.

The two detectives stood up and went to the walls. They started on opposite sides of the wall and began to tap on the walls searching for an opening. Mr. Green was surprisingly silent during the search.

Once they had determined that nothing was off in that office, they moved on to the next with Mr. Green following behind them.

She ran her hand over the wall and tapped it a few times. She moved her hand over about three feet and tapped again but it sounded the same. Across the room, Darryl was working near a file cabinet when a hollow sound reached her ears.

"There's a hollow space behind this wall," Darryl said. "It must be at least three feet by three feet."

"What?" Mr. Green exclaimed.

"There must be some way to open it," Lucy said as she tried, but nothing happened. She turned around and looked at Mr. Green. "Mr. Green, do you happen to have blueprints for the bank on the premises?"

"No," he replied shaking his head.

"Thank you, Mr. Green."

"Let's head upstairs and see if we can find a hidden doorway," she said, feeling that tingle in her fingertips that told her that they were on the right track.
