Chapter 14: Pacing and Fighting

"Anything yet?" Gage asked for the tenth time as he continued his pacing in front of Sydney's desk.

"No, he hasn't made a call yet," Darryl responded while sitting at Trivette's desk monitoring the computer for any signs of Kurt making a call.

"Gee, Gage, you're more anxious than Lucy is and she's the one that came up with the idea," Sydney remarked.

"I am not," he replied, stopping in front of Sydney's desk. He grinned when she gave him a look, then she rolled her eyes at him. He went back to pacing and wondered if the detective's plan would actually work.

"When do you think Walker and Trivette will be back?" Sydney asked deliberately changing the subject.

"They probably went to CD's for lunch after testifying. What is taking so long? I thought you said he would call his son right after you left?" Gage asked, running a hand through his hair as he came closer to Lucy who was standing in front of the coffee table.

Lucy placed a hand on Gage's arm, stopping him in his tracks. "Patience, Gage, patience. I may have been wrong about the time, but he will call his son."

Gage sighed and nodded his head. "What do you think? Do you think he was involved in this the whole time or just his son?"

Lucy removed her hand from his arm and shook her head. "I don't know yet. Not until we speak to the son."

He didn't understand how the emerald-eyed detective could be so calm. She wasn't anxiously pacing or cracking her knuckles or doing any of a number of things that people do when he or she is anxious. She was just standing and drinking coffee. Extra strong coffee.

Darryl leaned back in the chair. "We still haven't figured out what they did. He won't allow us to look at his computers."

"Maybe it was to hide embezzlement or to steal client information or any number of reasons," the dark-haired Ranger theorized.

Different ideas were going through Gage's mind but he didn't want to choose the wrong one.

"Finally!" Sydney exclaimed.

"What?" He asked as he stopped in front of his partner's desk.

"Some information on Nicholas. Of course, I don't know if it will be useful or not."

"Well, what is it?" Gage asked impatiently.

She raised an eyebrow at him before she returned her eyes back to the monitor. "On the surface, his father's been paying his bills for him, but I looked further into his past and discovered that he once worked at the Roman Auto Parts."

"Let me guess, chop shop?" Darryl remarked.

She nodded her head. "You got it. The only thing about it was that we could never make a case against them. Every time we thought we had something on them, the evidence would vanish."

"Inside information," Gage replied with a snap of his fingers.

Lucy bit her lip. "Or someone with lots of influence."

"What does this have to do with Kingly Jr. now?" Gage asked.

"Maybe everything. Maybe nothing," Sydney sighed. "I think it would help if we get a client list from Kingly Sr."

"We can ask that when go see Kingly Jr." Darryl stood up and out from behind the absent Ranger's desk.

Gage looked at the excited detective. "Found him?"

"Yup."

Sydney stood up. "Need some backup?"

"That is mighty kind of you to offer and we accept," Darryl replied with a slight bow.

"Wow, you're very polite, Detective Sun," Sydney said as she opened the drawer of her desk and pulled out her gun.

"Let's head out," Gage said as he shook his head and walked out the door. He hoped taking Nicholas in wouldn't be as difficult as it was to find him, but he wasn't willing to bet money on it.

Lucy rode in Darryl's car while Gage drove his car with Sydney sitting beside him. She wanted him to go faster, but knew he was going as fast as he dared.

He looked over at her. "So, what's the plan?"

"We go in and talk to Kingly while Sydney and Gage keep an eye outside."

"You're anxious to speak with him."

She nodded her head. "Yes. He's knows about the bank and Ana's death. It's time to resolve these two cases."

They arrived at their destination. The two Rangers parked next to them. She nodded to them and Sydney waved back.

The bar in front of them had seen better days and it was surprising to Lucy with its obvious code violations that it hadn't been shut down yet. She followed her partner to the front door. She glanced back at the Rangers who were waiting a few moments for her and Darryl to see if Nicholas would come out peacefully.

Her partner opened the creaky door and motioned with a wave of his hand for her to enter first.

She blinked her eyes to adjust from the bright, sunny day to the dank and darkness of the bar's interior. Her next problem was the assault on her sense of smell. The bar had the same smells of ever bar they had been in. Of course, this bar had an added stench of vomit, sweat, stale beer, and cheap whiskey.

"There he is," Darryl said.

She casually looked in the direction that her partner had indicated with minimal hand movement and saw in the flesh the picture that she had studied so she could spot him.

Nicholas had his long hair tied back into a ponytail. He had one beer in front of him while he was talking to a girl that was sitting next to him. He had a diamond stud in his both of his ears.

Lucy didn't have to be a detective to be able to see that the girl wasn't more than eighteen and didn't belong within five miles of this place.

"Nicholas Kingly?" Lucy called out once she had gotten closer to the table.

Nicholas quickly stood up from his chair. He turned toward the girl and shoved her and her chair over, causing her to crash to the floor, landing with a loud thud and a scream.

Darryl leaped forward, and bent down to check on the girl. Lucy saw the shaking girl nod her head as she rubbed her elbow and held back tears.

Nicholas looked around at the men around him, pointed at Lucy and Darryl. "Get them!"

"Really?" Lucy sighed as she looked at her partner.

Darryl nodded his head. "Yup."

A dozen men rushed at them with fists in the air.

Lucy took her gun out of its holster, shut off the safety and pointed it at the ceiling. She fired off a shot. The men stopped in their tracks.

"Good. You all have the common sense not to attack two detectives who carry guns."

"Well, lady, we have guns too," a man with a scraggly beard, remarked as he pulled out a gun.

"Oh, well that changes everything. Doesn't it, partner?"

"Yup," Darryl said as he holstered his gun.

Lucy kept one eye on her partner and the other on the men coming at them. She couldn't wait to get her hands on Nicholas even if she had to fight a dozen men or two dozen.

Gage stared at the bar. He and Sydney had watched the two detectives enter through the front door. He wondered if Nicholas would come in peacefully.

"So, what do you think?" His partner asked.

"What do I think about what?" Gage asked turning his head slightly so he could look at his partner.

"About the case?'

"If this case was a book and I would say it would be about twenty or twenty five chapters long. I would hope that it would be on, chapter fourteen or fifteen. That way, it would be a little more than half way over. It seems to be dragging on and on. Don't you hate books that never get to the point?"

Sydney pursed her lips. "I was talking about whether we should check on the detectives," she said as she waved her right hand towards the bar.

"Oh, right. Of course," Gage replied as he opened the car door, stepped out and closed the door.

He saw his partner shaking her head and mumbling to herself, which caused him to grin, but he made it vanish when she looked at him.

He cleared his throat. "My turn to take the back."

She nodded her head as they neared the entrance to the bar.

Before Gage could head to the corner of the building, they heard a gunshot coming from inside the building.

He exchanged a look with his partner as he withdrew his weapon. "No time for the back."

"Nope," she replied removing her gun from its holster rushing toward the door.

He was right behind her as they stood on either side of the entrance. He nodded his head, and Sydney entered first. "Texas Rangers, hands where we can see them!"

"My hands are full right now," Lucy remarked as she finished putting the handcuffs on a man that needed to trim his scraggly beard, hair and probably a long shower.

"Same here," Darryl added as he motioned for two handcuffed men to move.

"We missed the fight?" Gage said disappointedly as Darryl nodded his head.

Sydney lowered her weapon. "What was that gunshot?"

"This guy," Lucy replied indicating the man that she just finished handcuffing. "Tried to shoot my partner. Fortunately, all he took out was a bottle of cheap whiskey. Should be a crime to carry that stuff."

Gage's eyes met her fiery green ones.

"I take it you didn't get a chance to cover the back," Lucy said but not as a question.

Gage's shoulders slumped a little. "Yeah, sorry about that."

She sighed. "That means that he went out the back."

"Nicholas?" Sydney asked.

"Yeah," Darryl answered dejectedly.

"Damn. He got away," Gage said as he holstered his gun. He wondered if anything would do their way during this case. He saw Lucy turn her and look toward a table where a young girl was sitting, her face pale and her eyes wide.
