Chapter 18: Case Closed

Gage settled into the uncomfortable chair in the interrogation room. He turned his head slightly to look at his partner sitting next to him. He could see that she was resisting jumping across the table to hit the smug Nicholas Kingly that sat across from them.

He cleared his throat when his partner turned on the recorder and stated the usual information for interrogations. When she was finished, he focused his steely gaze on the man handcuffed to the table. "You have been busy, Mr. Kingly. You've orchestrated a bank robbery, which resulted in a hostage situation but was really a decoy for stealing private information from your own father's company. You murdered at least two people and wounded a detective."

"You are accusing me of doing such things?" He asked as he shook his head in disbelief. "I would never do such things. You obviously have the wrong man."

Gage's eyes narrowed slightly as he clenched his fist, thankful that it was underneath the table so Kingly wouldn't notice.

"I'm glad that the detective will make it," he added derisively.

Sydney shot the man a disgusted look. "The gun that you used to shoot Detective Sun, turns out to be the same gun that killed Ana Welles and your father," she stated.

"What a coincidence," Kingly replied. "I happened to find that gun. Whoever killed them must've dropped it."

He cleared the image of punching Kingly in the stomach out of his mind and focused on the interview. He had a job to do and he wanted to make sure that this guy was going to behind bars for the rest of his life. "I bet your prints are the only ones on it."

"The real killer may have worn gloves," he retorted with an indifferent shrugging of his shoulders. "I hope that you two find the real killer. Besides, I don't know an Ana Welles."

"You dated Ana Welles in high school," Sydney pointed out and when he shrugged again in response, she added, "She was four weeks pregnant when you killed her."

He raised his head up a little. "That's too bad," he replied, shaking his head.

"Well, when you are sitting in court and the jury hears that you killed a woman who was pregnant with your child, I'm sure that will be the final nail in your coffin," Sydney said. "The death penalty will definitely be on the table."

Kingly sighed loudly and flexed his fingers. "You officers of the law don't need me to go to court. You've already decided that I'm guilty." He leaned forward and lowered his voice. "I am innocent until proven guilty and my innocence will be proven."

Gage leaned toward the man, his anger rising to the surface. "The only thing that will be proven is that you set up the bank job, stole information from your father's business, killed your father, killed your pregnant girlfriend and shot a detective. All of this won't be hard to prove to a jury."

Sydney stood up. "I think that's all, don't you Gage?"

"Yeah," Gage replied as he stood up. "That's all. We'll have you sent to your cell now. Get used to it."

He followed his partner out of the room and he even slammed the door behind him, to vent his frustration. It didn't help.

"He didn't give us anything," Gage said.

Sydney turned around, her eyes flashing. "He may not have given us anything, but we will make certain that he pays for all of his crimes. We have the gun and it was in his possession."

He nodded his head. "You're right. Alex will throw everything she has at him so at least he won't be able to spit through a chain link fence to the outside of the prison and at the most, he'll get the death penalty."

He heard Sydney's cell ring and remained silent while she answered it. He saw a victorious smile cross across her face. He was glad to see that his partner's mood had improved. He waited to find out why her mood had improved.

Darryl sat down on the couch, careful not to jostle his injured shoulder. He was glad to be home. The bullet had gone through his shoulder, so the doctor didn't have to dig it out. He had to have it stitched up, prescribed an anti-biotic and pain medication. He would still have to have some physical therapy, but the doctor said he was lucky.

His partner stepped into the room, with a glass of water in one hand and his medication in the other.

"So, Malha's coming back tomorrow?" Lucy said as she took a seat on the couch next to him, handing him his pills that he promptly popped in his mouth and then accepted the glass of water with a nod of thanks.

Once he swallowed the pills and set the glass on the side table next to him. "Yeah, she's anxious to get back."

"I bet. She's angry with me, isn't she?"

He grinned and shook his head. "No, she knows that you have my back just as I have yours."

She nodded her head, but he couldn't decipher the look on her face. His partner was hard to read at times but he hoped she would be more open with him.

"You don't need to stay here with me," Darryl said after a few minutes of silence.

She shrugged her shoulders. "Well, I figure you could use a little company."

"It's not about keeping me company, is it?" He asked suspiciously with a raised eyebrow. "It's about you avoiding all of the heinous and time-consuming paperwork?"

A small smile came to her lips. "Of course not. I just want to make sure that you get better and don't strain yourself," she said, waving her hand to brush away his suspicions. "Doing some paperwork though would keep your mind off your shoulder."

They both laughed. He was glad to see that his partner was loosening up, even if it was a little bit.

Lucy cleared her throat. "So, we never got to finish that conversation the other day."

He nodded his head knowing that his partner wouldn't let it go. "Are you sure I should talk about it now? I've taken some pretty heavy painkillers."

She locked her eyes on his as she settled more comfortably in her seat. "Then you won't hold anything back."

His eyes narrowed. "This was your plan, wasn't it?"

She answered his question with a mischievous smile.

He sighed as he looked away, difficult memories coming to him but he turned back to face her.

"My sister, Gabriela got involved with Jason Vice a little over seven years ago. He got her involved in drugs. Cocaine to be exact."

"I can see why you hate the guy."

"Yeah. There's more to it than that," he replied before he continued with his story. "She was arrested for robbing a jewelry store. She was addicted and needed the money to buy drugs. She had already sold everything she owned and had borrowed money from our parents and me before any of us knew about her addiction. It was a shock when I got the call that my baby sister had been arrested."

He looked up at the ceiling, painful memories swirling around in his mind. "She wanted me to make it all go away. I couldn't because I knew that she had to face the consequences and get herself clean or else she would be in a coffin instead of prison."

"She hated you for not helping her," his partner said, more as a statement than a question.

He gave an affirmative nod of his head.

"She got out of prison a few months ago. She refuses to speak to me."

"I'm sorry," she replied softly.

He shrugged his shoulders, knowing that the relationship with his sister was at the bottom and he had no idea if they would be able to bring it back up.

"What about Vice?" She asked.

"Vice was watched by the DEA for months, but he was careful," he answered, unable to keep the extreme hatred out of his voice. "No one would testify against him and he kept himself clean. At least, clean by all appearances. I have no doubt that he's still dirty. "

"I'll help you get him," Lucy promised.

Lucy's cell phone rang, so she excused herself and went into the other room.

He felt his body relax. Telling his partner about his sister had lifted a weight from his shoulders. He should have listened to Malha when she told him to tell Lucy, but she had understood that it would take time. Of course, he hadn't been partners with her for too long and was surprised that he had even mentioned it. His partner was good at digging out information from people. That is what made her a great detective.

She returned to the room with a triumphant look in her eyes.

He cocked his head, waiting for her speak.

"That was Sydney. They got the ones that shot at us. Bill and Harry Simpson, brothers, who are muscles for hire."

"How did they find out?"

"They had a joint case with the DEA in which the two brothers were arrested for selling illegal firearms. They checked the weapons and Connie matched the ballistics to a couple of the guns that had their fingerprints on them. Walker and Trivette spoke with them and got them willing to testify that Kingly hired them to try and kill us."

"We owe Connie," he said.

"She loves Thai food," his partner pointed out.

"That's good to know," he said as he nodded his head. "Once I'm up to it, we'll take Connie out for Thai food."

Lucy nodded her head in agreement. "Well, I'll leave you to rest," she said as she stood up and walked toward the door.

She turned around before she opened the door. "By the way, there is going to be a celebration at the Walker's ranch. Once Malha is back and you are up for it, of course."

"A party?" He asked, as he cocked an eyebrow. "You're going to go to a party? I thought you weren't one for partying?"

She tilted her head slightly, her lips pursed in thought. "Yeah, but things change. Besides, you know that if I don't go, I won't hear the end of it from you, Gage or Sydney."

He laughed as she waved goodbye before she left.

He leaned back, making sure that he didn't aggravate his shoulder. He was glad that this case was finished. He looked at the clock and saw that it would be at least ten hours before his wife returned home. He decided that he may was well sleep. It wouldn't be too long before another case came along and he wanted to be ready.
