Ugh, woke up sick this morning. I'm going to try my best to keep the update on schedule this week.
Okay.. Here you guys go!
Previously... On The River
"Hello?" She muttered.
"Callie?" The voice said worriedly.
"Daniel? What's wrong?" She said, sitting up.
"It's Barbara..."
Chapter 36
"Where is she?" Callie asked looking down at her sleeping blonde.
"She's.. she's lying down right now. I've called an ambulance. They're on there way. She said not to let Arizona know, but I know she wants her here."
"What's wrong with her Daniel?" Callie whispered, so she wouldn't wake Arizona. Getting up off the ground and walking towards her sister and James.
"She's having chest pains Callie, she says she thinks she's having a heart attack. Can you get bug here? Please? I know if something were to happen, Arizona would never forgive herself for not being here."
"Take her to Seattle Grace, ask to be treated by Dr. Yang. I'll contact Cristina and have her at the hospital waiting. We'll get her through this Daniel, Yang's the best there is. We're on our way now. We should be at the hospital by eight, nine at the latest."
"Thank you, Callie. I.. I got to go the ambulance just pulled in."
"Okay, give her our love, we'll be there as soon as we can dad." She said, hanging up the phone. Callie had taken to calling Daniel dad in the weeks leading up to the trail. It kind of just came natural to her.
"Aria." Callie said, bending down to shake her sister awake. "Aria wake up." She said louder.
"What?" She said, not even opening her eyes.
"Aria go wake daddy up, tell him to get the his jet ready. Arizona and I have to leave now." She said, walking back over to wake Arizona. "Tell him I want it up and ready in twenty minutes." Dialing Cristina's number she waited as it began to ring.
"What.. what's wrong?" Aria asked, getting up.
"It's Arizona's mom. Her dad said he thinks she's having a heart attack. Please Aria."
"Okay.." Aria said pulling out her phone to try to get him in the phone quicker, while she ran back up to the house.
"Cristina." Callie said, hearing her answer.
"This better be good Torres, I just came in from a thirty two hour shift."
"Cristina, I need you. Arizona and I are still in Miami. Her dad just called me and said that Barbara is having chest pains. Can you plea..."
"Where is she?" She said, cutting Callie off.
"She's at home, I just got off the phone with Daniel. The ambulance just arrived a minute ago, I told him to have her sent to Seattle Grace and ask for you."
"Okay, I'll meet them at the bay."
"Cristina.."
"I'll do everything I can Callie. Just worry about getting back here. Let me worry about Barb." She said, hearing the worry in her friends voice. Their group of friends had came to consider Arizona's parents as their own. Barbara and Daniel were the only parental figures that had around them and they all found themselves turning to them when needing advice.
"Arizona." Callie whispered, brushing the blondes hair out of her face. "Baby. Wake up." She said shaking the blonde.
"No... I'm sleeping." She whined.
"Arizona. Get up." Callie said, her tone hard.
Hearing the firm tone in her fiancés voice, she opened her eyes to look up at her. Seeing the fear in her fiancés eyes. "What's wrong, Calliope?"
"Just get up, I'll explain when we get back to the room. Come on." She said helping Arizona up.
"What about everything here?" She said following Callie.
"Someone else will take care of it."
"Calliope stop." She said, grabbing her shoulders. Stopping her from going any further. "What is wrong?" She said, seeing the fear in her eyes again, "Tell me, you're scaring me, Callie."
Sighing. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to scare you. Lets just get upstairs and I'll explain okay?"
"No, tell me now." She demanded.
"We need to leave honey." She said, walking them over to a chair. Sitting Arizona down on a lounger, she knelt in front of her fiancé.
"Why? Our flight isn't until noon?"
"Baby." She sighed again. She was afraid of how Arizona was going to take this news. "Your dad called a few minutes ago." She said, seeing Arizona knit her brows.
"Wh.. It's like what? Two o'clock in the morning in Seattle. What could he..?" She stopped, her foggy brain finally realizing why the only reason someone would call in the middle of the night. "Tell me?" She demanded, with tears brimming her eyes.
"It's about your mom, sweetie." She sighed, taking Arizona's hands, trying to give her all the strength she needed.
Shaking her head at her fiancés words, "No." Her whole body felt like it was going numb.
"Arizona.."
"No Calliope." She stated, tears falling down her cheeks.
Hearing the sadness present in her fiancés voice, she knew she needed to explain before she cried right along with her fiancé. "Your dad said she's having bad chest pains and he called an ambulance for her." Callie said, seeing Arizona swallow hard. "We need to hurry and pack. I'm going to get you to her okay baby. I'm having my dad getting his jet ready. We should be wheels up within thirty minutes." She said, brushing the hair out of Arizona's face.
"I.." Shaking her head. "I can't do this again, Calliope. I can't." She said, her eyes glazing over with tears, she felt like the was in a fog.
"Hey. Look at me, whatever you can't do, I will. That's how this works, right?" She said sitting up on her knees to make herself eye level with her blonde. She wiped the tears out of the corners of Arizona's eyes, "I have Cristina on her way to the hospital. She's the best there is. Whatever is wrong with mom she'll find it, okay?" All Arizona could do was nod. "Lets run upstairs and pack our things real quick. Do you want to change before we leave?"
"No, can you do it? I just want to sit her for a minute.."
"Of course, honey. Will you be okay out here by yourself?" She asked, not really wanting to leave her alone. But she knew Arizona was in no state of mind to help her.
"Yeah. Just hurry, Calliope." She said blankly.
"I will, baby." She said, kissing her on the forehead. "Let's not think the worst. This could be a number of things. Kay? Your mama's strong." She said cupping her face. "I'll be back in a few." She said running inside to pack their belongings. Running into their father as he came out of this office.
"Mija?" He said, seeing her rush by. "Everything's set. The jet should fueled and ready in ten minutes."
"Thank you daddy." She said, rushing up the stairs. "Dad?" She stopped at the top of the stairs.
"Yeah?"
"Can you go be with her until I get finished here?" She asked. "She's on the veranda. I don't want her to be alone."
"Sure thing." He said walking towards the kitchen and out the French doors to the veranda. Seeing Arizona was sitting on the edge of the lounge chair. Sitting down quietly beside her, he pulled her into him and just held her as she stared out into the ocean holding on tight to him. Neither having anything to say.
"Hey, baby." Callie said coming back out about five minutes later. "You ready?" She asked walking up to her dad and fiancé.
"That was fast." She said looking up to her.
"Yeah, Aria had already started packed before I got up there. We just threw everything into the suit cases." She said, taking her hand. "They are already packed in the car. You ready?" Callie asked. The blonde only nodded her head. "Cristina texted me and said the ambulance was still about five minutes out. But she's at the bay waiting, okay?"
"Yeah."
"Thanks Daddy." Callie said, leading Arizona towards the front of the house.
"Calliope. There will be a car waiting on you as soon as you land. It will take you straight to the hospital. I'll make arrangements for your bags to be delivered to your home." Carlos said, following the two women out to the waiting car.
"Thanks Daddy." Callie said, helping Arizona into the car.
"Thanks for everything Carlos." Arizona said flatly. Her mind was blank, she couldn't focus on anything at the moment. She was on auto pilot. Carlos and Aria were around her talking to Callie and maybe her too, she wasn't even sure anymore.
"You're welcome, sweetheart." He sais, leaning to see Arizona sitting in the back of the car.
"Hey." Aria said, walking up the other side of the car and opening the door where Arizona was sitting. Squatting down she looked at the expressionless blonde. Smiling sadly, "Everything's going to be fine Z. You'll see."
Nodding her head, "Thanks for spending the week with us Aria. I've really enjoyed it." She said, turning and giving her a small smile.
"Take care." Aria said , leaning in to hug the blonde. "Love you guys."
"I will. We love you to Aria." Arizona said as Callie sat beside her.
"Call us when you find something out." Carlos said.
"I will daddy. Thanks for everything." She said as her father closed her door and patted the roof of the car, signaling for the driver that they were ready to go.
Looking over to her frazzled fiancé, the sight broke Callie's heart. "Come here, baby." Callie said, pulling the quiet blonde closer to her to holding her tight. "Everything's going to be okay." She soothed as they made their way to the airport.
Four hours into their flight, the pilot let Callie know they were ahead of schedule and should be there by seven a.m. Seattle time. Looking at her watch, seeing it was just turning six a.m. on the west coast, she let out a sigh of relief. Looking over at Arizona who was lying down on the couch with a blanket thrown over top of her, she walked over to sit on the floor in front of her. Arizona had cried herself to sleep within the first thirty minutes of being in the air, waking up only minutes ago. Stroking her hair as the blonde just simply laid there staring off into space. She still hadn't said much of anything. Callie got a few yes or no's out of her, but that was about it. Arizona wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone, even if it was only Callie.
"Arizona?" Callie said, trying to get her to talk to her. Putting her face close to the blondes. "Talk to me baby. You've not said much since I woke you on the beach."
"I don't know what to say, Callie." She said as a tear rolled down her face, finally looking her fiancé in the eyes, "I just want to talk to my mom." She cried, finally losing it, wrapping her arm around Callie's neck, pulling her in closer to her.
"Oh baby... I know.. I know sweetie. Come here, let me hold you." Callie said, pulling Arizona to the floor with her. Sitting on Callie's lap, Arizona buried her head into her chest and cried. Rocking them back and forth, "We don't know what's wrong. Chest pains can mean a number of different things. You're a doctor, you know that. But we're always taught to prepare for the worst. Feeling Arizona nod in her chest. Let's not worry, until we have to okay?" She said rubbing Arizona's back. "The pilot said we're about forty-five minutes out. I'll get you to your mom, okay?" Needing something to take Arizona's mind off her mother, "Did I tell you that James told me that he was going to ask Aria to marry him?"
"No." She said, sniffing.
"Yeah, when he brought me to the club Thursday night. He asked me if I'd be okay with him asking my sister to marry him."
"What did you tell him?" She said sitting up.
"Well, I wasn't in the best shape to be asked that question at the time. But I asked him if she was the cheese to his macaroni." She laughed, causing the blonde to let out a small laugh.
"You didn't." That had been a line that she had used to propose to Callie.
"I did." She giggled, stroking the blondes hair. "I asked him, if she was the first thing he thought about when he woke up and the last thing he though about when he went to sleep. I asked if his day was consumed with thoughts of her and if he'd move heaven and earth just to see her smile." She said.
Arizona knew Callie was thinking about herself while asking James those questions. "And he said?" She asked, laying her left arm across the back of Callie's shoulders and resting her forehead on the side of Callie's head as she continued to hold her.
"He told me to quit describing my feelings for you." She laughed.
"He already knows you so well." She said kissing her on the cheek.
"I told him I'd be proud to call him my brother-in-law. I think they make a good couple."
"Yea." "She said, running her fingers through dark brown hair. "Thank you, Callie." Arizona said, thankful the her fiancé knew how to take her mind of things.
"You're welcome, sweetie." She said as the stewardess came to tell them they'd be landing shortly.
After their landing, the girls quickly exited the jet and loaded into the waiting car and headed straight to the hospital. Callie texted Cristina on Barbara's condition but never received a reply. Deciding to give Daniel a try, she quickly dialed his number.
"Hello?"
"Daniel, it's Callie. How is she?"
"I don't know anything yet, Callie. They took her back for some tests a while ago. Cristina said she would let me know as soon as she found something out."
"Okay, well we're only a few minutes out. We'll be there as soon as we can. I'll see you in a few." She said, hanging up the phone.
"What did he say?"
"He said he hasn't heard anything yet. Cristina took her back for some tests and will let him know as soon as she finds anything out." Callie said, seeing Seattle Grace in the distance.
"Is that a good sign? That means the EKG didn't show anything abnormal. Right? If they're still doing more tests they're not finding anything? If it showed something they would have some kind of information for my dad wouldn't they?"
"I'm not sure." Callie said, scratching her head. "It's been so long since I did my cardio rotation." She said as the driver pulled up to the front of the hospital. "Come on babe, let go find Cristina." she said, helping Arizona out of the car. Walking into the hospital they quickly made a B-line for the Cardio wing on the fourth floor. Seeing Daniel in the waiting room, the girls stopped to speak to him.
"Daddy." Arizona sighed, collapsing in her fathers embrace, crying into his chest.
"Bug." He said, holding onto his daughter as Callie stood back to let them have a little time.
"I'm going to find Cristina and see what's taking so long." She said, leaving the two behind.
"No. Calliope, I want to come with you. I need to see her." Arizona said, catching up with her fiancé.
"Don't you think you should be with your dad, baby. He's been all alone through this?" she said, seeing Daniel standing in the corner worried to death.
"No. I don't want you to leave me." Arizona said, with pleading eyes. "If I can't go with you, I want you to stay here. Please.." She said, looking into brown sorrowful eyes.. "I need you."
Looking back at Daniel and then to her fiancé, internally weighing the situation. "Daniel." Callie said, "Come with us, we're going to find Barbara." she said, waiting for him to catch up. "Hey. Steve." Callie said stopping the intern that was on her service when she quit the hospital months ago. "Seen Yang?" she said, holding Arizona's hand for dear life.
"Room 4024."
"Thanks." Callie said, leading them quickly down the hall to the room. "Stay right here. I'll check and see if she's in here." Callie said, stopping Arizona and Daniel about five feet from the door. Sticking her head in the door, Callie seen Cristina in with a patient. "Dr. Yang." she said, getting both of their attention. "Could I please see you when you're finished here."
"Yes, Dr. Torres." she said, as closed the door back.
"Was it her?" Arizona asked.
"No, your mom wasn't in there honey, but Cristina was. She'll be out in a minute." Callie said, wrapping her arm around Arizona.
Coming out of the room Cristina saw Callie, Arizona and Daniel standing in the hall by the door. "Come with me." she said, leading them down the hall.
"Cristina how is she? Is she okay?" Arizona said, with fear in her voice.
"She's okay for now." She said, leading them to Barbara's empty room. "They took her up for a chest x-ray, she should be back soon.
"Is it a heart attack?" Daniel asked.
"I.." breathing deeply, "I don't know. I've listened to her heart and lungs, ran an EKG, ECG, ECHO, CT, every test I can think of and everything's coming back normal, but shes still complaining with severe pain. Her blood pressure and pulse are high, but I think its mainly from the pain she's in." Cristina said in distressed. She was getting upset because she was unable to find the cause of the women's pain.
The doors of the room pushed open revealing Meredith Grey wheeling Barbara back into her room. "Mama." Arizona cried, running to the bed. Seeing her mother with an oxygen mask over her face.
"She's started vomiting when we got her up to x-ray." Meredith said, locking the wheels of the bed. "I put a rush on the films, they should be here.." she was stopped when an intern busted through the doors.
"Here's your scans you ordered, Dr. Yang." the intern said, handing the films over and leaving the room as quick as he came.
Holding the films up to the light, Cristina examined the x-ray. Stepping up behind Cristina, Callie looked over the scan, not seeing anything out of the ordinary. "Well?" she asked after seeing Cristina place the films back in the large envelope.
"Nothing.." Cristina sighed, seeing Arizona bent over the bed whispering to her mom.
"Wait.." Callie said stepping up to the bed to look at Barbara. "How long has she been vomiting, Grey?" she asked, putting the railing of the bed down to sit on the side of the bed.
"About an hour."
"How often?"
"Seven times, since talking her for the scans." Meredith said.
"Mom.." Callie said, getting Barbara's attention. "Does the pain ease up any at all when you vomit." Seeing her nod her head. "For how long." she asked.
Bringing her weak hand up to move the mask covering her nose and mouth, "Just for a minute or so. Then its back full force."
Looking over to the other side of the bed where Arizona was, "Help me sit her up, babe." She said. Pulling Barbara up into a sitting position, "Does this ease up the pain any at all?" she asked her future mother-in-law as she balled her fist and rubbed hard pressured circles in the middle of Barbara's back.
"Yeah… god yes.. that helps.." she said, reaching for the bedpan and emptying the contents of her stomach into the pan again.
"It's okay, Mama. Just get it out." Arizona said, holding the pan closer to her mother.
"Has she had anything for pain?" Callie asked.
"Yeah, I gave her some meds when she first came in, but that's been a while ago.." Cristina said, standing beside Callie.
"Do you think.." Meredith asked, catching on to what Callie was doing.
"Sounds like it." Callie said, laying her back down.
"Mom does it hurt here?" Callie asked, pressing on Barbara's right side under her breast. Seeing her cringe her face. "Yeah, that's very tender." Callie said, feeling her abdomen.
"Get me a portable Ultra Sound stat." Meredith yelled out the door.
"What? What's going on?" Arizona asked, seeing Callie do a number of physical tests on her mother, her mind not registering anything except her mom.
"What did she last eat Dad?" Callie asked Daniel.
"We had chili for dinner."
Looking towards Meredith, "You think so?" Callie asked her friend.
Nodding her head, "Yeah. Push 10 of toradol." Meredith said, taking the ultra sound from the nurse.
Standing from the bed so Meredith could examine Barbara again, Callie looked towards Arizona and Daniel "I'm not a hundred percent sure but I don't think she's having a heart attack. I think she's having a gall bladder attack." she said, walking to stand behind her fiancé. "Back up a little honey, let them work." she said, as Cristina stepped to the other side of the bed to administer the pain meds in Barbara's IV.
"Why.. why do you think that?" Arizona asked, turning in her fiancés arms.
"Well, she has all the signs, tenderness on her right side, chest pain, vomiting. Sometimes it presents itself as a heart attack, but its just the stones trying to move through the duct. It's very painful, I had the same symptoms when I had to have surgery for it. But I already knew what was wrong with me, we have a history of it in my family."
"How do we find out for sure?" Daniel asked, frazzled.
"The ultra sound should show if that's the case." Arizona said into Callie's chest. "I.. I should have thought about that." she said, shaking her head.
"No, you shouldn't have. We didn't know anything babe, except she was having chest pains." she said, hugging her fiancé.
"There." Meredith said, freezing the ultra sound screen. "She's full of stones. Book an OR now and Page Dr. Bailey or Webber, whichever is available. Tell them we have an emergency Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy." she told the nurse standing in the room.
"Right away, Doctor." she said, exiting the room to page an attending.
Sighing heavy, "Oh, thank god.." Arizona mumbled in Callie's neck before breaking the hold and moving to be with her father.
"Barb, can you hear me?" Meredith asked, leaning over the bed above the elder woman.
"Yeah.."
"We've gave you some medicine that should help with the pain and make you relax. You're going to be find, we just need to get that gall bladder out okay." Seeing her nod, she now addressed Daniel. "It's a fairly simple surgery." Meredith said. "We should be in and out in around an hour and after she recovers for a few hours you should be able to take her back home." she smiled, before being crushed in a hug from the man.
"Thank you Meredith."
"You're welcome, Sir." she smiled. "She'll be good as new, Arizona." she said, grabbing the blondes upper arm.
"Thanks Mer."
Minutes later, a team of nurses came and wheeled Barbara off to the OR for her surgery. Leaving Daniel, Arizona and Callie in the waiting room. Looking at the time, seeing it was now one in the afternoon in Miami, "I'm going to call my dad and let him know Barb's going to be fine." Callie said, standing from her seat. "Do you guys want anything while I'm gone?"
"No thank you, honey." Daniel said, sitting beside his daughter.
Sitting on the edge of her seat, Arizona shook her head, "No. Thank you though." she said, sitting back in the seat.
"I wont be long." Callie said, bending down and quickly pecking pink lips. "Love you."
"Love you too." she said, squeezing Callie's hand, before releasing it.
"So.." Daniel said, taking off his glasses and putting the magazine down he was reading. Taking his daughters hand. "I see she asked." he said, turning Arizona's left hand over to see the pink diamond ring on his daughters finger.
"You knew?"
"She told me her plans that night before you left, when everyone came over for dinner." he said, inspecting the ring. "Wow. A Verragio. That's an expensive ring."
"It is?" she said, looking down at her ring. Smiling, she know Callie always wanted her to have the best, even though she was content with a knock off.
"Yeah, I was going to buy your mother one for our anniversary one year. Lets just say it was way out of my price range." he said, wrapping his arm around his daughter. "So, tell me. Were you surprised?"
Laughing, "Yeah, I totally didn't see it coming. She had mentioned wanting to go out on the yacht, I didn't think nothing about it. She's always doing things like that, so when she got down on her knee." she sighed, remembering how beautiful Callie was that night. "I was blown away. I never expected her to propose too." she said, leaning her head on her dads shoulder. "You are going to walk me down the isle right, daddy?"
"I wouldn't miss it for the world bug." he said. "I love Callie like she was my own, you know that right?"
"Yeah.."
"Its funny, you know. Tim had always had a crush on her."
"Well, when we met, she told me she had a crush on Tim." she giggled. "But of course, that was before she laid those brown eyes on this beauty." she said, gesturing to herself.
"Of course it was." he laughed, rubbing his hand up and down her arm.
"We had a huge fight, Thursday. It was so stupid, daddy."
"What happened?"
"We were going out to a club with her sister, Aria and her boyfriend James. I dressed and came out of the bathroom and she blew up on me about my outfit."
"It wasn't about the outfit thought was it?" Daniel asked, he know Callie enough to know she would never dictate what her daughter wore or did.
"How did you know?"
"Well, honey. Most fights are never about what you're really mad about. What was she upset about?"
"We were out to dinner with everyone and Lucia asked when the big day was. I told her that subject was not up for discussion right now." she shrugged, "And Calliope heard me say that and thought I wasn't ready for marriage yet. I was so mad, Daddy when she started whining about my outfit. So mad that I left in the middle of the fight. I couldn't be in the same room with her. What kind of person does that? Leaves in the middle of a fight with someone you love. I mad her cry by walking out."
"Bug, its not going to be the first time or the last time you both make each other cry. No relationship is perfect. You know that. And I've learnt after many years of marriage, sometimes it's best to walk away for a while before you say something you can never take back. That's what being in a relationship is all about honey. Picking and choosing your battles. Did she apologize to you?"
"Yeah, she found me on the beach and apologized and finally told me why she was upset."
"Did you apologize for walking out?"
"Yes." she said.
"Did you talk about it?"
"Mmhmm.. a little at first, but we talked again after we got back home."
"That's all you can do, Arizona. Admit when you were wrong and don't boast when you're right. Just move on from your mistakes. Did you know, one of your mothers and my worst fights were over a dinner plate?"
"No." she giggled. "That's ridiculous."
"It wasn't at the time." He laughed. "She didn't talk to me for two whole days."
"What happened?"
"We hadn't been married long. I came home from a long frustrating day at work one day and she had this nice candle lit dinner waiting for me on the table and I sat down to eat and I noticed she had used the flowered plates. I despised those plates. What man would want to eat out of something like that." He laughed. "Now mind you, I was still young and wreckless at the time.
"You? Wreckless?" she giggled at her father. "Never." she loved when her father would tell old stories.
"You want to hear the story or not?" he nudged her with his elbow. "She had fixed her spaghetti, which meant she slaved over the stove all day with her famous sauce just to make me happy. But when I sat down, I seen the plate she used and that just set me off. I started arguing with her about the plate and I refused to eat the dinner she had worked so hard on and well, your mother was so mad because I didn't appreciate her gesture, she told me that if I didn't eat it, she would make me wear it."
"What happened?"
"Well, let's just say, spaghetti is not a great color on me."
"No.." Arizona laughed, she couldn't imagine her mother doing that to her dad.
"Yeah and then she went and smashed every flowered plate we had before locking herself up in our bedroom for the rest of the night. I tried to get her to let me in.. to apologize, but she wasn't having it. When I woke up for work the next morning on the couch she was still locked up in the room. And again when I got home from work that day I heard the bedroom door slam and she was held up in there for the rest of the night again. I slept on the couch for two nights."
"How did you get her to talk to you again?"
"Well, the next day after work I went out and bought her a new set of flowered plates and went home and wrote her a little love letter, since she wouldn't talk to me and I slipped it under the bedroom door and just sat there with the box of plates in my lap and waited and prayed for her to come out."
"Did she?"
"Yeah, after making me wait another hour. I had my back to the door and had fallen asleep. She slung open that door and I cracked my head on the floor." he laughed. "We both apologized and moved on. I learnt then to never mess with your mother again."
"That doesn't sound like her at all.." she laughed. To her, her parents marriage was picture perfect.
"Well, after that we learned to pick and chose our battles wisely. You see bug, the fight I picked wasn't about the plates at all, I angry with work and I came home and took my anger out on her and she didn't deserve it. And we still eat out of those plates to this day."
"Hey." Callie said, walking back into the waiting lounge. "Sorry I took so long, I know you said you didn't want anything, but when I went outside to call my dad, I seen your favorite deli across the street and thought you might be hungry, seeing that we've not ate since yesterday afternoon. So I ran over and grabbed you your favorite sandwich and a Dr. Pepper." she said, sitting the bag down on the floor and sitting down beside her fiancé.
"Thank you, baby." Arizona said, kissing red lips. "I am getting kinda hungry now that everything's settling down."
"You're welcome sweetie. Have you heard anything about mom?" she asked, opening the bag and handing Arizona her food.
"No not yet." She smiled, she loved how easily Callie had taken to calling her parents mom and dad. It just felt natural. "I love you."
Looking up from her sandwich she had opened in her lap, with her bottom lip in between her teeth, she looked into blue eyes. "I love you too." Her smiled could light up the room.
"Here, dad." Callie said, handing Daniel the bag. "I got you something too. You need to eat."
"Thank you, Callie. I'll just put it to the side for now, I can't eat until I know my Barbie is going to be alright. I'm going to step outside for a few minutes and get some fresh air. You'll come find me if they come?"
"Yeah, we'll find you daddy." Arizona said, taking a drink of her soda.
over an hour later, Daniel was back in the waiting room, sitting with the girls when Dr. Bailey and Dr. Grey came out to find them. "What.. what took so long? Is she okay?" he stood from his chair along with Arizona and Callie. They had been waiting over two hours and Daniel had been pacing the floor, Callie insisting that if anything would go wrong they would have informed them.
"She's doing great. She had a lot of stones, but she should be good as new in no time. We were in there longer than we expected. Her gallbladder was imbedded in her liver, so we had to open her up a little more to dig it out. She'll be in a little more pain that we expected because we had to dig and poke round in there but she'll be find. We usually discharge them after a few hours, but I want to go ahead and keep her overnight as precaution. There taking her to her room now, she's awake but groggy. You can come see her." Bailey smiled.
Picking up their belongings, they followed the doctors the Barbara's recovery room. Walking into the room, Arizona and Callie stood back to let Daniel have his time with her first. Arizona couldn't imagine having gone through that with Callie. Thinking she was having a heart attack on her and possibly dying. She couldn't bare the thought.
"Hi, honey. How are you feeling." Daniel said, giving her a hug.
"I've never been better. What happened?" She asked looking behind Daniel and seeing Meredith and Miranda standing there.
"You don't remember?" He asked.
"I remember having chest pains and you calling the ambulance, but I don't remember much of anything after that."
Stepping up to the bed, "Mrs. Robbins." Meredith smiled. "You were brought in by an ambulance with severe chest pains, Dr. yang and myself done a number of tests on you and we couldn't find anything wrong, but Callie here, suspected a gallbladder attack and so I ran some tests to confirm and rushed you into surgery."
"Callie? She's here? Where's Arizona?" Barbara said, looking around the room.
"I'm right here Mama." She said, stepping up to the other side of the bed. "Don't you remember, we got here before they rushed you into surgery." she said, sitting on the edge of her mothers bed.
"Daniel, you called them didn't you." She glared at her husband. "I told you not to worry them, they were on vacation."
"Shh.. Its okay Mama, we were coming home today, remember?" she said, brushing her mothers hair out of her face.
"Callie?"
"Yes, mom?" she said stepping up behind Arizona.
"Come closer sweetie.." she said motioning for her to come closer. Placing her head down closer to Barbara. "Closer honey. I won't bite" she said as Callie leaned her head down to Barbara's thinking she wanted to whisper something to her. "That clown behind you wants me to tell you he has no penis." she said in a loud tone.
"Mama.."
"Barb.." Daniel and Arizona both echoed out.
"It's okay guys." Callie chuckled. "She doesn't know what she's saying right now." Leaning back down to Barbara, Callie whispered so only Barb could hear "Tell him to take him banana and leave."
Barbs eyes widening at Callie's words. "Calliope Torres." she scolded. "I'll do no such thing." she said pushing the brunette away. "I like his banana. Such a shame though." She sighed, "It would go good with a few berries."
"Eww.. Mom." Arizona laughed. "Enough with the sexual innuendos."
"She seems fine for now, we'll leave you guys alone." Bailey said as her and Meredith exited the room.
"Hey Callie?" Barb asked.
"Yeah?"
"Will you find out what they're giving me and ask for a doggy bag?"
"Yeah mom. I will." She said laughed, placing her hand on top of Barbara's head and giving her a kiss on the forehead. "I'm glad you're okay."
"Me too." The gray haired woman said. "Oh, my." She said, cupping Callie's breasts. "I see why my daughter is a happy woman." She said, giving Callie's boobs a squeeze.
"MOM!" Arizona exclaimed. "Stop groping my fiancé." She said, pulling Callie away from her mother.
"Oh Zona, lighten up."
"It's okay baby." Callie said, sitting in Arizona's lap. "She won't remember any of it in a little while." She said, "Plus it gives us something to tease her about later." She whispered into her ear.
"So have you set a date yet?" Barbara asked, seeing Arizona wrap her arms around Callie's stomach.
"Um.. Not yet. We will soon though, right baby?" She asked the brunette.
"Right." Callie said. "Oh, show her the ring." She said, standing from Arizona's lap.
"Oh.. Mama. Calliope proposed." Arizona gushed, holding her hand up for her mother to see. "Oh a yacht, in the middle of the ocean. Look how beautiful."
"Oh, honey. It is gorgeous." She said, taking her daughters hand. "You really didn't do this ring justice when you described it to me Callie." She said to the brunette. "I'm so happy for you honey." She said, kissing her daughters hand.
"Thank you, Mama. I'm so glad you're okay. You really had me scared." She said stroking her mothers cheek.
"I'm sorry honey, I didn't mean to ruin your trip."
"You didn't mom. It was a perfect vacation." She said, reaching behind her for Callie's hand. "Listen, we're going to go home and unpack and take a little nap. We'll give you some time to rest and be with daddy." Arizona said, squeezing her mothers hand. "We'll come back this evening and spend some time with you. We have tons of pictures to show you. How's that sound?"
"Yeah, I'd like that. Go get some rest honey." She smiled at her daughter. "Give your mama a hug." She said, holding her arms out to her daughter.
"I love you, mom." She said hugging her mother.
"I love you too." Barbara said, hugging her daughter before smacking her in the bottom. "Still soft as the day you were born." She laughed. "I see why Callie's always staring at it."
"Oh, good lord. Daddy, we'll see you later." Arizona said, rolling her eyes at her mom. "Call us if you need anything."
"I will bug." He said, standing from his position on the other side of his wife's bed to hug his daughter. "Maybe if you want to, stop and grab your mom a soft pair of pajamas on your way back in? You know how grumpy she can get when she's not comfy."
"We will." She did, moving to the side so Callie could tell her father goodbye.
"Thank you, Callie." He said hugging the brunette. "You're welcome dad. We'll bring you some dinner later okay?"
"Okay." He said, kissing her on top of the head. "We love you girls."
"We love you too. We'll call before we head back over this evening and see if you need anything else, okay."
"Thanks girls." Barbara chimed in from her spot in the bed.
"Bye mama. We love you."
"Bye baby. Be careful." Barbara said, before her and Callie started out of the room.
"Im sorry I scared you honey." Barbara said to her husband. "Come here, Daniel." Barbara said, trying to scoot over in her bed. "I need you to hold me" Arizona heard her mother tell her father as she shut the door behind her.
You okay?" Callie asked a few feet down the hall, turning to see Arizona was still at the door.
"Yeah." She said, running up to catch up with her fiancé. "I'm perfect." She said, wrapping her arm around Callie's back and sliding the tips of her fingers in the waist band of her fiancée jogging pants. "Thank you, for everything you've done today Calliope." She said, leaning her head on Callie's shoulder as they waited on the elevator. "You stayed cool, calm and collected throughout the whole day, you don't know how that means to me."
"I knew you needed me to stay strong, even though I was dying in the inside. I love your mom."
"What was with her in there." Arizona laughed. "Talking about penis' grabbing your boobs and my ass." She said shaking her head.
"Oh you're one to talk. You acted like that too when you came out of your appendectomy. Well actually you acted like that when your infection had gotten worse and the upped your pain meds." She laughed.
"You mean I felt you up and don't even remember?"
"Yep." Callie laughed, walking into the empty elevator.
"Damn." Arizona huffed, sliding her hands down the back of Callie's pants and pinching her butt.
"Hey!" She yelled swatting her hand away.
"I love you." Arizona giggled.
"I love you too, baby." Callie said, leaning closer to giver her a kiss. "Let's get you home so I can cuddle you and our boys."
"Yey." Arizona bounced in her heels.
This is what happened to me when I was having my gall bladder attack and removal. My parents were pacing the floor because the Dr. told them it would only take 45 minutes to an hour tops and I was in surgery for almost three hours. The attacks are the worst. You actually think you're dying.
