The two celestial wizards sat next to each other eyes closed as they breathed in deeply. Karen walked over to the door and pressed on the red glowing button. The room changed into an island. Where there was once steel metal there was now sand and palm trees. The slightest breeze made the two tributes open their eyes to gaze at the scene before them. Lucy stared at the waves rolling onto the beach. She had never been so close to the water even if it wasn't real. Capricorn circled around them with his hands behind your back.
"In order to increase your magic power, you need to build up your spiritual strength." He said calmly to both mages. Katja looked up at the celestial being.
"Will this help?" The goat spirit nodded. Katja closed her eyes still a bit doubtful. Capricorn continued,
"You need to grow the depth of the container of your magic." Lucy let out a soft grunt but closed her eyes shut.
"Feel the land… the wind… energy… with your flesh. Then breathe as if you're becoming one with nature."
Lucy focused on everything around her and took in a deep breath. She felt a strong surge of power go throughout her body as she released the breath softly. The mark on her hand started to burn slightly as she felt all the energy coming into her body. Capricorn watched as the wind around Lucy speed up. She was soon surrounded by a circle of wind that was dancing like a flame around her.
"That's the way, Miss Lucy. Continue." Lucy felt a large amount of magic being poured out of her. She scrunched up her face as she felt her body grow weaker. The mark on her hand burned even more and she felt a little more strength come into her body.
"Now release a little more magic."
Lucy did as commanded and immediately fell back exhausted. "That's tough."
Capricorn turned his attention to the sea. "One of the strongest celestial mages used this technique to in order to train inside the games." Lucy looked up at him. His tone of voice sounded as if he knew something.
"She won because she deepened her magic power. This training will help you."
It should be helpful.
Is he talking about my mother? Lucy asked as she sat up rubbing her arms. She looked over and saw Katja being coached through what she had just done. The whirlwind she created was strong but not as strong as Lucy's.
Yes, Lucy. Masa answered hesitantly as if he didn't want to answer. Lucy remained silent until Katja fell forward.
"That is tough." Lucy let out a small laugh and nodded her head. The dark blue haired girl stared up at the blonde mage with curious brown eyes. She leaned her small body closer to Lucy's and whispered.
"Lucy-san, is it true?" Lucy looked down confused.
"Huh? What's true?"
Katja sighed. "Your mom was a victor, right?"
Lucy nodded cautiously trying to see where she was getting to.
Patience, Lucy.
"Then is it true that she trained you and that's why you volunteered?"
Lucy opened her mouth shocked. "Of course not!" She yelled. "Where did you hear that?"
Lucy…Masa warned. Lucy ignored him and continued to stare at Katja. The girl fidgeted nervously under Lucy's stare.
"My partner, Rogue, and another tribute named Sting were talking about it. They said that it would be easier to dispose of the weak mages later and deal with the stronger ones first."
Lucy frowned at this. Did this mean they were going to kill their own partners? Katja continued after a short pause.
"They went through the list of tributes and Sting got mad when Rogue mentioned Natsu's name. Rogue said that your mother was a tribute and that you trained with her since you were little. They said you might be able to win this game." Katja ended in a quiet voice.
Lucy sat on the sand silent for a while. Finally she stood up and put her hands on her hips. "Well I can assure you none of that is true. I'm just as experienced in magic as you are."
Katja gave her a small smile then took the hand that was offered to her. "You have to win, Lucy." She said suddenly.
"Katja what…"
"You can win this Fairy Key." She whispered as the beach turned back into a metal room. Capricorn disappeared as Karen came up beside the two wizards.
"It's time to work on your physical training with your partners. Katja go find Rogue he'll show you what weapons you may be able to use." Katja nodded. She gave Lucy another small smile and mouthed 'Promise?'. She lifted her thinly trimmed brown eyebrows in question.
Lucy reluctantly nodded her head. Katja sighed in relief then quickly left the room to find her partner. Lucy felt a hand on her shoulder. She glanced over at her mentor. Karen had a faraway look on her face as she watched the door.
"Katja was thought to be the Fairy Key before you." She said calmly. Lucy turned toward her.
"What?" She asked breathlessly. "You mean I'm not really the Fairy Key."
Karen shook her head. "Oh, no You are the Fairy Key we just thought it was Katja."
Why? Lucy thought tilting her head a bit. Karen sighed.
"After one failed test we knew the Fairy Key would be a celestial mage. Your mother never told us you knew the magic until it failed on Katja."
"What happened?"
"Do you ever notice that Katja wears armbands on her arms." Lucy nodded slowly remembering the pale blue cloths.
"It covers a burn mark from the Fairy pin." She explained. "The Fairy pin is only designed for one person, which is you, if anyone one else tries to use them it causes them extreme pain and leaves a horrible black marking. If they decide to keep the pin and use it again the marking spreads and will eventually drain their magic killing them."
Lucy gasped and quickly turned her head to the door then back to Karen. "Is Katja going to be alright."
Karen nodded. Lucy felt relieved but saddened again. "Until the games." She mumbled.
Lucy…Masa warned. The blonde shook her head. "I guess I should go." She said walking towards the door.
"Lucy," Karen's voice caught her. Lucy looked over her shoulder and saw Karen smiling at her. "Go for the whip." The mentor winked. Lucy smiled slightly then left to go find Natsu.
My mother used a whip, didn't she? She asked Masa who just cleared his throat. Lucy laughed. "Thought so."
Lucy had found out that she was quite handy with a whip. The instructor had taught her how to make the weapon flow with her arm. Lucy had picked up the skill easily and was now practicing on the gray dummies that had an outline of vital organs and weak spots of a human body while her partner sat watching her movements.
She had found Natsu thirty minutes earlier in another virtual room that was filled with water. Suddenly fire burst from the water and into the light blue sky. Lucy had jumped back not expecting it. Natsu swam up minutes later and smiled at her. Lucy smiled back and motioned towards the weapons rack. Natsu nodded wildly as the room changed back into cold metal.
Lucy snapped the whip again and smiled slightly when it wrapped around the dummies neck.
"Oi, Lucy." Natsu whined rubbing his stomach. Lucy panted and wiped her sweaty forehead. Her forearms were starting to ache a bit. She walked over to a silver table while wrapping the whip around her hand. She placed it on the table as a horn sound through the building.
"Attention all tributes, Please line up accordingly to be taken to the Lunch Room." An electronic voice said halting everyone's movements. Slowly the tributes began to form a straight line waiting for whoever was to come for them.
Lucy felt someone brush past her rudely. The person walked past her looking over his shoulder. Lucy stared at the slim tanned boy with a scar over his right eye. He had spiky upward-styled crimson hair with a tuft of hair covering his forehead and two bangs framing his face. Lucy stared at his face and thought he resembled a snake with his slanted cold black eyes, flat nose, and prominent canine teeth that showed when he grinned at her.
"That was Cobra." Natsu said walking in front of her. Lucy hinted a little resentment in his voice towards the boy, but she let it drop. The line began to move into a white room that had trays of food and tables for the tributes. Lucy stayed beside Natsu as the neared the table with full plates of food. Natsu immediately dug in while Lucy took a moment to study the other tributes most were with their partners but their were a group of six who sat together talking and pointing to some of the tributes.
"Those are the Careers." Natsu mumbled between bites (Hope you had a good dinner! Congrats BoywhoCried! You get an excerpt). He lifted his hand and pointed at a tall muscular boy with long spiky black hair, that was slicked back showing his forehead. His red eyes with black slits were cold and annoyed. He had four simple studs over both of his eyes and some down the sides of his nose and forearms. He sat back casually not talking just watching as the rest pointed at certain people.
"That's Gajeel. Be careful of him, he doesn't go easy on people. Of course i can beat him easily." Lucy rolled her eyes at his smug smile then looked as he pointed to another Career.
"That's Rogue. He's trouble too, but he's Gajeel's rival so maybe they'll cancel each other out."
Natsu was pointing to a pale boy with messy black hair that reached his shoulders and covered his right eye. His red eye's were similar to Gajeel's except the were completely void of emotion. His mouth was set in a straight line as he stared at Gajeel. Lucy felt the tension between them for across the room before she looked across from Rogue to a blonde who was glaring at Natsu.
"Who's that?" Lucy asked tilting her head towards him. Natsu smiled widely.
"That's my rival Sting. The guy next to him is Cobra and next to him. Midnight."
Lucy looked at the boy named Sting first. He was lean but obviously toned. His spiky blonde hair jutted outwards in every direction with smaller strands partially hanging over his forehead. His slanted blue eyes held a mischievous glint. Lucy noticed a scar across his right eyebrow. Her attention switched to Cobra and caught him staring at her. He gave her a wicked grin that sent a chill down her spine. Lucy quickly moved on to the boy named Midnight.
He was leaning forward in his chair with his arms resting on the table. His pale white hands under his chin. He had short spiky black hair in front with longer straight white hair in the back. He had long white strands on the either side of his face one having five maroon beads on it. His red eyes seemed bored as he scanned over the tributes. A small twisted smirk graced his dark purple tainted lips. Midnight was smaller in stature than the other Careers but the way he carried himself as if he were superior to all of them.
Lucy turned back to Natsu just as he came back with another tray of food.
What is he? Masa questioned loudly in Lucy's mind. Lucy merely shrugged her shoulders and bit into a red apple. Her brown eyes drifted back to the Careers where she now saw other mages holding trays filled of food. The Career members took the trays from them and started eating. The mages stood completely still glancing nervously at the teens sitting at the table. One girl was smaller than the rest but she looked to be around Lucy's age. The girl turned her head and locked her eyes onto Lucy's. Her blue hair was a lighter color than Katja's and much longer with the exception of the top that was cut short and two long strands.
Her hazel eyes shone with intelligence and curiosity as she stared back at Lucy. A small smile spread across her lips. Unwillingly Lucy allowed herself to smile back.
I wonder who she is. Lucy thought as the girl broke eye contact with her and focused her vision on the boy named Gajeel.
Don't Lucy. Only two come out of these Games. Masa reminded her. Lucy narrowed her eyes.
I know that.
Do you?
Lucy remained silent and continued eating her food. A warning bell came telling them to get back to training. Lucy stood up and looked down at her partner who was passed out on the table drool coming from his mouth.
Oh, brother. She thought before rolling her eyes. She started to laugh before she felt something brush against her back. She turned around and saw the light blue-haired girl.
"Good luck, Key." She whispered gently before being pulled away by her much larger partner. He pushed her in front of him gruffly.
"Hurry up Shrimp." He grumbled before following closely behind her. Lucy glared at the boy's backside. Then she wondered how the girl knew about the Fairy Key.
"Her name's Levy. We thought she was the Fairy Key before Katja. We were wrong." A tired voice said from below her. Lucy looked down at Natsu.
"Does she have a mark on her too?"
Natsu shook his head. "She set a barrier around herself that would welcome the key. It almost melted the damn thing." Natsu ended it in a laugh. Lucy smiled at his sudden playfulness. She nudged him with her hand and walked away from the table.
"C'mon. Let's go train some more."
Natsu groaned and reluctantly walked along side her.
I guess you two have become quite a team.
Lucy glanced over. She smiled widely.
Yea. I guess we have.
After another day of hard training, Lucy felt an increase in her magic and body strength. Throughout the day Lucy and the blue-haired girl named Levy talked and bonded during training. Levy taught Lucy how to find poisonous plants and dangerous types of magic, while Lucy taught her everything she learned from reading the magic books from her mother's library. It was underground of course to hide it from the Council, but if you knew the house really well like Lucy did you could easily find the staircase leading down to it.
Now Lucy sat in a metal chair next to Natsu nervously biting her lip and tapping the heel of her boot against the ground. Today was the day they would get tested on their strength. The tributes would be tested with their partners against whatever the Gamemakers wanted them to fight against. Throughout the day Lucy would hear screams, cries of pain, and crashes behind the door. occasionally a bright flash shone underneath the door followed by deadly silence. Natsu sat back with his arms crossed over his chest and his head down.
Lucy wondered if he was concentrating on his magic energy like she was until she saw him slump forward and hit the floor asleep. Her mouth hung open as her eye twitched.
What is wrong with this boy?Masa asked critically. Lucy jumped a bit. Masa had stopped talking as much so it shocked her to hear his voice again.
Where have you been?
I'm distancing myself...I can't be with you in the games so you needed to get used to a clear mind set before you start.
Lucy looked straight ahead and was about to ask Masa another question when her and Natsu's name were called. She heard a groan as she shakily made her way to her feet. Natsu jumped up and stretched.
"Alright, finally a fight!" He shouted then grabbed Lucy's arm and dragged her through the doors. The walked into a spacious silver room with dim lights. The area was clear except for a weapons table and a booth above them where the Gamemakers sat talking loudly. Natsu dropped Lucy's arm and walked over to the table. He took the whip and tossed it to Lucy. She fumbled with it then steadied herself. Her ears picked up laughing. Lucy looked up and saw the head Gamemaker Seneca staring down at them with amusement in his bright blue eyes. Lucy tore her eyes away from him in time to see Natsu grab a knife. He turned towards her and threw her a brown pocket.
"You never know if their gonna let us use magic or not." He whispered before turning to face the Gamemakers.
"Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfillia." He shouted.
Seneca nodded then sat down in a plush red sofa. A button was held out to him. He pressed it and the room immediately went black. Lucy gripped the whip handle in her right hand. She heard Natsu shuffling next to her.
"Get ready." She heard before the lights came back on. She looked around at the ice cave they were now in. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Natsu use his magic to create a flame. He grinned widely at the fact they could use magic. Lucy opened the pocket and found two celestial keys in there. One was the key of the bull. The other was the key of the archer. She smiled. The bull was one of the strongest of the celestial beings and the archer would be a good crippling agent. Suddenly a loud roar filled the cave. Lucy froze and looked around. A flash of white passed by her and knocked Natsu to the ground.
"Damn it! It's a Vulcan. A freaking Vulcan! I bet they others got a harder opponent, right, Lucy?"
"Natsu!" She warned through clenched teeth as the Vulcan stopped and began to shake. Lucy watched in horror as the Vulcan split and created a clone. Lucy dropped her whip and grabbed the key of the bull.
"Gate of the bull I open thee! Taurus!" She yelled swiping the key across her body.
Through a puff of smoke a large muscular bull stood in front of her with a giant axe. He stood like a human but looked like a bull with his white coat decorated with black spots and long tail and ears. The spirit turned around and stared at his new master.
"Oooooh! Nice body!" He yelled while shaking his butt back and forth while holding the axe like a little child at Christmas would hold his new toy. Lucy slapped her forehead and sighed heavily. She pointed sharply to the two Vulcans.
"Just get them!" She ordered grabbing her whip off the ground. Taurus nodded and ran off to attack the nearest Vulcan. Before he could a giant flame knocked him to the side. Lucy turned and saw Natsu standing on a ledge fire dancing in both of his hands.
"Man these things multiply quick!" He said before jumping down and connected his fist to the side of the clone's Vulcan's head. Lucy shouted at him telling him not to attack Taurus, but it was too late. Natsu was battling both Taurus and the clone Vulcan. Lucy ran to split them up, but was quickly knocked to her feet. Her head hit the ice hard and her vision went black for a few moments. She blinked rapidly as she looked into the face of the Vulcan. The resembled monkeys but they were much bigger and stronger. Lucy tightened Her grip on the whip and swung her arm up. The Vulcan dodged the attack and picked Lucy up by her hair. Before she could swing again the Vulcan threw her across the room where she landed on the fighting Natsu and Taurus. Lucy rubbed her head as she saw Taurus and the other Vulcans disappear. The room went black again until it slowly became the spacious room again. Natsu mumbled something about 'not enough time' and 'I would've beat those bastards' as Lucy got off of him. She looked up to see the Gamemakers not even looking at them but instead stuffing their faces with a cooked pig.
Lucy narrowed her eyes. They weren't even watching us! She thought as she noticed one of the servants held the remote instead of Seneca. She felt heat coming from Natsu and noticed the flames flowing from his hands to his upper arms. Lucy sensed he was angry too. She smirked as she thought of an idea. She whispered it in Natsu ear. He smiled and nodded. Lucy reached in the pocket and grabbed the key of the archer.
"Gate of the Archer I open thee! Sagittarius!" She said swiping the key across her chest. A man dressed in a horse costume wearing medieval clothing with a large quiver and bow came out saluting.
"Moshi Moshi."
Lucy had read that the archer would be different from what celestial wizards would expect but she was still shocked. Lucy walked close to the spirit as Natsu examined him.
"Aim for the pig's eye." She said pointing at the Game makers. The man-horse nodded as he took an arrow from the quiver on his back and positioned his bow. Before he shot the arrow Natsu covered the tip with his fire. Lucy nodded to Sagittarius and he shot the arrow. The three watched as it sailed past the Gamemakers and hit the pig's eye. The Gamemakers jumped back and someone even screamed. They turned to see the two tributes smirking at them as the spirit disappeared.
"Oi, next time actually watch the tributes." Natsu laughed before walking out dropping his knife on the table. Lucy bowed and said. "Thank you for your consideration." before following her partner. As she left the Gamemakers somehow she knew this would not be good for her and Natsu.
"What on earth were you thinking!" Effie's voice screeched. Lucy flinched as Natsu shoved a piece of chicken in his mouth. Karen sat next to Lucy. She rubbed her eyes.
"I think you did great kid. What did you say to them again?" She asked a bright smile on her face. Lucy smiled and squeezed her legs tighter to her chest.
"Thank you for your consideration." Lucy heard Makarov's drunken laugh and couldn't help but laugh along with him. Effie huffed as she paced the floor.
"Do you know where this puts us? At the bottom! You two maybe a team but what you did was.. was inexcusable! Not only will you get low scores you might not even get sponsors! Also..."
"Aw shut your trap you annoying clone." Makarov slurred taking a sip from his bottle. "The results are on."
The team turned their attention to the large screen where the tributes names where listed in partners. Their score was on the right beside their names. Everyone knew the highest number that could be reached was a twelve, but barely anyone made it even close to that.
1. Rustyrose and Sue- 10
2. Cobra and Mary Hughes-7
3. Azuma and Elfman Strauss- 9
4. Flare and Coco- 5
5. Midnight and Bickslow- 12
6. Zancrow and Dan- 11
7. Meredy and Juvia- 6
8. Ultear and Gray- 10
9. Gajeel and Levy- 11
10. Sting and Eve- 11
11. Rogue and Katja- 10
12. Natsu and Lucy- 12
Lucy sat gaping at the screen. She read her and Natsu's name over and over. There were two twelves and she was in one of them. She heard Effie gasp, but she remained quiet. Karen clapped her hands while Makarov danced around with joy(Dance with him lucydragneel312! You also get an excerpt). Natsu grinned at Lucy. Lucy smiled back as she stared at the screen. She wondered what their individual scoring was since they added the partner's scoring together to get one score. But she knew that she would find out at the interviews that night.
Good job, Lucy.
Lucy froze. That wasn't Masa's voice talking to her. She heard a clap and saw Karen holding out her hand.
"C'mon let's go get you ready for tonight."
Lucy nodded slowly then took the hand reached out to her. As she followed her mentor and partner to where she would spend another few hours of torture she smiled and looked up with her head high.
Thanks mom.
"Do you even know what you have done!" President Precht yelled at Seneca who sat back calmly drinking his tea.
"They deserved the score." He said taking another sip. The President stomped toward him and smacked the cup from his hand sending it crashing to the floor.
"They tried to shoot you."
"Yes, and I believe that took guts, don't you think?" He asked the man sitting across from him. Precht looked to the man as he merely shrugged.
"I think you are an idiot. Now the districts might have hope of a celestial wizard coming back. What if she is the Fairy Key?" Both Seneca and Precht froze. The man reached over and grabbed his tea. After taking a drink, he leaned over and grabbed a white rose from a tree branch.
"If she is the Key, she will most likely live through this and your reign over the Districts will soon fall like the petals of these flowers." He said picking the white petals off one by one until only the stem remained.
Precht ran his hand through his beard as the man got up. Seneca stared at his hands.
"What do you suggest we do, Masa?" The President demanded.
Masa smiled coldly as he began to fade. "Make sure she doesn't survive in these games."
Seneca stood. "And if she does?"
Masa turned his back on them. "Kill her before she reaches her District."
Precht smiled and nodded his head. "Either way the Key will be dead."
"If she is the Key." Seneca mumbled quietly. Masa grinned.
"Oh, and watch out for her partner. He's a stubborn one." He said before disappearing leaving the two men in the garden.
"President, can we trust Masa?"
Precht frowned as he looked to the head Gamemaker. "Just make sure that girl and her partner are dead by the third night or this will be your first and last year as Gamemaker." He hissed then walked towards his castle. Seneca sighed heavily then went on his way.
Lucy stood nervously in a line behind Natsu and the other tributes. She fiddled with her short white gloves the reached her wrist. A magenta flower rested on top with a gold star in the middle. Cinna had given her a beautiful dress that at first she wouldn't wear it. The dress was a halter that flowed freely so it would not show her entire figure. It had a strap that went around Lucy's neck and connected to a large white bow at the top of the dress. It was a beautiful forest green from the top to about the middle of her thigh. A white pulse pattern went around the dress changing the forest green to a mint green. Another white pulse pattern came below the mint green and changed the color to a slightly darker mint green.
At the very top the dress split to wear it looked like a rob. A cream-colored strapless sundress with a jagged end was underneath and reached just below her knees. The green dress flowed lower and was like a wave. A gold and light blue circular and stripe design was on both sides of the green dress and fit together like a puzzle piece. On her feet were magenta colored sandals. The straps tied around her legs and up to the middle of her calf. Her hair was kept back by a forest green scarf. She had Cinna place her bangs and two long strands of blonde hair in front of the scarf before he tied up the back of her hair and placed the scarf over her head.
Lucy felt someone tugging her hand and realized Natsu was signaling her that they were up next. Lucy's brown eyes shifted to Natsu. He was in black dress pants and a white buttoned up shirt. He rolled the sleeves up to his elbows despite Effie's disapproval. He wore a black vest over the white shirt. The vest had the design of scales on it. Some of the tips were even red. As always Natsu wore his white scarf around his neck. His hair was in its familiar style. He looked relaxed until he uncrossed his arms and put on a fake smile. He grabbed Lucy's hand and walked forward.
Lucy followed. Her legs were a bit shakey as she stepped onto the bright lighted stage. At first her hearing was muffled as the crowd cheered. Natsu motioned for her to sit after she shook Caesar's hand. It was silent for a moment before Natsu nudged her with his elbow. She turned to him and Caesar.
"Excuse me?"
The crowd laughed. Caesar smiled gently and looked out to the crowd.
"I think someone's a little nervous."
Lucy smiled sheepishly. "Can you repeat your question?"
Caesar nodded. "I know you volunteered for a little girl in your district, but as I recall she has no relation to you, correct?"
Lucy stiffened not liking where this was going. "Yes, she was the sister of my friend, Cana."
Caesar sat back his hand on his chin. "That name sounds very familiar."
Lucy clenched her fist. "It should she was in the games last year."
"Ah, yes the one that battled Bluenote, right?"
Lucy nodded. "I told her I would protect Li if anything happened to her."
Caesar leaned forward and nodded. "And that you did, Lucy."
The host switched his attention to Natsu after wishing Lucy good luck. Lucy sat watching as Caesar and Natsu went back in forth with questions about the districts and how different they were from the Capital. Natsu had even gotten Caesar to smell him! Soon the interviews were done and the tributes headed back to their rooms. Before they got to the elevator one of the people from the Gamemakers handed each tribute a card. Lucy looked down at the number six printed on her card. Her and Natsu had gotten a tied score.
Lucy looked around her until she spotted Levy. The blue-haired mage met her eyes and held up four fingers. Lucy held up six. She saw Levy's eyes widen before she was dragged off by her partner. To be tied with her partner meant that people were going to go after them first. She wondered what she would do if Natsu was killed or what he would do if she was killed. She knew he hated these games and he only stayed because of the Fairy Key, but if the Fairy Key died did he die as well?
As the two reached the elevator the Careers turned to glare at them. Rogue and Sting focused on Natsu while the others on Lucy. Midnight gave her a smirk then mouthed. "Your first."
Natsu pulled her on the elevator before she could react. As the door closed and they started to pass by floors Natsu grabbed Lucy's shoulders.
"You can't let these games change you. You are the Fairy Key." He took her gloved right hand and removed it. "This mark is a symbol of power, freedom, and strength. I am your partner, Lucy. I will not let you die. So don't think about what could happen to you or me, because as the Fairy Key and as my friend you cannot afford to think like that, okay?"
Lucy nodded. She gave a small smile at her partner. "Okay, Natsu." The dragon slayer nodded then left as the doors opened to their floor. Lucy followed him out then headed to her room for a sleepless night. Tomorrow was the Dragon Games. Who could sleep knowing that they might die?
