Episode 126 : "The Fate of Delta Five – Part V"
"What?" Jeff exclaimed, looking over at his wife. She turned her head slowly to look at him, as if she only half heard him, the sound of an explosion in her mind filling her ears, causing them to ring uncontrollably.
"A vision," she said. "I saw a robeast exploding…as it crashed into the Delta Five base…" Jeff turned to Sparks.
"Sparks," he commanded, "radio engineering and tell them to push the engines past their limits! I want this ship to arrive yesterday!"
"Aye, sir," Sparks replied, working the communications terminal.
"You don't think…." Christiane began to say.
"Not if I can help it, Chris," he replied. "We'll stop that thing one way or another."
"Form Blazing Sword!" Jenny shouted. Voltron quickly put the spinning laser blades together over his head and pulled downward, forming the sword. Voltron took off running, then took off into the air towards the base.
"I don't think we're gonna make it," Rocky said.
"We have to try!" Wolo shouted.
"Can you go any faster?" Dixie asked.
"That's what she said," Eddie snarked.
"Bro, she did say that," Chet said. "But bro, there's no sense in letting this workout go to waste."
"Dude, you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?" Eddie asked.
"Dude," Chet replied.
"Will you two shut up and do something?" Dixie snapped. They plugged in their voltcoms, and the Aqua Jets slid out of the sides of Voltron's lower legs. The blast propelled Voltron forward at twice his normal speed.
"For every action," Eddie said.
"There's an equal and opposite reaction!" Chet finished. "Dude you remember the time we made that lawn chair rocket?"
"Guys!" Mai shouted. "Work now, reminisce later!" Voltron brandished the sword.
"We gotta make this one count, team," Jenny said.
"But Jenny," Ken said, "We might not have enough inertia to knock it off course. The debris will still impact the base." Suddenly, they saw heavy amounts of laser fire hit the Halas Robeast.
"All forward arrays, open fire!" Jeff commanded. The Defender launched every missile it could and fired every laser, attempting to knock them out of control command ship robeast off course.
"They have no attitude control," Ken said. "We need to make out mark here to get it to clear the base."
"Then let's stop talking about it and just do it!" Jenny said.
"Go for broke!" Cliff shouted.
"Full power!" Krik shouted. Voltron crashed, shoulder first, into the robeast, knocking it off course. Voltron spun around, then came down with the sword, slicing through the middle. The halves dropped to the ground near the base and exploded in a fiery mess. Voltron landed nearby, still brandishing the sword.
"Great job, team!" Jeff shouted over the com.
"Commander!" Sparks shouted. "Something big is approaching fast!"
"Well," General Binak said, "the Halassian ship has been destroyed."
"Expected," Merla replied, gesturing as if it didn't matter. "It'll keep the Halas out of our hair while we continue our mining operations. If we could only get rid of…." She stopped mid-sentence and leaned forward, holding her head.
"Your majesty?" Binak asked. "Are you alright?" She remained silent for a moment before looking up at the screen.
"No…" she said under her breath. Binak turned to look at the viewscreen to see a robot monster fly past them at break-neck speed, heading strait for Voltron. "It….can't be…"
"I don't understand," Binak asked. "Who is it? Reinforcements from Carnus? Who?" A single unseen tear of remorse tugged at the corner of her eye as she whispered.
"Skath."
"Huh?" Jenny muttered upon hearing the commotion over the com. Voltron turned in time to get blasted head on, getting knocked backwards off his feet, skidding backwards hundreds of yards before coming to a stop. On impact, the Blazing sword was knocked out of his hands, flying through the air end over end and stabbing into the ground further away.
"What the hell was that?" Jeff asked.
"This one's official, Commander!" Sparks said. "It's a Drule robeast! And what's worse, I'm detecting a single Drule life form inside! It appears to be physically and electronically connected to the robeast!"
"We need to stop it before it destroys the base!" Jeff shouted. "Open fire!" The Defender focused fire on the robeast, and it turned to face the ship, mostly unscathed by the laser fire.
"Get up!" Jenny ordered. The team strained as Voltron got to his feet and made a run for the sword. The robeast turned and ran at Voltron, tackling him into the side of a cliff. It grabbed Voltron by the neck and held it there as it struck him repeatedly.
"It's got us pinned!" Krik shouted.
"We gotta break loose," Jenny said. "Modoch, Cinda, give it all you've got!" The two strained at the controls, Volton's hands coming down hard on the robeast's shoulders, breaking his grip. Voltron kicked the robeast, causing it to stagger backwards.
"We're free," Rocky said.
"Don't stop now, team!" Jenny shouted. Voltron ran at the robeast. "Follow up!" Voltron leaped into the air and came down with a flying kick, sending the robeast flying onto its back.
"The robeast is powerful," Merla said, "but Voltron has the upper hand." She gave Binak a cold stare. "Get in there and open fire!"
"But, Your Majesty, if we fly in there…" he started to say.
"I know that you bumbling idiot!" she scolded. "It's a chance we have to take!"
"Yes, Your Majesty," Binak said with a bow, turning to direct the crew to begin an assault. The ship indeed opened fire on Voltron.
"If the Drules want a fire fight," Jeff said, gritting his teeth, "they're gonna get one! Bring us about and target the Command Ship!" The Defender came about fast and began firing on Merla's command ship.
"Go for it!" Jenny shouted. Voltron once again ran for the sword. The robeast rolled over and fired a blast, knocking Voltron away from the sword again.
"He's not going to let us get close to it," Krik said.
"How much power do we have left?" Jenny asked.
"Our solar cells were badly damaged in the last fight," Ken said. "We have maybe five minutes of stored nuclear energy left."
"That sounds familiar," Cliff scoffed.
"Then we better work quickly," Jenny said. Voltron and the robeast got to their feet. Voltron took off into the air. "Electro-thermoblast!" Voltron fired the blast from his chest, knocking the robeast backwards. "Let's try for it again!" Voltron landed and ran for the sword again. The robeast recovered quickly and grabbed Voltron, pulling him to the right and tumbling to the ground. The robeast began physically punching Voltron. The team cried out in pain as electrical surges flowed through the hull.
"His blows are short circuiting the systems!" Ken shouted.
"Then let's use our head," Jenny said, a grin forming on her pain stricken face as she pushed the lever hard forward. Voltron grabbed the robeast and pulled it towards him, then swung forward, headbutting it. "Eye Beam!" Voltron fired, blasting the robeast off him. Voltron rolled over and ran, diving and rolling back to his feet, Blazing Sword in hand.
"Aaaaaah!" Skath screamed as energy flowed through him. The blades slid out from the robeast's arms, and it and Voltron ran at one another. It swung, meeting Voltron's sword, but the Blazing sword sliced through both blades, passing the robeast by, then turning quickly.
"Go Voltron!" they shouted as Voltron turned and qickly sliced horizonally through the robeast. It fell in half, then exploded.
"No!" Merla gasped.
The members of the Drule High Council looked at one another in confusion. The meeting had been called without much advanced notice, the seats of the Second, Fourth, and Seventh kingdoms notably absent, with Korronith's seat taken up by the Witch Haggar. Seemingly lost in thought, as if her attention were divided, she sat quietly, yet eerily.
"Does anyone know what this is about?" King Dharlok of the Tenth kingdom asked.
"I see no sign of Skath or Merla," King Bhorn remarked. "I'm not liking this one bit."
"What you like or don't like does not concern me," Kanji said as he walked into the room. The remaining council members sat down. Kanji turned and stared directly at Bhorn, who was trying to avoid eye contact.
"Lord Kanji," Queen Larinska asked, "you called us here on short notice. While we are honored by your presence, we wish to know the reason for the urgency."
"My reason is simple," he replied, still fixated on Bhorn. "I have sat back and watched the Voltron Force stretch themselves thin across the galaxy. I have also watched the Galaxy Alliance defeat us at every juncture."
"Lord Kanji," Larinska spoke again, "many of the kingdoms have chosen to stay out of Korronith's war with the Galaxy Alliance."
"And it is that unwilling spirit that condemns the entire empire to death!" kanji shouted, slamming his hand on the table, Bhorn's chalice spilling on the table in front of him. The blood red liquid rolled down the table and trickled over the side. "I told you one way or another, the Kingdoms of the Supremacy would unify. And that is exactly what I will do."
"And if we refuse?" Lord Vyrketh of the Eighth Kingdom asked. Kanji walked up to him and pulled his sword. He stabbed it through the table in front of him, the blade exiting the table between his legs, inches from his manhood.
"You have no choice," Kanji replied, gritting his teeth. "Blood has already been spilled in this war." He pulled the sword out and resheathed it. "Our bretheren across the galaxies….throughout the universe….have shed their blood and given their lives for us! Now it is time we joined together in unity to take what is rightfully ours and crush our enemies for the glory of the Drule Empire!" Haggar stood up. She stepped back and he raised his hands. "Every Drule in every corner of the universe will hear my call….and they shall call me…..MASTER!" He dropped his arms, and an uncontrollable wave blasted over them, their minds being cleared of all thought….except that of unquestioned fealty to Lord Kanji.
"Your Majesty!" Binak shouted. "Voltron has destroyed the robeast! The Alliance Command ship is beginning to buckle our shields! We have to retreat!" After a moment of silence, a wave of something washed over them all, as if time had frozen for a moment. She then turned to Binak, who had also fallen into a catatonic trance.
"Bring us about," she said softly. "Set a course for Carnus."
"Carnus?" Binak asked.
"Do I need to repeat all of my orders?" she snapped.
"No, Your Majesty," he replied, directing the officers to bring the ship around and set course to leave the system.
"The command ship," Jenny said, "where is it going?"
"Keep on firing!" Jeff shouted. "They're running!" In the blink of an eye, the ship left the planet and jumped to hypermach speeds, vanishing from sight.
"Commander," Sparks said, "I'm receiving a signal from the base. They are sending up their thanks, and asking for us to land to assist with repairs and supplies." Jeff looked at Christiane and smiled. She nodded.
"Take us down," Jeff said. "Have the Voltron Force separate and dock."
Jeff walked up to the Lieutenant and shook his hand.
"You did a fine job holding down this place while we were gone," Jeff said.
"We wouldn't have made it if the Voltron Force hadn't arrived when they did," the Lieutenant replied.
"They're a fine team," Jeff said. "It looks like, according to our scans, that the Drules high tailed it out of Yolon for some reason. And with the Halas dealt with, it may be a while before we see them again."
"That's good," he replied. "We have a lot to repair and catch up on in the meantime."
"While the Voltron Force checks out the remaining systems close to Delta," Jeff said, "the Defender will remain here and assist with getting the base operational again."
"That sounds great," he replied. Outside, Jenny stood near the door casually listening in. Mai walked up to her, seeing her listening intently.
"We really did a great job out there," she said. Jenny turned her head and smiled.
"Yeah," she replied. "It was a tough battle, but we pulled through."
"Think that might call for a celebration?" Mai asked innocently. Jenny laughed.
"It looks like the Commander might be sending us back into the fray soon enough," she said. "But for now, how about a drink on me? We could all use a little pat on the back, right?" She put her arm around Mai and walked with her down the hall, Mai leaning her head on Jenny's shoulder. "We can toast to victory and freedom in Yolon, thanks to Voltron…..Defender of the Universe."
