Chapter 71
Moving her hips to the beat of the music coming from her headphones, Callie danced around her kitchen while getting the ingredients out of the fridge to make breakfast for her sleeping wife. It had been a month since Arizona had received the call from the Carter Maddison Foundation. After word got out about the blonde turning down the award, several news media outlets contacted her wanting interviews because she was the first person to ever turn down the prestigious award. Declining all interviews that came her way except one, Arizona fielded several career and personal questions from the editor. When her article finally came out in the Pediatrics Medical Journal a week ago Callie had purchased every copy she found available in Seattle, claiming she had to buy enough copies for every one of their friends and family. She also insisted on framing one of the magazines that now proudly hung in the living room next to their framed weenie roasted Teddy had made for them on their wedding day. And the extras, yes a ton of extra magazines were stored in bottom of their closet for safe keeping. Callie couldn't help it though, she couldn't have been more proud of her wife for making it into that magazine. Not because Arizona choose to stay and start a family with her, but because her wife's name was now familiar all across the globe as one of the best pediatricians in the world. Who knew turning down an award would get you so much notoriety.
Beating the eggs for French toast, Callie noticed Charlie walking into the kitchen. "Hey bud, are you hungry?" She asked, pulling an earbud out of her ear so she could hear if her wife was also up for the day as she watched the dog walk over to his water dish. Not hearing footsteps upstairs, she checked the bacon that was cooking on the stove. Turning around, she about stepped on the dog the was now at her feet. "You hungry boy?" She said, turning the pan off and placing the cooked bacon on a plate. "Come on, I'll feed ya." She said, walking to the pantry and getting a scoop of dog food for him. "Eat and then when I get finished, we'll take your mama some breakfast." She said as Charlie just stood there looking up at her.
Sitting down by the food dishes, she patted her lap for him to come closer. "What's wrong boy? You're usually fighting for your food first thing in the mornings." She said, petting the dog that was in her lap. Knowing animals had a sixth sense about things, she wondered what had him upset. "You know what we're doing today don't ya?" She asked him as he laid his head down in her lap. "Or... you saw Arizona's luggage out. Which is it.. huh?" She asked him, feeling a little dumb at the moment talking to the dog like he was going to respond. Hearing more steps, she turned just as River walked up to them. "Hey you." She petted his head after he licked her face. "You're not sad are you?" She laughed. Reaching down, she shook their dog food bowl letting the husky know his breakfast was out. And he also just stayed by her side, ignoring the food. "Do you guys just want some cuddles this morning?" She asked them. "Listen guys, mama isn't going any where yet. Stop moping around or you're going to make me sad too." She told them as River laid his head in her lap also. "Today's not suppose to be a sad day so buck up, because today your mama and I are going to go try to make you a new brother or a sister. That's exciting huh?" She asked them as the both let out a sigh. "Great pep talk, really calmed my nerves." She rolled her eyes, and stood up to finish breakfast.
Making sure she had everything on the tray, Callie carried breakfast upstairs and into their bedroom with the dogs on her heels. Sitting the tray down on Arizona's nightstand, she lifted the sheet from the bottom of the bed that was covering the blondes body and slipped under, settling herself right between her wife's legs. Lifting the blondes shirt up, she smiled when she saw her flat stomach. She could already see her wife with a little pudgy belly. Placing a few light kisses just below her wife's belly button Callie stilled, feeling her wife flinch.
Stirring, Arizona felt a presence between her legs. Looking down she saw her wife's form under the sheets. Stilling her body again, Arizona pretended she was still sleeping as she felt her wife placing butterfly kisses on her stomach. "Listen up in there." She heard the brunette whisper, giving her belly a poke. "You're going to have a bunch of visitors in a little while okay?" Hearing her wife talk to her stomach, Arizona fought off the giggles.
"Now I want you to be warm and welcoming.. Maybe even allowing one or two to set up home.. Okay? I promise you won't regret it." Callie said, talking to her wife's stomach.
Smelling a hint of bacon in the air, Arizona's stomach growled. Looking around for the source of the aroma. Her eyes landed on her nightstand at the tray of food her wife placed there. Grabbing a piece as still as she could while her wife continued to kiss and talk to her stomach, content on just letting Callie do her thing.
"Hey, don't you growl at me." Callie said, poking softly at her wife's stomach. "I'm just giving you a pep talk so relax and I'll get you fed. Deal?" She shook her head. "What the hell am I doing?" she whispered to herself. "I'm too badass for this." she groaned as she began to crawl up her wife's body. "Oh.." She stopped her movements and looked back down at her wife's belly. "But I meant it." She said, rubbing her wife's stomach. "Be warm, friendly and think positive." she said, placing a kiss on her wife's flat belly again. "I'll be back tomorrow same place and time.. just don't tell anyone." She said, crawling up her wife's body. Making it to the top of the bed, Callie came out from under the sheet only to meet her wife's blue eyes and smiling face. "Hi." She grinned.
"Hi." Arizona laughed at her wife. That was one of the sweeties things she had ever heard before and she couldn't wait until they were pregnant so Callie would talk to their baby all the time. "What were you doing?" She asked, kissing red lips that were hovering above her.
"Umm.. my ah.. my lotion I put on my hands last night must have caused my wedding ring to slipped off.. yeah.. so I was under the cover looking for it." She stammered, coming up with an excuse. "Found it." She smiled and holding up her left hand. She didn't want her wife knowing she was giving her eggs a pep talk, even thought she knew Arizona would think it was cute.
"Mmhmm…" Arizona squinted her eyes at the brunette. "How in the world did it get between my legs?" she questioned.
"I.. I don't know.. you know me, even in my sleep my hands roam to your body." Callie shrugged, flopping down beside her wife. "You excited for today?" She rolled over, facing her wife.
"I am." She grinned, turning her head to look her brunette wife. "Very excited." She said, as Callie placed her hand on her stomach.
"Me too." Callie whispered just as she heard her wife's stomach growl again. "I fixed us breakfast." She laughed as Arizona placed her hand on top of hers that was caressing the blondes soft stomach.
"I saw that, thank you." She leaned in and kissed her wife's cheek. "Just think.. in a few weeks we could be pregnant."
"I know." Callie smiled. She couldn't wait for that day. "Now, come on.. You need to eat so we can get ready and head to Addison's office."
Are you a hundred percent sure on the donor?" The blonde asked. "I know you said you only wanted a part Latino donor, you sure you don't want..."
Stopping her wife, "Babe, I'm sure I don't. I know a Latino would dominate over your traits and A half one probably will but if there's a bigger chance yours could. I want our baby to have your smile." She said, caressing her wife's face. "So this way theres a better chance of the baby having your eyes and dimples and maybe my hair and skin color.. anything else is just a plus."
"Okay.." Arizona nodded. "But I'm hoping he or she will look more like you."
"Hopefully it will have both our traits." Now eat, because I want to impregnate you." she wiggled her eyebrows.
"You just can't wait can ya?" Arizona laughed and sat up in the bed, reaching for the tray of food and passing Callie's off to her. During the few months of taking the fertility shots, the couple had discussed on several occasions what kind of donor they wanted to use and just last week they finally picked between the business man and the architect they both agreed in the Architect because both women thought he had some of the others features. So there choice was set, sperm donor 8675309 would be their baby daddy.
"No." Callie chuckled. "I like the thought of knocking you up." She grinned, talking a bite of her French toast.
"I like it too." Arizona laughed as she leaned over and placed a kiss on her wife's jaw. "I'm not going to let myself get to excited though, because it rarely works on the first try. But we're starting so that's exciting all in itself." She said, as she saw Charlie pacing back and forth in the bedroom.
"Yeah." Callie said, taking a bite of her bacon. She wasn't going to tell her wife how extremely anxious and excited she was. She didn't want the blonde to feel like she let her down if they didn't get pregnant on the first try even thought Callie would be devastated if it didn't happen. She didn't want the blonde to feel like she let her down if it didn't take, but she brunette had an inkling. She felt like this was it, like it was going to turn out just the way they had hoped. Now only time will tell.
"What is up with him today?" Arizona asked, as she ate the last piece of her toast.
"Oh.." Callie said, talking a drink of her orange juice. "Someone..." She eyed her wife. "..must have had the suitcase out yesterday and I guess he noticed it. He was moping around in the kitchen this morning while I was cooking. He wouldn't even eat his breakfast and neither did River." She shook her head. "I don't know how they do it, but they can sense when one or both of us are leaving for more than a day."
"I don't think he saw my luggage. I just took it out for a few minutes to take out a few things I had previously left in it before I packed for San Francisco. They were outside with you when I did that last night." Arizona said, watching him come up to the bed to rest his head beside her. "Do you think they can sense we're doing the insemination today?" She asked her wife while she petted her dog.
Shrugging, "I don't know... probably. I mean, they know before we leave sometimes that we'll be gone for a while. So it's a big possibility."
"You think they'll act weird or anything once we get pregnant?" Arizona asked as Callie got up from the bed and pulled clothes from their dresser.
"Ugh.. I don't know. I know sometimes they can tell when change is coming and sometimes dogs don't take to kindly to that. But sometimes they do and sometimes when a baby arrives they will protect them with their lives. I guess time will tell. We'll just have to keep show them some attention. I think they'll do fine." Callie said as she patted her chest for River to jump up. "Yeah.. you'll be a good boy even when mama gets knocked up my mommy won't you boy... yes you will." She laughed when he barked.
"Don't don't get them all wound up, Calliope." She said, joining her wife at the dresser to get her some underwear to put on after her shower. "You'll be the one trying to drag them to their pin if you do." She said. Smacking her wife's butt before walking off to take a quick shower before they left for the hospital.
"Hey, Arizona?" Callie yelled out to the blonde in the bathroom.
"Yeah babe?" She asked, poking her head out of the door with a toothbrush in her mouth.
"I love you."
"To the moon and back." Arizona winked, disappearing back into the bathroom. She loved how Callie always seemed to melt her heart.
Putting the jeep in park, Callie let out a small breath. The closer they got to the hospital the more her heart began to race. This was a big day in their life. And if the insemination took, it would be a day they'd never forget.
After their visit with Addison, the couple went home and talked about the option they wanted to take to get pregnant. Callie was keen on the home insemination because it was more personal and private, but Arizona was too grossed out with the thought of some 'mans juices' as she called it, possibly getting on their bed. So with a lot of talking and thinking, Callie agreed on the insemination only after Arizona promised if it didn't work after a few tries she would think about doing it at home in their bed.
Noticing her wife's fidgetiness, Arizona felt slightly relieved that she wasn't the only one with nerves right now. Grabbing her wife's hand to stop her from gripping the wheel so tight, "You're nervous too huh?" Arizona smiled, looking at their joined hands before glancing up at her wife.
"Yeah." Callie sighed, hoping she was hiding it well and apparently she was a terrible actress. "I didn't want you to know." She looked, at her wife and have her a half smile. "It's not like I'm having second thoughts or anything. It's just.. today's a big deal."
"Relax, babe." Arizona said, kissing her wife's hand. "I'm nervous too, because it's a..huge shift for us. One that I'm ready to take."
"Me too." Callie relaxed a bit, glad that she wasn't the only one a little uneasy.
"Is it... weird that I kinda wish my mom was here?" She asked, playing with her wife's hand in her lap. "I mean, I know no woman wants their mother present when they get pregnant but this is different. She never expected me to have kids until recently.. let alone carry one. She would be so excited."
"I know what you mean." Callie laughed. "And no it's not weird. If you want you can call her to meet us here. I understand."
"No.. no, I don't want ruin our moment."
"It's not like we'll be in the throes of passion." Callie laughed. "Addison will be helping."
"I know that, but afterwards I want it to just be us. I want that moment to ourselves." Arizona said, kissing her wife's tan hand.
"Yeah, me too." Callie smiled as she unbuckled her belt. "You ready?"
"As I'll ever be." She said, opening the passenger side door.
"Wait." Callie stopped her before jumping out of the jeep and going over to her wife's side. Opening the door for the blonde, she offered her hand. "Milady." She smiled when the blonde accepted her hand and exited the jeep.
"You're too cute." She said, pinching her wife's cheek before walking towards the hospital.
"I'm not cute." Callie pouted. "I'm hot." She said, taking her wife's hand in hers and lacing them together as they walked into the building.
"So hot baby." Arizona purred. "But cute and so pretty." She laughed, pulling her wife to the elevators.
"Well if it isn't Frick and Frack." They heard a voice from behind them. Turning around, they saw the body the strong voice belonged too.
"Miranda." Arizona smiled.
"Hey, Bailey." Callie smiled at the woman and she walked towards them. "What's up?"
"Oh, Ya know. Saving lives one surgery at a time." Miranda laughed at her little joke. "We're yall trying to sneak past me? Trying to go unnoticed? Because you may have forgot Torres, I'm the Nazi, my eyes are everywhere.. all the time."
"I've not forgotten Miranda" Callie laughed. "We were just talking and I wasn't paying attention to anything else."
"Mmhmm.." She eyed her friend. "What are you all doing here on a week day? I bet that bunch of yahoos you have over there at your practice are running wild while you two are out gallivanting around."
"No, actually.. They're more in line when we're gone than when we're there. Teddy's a mean ass when she wants to be." Arizona laughed.
"Was you needing something inparticular Bailey? We have an appointment." Callie told her after checking her watch.
"For what?" Bailey eyed her old friend.
"Uhh.."
"Calliope.. ahh.. She has.." Arizona said, looking around. Stepping closer the the shorter woman so no one could hear her. "This past weekend, we went for a walk on the beach and well.. one thing led to another and she got sand.." She bit her tongue, trying not to laugh. "..in her... cookie."
"Huh?"
"She got sand in her... you know." Arizona whispered again, feeling Callie's grip tighten in her hand. "I think she has some kind of infection now."
"Arizona." Callie tugged on her arm. Of all excuses her wife could have used she chose to embarrass her like that.
"It's the middle of winter.. how is that even possible?" Bailey asked, looking over to a red faces Callie. "It's like twenty degrees."
"Oh.. it's possible, believe me. I mean have you seen her? She's hot. After I got finished with her I thought I was in the dead of summer standing on the beach in a bikini."
Her eyes widening at the thought, "Stop.. stop talking." Miranda said, palming the blondes face and pushing her away. "I'm done here." She said, turning to walk away.
"Aw.. Come on Bailey, you can't tell me you and Ben never..." The blonde said, raising her eyebrow the the woman.
"Ya nasty, Robbins." Bailey through over her back as she mumbled a few other words before shoving some files in an interns hand.
"Arizona." Callie quickly pulled her to the waiting elevator. "I can't believe you told Bailey I had sand in my.. Vagina." She gritted through her teeth.
"You have to admit, it was pretty funny." Arizona laughed, resting her head on her wife's shoulder.
"Her face was kinda priceless. It was like she wanted to say something but just couldn't form the words." The brunette laughed. "You should be proud."
"For what?"
"Not many people can get one over on Bailey. I mean.. She stopped us for a reason and you just made her forget all about it." Callie chuckles, snaking her arm around the back of her wife. "Love you." She said kissing her on top of the head.
"Love you too." The blonde replied, slipping her right hand in her wife's pocket just as the elevated stopped at their destination.
"Let's do this." Callie whispered as she led them out of the car and to Addison's office.
"Well, Arizona." Addison said, sitting in the stool on front of the blonde. "You are one fertile sea turtle." Addison said, placing her hand on the blondes leg. She had just got the blondes tests back saying that today was a perfect day for the insemination.
"Sea turtle?" Arizona raised up and questioned.
"I like sea turtles so yes I.." She said looking up when Callie was giving her a weird look. "You know what.. Whatever." She waived her hand to dismiss the topic. "You ready?" She grinned up at her friends.
Reaching for her wife's hand. "Yeah." Arizona laughed. laying her head back on the bed. "And FYI, I like sea turtles too."
"Okay, feet up." The red head said, pulling the stirrups out for her patient. Laying a cover over Arizona's waist to cover up her modesty she then gloved up. "Okay, I just need you to relax." She said, picking up her instrument.
Watching her friend prepare her wife for the insemination process, Callie turned to focus her full attention on her wife. Not saying a word, she just looked down at her bride and caressed her hair. "I.. I don't know what to do.. or say right now." Callie whispered after a few minutes, causing the blonde to open her eyes to look up at her hovering wife. "I feel like it should do something or say something so to make it a little more intimate than this." She said, leaning down to kiss her wife's cheek.
"Ouch.." The blonde said, feeling Addison between her legs.
"Sorry."
"Addie, that's not what I want to hear when you're between my wife's legs." Callie said, glaring down the table.
"Relax, Cal. I've done this a few times." Addison winked, nodding at the nurse to bring her the Syringe of sperm. "You can step out Martha." Addison told the nurse. She wanted her friends to have some privacy. "You picked a mighty fine donor." Addison said as Martha left the room. "He's cute and he's got the slightest hint of dimples. This baby has no choice but have them now." She smiled at the two.
"Addison.." Arizona glared.
"Sorry, I couldn't help it.. I had to look at this hunk." She shrugged, picking up the tube. "You ready?"
Looking up at her wife, Arizona smiled and pulled the brunette down for a kiss. "Yeah." She nodded after breaking the kiss.
"Cal, you want to do it?" The red head asked.
"I.." Callie said, looking down at her wife. She wanted to squirt it inside her wife, but she also wanted to stay up top with her wife and have a little make out session while she got inseminated. "I.. uhh.."
Seeing her wife mentally fight with what to do, Arizona answered for her. "Yes, she does." She said, bringing her wife's hand to her lips.
"You sure?" Callie looked down at the blonde.
"Positive. I want you to get me pregnant. No one else." She smiled.
"Okay." She nodded as she went and took Addison's place between her wife's legs.
"Don't get all Doey eyed either, Calliope. You have a job to do, so eyes on the prize." The blonde teased.
"I can't help it." She grinned, bitting her bottom lip.
"Okay Cal.. focus." Addison smacked her friend. "You just shoot it in, just like a shot." She said, holding it in place for her friend to take over. "You got it?"
"Yeah." She took a calming breath "Ready baby?" She asked her wife getting a nod in response. Pushing the syringe, Callie injected the sperm into her wife with Addison's guidance. After it was empty she leaned in and kissed her wife's leg before standing up and passing everything back off to the red haired doctor so she can finish up.
Walking back up to the head of the bed, Callie bent down. "Hey." She whispered, her wife peeking an eye open at the sound.
"Hi." Arizona smiled.
"I love you.."
"I love you too, Calliope." She said, cupping her wife's face. "Kiss me." She whispered, pulling her wife down for a slow and languid kiss.
Noticing the couples intimate moment was getting a little heated, Addison quickly finished up and quietly left the room so they could have a little privacy.
"Lay with me, Arizona said, hearing Addison leave the room. "Please.." She asked, scooting over in the bed.
Spreading the cover that laid on her wife's lower body, Callie climbed in the bed, and cuddled up next to her wife.
You feel different?" Callie asked after they had a ten minute make out session, only pulling back before she lost control.
"No.. Should I?"
"I guess not." Callie said, lightly caressing her wife's stomach. "These next few weeks are going to feel like torture."
"Yeah, they are. But the two weeks will go by fast, we'll be busy for at least a week and a half.. You at the clinic and I in San Fransisco." Arizona told her, rubbing her wife's back.
"For you maybe, but for me.. It will seem worse, because you'll be gone." The brunette pouted.
"I know." Arizona said, kissing her wife's head That rested on her chest. "It won be all rainbows and bunnies for me either ya know.."
"I know.. I'm just going to miss you and our little one." Callie
"Callie." She laughed. "There is no little one."
"Not yet at least, but there could be soon." The brunette said as Addison peeked her head back in the door.
"Hey guys, you're free to go. Arizona I want you to take it easy for the next two or three days. And in about five or six weeks I want you to come in and we'll do a test." She told them, picking the blondes chart off the counter. "Good luck guys and Callie." She glared at her friend. "No sex for a few days."
"Yes ma'am." Callie grumbled, getting up off the table and retrieving her wife's clothes as the red head left the room again.
After redressing, Arizona reached for her wife's hand as they walked out of the exam room. "Cal."
"Yeah, babe?"
"I fell like... I dunno." She shrugged. "What if it falls out?" She whispered. "That's.. eww.." She shivered.
"Relax honey, it won't." Callie laughed, pulling her wife close and snaking her arms around the blondes waist. "Let's go home."
"Can we go back to bed?" The blonde asked as they waited in the elevator.
"How about I stop at the deli on the way home and get us some food, then we'll crawl in bed and watch TV all day and maybe if you're good, I'll get you some of your favorite ice cream."
"You're the best." Arizona said, kissing her wife under the ear before entering the elevator car to head home.
