Buckle up please. We're about to go for an interesting yet beautiful ride.
Chapter 77
It had been three weeks since they had found out Arizona was pregnant and in those twenty one days, Callie had waited on her wife hand and foot while they were at home and any chance she got at the office. They still had kept the news of their pregnancy a secret to everyone except Teddy, whom was beyond excited to be an aunt. Today the blonde was now seven weeks along and they had plans at lunch to Skype Callie's grandma to let her in on their little secret a few weeks before they told their families.
"Hey Dr. Robbins, have you seen Conners file?" Teddy asked her friend as she made it into the nurses station.
"Yeah." Arizona said, handing the file to her nurse. "What about the Parker kid?" She cleared her throat, turning her head to look in the small mirror that hung behind Teddy's desk.
"In your office with a few others I need your signature on before lunch if you can." Teddy said, pulling more files from the cabinet. "Are you okay?" She asked, seeing her friend was a little red around the eyes.
"I'll get to them shortly." She answered. "I uh I've been in the bathroom again." She said, rubbing her stomach, hoping Teddy would think she was just having morning sickness again. But truthfully she was in the bathroom crying. "Any plans this weekend?" She asked, plopping down on Teddy's desk. She was trying to keep her mind off other things right now.
"Hmm.. let's see.. if Henry doesn't straighten his ass up, I'm packing my shit and staying with you and Cal for the weekend."
"What's going on?" The blonde doctor asked as she grabbed a chip from her friends bag. "Oh.. you're more than welcome to come, by the way."
"He's a man!" The dark blonde huffed.
"Ha, why do you think I married a gorgeous Latin woman. She cooks and cleans, hell if I'd let her she'd bathe me every night." Arizona chuckled. The brunette wanted to do everything for her wife to make the pregnancy easy on the blonde but Arizona had to keep insisting she was pregnant not injured.
"Seriously though.. How damn hard is it to throw your garbage away instead of laying it on the counter beside the trash can? I mean really?" Teddy ranted, taking Arizona by surprise. The dark blonde never really had a bad thing to say about her fiancé but today on the other hand, she had tons.
"Wow.. uhh not hard at all." She shrugged.
"I know." She slammed the file cabinet shut.
"What's really going on Teds?" Arizona grabbed her friends arm to get the woman to look at her. "The trash is just an excuse to be mad, tell me what's really bothering you."
Sitting down in her chair, Teddy sighed, as she rested her head in her hands. "That obvious?"
"Yep!"
"The Mariners are talking about trading Henry to Atlanta."
"Oh no.." Arizona said, putting a comforting hand in her best friend. "What's he going to do? Is he going to go?"
"He won't have a choice, Arizona." Teddy knew her friend didn't know the difference between a baseball or a basketball much less anything else about the game. "He can't just quit. He's in the middle of his contract."
"When will they know for sure?"
"Henry said within the month."
"What are you all going to do?" Arizona asked.
"He expects me to go with him." Teddy said, looking up at her best friend. "I don't want to leave Zo. Seattle is my home. My friends and my family are here. My soon to be niece or nephew will live here." She whispered, not wanting anyone to hear. "I don't.." She sighed, shaking her head.
"What Teddy? You don't what?"
"I don't know if I love him enough to drop everything I have and move across the country for him. I just don't know if I can leave everyone and everything I have.. for him."
"I'll be the first one to tell you, Teddy. I don't want you going anywhere. But.. being in a relationship is about sacrifice Teds. If you didn't love him enough, you wouldn't be engaged to him right now."
"I know.." Teddy sighed. "It's just I don't want to leave Zo. This is my home."
"It's not set in stone.. right?" Arizona asked.
"No. Stuff like this happens all the time, but this is the first time Henry's name has been brought up."
"Okay, so.. let's not worry until we have something to worry about. Okay?" She didn't know If she was trying to convince Teddy of this or herself.
"Yeah, you're right." Teddy agreed. "It's only rumored right now." Wanting to change the subject. "So, tell me about you? You still been feeling bad?"
"Yeah, I'm still not been feeling the best. I've been cramping and my back hurts lately, but other than that I'm okay. Callie wants me to go in for a checkup, but we go for our eight week ultrasound next week so, I don't see the point unless the pain gets worse."
"Any more spotting?"
"Yeah, but it's nothing out of the ordinary Addie said. I think Callie was a little upset with me this morning because I wouldn't go get checked out but I just don't see the use. There are women who have periods every month when they're pregnant." She shrugged.
"They do." Teddy agreed. "But I know you, what else is it keeping you from going?"
"I don't know." Arizona shrugged. "I'm scared Teddy." Her voice was on the verge of breaking. Arizona had been feeling worse than she had let on to Callie or Teddy.
"What are you scared of Zo?" Teddy asked placing a comforting hand on her friend.
"I just feel like something's wrong."
"Why don't you get checked out then, sweetie? I'm sure it's nothing. Have you told Callie? What's she say?"
"I've not told her how bad it's gotten. We go Monday for our eight week checkup with Addison and I want to live in our happy little pink bubble until then."
"Arizona."
"No, Teddy. I don't think I can handle the pain in Callie's eyes if something's wrong with this baby, Much less the pain I will feel." She said, brushing a tear away.
"No, Zo." Teddy stood up to hug her friend. "Don't say that, sweetie. Odds are everything's fine. Maybe it's just first time pregnancy jitters." She laughed, trying to ease the blonde.
"Maybe, but after I came to work I started bleeding heavier."
"Arizona.." Teddy pulled back to study her friend. "Please, go get checked out."
"Callie said the next little hint of pain, she was dragging me to the doctors office and to be honest, I'll let her."
"No. Not at the next hint of pain. Please go Zo, today!"
"Maybe I'll talk to her after we call Maria." She said, just as her phone vibrated in her pocket. "Oh, I bet that's her." She said taking her phone out. "She's suppose to text me after she's out of surgery."
- Hi sweetie, I just finished. I'm in my office. I was hoping you'd be in here waiting on me. - XO Callie -
- On my way, babe. - XO Ari -
"I guess I should go meet her."
"Please talk to her, I'm sure she feels like me, you should get checked out. Just to ease our mind."
"Yeah, maybe." Arizona said, standing from the desk. "Thanks for the talk Teds." She was starting to think she should talk to Callie and get checked before they talk to Maria, just to make sure everything was okay before they told her.
"Welcome, sweetie." She said as the blonde started walking to the stairs. "What about those papers I need signed?" Teddy reminded her.
"Right." Arizona made a detoured to her office to hurry and sign off on the files before she made her way up to the brunettes office. _
Callie opened her lap top as she waited on her wife to meet her in her office to Skype her grandmother. Just as she clicked on the browser, a call came through her screen. Accepting the call, Maria's face came across the front. "Calliope." She said when her granddaughters face was on her end of the line. "It's so good to see you."
"Hi Nana. How are you?" Callie asked.
"Well, I've had better days." She shrugged.
"What's wrong Nana?"
"Well.. lets see, I'm over eighty, my bones crack and pop every time I get up."
"I'm sorry Nan." Callie said to her grandma.
"Don't be sorry, I'm old dear."
"No you're not. You're a thirty year old woman trapped in an old body." Callie laughed.
"That's very true." Maria laughed. "So what do I owe the pleasure of this scheduled call? and where's that wife of yours? I thought you both needed to speak to me?"
"We do. She's on her way up. We're on our lunch break right now." Callie said, just as Arizona came into the room. "Oh.. speaking of the devil." Callie smiled at her wife as she came to sit beside of her.
"Arizona, my darling. It's good to see you." Maria greeted her.
"Hi Maria. How are you?" The blonde asked. So much for talking to her wife before they talked to the older Latina.
"I'm pretty good. I'm going to meet up with my cloud society group after this."
"Nana..." Callie scolded. "You just made out to me you weren't doing too good and now you're actually going out with your friends?"
"I was only looking for some attention from you, Calliope. What's a woman have to do to get her granddaughter to call her more often." Maria said, looking at the two women leaning into each other's arms.
"I call you at least twice a week." Callie told her.
"Yeah, but I hear from Arizona more."
"What?" Callie asked, looking over at her wife.
"What?" Arizona shrugged. "Sometimes I get bored when you're in a late surgery." She said. "And talking to Nana is almost like talking to you.. minus the kisses." She winked and gave her wife a kiss on the cheek.
"You two are just too cute for words." Maria laughed as they kissed.
"We're not cute Nana. We're hot." Callie told her.
"Maria, what is this cloud society?" Arizona asked curiously.
"Oh, it's were me and some of the girls go to the park, knock back a couple of Sherry's while we discuss what the clouds look like. Last week Sophia saw Pat Sajak riding side saddle on a dolphin."
"Oh my god, Nana!" Callie laughed. She was so happy her grandma was getting along so well after her fall.
"Leave her alone Calliope. She needs to have fun too." Arizona told the brunette.
"Be a good girl and listen to your wife, Calliope." Maria laughed.
"Why do you two always pick on me when you're together." The younger Latina grumbled.
"Because you're so easy Calliope." Arizona laughed.
"Yeah, Calliope." Maria teased.
"Okay okay." Callie said rolling her eyes.
"Okay ladies, if you'd be so kindly enough to tell me what this special Skype session is all about so I can get my drink on."
"Nana. I swear. I will come out there and drag you back here and make you live with us to see if that will calm your wild side down." Callie laughed.
"Don't tempt me, Calliope. I do miss home."
"Don't say that Nana, because if I knew for sure you'd stay with us, I'd have your bags packed and the plane ready before you said yes." She said, looking over at her wife receiving a wink from the blonde.
"Times ticking." Maria pointed at her watch.
"Go ahead baby." Arizona whispered, leaning against the brunette.
"You remember when we were there last time?" Callie asked her.
"Yes, you were being a stubborn little shit."
Laughing. "She was." Arizona agreed with Maria.
"Hey." Callie said, bumping her wife's shoulder. "Come here." She pulled her wife from the seat beside her so the blonde was sitting on her lap. "We told you something then, and promised you'd be the first person we'd tell." She said, seeing her grandmother was trying to remember what it was they talked about almost five months ago. Circling her arm around the small of her wife's back, she then placed her other hand on the blondes stomach.
"You're?" Maria gasped. "She's?"
"Yes, we're going to have a baby." Callie smiled up to her wife before kissing pink lips.
"How.. when? I mean how far along are you?"
"I'm seven weeks." Arizona said, placing her hand on top of her wife's. Arizona wasn't showing yet, but Callie swore she could tell her wife's body was already changing.
"Congratulations." She squealed. "How are you doing? Any morning sickness?"
"I'm doing pretty good. I've had some morning sickness, it hasn't been too bad though. I've not had it in about a week or so."
"Calliope's been taking care of you I hope."
"She has Maria." The bonded said kissing her wife on her temple. "She's been great."
"Don't let her lie to you, Nan. She's been spotting and cramping lately and refuses to go get checked out." Callie said, getting a glare from her wife.
"Calliope." Arizona sighed. She didn't want to have this discussion with Maria on the other line.
"Well.. we could see her today."
"Arizona, you know it's better to be safe than sorry." Maria told her.
"I know.." She whispered. "How about you call her and see if we can come in after work?"
"Really?"
"Yeah, we'll talk bout it later okay." The blonde whispered to the brunette.
"Okay." Callie told her as Maria spoke up again.
"What are you afraid of Arizona?" She asked. She forgot Maria was pretty good at reading her just as well as her wife.
"I don't know.." She lowered her head.
"Talk to me, honey." Callie lowered her head to see her wife's face. "You can tell me anything."
"I just feel like there's something wrong, Calliope." She said, looking up to her wife.
"I.. think I'll let you girls go so you can talk. Give me a call later though so I won't worry myself to death."
"We will Nana. For now this is our little secret, okay?" She told her grandma.
"Of course, sweetheart. I love you both."
"We love you too, bye." Callie said, ending the call.
"Talk to me, babe." Callie said, hugging her wife. "What's going on?"
"I just.." Arizona said, tears slowly falling down her face. "I'm hurting, Calliope and I'm scared something's wrong with the baby."
"Okay.." Callie breathed. "Where are you hurting?"
"I'm cramping and my back is killing me. I've tried to hide it because I don't want you to worry, but after we got to work I started bleeding heavier."
"Arizona why didn't you tell me earlier."
"I'm just scared and I felt that if I didn't say anything everything was okay."
"Arizona. I need you to be truthful with me, honey. How long have you been hurting?"
"Since Monday."
"Arizona it's Friday." Callie said in shock. "Why didn't you tell me it was this bad."
"I don't know. I thought a lot of it was just in my head." She whispered.
"Okay, well I'm going to call Addison and ask her if we can come in right now."
"Okay." Arizona gave in, truth was she had a feeling what was going on but she was too scared to voice it. They both had been reading up on pregnancy and she remembered an article in passing about two weeks ago and she was showing a few of the symptoms but she was in denial even now. "Callie?" She said as her wife pulled out her phone.
"Yeah?"
"I'm scared." She cried, collapsing into her wife's arms.
"Arizona.." Callie held her wife. "Oh honey.. why didn't you tell me sweetie. I could have done.. I don't know.. something?" She said, holding her wife tight.
"I'm sorry." She cried. "I've been trying to keep it in and I just can't anymore."
"Babe." Callie tried to sooth her wife. "You don't have to keep anything from me. Our main priority is you and your health. What do you think is wrong?"
"I've not had morning sickness in almost a week. What if.. what if the baby..."
"Shh.. don't say it sweetie. We don't know anything yet okay?"
"Okay, but what if, Callie?"
"No, no what ifs. You remember when we were going through my attack and the trial and I was questioning everything coming and going, even us? I was so scared that we wouldn't last because of it. I found myself always saying what if this.. what if that, but you told me we couldn't live our lives on the what ifs. You were strong for me, when I should have been strong for you."
"You were, I wouldn't have gotten through that without you."
"And we'll get through this together. No what ifs. We'll get through whatever happens. Good or bad. Okay?"
Nodding. "Okay."
"Here's what we're going to do." Callie said, worriedly. She was silently berating herself for not being more strict with her wife about seeing the doctor. "I'm going to call Addison and see if she can get us in today and if not, we'll just go to the emergency room and get Bailey to check you out then go from there."
"Okay."
"Are you hurting right now?"
"It's not so bad right now."
"Okay, I'm going to call Addison and we'll go from there." Callie said, dialing her friends number.
Callie was elbow deep in a little girls appendix when Teddy walked into her OR with a mask covering her face. Callie had called Addison at lunch and the red head scheduled them in for later this afternoon. With Arizona's insistence, Callie went ahead with this surgery as planned even though she just wanted to go home with her wife for the rest of the day until their appointment. The blonde insisted on working until it was time to go see Addison, but Callie had put her foot down and made her wife relax in her office and do paper work instead of seeing patients. After talking to Teddy and telling her to keep an eye on her wife, Callie went off to her last surgery of the day. Which is where she found herself as Teddy stepped through her OR doors.
"Ahh, Teddy. Do you know I've performed so many of these surgeries I could literally do them in my sleep."
"I'm sure you can Dr. Torres." Teddy fake smiled through her mask. "Are you about finished here?" She was about to turn the doctors world upside down.
"Yep." She said, suturing the last stitch. "How's Dr. Robbins feeling? Okay I assume?"
"She's uh.." Teddy mumbled not knowing what to say, her hands becoming shakier and shakier.
"Oh, that looks terrible." The brunette said, looking down at the stitches she just tied off. "Maybe I should try that again." She said, picking up the scissors to redo her work.
"It looks fine Dr. Torres." She came closer to the table to look at Callie in the eyes. "Step away."
"Teddy?" Callie looked over at her friend.
"Callie, step away from the patient."
Callie's body went numb from her head to her toes, seeing the fear in green eyes. "Say it." She backed away from the table and turned to the nurse, silently praying everything was okay.
"Callie." She swallowed the lump that was in her throat. "It's Arizona." She said as the room around her went silent just as the Latinas eyes filled with tears and the scissors dropped to the floor with a loud clang.
I've had this planed from the get go... Please don't kill me.. Just stick with me.. It will all work out splendidly. Just going to be a few very rocky chapters.
